Video: Suspicious fire at Palin’s church, $1M damage

A fire broke out at the Wasilla Bible Church yesterday while a group of women worked on crafts inside, all of whom escaped without injury. The church itself sustained an estimated one million dollars worth of damage, and investigators say that the fire looks like arson:
Gov. Sarah Palin’s home church has been badly damaged in a suspicious fire.
Larry Kroon, the pastor of the Wasilla Bible Church, estimates damages at more than $1 million to the church. …
Palin spokesman Bill McAllister said the governor stopped by the church Saturday morning and apologized if the incident was related to her.
In a written statement McAllister said Palin, “told an assistant pastor that she apologizes if the incident is in any way connected to the undeserved negative attention the church has received since she became a vice presidential candidate on Aug. 29. Whatever the motives of the arsonist, the governor has faith in the scriptural passage that what was intended for evil will in some way be used for good.”
It’s too early to know whether the fire has anything to do with Sarah Palin’s candidacy. Unfortunately, churches and other places of worship get attacked by nutcases for a wide variety of irrational reasons, and one cannot predict what made these nuts set fire to this Wasilla church. In one sense, it seems odd that the attack would come now, after the election, when passions have cooled somewhat and the Governor has returned to work.
Thankfully, the alarm and sprinkler systems did their job — an area of some expertise for me. They’re designed to save lives, and the women in the crafts group were at serious risk of injury or death without them. Too many older buildings skip or skimp on such systems, occasionally with tragic results. This church was built three years ago, and we can see how these building requirements work to save lives.
Hopefully, the police in Wasilla will catch the perpetrator(s) and we will know what their motivation was very quickly. Until then, regardless of your denomination, let’s keep the congregation of the Wasilla Bible Church in our prayers. If they have any fundraisers, we’ll revisit the story to get Hot Air readers involved.

OK folks, let me post that in the correct thread.

I really enjoy a good, vigorous tete-a-tete. But you are simply a liar, unable to substantiate any portion of that absurd allegation. I would pay good money to see you try in earnest to back up what you’ve stated.
Your statement does, however, give me some insight into how easily and effictively one can twist perception to conform to their limited scope of reality.
Reboot dude, you’re running on unsafe mode.

The Palin family should have the wedding at that church. God protected the folks inside during the attack. Even though
there was damage to the church, the true church which are the
peoplewere protected.
I trust God will watch over the Palin family..and Palin.

Can you set fire to a church associated with a vice-presidential candidate in a small town and get away with it? My guess is no. Footprints int he snow, forensic evidence connecting the perpetrator(s) to the method of ignition, small town gossip, the relatively short list of possible suspects without an alibi, etc. I think all these things along with the spotlight effect caused by Palin’s connection to the church will work to bring those responsible to justice pretty quickly.
D0WNT0WN on December 14, 2008 at 8:12 AM
Glad they are all ok, and the pastor’s exactly right – it’s just a building. Churches are important to parishioners, sometimes too important, but they are just buildings.
As for the “who”s and the “why”s, I urge caution.
I remember the hysteria whipped up by the leftists during Clinton’s presidency, claiming that white racists had engaged in a campaign of “burning black churches”. It was a hoax by delusional nitwits made up out of whole cloth, and nearly every legitimate fire ended up being attributed to either accidents or faulty wiring, or insurance fraud by the pastors or members of the churches, which was the largest single cause.
I don’t want to point a finger at anyone on this.

I too am sympathetic to the excesses displayed among “Christians”. I think your analogy comparing the Wassila church to Mother Theresa is off base. She was called to a different mission than the members of this church. Working families cannot live among the poor when they are trying to create a stable environment for their children. The Mother Theresa’s of the world go into poor areas so the people can find hope and eventually build their communities into the type we find in Wassila. They would naturally build the facilities they need to strengthen their community…such as classrooms, offices, and other amenities that help them make the best use of the funds the church collects. Staffing of the offices is a requirement for an efficiently run organization so that the monies collected are not eaten up in wasteful habits.
My main complaint is levied toward the pastors who wear Rolex’s and drive luxury cars. Those guys have totally lost the purpose of their calling.

Good points. The libs are forever jumping the guy as to the whys and wherefores of things. Let’s wait for the experts to do their job and then blame those responsible.

McCallister is Mrs. Palin’s spokesperson.
We witness Faith, one of Mrs. Palin’s many virtues in addition to her courage, honesty, loyalty, self-discipline, compassion and perseverance.
I’m sure the Wasilla Bible Church will have many expenses beyond what insurance will cover this Christmas season. Let’s help.

If you cannot concede the point that minorities do get preferential treatment without demanding he name chapter and verse cases, then you just aren’t paying attention.
The point is, and I think you already made it, is that no group is immune from bigoted treatment. Fat people, handicapped people, and “ginger” people, are all judged by issues other than skin color. Yet, we have a political juggernaut fueled by the perpetration of white guilt. Where is the skinny guilt? Physically perfect and mentally cognizant guilt? How about the non-redhead guilt? Those political machines don’t exist and yet I’d bet they out number the minorities who are discriminated against to the extent that it is simply poo-pooed when it is seen.
Minorities who still cling to the belief that institutional racism is alive and well are doing a dis-service to themselves and the people they claim to be wanting to help.

Buildings cost money – regardless of how simple they may be. If you look at the current building (and watched the interviews with the pastor during the election filmed inside) it is obvious that this is not a church that spends huge amounts on a building. I would venture to say that there is more damage inside then the outside picture shows. This is not a small church – some where around 3000 people worship there, attending a church that size myself, if a fire were to damage the main portion of our building, it would easily cause a million dollars worth of damage. That does not mean that they spent a million to build it in the first place, just the estimated value of what was lost.
Jumping to conclusions about Christians because because their building suffered a million dollars worth of damage is ridiculous.
Govgirl on December 14, 2008 at 9:19 AM
Amen brother!
If this is proven to be arson it could carry attempted murder charges with it. Ladies inside working and the fire was set in the entry? Sick people!
conservnut on December 14, 2008 at 9:20 AM
It’s a big new church (1000 people show up for Sunday service alone) with a probably a hefty few million dollar mortgage. The fire went inbetween the stone walls where the wooden frame is and took a long time to extinguish. It makes it like an oven melting electrical wiring, pipes, etc. The structure will have to be dismantled in part to assess the damage. The issue will be how much $ it will take to restore the church structure.
The people who set it were professionals and knew that their arson would be hidden in the walls with much damage done before anyone realized it. It’s not easy to start a fire like this one and you know that’s what the fire marshall is thinking. I bet it was going on for at least an hour before the people in the church realized it.
gracie on December 14, 2008 at 9:24 AM

Yes because skinny people as a group were lynched, enslaved, and prevented from voting in America. The worst part is that you probably think you are speaking truth to power and making some sort of original point by blaming minorities for their troubles. Trust me, that’s a well-worn path.
crr6 on December 14, 2008 at 9:39 AM
What percent of blacks elgible to vote are now prevented from voting?
What percent of blacks in AMERICA as opposed to Africa are now enslaved?
It is a rare case that blacks are lynched . Likely skinny people, gay people, handicapped people are essentially lynched these days as much as black.
Your comment only serves to assist those that use the pains of their ancestors to have an excuse in life

Jamson64 on December 14, 2008 at 10:02 AM
So….a Church (which is actually the group of people attending) cannot “morally” build a building to worship in……..but Al Gore can morally build a house which sucks up 20x the norm in energy, and a Leftist has no problem defending that action

Truth is not decided by such miracles, but I do believe God was watching over these women, and as someone else said part of that “watching over” was the fact that someone wisely added the safety equipment that enhances our lives.

Religious leaders tend to get corrupted.
Look at Algor and his carbon credits.
Now, granted, it’s easy to sucker Americans with the global warming scam, ever since our education system turned to crap.
But still, being easy doesn’t make it right.

That’s because your line came straight from him. Say, “ho, ho, ho” and people will call you Santa.
While I understand your complaint more than I understand a complaint about spending money on a building, I still think you’re off base.
I thought conservatives were under the opinion that there is nothing wrong with making money. Isn’t that why we value capitalism?
Why are some professions more deserving of the money than a pastor? Does a lawyer really do more to deserve wealth than someone in the business of bringing people to Christ?
If a pastor is supposed to live in rags in order to give every dime to the poor than so are all Christians. Money wasted on a computer is money that could have gone to the poor, right?

Luckily, Jesus didn’t think being wealthy, and preaching the word were people that had “lost the purpose”
Lazarus, whom Jesus raised from the dead, was one of the wealthiest and most influential, but he also carried the Word. After being raised from the dead (great friend to have), he carried on his mission’s…yet still wore his “Rolex”.
I don’t think being wealthy, and living in luxury is one of the “black marks”, but that is what many have been taught…you can be wealthy, live a comfortable life, and be faithful…the public schools have done well.

I sincerely hope was random act of inhumanity and not politically motivated.
That said, I can’t help but think this is where the vitriolic atmosphere of American politics will ultimately take us. Somehow we have come to a place where policy differences become tied to a kind of visceral hatred which invites the unhinged to take violent actions against those they disagree with. If we cannot disagree without demonizing each other, the very foundations of our democracy and our society as a whole are in jeopardy.

Yeah, “give it to the poor”… And then help yourself with some of that money… like Judas used to do.
But he didn’t really understand that Jesus knew his heart, and that he would betray Him at the first opportunity… which he did.
You know, it seems that too many Liberals think the same way. “Help the poor! Dress on rags, pastors! We’ll distribute the money!” And then, they take part of the money collected for themselves.
Remember when the American Red Cross had raised a $ billion after September 11, only to have a huge amount of it separated for “administrative costs”? And then, we found out that she received a salary comparable to that of a U.S. Senator for her “charity” work. There was such a huge outrage over it that its then-president had to resign.
I frankly don’t think the pastor at Sarah’s church gets such a huge salary.

A thousand people attended that church every Sunday. For such a big congregation, a big building is needed. $ 1 million in damages is no surprise there. What is surprising is that the church was attacked.
I believe churches that stand for the truth of the Scriptures better get themselves as much security as they can have, because the nutjobs are out there with too much hate in their hearts and ready to explode. If you consider the attack on a Bible church congregation in Michigan by “gay-rights” activists last November (in which they terrorized even children), expect much worse coming in the horizon. Much worse.
