AP to Obama: Why so quiet about your team’s Blago probe?

Ed Rendell conveniently frames The One’s cautious handling of this as an amateur mistake that’s destined to prolong the coverage. Really? Amateurishness isn’t the first quality that springs to mind when I think of someone like Axelrod. Nor does the infamously combative Rahm Emanuel strike me as the type to be cowed into silence by death threats. Here’s a radical alternative theory: Maybe they’re honestly worried that someone on the team’s exposed and don’t want to give the press any new crumbs until they have their story straight.
Obama’s staff has declined to respond to even basic questions, like who is conducting the probe, how long it will take, what issues are being explored and whether they are working with federal investigators. Obama has promised transparency throughout his service and to divulge contacts his staff has had with Blagojevich’s office in the coming days. But his staff has locked down on inquiries in the meantime…
Emanuel is not a target of the probe, according to people who have been briefed on the investigation.
The two people spoke on a condition of anonymity because the criminal investigation is ongoing. One is a person close to Emanuel, who said he has been told by investigators that he’s not a subject of their probe…
Another question that Obama’s staff didn’t answer is how he knows that his office had no involvement if he had yet to gather all the facts about conversations they had with Blagojevich’s office. Speaking on the condition of anonymity, transition officials said they do not want to release any information on the internal review until it is completed.
My hunch is the same as Maguire’s — that someone on the team was approached by Blago to make a deal, that the offer was rejected, but that that person then neglected to tell Fitzgerald about it. Is that illegal, i.e. misprision of felony, or just shady? Such are the questions Team Barry may find itself momentarily consumed by.
In case you’re wondering, no, Obama’s approval rating hasn’t suffered from this at all.

changer1701 on December 12, 2008 at 9:00 PM
sethstorm — I will not waste time with your rather complete miss of an analogy.
First, wasn’t the Savior Elect supposed to be the transparent embodiment of the new politics? Ha. The liar has/had you fooled.
Second, the matter of the subpoena of Rove was already in District Court and the Congressional Committee was/is simply looking to stage a show. Look at the players involved.
Finally, to compare the firing of lawyers by President Bush with even the tip of some rancid slop from the Chicago cesspool as described above, is really blending a completely different set of circumstances. Maybe fraud by a sitting governor involving one of the top elected offices in the country means nothing to you.
In that case you are truly a Democrat and should work for ACORN.
And finally, Gee, Clinton never fired any lawyers, did he? And was one of the ninety odd investigating him?
Probably not discussed in sources you read.

I don’t any more. May they stay, where I said they are on December 12, 2008 at 8:50 PM, this thread, for about two years. We all need to learn the hard way.
There simply is no leadership in Congress, and please no one bore me with the One’s greatness. We really need to suffer for a good two years so that we never again allow something like this to happen. By then the (old) media will be spent from many perspectives and Al Gore can reclaim all that paper for something green for the planet.
It will all be good, but first must hurt a lot, for all of us, especially in the pockets, where we’ll get farked, while the others think they’re getting ecstasy.

1) Am I correct in assuming that the feds are allowed to misspeak, misdirect, fool, maskrivotia or whatever??
2) He might not be a target today, but tomorrow is a different issue
3) If someone goes to the press and says “The feds told me that Rahm is not a target” when the feds said no such thing, are they breaking any laws.

Take this bit from a non-lawyer for what it’s worth. My hunch is a bit different; someone on Obama’s team (probably Emanuel) was approached by Blago to make a deal, and after more than one negotiation session, negotations were broken off.
If every attempt by Blago and company to sell the seat to the Obama camp was rejected, then the non-reporting would probably fall under the “shady yet ‘legal’” category. If the person on the Obama team is a lawyer, the non-reporting would theoretically put that person’s law license in jeopardy as most states, including Illinois, have a Bar code of ethics that makes reporting more-or-less mandatory. If there were two-way dialogue, then it tilts toward illegality (specifically conspiracy).

Then it should be considered a generous offer with respect to what is revealed on either major party.
I have no problem with the 2nd Amendment, would like to see Iraq resolved without giving either major party a victory, I recognize that our country must be able to take military action, and that the Sierra Club is filled with hypocritical “ski-resort/lifestyle” environmentalists.
Pardon if my only sins are that I defend manufacturers of my nation that are north of the Mason-Dixon, excoriate Wall Street where due, and ask that a certain political operator come clean from years of mudslinging.
Thankfully BofA decided to distance themselves from Blagojevich. They didn’t want people looking at BofA as wanting instant vengeance for government action. Other folks of Chicago politics may not be so lucky.

A reporter named Perez (can’t remember his first name) said that all the MSM ‘wished Obama well’ and to the effect it was a sad day that Blagogate had to come in to derail his agenda when everything was proceeding tickedly-boo. He was fawning so much over Obama that you thought he may be the next Senator from Illinois. MSM, what don’t you understand about the phrase radical, socialist Marxist who is a devotee of Saul Alinsky and His Rules for Radicals. What don’t you understand about Obama seeing the Constitution as a flawed document that needs to address ‘the redistribution of wealth’. Obama is a false prophet whose only goal to is to solidify his power and to implement his agenda. The only thing stopping him now is the 22nd Amendment. That is the part that I think pretty plainly says Obama, himself, was directing these negotiations, approving them (or not) as options were provided to him. “Do what you have to do, but don’t leave a trail of crumbs that will lead back to me.” I think they are all guilty of something. If Emanuel isn’t “a target,” it really doesn’t mean anything other than he’s part of the food chain. Anyone heard anything from Daley? Or has anyone noticed a high-ranking Democrat who has been unusually quiet in the past couple of weeks or a big-name consultant along the lines of a John Lapp-type who is hiding under his desk? I’d love nothing better than this to lead to Obama, but that’s about as likely as me getting a dream kitchen make-over for Christmas.

Any tool from MSNBC can serve as Colonel Klink. Meanwhile, I’ll be Arte Johnson wearing the German uniform, hiding behind the plant, quietly observing, “Veddddy intedddesting.”
I find this most fascinating. Rahm was supposed to be the Beltway insider who’d be available to watch Obama’s back. I predict he’ll have no choice but to fall on his sword. Maybe there’s an obvious replacement, but losing Rahn so early seems akin to losing a valuable piece in a chess match on the second move. How inept is this administration going to be?

Doesn’t really look like they are doing their jobs unless their job is trying to spin things Obama’s way. The attempt to make Blago look like a crazy man, the emphasis that “Obama is not a target of this investigation” — seems more like more of the same than doing their job.
Some stuff they just can’t cover over, they do have a certain amount of recognition that they need to maintain some small level of credibility or even the most imbecilic of Obama voters will catch on.
Note how they report negative news with the greatest of reluctance — they are almost apologetic about it.
