Video: “Terminator Salvation” trailer
posted at 4:50 pm on December 11, 2008 by Allahpundit
Worth a ticket? It has a big(gish) star and isn’t as egregiously generic as the new “Star Trek” trailer, although it does of course contain the requisite shot of the hero and his nemesis face to face a foot apart doing the alpha-male staredown. And yet … something feels off. For one thing, they’re painting on a big canvas a la “Aliens” when T1 and T2 were really about the personal battle between Arnold and his foe. For another thing, they’ve got the human characters in the lead instead of the ‘bots, in whom all fascination lies. It’d be like shooting “Star Wars” from the perspective of the Storm Troopers. Or a Romero movie from the perspective of the zombies.
Which, come to think of it, would be awesome.

So that’s what Pelosi looks like at night when she takes the human suit off.
YellowDawg on December 11, 2008 at 4:54 PM
If you’re concerned about the big canvas, then the alpha male staredown should reassure you. And I wouldn’t count on the trailer to accurately convey the focus, either.

If they are going to pull “the future has been changed,” why not throw in some machine vs. machine, or cyborg action?
Count to 10 on December 11, 2008 at 5:00 PM
We need more dirty harry’s and less metrosexual action stars. The gritty voice is awesome for the non-deaf.
Chubbs65 on December 11, 2008 at 5:01 PM
Dude, I can’t freakin’ wait! This is the movie I’ve been waiting for. The best parts of the first three movies were the scenes of the future and the war against the machines. Awesome.
Tony737 on December 11, 2008 at 5:01 PM
It’s odd. Back in the early 90′s after T2 came out, I was dying to see a Terminator movie about the future war against Skynet(and no, the T2-3D ride does not count).
But now that it’s almost here, I can’t seem to feel any excitement over the thing. And I’m not a T3 hater. I thought it was a decent but superfluous sequel to two classic films(kinda like Godfather Part III).
Doughboy on December 11, 2008 at 5:02 PM
No. Two reasons.
1. Terminator 3 was an abomination.
2. They ditched the numbers. When that happens, everything goes to hell.

Apparently the ending of this leaked onto the Web a few months back. If true, it’s a pretty big twist on the franchise.

I guess Arnie is too old to play – Boom
We don’t need no steenkin’ Arnie. this takes place after the nukes fall. The war against the machines. However, it does look like there a T-800. I hope they make it a trilogy.
I was dying to see a Terminator movie about the future war against Skynet – Dough
Me too, I was hoping for a Skynet 1, Skynet 2 and ending with Skynet 3 where you see Kyle going after the firt Arnie.
There was a commercial for T2 showing the ‘Arnie’ ski being added to the T-800 frame. They could add that in and close the series out.

The biggest problem with T3, IMO, was John Connor. He was too whiny and incompetent relative to his childhood experiences and training. But I’ve been looking forward to a post judgment day movie and hope it lives up to T1 and T2.

Christian Bale?

D2Boston on December 11, 2008 at 5:14 PM
T3 basically did it for me, too. The end of T2 was great: A dark highway and you had no idea what was going to happen in the future. T3 was a cheap money making trip. They should’ve also stopped after Aliens—sigh another franchise destroyed.

Don’t ruin it for the rest of us!
To this day I STILL hate John Tesh for ruining T2! I’ll never forget it, I was stationed in Germany and we were watching Entertainment Tonight on AFN.
He said “In T2, Arnold finally gets to play a good guy.” The way it was filmed, you didn’t know that until the three of them met in the hallway. Thanks a lot John Tesh!
Tony737 on December 11, 2008 at 5:17 PM
I love both Terminator and Aliens. That is what I grew up with… Though the last Alien/Predator film was not what I thought it was going to be.
This is my Anime!

The biggest problem with T3, IMO, was John Connor. – Rock
Yeah, he sucked And he didn’t even LOOK like John Connor. T2 had a kid and and older guy that looked alike, straight black hair, round face, etc. This guy had a curly blong hair and an oval face. Bale looks like Connor and should fit into the role nicely. The trailer looks great!
Tony737 on December 11, 2008 at 5:19 PM
I’m with AP on this one. It looks lame in the same way that the new battlestar galactica is lame. Too much personal melodrama, too much overacting, not enough focus on the plot construction and basic suspense creation. They try to make it too complex, too many characters, and it just waters it down.
They just don’t know how to make movies today. So they do remakes of the past, but even those they can’t execute because they can’t resist the urge to “change” them. What do you expect? Those responsible for today’s movies, the directors and writers, are all obama supporters, mindless liberals trying to put their stamp on our culture. They are incapable of creating anything good on their own, and what they co-opt they destroy.

Yeah… putting Arnie skin on a skeleton. They could do that digitally – with Arnie’s approval. Actually, the effects are getting so good we may not need actors in the future. Only… the actor’s guild would be pretty upset.

upinak on December 11, 2008 at 5:30 PM
It’s been done, but not by Romero. I saw a short film a few months ago that appeared to be a single slow tracking shot of a house being attacked during a zombie apocalypse. You could see a couple of dudes and a girl running from/fighting against the shambling undead from weird artsy angles but in the end you found out that the “camera” was actually a POV shot from a zombie that was the girl’s father.
While not as unspeakably lame as the South Korean green village, it wasn’t good. Maybe if Romero did it, then it might be slightly more good.
ScottMcC on December 11, 2008 at 5:33 PM
Hold on…the future can change?
Oh, great. Here come another dozen sequels and at least ten more seasons of The Sarah Connor Chronicles.
And me…I’d probably watch them all. Just this week I got the trilogy on bluray, so I’m hyped for the new movie.

m064404 on December 11, 2008 at 5:34 PM
Agreed. Most of them are also incredibly dull when not saying things written for them by someone else. I would only save Peter O’Toole from the Rise of the Machines, he would amuse us all telling stories around the burning tires.

Clue to “scientific” community and humanity in general:
Never think you are intelligent enought to create ‘artificial intelligence’ without first thoroughly understanding your own intelligence.
Which is a paradoxical impossibility, since awareness is both constantly expanding and rooted in the unfathomable Unconscious.
Monsters from the Id will look tame compared to techno-demons from the half-witted.
A.I. is a recipe for species-cide.
profitsbeard on December 11, 2008 at 5:39 PM
I’m all for macho male voices, but this is not it. This is the voice of someone who’s been told by the director, “Do that macho male voice thing. Yeah, that’s good, but a little more gravelly. A little more barely-contained rage. A little more ‘Honestly, I’m not a pansy, I’m a badass mudderfugger, but in a very 21st century multicultural metrosexual-kinda way.’ Yep, perfect — now do that voice with every friggin’ line in the script!”
Splashman on December 11, 2008 at 5:39 PM
Brad Pitt has has a permanently pole-axed expression ever since Angelina jumped his bones; like he ran into an invisible wall or something. He looks dumb, but she probably does that to all the guys.

I think Bale’s voice is sexy (lol).
I don’t find his voice to be a distraction. It reminds me of Clint Eastwood’s voice.
I love Bale and think he is a great actor. I am impressed by his movies, especially “3:10 to Yuma” and “Rescue Dawn” and the “Batman” series.
The trailer is not that interesting to me. I did like all three Terminators. Yes even the third one. I might need a third trailer to convince me to go to the theater to watch this, if not, I’ll wait until it comes out on DVD.

I think I watched the first Terminator the same night I watched Alien, all before the age of ten.
My dad was into horror movies, particularly the sci-fi kind.
I never cared much for the man vs. machine plot line (and am even less into the fall of civilization genre), so I only saw T2 when someone else was playing it, and I never watched T3.

Who needs Arnold at this point in the story? It’s after the nukes and before the 800 series is created. Let’s have a look at the older models, like the 600 with rubber skin. (“We could spot them easy.” – Kyle) The Arnie 800 will come later, maybe in part 5 or 6?
Tony737 on December 11, 2008 at 8:09 PM
Dude, Fallout 3 rocks. I’ve got over 80 hours in since October and I’m not even through the main storyline.
Of course it can. Haven’t you heard of the famous trousers of time? One wrong turn and you go down another leg entirely? That’s a Terry Pratchett invention, by the way, but a good one.
I’m actually kind of pumped up about this movie. I’m starting to like Christian Bale…and considering how much I hated American Psycho that’s saying something. I think he’ll play a good John Connor; better than those last 2 dipsh*ts anyway. And as far as Terminator 3 goes, the imagined tech of the ‘evil’ terminator was a lot more palatable and enjoyable, than that liquid metal bullsh*t from T2. I HATED the liquid metal terminator. That was a huge letdown. Other than a better cyborg, T3 was meh, not bad.
austinnelly on December 11, 2008 at 8:24 PM
Pass on this one. I hate Christian Bale. Every time I see him I think of him as the metrosexual slicer and dicer in American Psycho. He was the worst part of 3:10 to Yuma, a total waste of a remake. And they haven’t come up with a decent Batman yet, the bad guys and the gimmicks are the real stars. All that said, pre-quels or whatever you want to call this, always stink…Star Wars being a good example. At this point the whole future cyborgs versus humans seems pointless, and what John Connors was/is like is even more irrelevant.
As for Star Trek, it’s too late for this pre-quel…it should have been done ten years ago at least.
