Video: Suspicious fire at Palin’s church, $1M damage

posted at 7:53 am on December 14, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Share on Facebook | regular view

A fire broke out at the Wasilla Bible Church yesterday while a group of women worked on crafts inside, all of whom escaped without injury. The church itself sustained an estimated one million dollars worth of damage, and investigators say that the fire looks like arson:

Gov. Sarah Palin’s home church has been badly damaged in a suspicious fire.

Larry Kroon, the pastor of the Wasilla Bible Church, estimates damages at more than $1 million to the church. …

Palin spokesman Bill McAllister said the governor stopped by the church Saturday morning and apologized if the incident was related to her.

In a written statement McAllister said Palin, “told an assistant pastor that she apologizes if the incident is in any way connected to the undeserved negative attention the church has received since she became a vice presidential candidate on Aug. 29. Whatever the motives of the arsonist, the governor has faith in the scriptural passage that what was intended for evil will in some way be used for good.”

It’s too early to know whether the fire has anything to do with Sarah Palin’s candidacy. Unfortunately, churches and other places of worship get attacked by nutcases for a wide variety of irrational reasons, and one cannot predict what made these nuts set fire to this Wasilla church. In one sense, it seems odd that the attack would come now, after the election, when passions have cooled somewhat and the Governor has returned to work.

Thankfully, the alarm and sprinkler systems did their job — an area of some expertise for me.  They’re designed to save lives, and the women in the crafts group were at serious risk of injury or death without them.  Too many older buildings skip or skimp on such systems, occasionally with tragic results.  This church was built three years ago, and we can see how these building requirements work to save lives.

Hopefully, the police in Wasilla will catch the perpetrator(s) and we will know what their motivation was very quickly.  Until then, regardless of your denomination, let’s keep the congregation of the Wasilla Bible Church in our prayers.  If they have any fundraisers, we’ll revisit the story to get Hot Air readers involved.

I started to get this strange feeling that conservatives will have to seccede from the rest of the nation and start a new country, fresh and clear, apart from America, with no interference from the people who hate them… and no intentions of allowing them there.

Something like this cannot last.

Proving your own ignorance and hatred. Bible Churches are painfully Protestant–which means no candles, or at least none burning while church isn’t happening. And you can forget about incense. The only thing stinking and burning is your hatred and ignorance, like setting a fart on fire.

You’re really big on snakes, huh? Is that meant to be a Genesis parallel? My question is, do I get to be the “pre-apple” snake where I apparently had legs OR “post-apple” where I get to bite all the ankles? Both sound cool but I think I’d prefer the former…I’m a pretty active and outdoors-y snake.

dk on December 14, 2008 at 12:38 PM

People, if you get a chance, fight evil wherever you find it! This is not the time to be complacent.

Persecution of Christians in this land is coming, and it’s going to be rather nasty. It will only be a matter of time before congregants at a church are killed inside their building only because they’re “Christers”, “Bible-thumpers”, and the like.

No wonder the number of house-based churches are increasing!

newton on December 14, 2008 at 12:38 PM

If unions are so wonderful, why does Detroit need a bailout?

Detroit has made cars that people do want. They make the cars that the transplants wont- affordable performance.

The only choices left would leave us like Europe. A root canal would be more painless than trying to get transplants to do the following:
* A 6-cylinder Honda Civic and a Toyota Solara with 8.
* Getting them to put more than I-4 under $20000, and an I-4 with a turbo under $40000.
* Toyota to do the same thing to cars that they did to trucks.
* Stop pointing us to their luxury brands when we ask for a V6, I6, or at the end of saying “performance”.
* Lifestyle environmentalists out of the car design studio.

And I see more hate directed at Palin and conservatives than directed from them.

Yet I see little substance other than “who annoys everyone else the most?”.

Besides, isn’t Mr. Palin a card-carrying Steelworker? Be careful how you aim that one.

You want irony? I’M PAGAN! Yes, a Goddess-worhipping, trusting on Her providence, polytheistic Pagan—and I believe that even those who do not worship as I do deserve respect. Religious freedom works both ways. BOTH WAYS!

So many, I will admit, come to Paganism in some state of rebellion from the Church. I can’t honestly say I was all that different. But I know I love and trust my gods, and that maybe Deity is less exercised about what you call Deity, so long as you call on Deity.

Burning a church is WRONG. Attacking a place of worship is WRONG—the only way it could be countenanced are situations where combatants hide in places of worship, in hopes of being allowed to attack at will. In which case, the defilers of the sacred were the ones hoping to hide behind the aegis of the house of worship, not the ones who blasted them out.

Who was holding a weapon in Palin’s church? Was someone perhaps threatened by the knitting needles of the crafting ladies? If so, is fire some kind of appropriate response to the imminent threat of crafting glue?

Sekhmet on December 14, 2008 at 12:51 PM

But the elephant in the room is that the American carmakers are not only having to be paying almost twice as much per hour, but are also per their union contracts paying retirees from their current profits on the balance sheet, rather than investment-based retirement plans.

Gee, if that had been a black church, the ATFE would have found some white guy, shot his wife, son, and dog, burned down his church, and claimed to the worled he was guilty before conducting any investigation. I guess that is the difference between arson at a white church and at a black church.

I already made my ATFE jokes yesterday, but my jokes were centered on the bureaus never-ending addition of initials to make themselves relevant. (They added “Explosives”. I think next up will be “Copyright Infringement” followed by “Cable Theft”.)

I really don’t see how this is a white or black thing. It’s more likely a liberal vs. conservative thing. If it were a conservative black church no one would care. Think of Rev. Mannings black church in Harlem. He’s been railing against Obama for over a year, and no one gives him the time of day. If someone set fire to his little church, how much coverage do you think it would get?

I doubt this was for any insurance-related business or to cover any malfeasance. An entrance was targeted, and people were in the church. If someone wanted to cover their tracks, they would choose a time when the church was unoccupied and would make fer-darn-sure the business office got the brunt of it.

This looks like malice on the part of the arsonist was the motive. Seems the lefties on here are quite proud of the acts of this sick individual. If someone had burned Trinity United, I am sure pretty much everybody on this board would be denouncing this. Can’t the liberals on this board manage a simple, “burning churches is bad, sorry this happened?”

Yup!

Personally, it really surprises me how often people take that one Bible passage about a rich man entering into the kingdom of God out of context. Its become just as misused and abused as “Judge not lest ye be judged.”

Well, that’s what I think anyway. It kind of struck me as I was reflecting on Matthew 25:14-30. The left is too quick to verbally smack people like Franklin Graham for being rich. Why should it matter, as long as we glorify God with it?

#2. I wrote America’s Gov’r the following:

Dear Governor;
True condolences on the hate crime you’re going through right now, re: church arson. Know a few special Jews in my life and even though you’re not Jewish, just the same kind of hate crime they have to occassionally deal with.
BTW, I think you rock the world and would have been a great VP. Shame somebody thinks your rock n roll (aka conservative activism and compassion for disabled people like I) is worthy of a hate crime against not just yourself but innocent civilians. Most of the urban blacks I have known (military and executives excepted) are very conservative on Sunday but the complete opposite the rest of the week. Much like a song on the radio or movie on the screen whereby once it has played through it’s over until the next time it comes on.

viking01 on December 14, 2008 at 3:01 PM

Well that didn’t take long,..a bombing at a bank and now a Church burning. Sounds like someone is trying to be like Ayers and husseins cousin Odinga.

I find it hard to believe that you know ANY blacks if you don’t recognize that on a lot of social issues, blacks are, well, conservative.

ddrintn on December 14, 2008 at 2:54 PM

which is why the anti-abortion, pro-Prop. 8 GOP presidential candidate won 5% of them? But you are right many are social conservative but they also would never in a million years vote republican, and the fiscal issues are mostly why.

Which vastly alters your original statement. Nice going.

ddrintn on December 14, 2008 at 3:10 PM

what a crock! i find it hard to believe you know one gay person let alone a FEW HUNDRED who are against gay marriage out of THOUSANDS who voted against Prop. 8. Now you are right about one thing, there are many gay conservatives. Many gays have a lot of disposable income they do not want taxed heavily. Which is why it’s a shame that, similar to the attitude towards blacks and hispanics, the GOP’s social conservatism is hostile to them and they feel unwanted in the party.

Noneya on December 14, 2008 at 2:29 PM

I was in the shower. Had to see what was up on here. Hate to be mean. But she is a very hateful person. Thanks Cindy. Being a mother of a Gay young man. I had joined PFlag years ago to be with people who are in the same situation. I do know hundreds of Gays. They are people too. Regardless of what others believe. I have respected many posters on here. Is the way one comes across. That is all.

Don’t know why I am responding to a monkey, which you are. Many Gays feel that Prop 8 was a hate machine for more violence and repercussions against them. You are to stupid to know this. You live in a cave with a one track mind. Heaven help your sorry ass.

Cut the “dk” loser a little slack.

Were he not venting his deep-seated insecurities here he probably would be exacerbating his Carpal Tunnel Syndrome at the adult theater.

viking01 on December 14, 2008 at 2:35 PM

Well, you have to remember that this dk guy has probably never put in an honest day’s work in his life, has probably lived an easy life–never had to struggle to make ends meet, never had to support a family, mainly because someone is probably working their butt off to support him as he blows his parents’ hard-earned money drinking himself senseless at college keggers. Added to that, he was probably spoiled rotten as a child. Values such as compassion, faith, respect, integrity, honor, and duty are words that he just sniggers at.

You can’t talk to people like him–you can’t reach them. All you can do is hope that one day they either grow up or go away.

That makes no sense. There was little to no violence against gays in the 6 months it was legal before the vote. You are just making things up now, and from your abusive manner, I’m wondering if it was you your son was afraid of.

Noneya on December 14, 2008 at 3:28 PM

So, betting pool:

Is it the Prop 8 mobsters, or the Obama thug cultists? I know there’s some overlap, of course, but they are the most likely perpetrators.

You do live in a cave. Do you think the Media has reported on violence against Gays? Here in Ca. there has been many violent acts towards Gays by other Gays. My son is a very intelligent man. He feels civil marriages are fine. What a nit wit you are. And very ignorant. The stench is getting strong with your breath.

One never knows who set the fire. I am not arguing that it could have been done by a Gay person. Or another hateful Obamabot. We don’t know. I get tired of All Gays being targeted. Good point though you made.

Oh, you misunderstand. A Prop 8 mobster has two key features:

They are generally white.
They are always liberal.

One need not be homosexual to be a Prop 8 mobster. In fact, my bet is the most extreme elements of the Prop 8 cabal are white straight liberals under the age of 30.

Why is it every time someone goes with their personal preferences and votes outside their little ready-made pigeon hole (i.e. Black conservatives, pro-8 homosexuals) its always people like you who seek to marginalize them, write their behavior off and/or call them self hating? That really disturbs me. You’re like the guys that threw Oreos at Michael Steele.

Calm down. A militant attitude serves no purpose other than to piss people off.

violence towards gays by other gays before the vote passed? doubtful. maybe it was your self-loathing son pushing discrimination against his own kind that caused that. and just because the media doesn’t report it, that doesn’t mean it does happen either, if it does i’m thinking it’s mostly in that violent mind of yours.

Look moron, you want to get in a pissing contest. Ok.

Lev. 25:35-37
If one of your countrymen becomes poor and is unable to support himself among you, help him as you would an alien or a temporary resident so he can continue to live among you.

So let me get this straight. Your version of Christianity allows you to spend money on objects, but not people?
Ever hear of multiple services? Smaller building, more money to aid the poor.
But hey, you got excuses.

rockdalian on December 13, 2008 at 8:40 PM

Interesting. Ever notice the same people who love to quote, “Judge not, that ye be not judged,” on any question of morality see nothing wrong with judging a church for spending too much on a building.

I don’t know that this applies to rockdalian specifically, but I’ve seen it enough from other people to notice it.

If you’re interested in praying for our country, you can go here:

Allah, Ed, Michelle,
Congratulations on your accomplishment. Who could have guessed a blog as promising as HotAir once was could sink so quickly? I suppose if I cared more I’d quote some of the hateful garbage that passes for legitimate discussion here, but I rarely visit here much anymore. When I do it is to see if anyone has reined in the crap and to check for the re-appearance of many original & substantive commentors who used to frequent this site. Kudos to all the newbies who helped with its demise. Raise your glasses of Kool-aid to toast one another for a job well done. Mazel tov!

My gay conservative friends are against gay marriage because they think it’s needlessly confrontational towards religious groups who oppose it. They think civil unions is the best way to go. I think so too.
