Breaking: Blago chief of staff resigns

posted at 1:36 pm on December 12, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

John Harris, chief of staff for Governor Rod Blagojevich and arrested with him on Tuesday, resigned from his position today.  He dropped off the resignation and won’t return to the capital:

John Harris resigned this morning as Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s chief of staff, his lawyer said.

Harris dropped off his letter of resignation today in person and will not be going back to the office, according to his lawyer, Terry Ekl.

How significant is this?  It may signal that Harris wants to cut a deal, which he can’t do while serving Blagojevich.  Any deal Harris would cut would require him to plead guilty on some charges, and he’d necessarily need to give up his position (and Blagojevich’s successor would have his own CoS anyway).  Also, the fact that he’s already resigning may indicate that the deal has already been made, as that would be a bargaining chip for any deal negotiations.

It also puts pressure on Blagojevich to step aside.  What will he do for a chief of staff now?  People will hardly be lining up around the block to fill that role.  I suspect that everyone in the governor’s office is busy updating their resumes this week, anyway.  Harris’ departure will likely touch off an exodus in the next few days.

More shoes look ready to drop.  Stay tuned.

Rahm’s afraid to go down to transition headquarters?

Come on, how easy would it be to sneak him out of the house in a shoebox?

I’m getting regular death threats.
Vince Foster from the grave says, “How do you like it?”

Isn’t wittle rhammie the same guy who mailed people dead fish and repeatedly stabbed a tablecloth while reciting people’s names and saying “dead” “Dead” “Dead”

My wittle heart aches for him…..

Seriously though.. Death threats IF THEY REALLY HAPPENED are over the top. I for one want to see anyone guilty of selling a senate seat go through an agonizing trial and public humiliation..

One final thought.. IF he’s getting threats my guess is that they aren’t from the right.. I want to see the dancer sing an aria or two as do, I think, a lot of other people like me.

Oh that picture! How can anybody with that much pretty hair be guilty? Blago, like John Edwards before him, is being framed by Rovian like tactics against Democrats with good hair! Just because Rove is bald does that mean Blago should be persecuted? ;-0

This scandal is going to be a cloud on Obama no matter how much the incoming group of thugs ignore the fact. Let’s remember that Emanuel took Blago’s seat in Congress. Let’s remember that Obama has already lied about any contact with Blago since being elected. Let’s remember that this is Chicago and the whole group of Democrats are mobbed up to standards unheard of outside of Louisiana. Obama is guilty as hell and it is up to him to account for his activities with real answers instead of spouting bumper sticker slogans and calling non-supporters racist.

Harris is one of Daleys guys. He worked in the CPD prior. They (the FEDS) may be working that angle as well.

Okay put yourself in the mind of one of the Chicago political mafia (Daley, Obama, Blago, etc.)

Who do you fear more- Daley or the Feds? If Fitzgerald is able to get anybody from the family to turn he damned well better put them in the witness protection program because squealing on the political machine in Chicago is far more dangerous than taking down John Gotti.

As an American, it kills me that we are about to inagurate a political mafia kingpin as our President. John McCain had his faults but he wasn’t corrupt and his Senate seat wouldn’t have been put up for auction by organized criminals.

Dear Rahm,

You are such a pussy.

Signed,

And we heard over and over, how tough a guy/politician Rahm Emanuel is.

Who would you be more comfortable with as Whitehouse Chief of Staff:

Al Haig – “I’m in charge here in the Whitehouse”

or

Rahm E. – “I’m afraid to go outside”
