Confirmed: Fairy-tale princess wants to be Senator Fairy-tale princess

We really should consider setting aside a permanent seat for the Kennedys, and I say that as someone who wants to see less of them in public life, not more. Give them their own spot, fully inheritable, to be filled by whomever the family designates, and you might just placate them enough to discourage other members of the brood from running. As it is, we’re looking at Caroline in New York, Teddy’s wife replacing him in Massachusetts, and just maybe Chris Kennedy as a dark horse in Illinois. This dynastic nonsense is already an American disgrace; let’s go the whole nine yards, grant them nobility, and limit them to one spot out of 100.
Caroline Kennedy, the daughter of an American political dynasty, has decided to pursue the United States Senate seat being vacated by Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York, a person told of her decision said on Monday.
The decision came after a series of deeply personal and political conversations, in which Ms. Kennedy, whom friends describe as unflashy but determined, wrestled with whether to give up what has been a lifetime of avoiding the spotlight…
Ms. Kennedy’s decision is likely to have a major impact on the governor’s considerations as he mulls who should succeed Mrs. Clinton. Already, some other Democrats have pointedly questioned her credentials for the job. United States Representative Gary Ackerman, a Queens Democrat, said last week that he did not know what Ms. Kennedy’s qualifications were, “except that she has name recognition — but so does J. Lo.”
She and Sharpton are already scratching each other’s backs. Paterson’s going to irritate a lot of New York congressmen if he snubs them for Princess, but I’m guessing he’s willing to risk it given how thrilled The One will be by the appointment. Caroline’s a loyal Obamite and inexperienced enough that Team Barry probably figures she’ll vote any way they want her to; if they’re intent on buying a Senate seat, forget Illinois and push for Caroline in exchange for a promise that Obama will campaign personally for Paterson when he runs for re-election. Everyone wins! Especially the Kennedy gene pool.
Exit question: Is there any way Paterson tells her no now that she’s made her interest public? Kennedy cultists won’t like that, Uncle Ted first and foremost among them.

How many of the 435 in the House will be apportioned for them?
She’s already approached Paterson’s boss about the job, so I’d say the fix is in.

That’s it, I am changing my name to Kennedy, always wanted a job like that…

Indeed. No more Kennedys, Bushs or Clintons.
The country, the American people don’t win, and that gene pool doesn’t either, though it doesn’t have much to lose.
After the farce of Nov. 04, nothing should surprise anyone, any more. We deserve to go the way of Rome.

I really hope she doesn’t get the seat. She brings nothing but star power.
crr6 on December 15, 2008 at 6:37 PM
She bears all the qualities necessary to be a Senator from New York. She’s mindlessly liberal and a Kennedy. Nothing else is necessary really except a strong tendency to “spread the wealth” which I’m sure she’ll adapt to handily.
Signed Sincerely,
Born in New York, damn glad I don’t live there.
Tim Zank on December 15, 2008 at 6:37 PM
So the princess wants to play senator. Lovely. Why dont they have a special election there?
becki51758 on December 15, 2008 at 6:37 PM
I dunno, I heard this morning that one of the NY Democrat Big Wigs said something like ‘J-Lo has more experience in Government than Caroline does’. I’m sure who ever it was is probably sleeping with the fishes by now….
On a brighter note, a nagging question has been answered..’What could be worse than having Hillary Clinton as one of your Senators’.
Apart from Al Franken I mean.
BigWyo on December 15, 2008 at 6:37 PM
Remember what the Democrats told us, Sarah Palin is unqualified and has no business being politics. But Caroline Kennedy is because of her last name.
Bill Brasky on December 15, 2008 at 6:37 PM
Does having a lower body count than Uncle Ted amount to a qualification for a seat in the Senate?
Cicero43 on December 15, 2008 at 6:38 PM
that is just sooooo wrong. I am so sick of politicians period but electing someone because of her daddy and her last name is just wrong in so many ways.
katablog.com on December 15, 2008 at 6:39 PM
Enough with this “Camelot” crap. Really, how idiotic to appoint someone solely on last name.
jencab on December 15, 2008 at 6:39 PM

terryannonline on December 15, 2008 at 6:41 PM
This is great news for Republicans. She will be a good candidate to defeat in 2010 because the electoric does not treat these types of appointments well.
RedSoxNation on December 15, 2008 at 6:42 PM
If she get’s it, it will be officially the “ugly-woman” seat.
I can say that, I shook hands with and voted against Hillary in 2000.
anti-boomer on December 15, 2008 at 6:42 PM
Before this goes any further it’s critical that the media determine whether or not she really gave birth to all of her ‘children’, what exactly is going on in any church she attends, how much she spends on clothes and interview her on all sorts of issues (I even have a couple of sample questions like how many supreme court cases she can name) immediately.
gwelf on December 15, 2008 at 6:43 PM
It’s good to know there are Senate aspirants out there that are even less qualified than the president select.
At least the country didn’t select the absolute bottom of the barrel.

If Hillary was qualified to be president based mostly on her relationship to Bill, then Chelsea is more than qualified to be the new junior Senator from New York, no?
c3ichief on December 15, 2008 at 6:47 PM
Are they setting her up to be the first woman president in 2017? After all, she is a Kennedy. Apparently that’s enough, considering mandatory presidential experience is writing books and working in your community. A couple of years as a junior senator and you’re hired!
sherry on December 15, 2008 at 6:48 PM
Are the same people who bashes Gov. Palin over her experience endorsing Kennedy?
Oh any one find out how much Gov. Paterson is charging? :-)

so not that I would want her as my senator, what are the qualification to be a legislator? should she have gone to a certain school with a certain degree? had a certain private sector job? all she needs is an opinion right?
Kaptain Amerika on December 15, 2008 at 7:04 PM
Senator Socialite. What a joke is right. As long as nobody has high expectations from her, like helping solve a financial crisis or cobbling together a national health care plan, or drafting legislation, what could go wrong? Senator’s aren’t required to do much more than hold the post anymore, it seems she’ll fit right it.
scalleywag on December 15, 2008 at 7:05 PM
Frankly, I like inexperienced Democrats in offices that “must” be filled by Democrats. The more likely they are to fail to achieve anything, the better off we all are.

Has Senator now just become a ceremonial position? I mean, what possible rationale can he offer for appointing her, beside her name?
AmericanUnderground on December 15, 2008 at 7:10 PM
God help us when we find ourselves placing people in government positions because they “expressed an interest” and their family includes a dead president. No other qualifications are necessary. No wonder our government is in a shambles. Doesn’t Hillary have a brother we could appoint? Or Bill’s second cousin? I say hold an election, same as Illinois is going to do.
scalleywag on December 15, 2008 at 7:12 PM
I’d guarantee my next year’s salary that because she “expressed an interest” this post is going to be handed to her on a silver platter. I’d say New York deserves exactly what they’re going to get (Tea parties and society pages) except that the rest of the nation has a stake in this too and I for one was looking for a candidate with a little more substance and uh…experience? More pay for play sounds like.
scalleywag on December 15, 2008 at 7:16 PM
Too bad Billy Carter isn’t still around. He’d make a great senator.

Seven Percent Solution on December 15, 2008 at 7:17 PM
So basically this is how it is: the evening Snooze on NBC just touted Caroline’s great fundraising prowesss, her commitment to causes, and her motherhood as big pluses. In addition, of course, she’s a Kennedy, has money, and an Ivy League education. Yet Sarah Palin who attained a nomination for the VP on her own merits, from a working class family, who struggled to put herself through state college is an idiot retard who deserves nothing but scorn and hatred. Basically, we’ve become this ultra snobby nation where no one outside of the Ivy League or Blueblood need apply for anything. Have I got this all figured out right?
convert on December 15, 2008 at 7:20 PM
I think you’ve got it.
meltenn on December 15, 2008 at 7:24 PM
convert on — YES you’ve got it!
But if your old man was president and nearly got the world blown up because Nikita Kruschev thought he was an immature, ivy league half wit, (and dad admitted he was a swooning fool in a first meeting with a murdering dictator with a-bombs) but the media and academics have buried all that, how can you lose?
I wish I could find a place to move to, at least temporarily.
IlikedAUH2O on December 15, 2008 at 7:26 PM
And I’m certain that the press corps will be every bit as thorough in their “investigation” of Caroline Kennedy as they were with Sarah Palin.

I say we rip her heart out, throw her down the capitol steps and pray that our famine end. That seems a much wiser use of a political virgin.
anti-boomer on December 15, 2008 at 7:39 PM
Caroline doesn’t need experience. Hillary already showed that you can be junior senator from New York without having any previous experience. Once that bar was lowered, it became anybody’s game.
Dee2008 on December 15, 2008 at 7:43 PM
Since Kennedy is famous for avoiding campaigning, she’ll take the seat for two years and won’t run in 2010 when the special election is held. By then Chelsea Clinton will be 30 and will run.
O-Dub on December 15, 2008 at 7:43 PM
Did the Kennedy’s really run a billion through Fiji to skip taxes or just use trusts?

I’m so done with these imbred, freak of nature Kennedy’s being rewarded with important political positions solely on the basis of having the correct square jawed DNA. I don’t feel sorry for the Kennedy’s, I think they’ve brought most of their misfortune upon themselves, and the rest is no more than the rest of us endure in a lifetime. Enough with the universal applause for nothing more than having been born into the most corrupt and morally bankrupt family in America.
anniekc on December 15, 2008 at 7:59 PM
This is NY we’re talking about, Hillaryland. If Kennedy is named, she’ll have a safe seat for life.
ddrintn on December 15, 2008 at 8:00 PM
When Mel Carnahan was elected posthumously, his widow Jean was named to fill his seat. I’d have less of a problem with Bill Clinton being named to replace Hillary. Billy Jeff certainly is much more qualified to be a US Senator, having been a state AG, two term governor, and two term president. I don’t like his politics, but he wouldn’t be any more liberal than Caroline Kennedy and he’s way more qualified.
She’s never even run for school board or city council. But then, the Dems are the party of hereditary privilege: Kennedy, Dodd, Dingell, Ford, Levin.
rokemronnie on December 15, 2008 at 8:01 PM
Wretched idea. No experience as an elected official, no experience at anything except being a socialite and trust fund baby. Give it to someone like David Dinkins or Mike Bloomberg and if not them then find some suitable Congressman. Not Kennedy. She doesn’t need anything else handed to her on a silver platter, while men like Dinkins, love him or hate him worked all their lives for their city and state!
clnurnberg on December 15, 2008 at 8:02 PM
But first, Caroline has to drive someone off a bridge.
drjohn on December 15, 2008 at 8:03 PM
But can Lady Caroline feel a pea under forty mattresses? I know that her uncle Sir Ted can sniff out a bottle of gin at forty paces.

I’m curious, how does one “decide to pursue the United States Senate seat being vacated by Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York …” if that Senate Seat is available only by POLITICAL APPOINTMENT? What a joke.
I would love to see a list of Federal-level politicians who are the sons and daughters of politicians. Who says there isn’t a ruling class in the US?
Now that’s change we can believe in!
furytrader on December 15, 2008 at 8:08 PM
The Senate is nothing more than a country club. We have serious issues facing our country and as far as I can tell she is not qualified enough to operate a doll shop on Long Island let alone represent the state of New York as a Senator.
But then again the majority of voters across the country voted in a community organizer for pres.
God help us.
