Malcolm: What’s taking Obama so long?

posted at 8:58 am on December 14, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Share on Facebook | regular view

When the FBI arrested Governor Rod Blagojevich for his alleged attempts to sell Barack Obama’s open Senate seat, the president-elect promised a full accounting of contacts between his team and Blagojevich’s office “in a few days”.  It’s been a few days, and the media has received information about contacts at levels as high as Rahm Emanuel, but not from Team Obama.  Andrew Malcolm at the Los Angeles Times wonders what’s taking so long:

That does not mean, of course, that Emanuel was involved in any wrongdoing. He’s a close political friend of Blagojevich’s in the clan-filled world of Chicago machine politics and inherited his 5th District House seat from Blagojevich when he became governor in 2002 on a reform platform.

As a representative of the outgoing senator and president-elect and a member of the same party, it would be hard to believe Emanuel or someone did not communicate somehow with Blagojevich or his staff.

What’s puzzled some people and raised suspicions among others is Emanuel’s refusal to talk about it (reportedly physically pushing one reporter’s tape recorder away and having a verbal altercation with another) and the delay on Obama’s part in releasing the promised diary of contacts.

From a practical point of view, if everything is above board, what’s to hide?

From a political communications and PR point of view, the atypically clumsy silence and delay creates doubts among even some Democrats, an information vacuum that opponents seek to fill with items like this video below and that has turned what could have been a one- or two-day state scandal story into nearly a week-long saga now involving a new national leader who promised to change the way the people’s business is done.

The New York Times suggests a partial answer:

Mr. Obama has said he has never spoken with the governor about the seat. But Mr. Obama’s aides have declined for five days to answer publicly questions about what discussions they had about the seat, with several saying they were doing so at the request of the office of Patrick J. Fitzgerald, the United States attorney for the Northern District of Illinois.

However, three paragraphs down from that explanation:

Mr. Obama said Thursday that his aides were looking through all of their possible contacts with the governor and would release more information in the coming days.

Well, which is it?  Has Fitzgerald’s office asked them to keep quiet, or will they get around to releasing the promised information on contacts between the two staffs?  If Fitzgerald asked them to keep that information quiet, why did Obama promise its release more than two days after the arrests?

Perhaps it’s just incompetence, but as Malcolm notes, that’s not exactly a confidence builder, either.  It looks like Team Obama has learned the art of stonewalling already, and he hasn’t even taken the oath of office yet.

Update: Stacy McCain wonders whether Emanuel will turn out to be the new Bert Lance.

Malcolm: What’s taking Obama so long?

TWO things!

1. All involved are making sure their “story” is the same.

2. OBAMA is WAITING for the electoral college to VOTE HIM IN before saying anything to jinx that.

In a surprising rebuke to the warriors who fought for him through tough times, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) on Sunday sided with President-elect Barack Obama and scolded the Republican National Committee for fanning the Illinois corruption scandal.

before the election, there were many posters to this blog & others that said they were from chicago or other places in illinois who said they were definitely not for obama. why can’t these people stand somewhere with a few signs saying “we want a special election” & get on tv? we need a media campaign here.

kelley in virginia on December 14, 2008 at 10:32 AM

Okay kelley, you want an answer? I am from Illinois and I don’t want a special election because it is unconstitutional. The power to appoint replacements to the Senate is the sole purview of the Governer. This last election there was a referendum on the ballot to hold a Constitutional Convention and it was voted down.

The longer Obama’s seat stays empty the better it is for conservatives because that is one less vote for Dingy Harry. Even if there were a special election, do you think there is a snowball’s chance in hell a Republican would win? No way Emporer Dailey would allow that.

11/19/08

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Republican John McCain, beaten by Democrat Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential race, plans to run for re-election as an Arizona senator in 2010.

McCain, 72, met with his senior advisers on Tuesday and formally set up a fundraising political action committee as a first step toward seeking re-election to a new six-year term, a McCain official said on Wednesday.

It would be McCain’s fifth term as a senator from Arizona. He and Obama met on Monday in Chicago and pledged to work together to face the financial crisis and reduce government waste.

Aw Man, you owe me a new keyboard for that one.. I see now, Super Secret 000000 is secretly compiling the intelligence that no one but a messiah could possibly gather.

Well, I wasn’t suggesting Obama would gather information from his staff that the feds already didn’t know (although, that is a possibility). I was suggesting that the Feds may not want some of that info released to the public because of the ongoing investigation.

If the report in LATimes article is true, and some members of the Obama team have been told (or asked) by Fitzgerald not to talk to the press, then this scenario would seem to make sense.

Tom_Shipley on December 14, 2008 at 11:14 AM

You know, in all due respect to the Republican National Committee and anybody — right now, I think we should try to be working constructively together, not only on an issue such as this, but on the economy stimulus package, reforms that are necessary.

I hope the first time the GOP senate caucus meets, someone tells McCain to shove the bipartisanship. It helped lose the election.

And when he starts going on about a stimulus package, remind he said he didn’t understand the economy. So leave it to members of the GOP who do.

Nice thread. I wonder about all those valid but unverified credit cards with false names tendered. How many are foreign cards? How many times did the campaign ring them up? Did Obama benefit from campaign workers using the cards to ring up multiple purchases of Obama books in ebook form. Can you imagine the cash hauled in by the campaign and by Obama personally from charges on cards for which people don’t want to be identified and won’t challenge the charges?

Yeah, it would be nice if we could find, at least, one person in the press who was willing to ask, at least, one of those questions to, at least, one of the people on the idiot messiah’s team, if not the Precedent-Elect, himself. But, that’s too much to hope for, evidently.

progressoverpeace on December 14, 2008 at 11:42 AM

Obama just needs to nurse it along till he’s in office. Then things change dramatically. Denial of access to the media is a powerful tool, plus he will have many options for diversionary moves. He’s taking the air out of the basketball right now. Just a few more weeks.

Well, maybe this will finally silence the “He’s a genius” (political or otherwise) crowd.

He now has the networks starting to do some real reporting. Even the AP is sticking it’s toe in the waters of real journalism when it comes to The One.

Obama will find out that it is a cardinal sin to blow off or lie to the media gods, almost on par with being a conservative. The collective narcissism of the media is far greater than his.

PackerBronco — You may think that losing to an HawaiianChicagoianAfricanAmerican would set some sort of liberal honor for Juan but that isn’t enough. His kissing of the ring and defending Him from this scandal will not be nearly enough to redeem and glorify himself! He must fully reject the haters and racists who make up the Republican party and apologize for ever mentioning Reverend Wright or other polarizing subjects. The One is taking us to a time where there will be trials to cleanse problems like this and public denunciations of the evil ones. They have such programs in Kenya and Cuba. Michael (Belly) Moore can be sent to do a movie.

Stonewalling? Stonewalling? Even if it is a kooky allegation, I’m glad he didn’t do it on the birth issues!

I’m sure in his mind he doesn’t even recognize how helpful the MSM was in his campaign. It was all him.

The media has a full slate of inaguration stories to run with in January, but once that dies down, if he keeps stonewalling, they’ll turn on him.

Plus he is surrounding himself with Clinton cronies. Man, this will be fun to watch.

The upcoming failure of the NYT is going to send shockwaves through the MSM. It only takes one shrewd publisher or broadcaster to figure out that the Times failed because it destroyed in circulation base by performing the function of primary propaganda arm of the Obama campaign.

Look for the Chicago Tribune to be take up the cudgel once it emerges from bankrupcy. They are already going full bore on the story. I had hoped the WaPo would be the paper to make the move but after their performance in running patently false stories this week it looks like the Post strategy is to take over from the failed Times.

Once someone breaks ranks then the competitive pressures will take over and with exception of the Post everyone else will start falling over themeselves to get the story. Obama is going to face a hostile press.

You are correct about the MSM’s being all-in with the BHO myth, but they also know how short the American public’s memory is (even though we have easily accessible videos and records of everything, these says – go figure). That’s why I think they might turn if they think he’s going down, no matter what they do. But, I won’t be holding my breath for that.
