Rezko’s singing, Blago investigation shows; Update: Feds asking about Obama-Rezko land deal

How much larger will the scandal surrounding Rod Blagojevich grow?  According to a footnote in the affadavit filed by US Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald, the sky could be the limit.  Convicted political fixer Tony Rezko has been singing to investigators, and his connections reach all the way to the White House:

A footnote to the 76-page criminal complaint and affidavit charging Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich (D) with soliciting bribes confirms what has long been rumored — that a former longtime friend and fundraiser for President-elect Barack Obama is talking to federal prosecutors in hopes of a reduced sentence.

Antoin “Tony” Rezko’s offer to provide authorities with evidence of others’ wrongdoing is “not complete,” and prosecutors are working to corroborate the claims he has made so far, the footnote said.

Rezko, a 53-year-old developer, was convicted in June of 16 criminal counts, including fraud, money laundering and abetting bribery. He is in custody awaiting sentencing.

Prosecutors depicted Rezko at trial as a fixer for Blagojevich and the man to see to secure a high-level appointment with the governor’s administration. Rezko had been a longtime fundraiser for Blagojevich and other Illinois politicians, including Obama.

The Washington Post spends the next six paragraphs stating and analyzing Fitzgerald’s statement from Tuesday that nothing in the affadavit has anything to do with Barack Obama.  They coo over how “unusual” it is for prosecutors to issue those kinds of statements, but that ignores the context of Fitzgerald’s statement.  Reporters peppered him with questions about Obama and his potential connections to the scandal, and Fitzgerald told them to read the affadavit, because everything he had was in there.

Obviously, this is an ongoing investigation, and Fitzgerald will go where the evidence leads.  Thus far, it has led to Blagojevich, although it seems unlikely that Rezko has any connection to the Illinois governor’s attempts to sell Obama’s Senate seat; that had to come from another source.  Rezko will have plenty of information on other potential instances of corruption involving Illinois politics, and everyone with whom Rezko worked could be implicated.

Obama and Rezko worked together for more than ten years in Illinois politics.  If Rezko was as dirty as a jury verdict states and as federal prosecutors believe, how likely is it that anyone employing him was squeaky clean?  Their political association lasted over ten years, during the period when Rezko was corrupting state politics.  It’s certainly possible that Rezko’s corruption didn’t involve Obama, but to assume it didn’t seems far too credulous by half, especially with the present example of Illinois politics before us now.

If Rezko’s singing, many politicians are sweating.  Obama may be one of them.  Let’s see what happens before being dismissive of the possibility.

Update: Mickey Kaus puts together this article with a Washington Times story from Election Day (via Jim Geraghty):

A former Illinois real estate specialist says FBI agents have questioned him about a Chicago property that had been bought by convicted felon Tony Rezko’s wife and later sold to the couple’s next-door neighbor, Sen. Barack Obama.

The real estate specialist, Kenneth J. Conner, said bank officials replaced an appraisal review he prepared on the property and FBI agents were investigating in late 2007 whether the Rezko-Obama deal was proper.

“Agents and I talked about payoff, bribe, kickback for a long time, though it took them only a short number of minutes of talking with me while looking at the appraisal to acknowledge what they already seemed to know: The Rezko lot was grossly overvalued,” Mr. Conner told The Washington Times Monday.

“Rezko paid the asking price on the same day Obama paid $300,000 less than the asking price to the same seller for his adjacent mansion,” he said. “This begs the question of payoff, bribe, kickback.”

Rezko’s singing.  The only thing we don’t know is the extent of the tune — and this at least suggests that has several verses.

At this point Barack Obama has no executive privilege. Fitz has a short time to subpoena conversations and documents from any of Obama’s staff or Barack himself.

If Rezko’s singing, many politicians are sweating. Obama may be one of them. Let’s see what happens before being dismissive of the possibility

.

Hooray. My favorite overlooked campaign issue is back. Someone explain the following:

1. How did Obama manage to get his seller to knock $300K off the asking price in a seller’s market? I’m convinced that Rezko was in the middle of this giving the seller “an offer he couldn’t refuse.” My guess is that Rezko made arrangements to get the seller his $300K, but under the table so that it wouldn’t be included in the Form 1099-B that goes to the IRS. I’m guessing that the seller had about an $800K gain if he got the full $1.65M asking price. Getting $300K under the table knocks the gain down to $500K, which he could exclude on his return (if he’s married) under the tax code.

2. How did Rezko’s wife come up with the ability to borrow $625K to buy the neighboring lot? There are a couple of sleezy banks in the Chicago area that Resko and Blago (I think) have ties to. Rezko’s wife had no assets and a job paying something like $50K a year. Well, maybe it was a NINJA loan that Barry Frank and Chris Dodd would approve of.

3. Obama later paid Rezko’s wife $104,500 for a slice of property that was appraised at $40,500. How is that not a $64,000 taxable gift for federal gift tax purposes? Has Obama filed a federal gift tax return yet reporting that gift? I want to see a copy of that return reporting that gift.

BuckeyeSam on December 11, 2008 at 1:18 PM

So, I’m sure Obama wouldn’t have a problem taking a polygraph, right?

marklmail on December 11, 2008 at 11:42 AM

No problem at all. Most sociopaths can probably pass a lie detector test.

Hey, some of the corruption extends to the Chicago hospital system. Could the good Mrs. O be involved somehow? Please?

mrsmwp on December 11, 2008 at 1:18 PM

Hate to sound all wingnut on this but none of these stories will matter if they are not reported by the O-Media, which they wont be.

Or if they are, the headlines will all read, “Right-wing conservatives hound Obama as he tries to save the planet – women, children & Muslims hardest hit.”

DeathToMediaHacks on December 11, 2008 at 1:12 PM

Sorry, no sale. Too many unanswered questions, some of which deal with the administration of this country’s tax laws. See above. To my knowledge, Obama’s already ignoring the filing requirement for a federal gift tax return. And he may have worked a scheme to enable his seller avoid capital gains taxes. Time for BO to come clean.

He sort-of acknowledged the Rezko deal was questionable. I don’t think he ever actually acknowledged anything in specific detail as to whether he did get a price break while Rezko paid the difference, etc., if that’s what happened.

Of course, a “governor from his neighborhood” just got charged for trying to horsetrade the seat Obama resigned for cash & prizes. He may have reached out to the Obama camp for their bid. There’s no proof at this time that Obama or anyone closely advising him was part of the conversations, but the responses from the Obama camp have been… interesting.

Even you should be able to see this isn’t just a rehash of election ‘08 history.

Bear with me, but ALL this reminds me of the time when I was a teenager and I was riding around with a guy who wasn’t my boyfriend. Fitzgerald has to know that if he goes after Obama or Daly, he will not only lose the Federal Prosecutor job (which he probably would have anyway) but the Dems will give him the Ken Starr treatment. No matter how bipartisan his prosecutorial past is, no matter how stellar his reputation, they will destoy him and the MSM will help them do it. Besides, if they are afraid that he may run for Illinois governor in 2010 (Remember, Big Jim Thompson got the Governorship after being a prosecutor) they would want to trash Fitzgerald anyway.

What kind of life does he want? Does he have the guts that Ken Starr did? We will have to see.

Future presidential pardon for Rezko?
Probably not. Perhaps this is why Rezko is singing.
Maybe he has something on BO, maybe not.
But looking into the property bought & sold, it is mighty fishy, the ‘deals’ BO got and gave.
If it looks like a stinker and smells like a stinker, I’ll wager it’s a stinker.
Sing Rezko, sing.
Hopefully you will not disappear, a la Jack Ruby style.

Badger40 on December 11, 2008 at 2:27 PM

Maybe the reason BO has never released his original BC is because he was waiting until he got in some deep doo-doo like this situation (which he had to know was coming) and, voila, he will whip it out. Then he’ll be like “see, I’m OK, I’m a citizen, I never lie, blah, blah, blah…”. I wouldn’t put it past the slimy b@stard.

mrsmwp on December 11, 2008 at 2:42 PM

Even you should be able to see this isn’t just a rehash of election ‘08 history.

The Blago issues are not. But they also aren’t about Barack Obama. Obama did not support Blago’s re-election run in 2006. He didn’t campaign for him or fundraise for him, that’s significant. Also, Blago is on tape cursing Obama for not offering him anything but “appreciation” for putting his preferred selection in the Senate. The problem for the tin foilers out there is that the facts of the Blago case, based only on the affafavit, exonerate Obama. Why would Blago be so enraged at Obama if any kind of a substantive deal was in place. All you have to work with is rampant speculation and eventually you will settle into the position that there’s a big “cover up” rather than just admit that Obama has nothing to do with how corrupt Ron Blagojevic is.

As for Rezko. There’s no question Obama got a sweetheart deal and he may have helped his seller avoid capital gains taxes. Is this all that uncommon in the political world. I’ve said over and over again that Obama is JUST a politician, like all the others. And considering that premise he’s remarkably clean in comparison. He didn’t seek to invest in a bunch of real estate and make out like a bandit. He bought a family home, and that appears to be it. However illegal it may have been, it’s so much LESS illegal than most politicians that the American people really probably won’t care. Those who were annoyed by the Rezko thing had an opportunity to learn about it when Hillary Clinton raised it in the S.C. primary and it was covered for a few days afterwards. And then again when McCain re-raised it in one of the fairest and best ads of the campaign about the Chicago machine. However the problem then and the problem now isthat Obama just isnt involved in the aspects of these individuals lives that have landed them in jail.

The Blago issues are not. But they also aren’t about Barack Obama. Obama did not support Blago’s re-election run in 2006. He didn’t campaign for him or fundraise for him, that’s significant.

Please see wikipedia on Blago:

Blagojevich was endorsed by many Democratic leaders (with the notable exception of Attorney General Lisa Madigan, who claimed it was a conflict of interest since her office was investigating Blagojevich),[28] including then-Illinois Senator Barack Obama, who endorsed the governor in early 2005 and spoke on his behalf at the August 2006 Illinois State Fair.[20]

Obama may not be implicated in the Blago affair. He did have a close political relationship with him.

I’ve said over and over again that Obama is JUST a politician, like all the others. And considering that premise he’s remarkably clean in comparison.

I’ll take your premise that he’s “remarkably clean in comparison” with the same hilarity that I accept that he’s “uh..er..um… articulate.”

I’m pretty sure that articulate means that, when the words come out, they are formed into a sentence structure that’s recognizable and coherent. Lots of politicians can not do that. But you know what else has happened? Republicans have not risen, more people are back to being “undecided.” So please, rather than organize to register/persuade those voters, continue attacking Obama and only having a negative message for the country. We saw how WELL that worked for Democrats in 2002 and 2004. Except how it didn’t. And we saw how badly a positive message for the future worked in 2008, except of course that it worked brilliantly. Between BDS, Birtherism and Blago conspiracy obsession you guys will find yourselves in 2010, with alot of conspiracy theories and no viable candidates. AWESOME!

More on: Obama did not support Blago’s re-election run in 2006. He didn’t campaign for him or fundraise for him, that’s significant.

From Jake Tapper re: that 2006 gubernatorial IL race: (my emphasis)

In 2004, then-Gov. Blagojevich enthusiastically endorsed Obama for the Senate seat after he won the nomination, and Obama endorsed Blagojevich for his 2006 re-election race in early 2005.

In the Summer of 2006, then-U.S. Sen. Obama backed Blagojevich even though there were serious questions at the time about Blago’s hiring practices.

At the time, numerous state agencies had had records subpoenaed, with U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald telling authorities he was looking into “very serious allegations of endemic hiring fraud” with a “number of credible witnesses.”

In an interview with the Chicago Daily Herald in July 2006, then-Sen. Obama said, “I have not followed closely enough what’s been taking place in these investigations to comment on them. Obviously I’m concerned about reports that hiring practices at the state weren’t, at times, following appropriate procedures. How high up that went, the degree at which the governor was involved, is not something I’m going to speculate on.

“If I received information that made me believe that any Democrat had not been acting in the public interest, I’d be concerned,” Obama said.

That said, Mr. Obama said, “If the governor asks me to work on his behalf, I’ll be happy to do it.”

Apparently the governor did. At the Illinois State Fair in August 2006, Obama spoke on Blagojevich’s behalf.

“We’ve got a governor in Rod Blagojevich who has delivered consistently on behalf of the people of Illinois,” Obama told the crowd.

DeathToMediaHacks

What are you babbling about? This isn’t just about Obama’s association w/Blago on this particular issue. There are hundreds of hours of wire taps. Rezko is talking. All of this could have come out b4 the election, but didn’t b/c our media chose to create and elect the most far-left, radical, zero experience candidate in the history of the process. Whatever. The point is, Obama never confronted corruption in Illinois. On the contrary, it would seem that he paid and played.

As a previous poster put it:

Everyone around Obama is a radical, but not him.

Everyone arond Obama is corrupt, but not him.

Everyone around Obama is a felon, or soon will be, but not him.

It strains credulity to believe that he is “clean.” His associations will continue to haunt him throughout his presidency and there is nothing that the media, the left, or the ignorant masses can do to make it go away. It is simply a fact that he surrounded himself w/these people by his own admission since college. Whether anyone cares, we’ll see, but they are not conspiracy theories. They are the facts.

This new post-partisan era seems strangely familiar. Let’s wait and see what Obama wants us to think about this.

Ha! Really? Oh wonderful. I do look forward to seeing that effort crash and burn. Oh conservatives. You just. don’t. get. it. There are some new poll numbers you should check out. No, I’m not talking Obama’s SKY HIGH approval numbers two days after the Blago scandal broke (Rasmussen). I’m talking about the fact that Democrats as a whole have fallen in the generic ballot. AWESOME!

NoDonkey on December 11, 2008 at 5:15 PM

lol…Obama is not even President yet and he is already embroiled in a corruption scandal. The funny thing about it is that he seems to be stuck between a rock and a hard place. If he pardons him when he takes office people will believe he is corrupt and only did it to save his own ass. Where as if he does nothing there is a very good chance that Rezko will sell him out for lighter sentence, in which case Obama’s only hope is that the Media will run interference for him and spin the storey in way that limits the political damage.

Well done Sir. Fitzgerald has proven himself to be tenacious in the past. While I fear this time might be an exception, perhaps his investigation will go far enough to unmask AO.

JiangxiDad on December 11, 2008 at 5:21 PM

If Rezko’s singing, many politicians are sweating. Obama may be one of them. Let’s see what happens before being dismissive of the possibility.

To the contrary, I’m just glad the bastard-elect’s unsavory assoiciates are FINALLY getting some of the same scrutiny that Palin had during the general campaign. There is no way one can come up through the political ranks from community agitator/race-baiter to US Senator without being on the inside of Chicago politics. So far Obama’s answers to direct questions have been utterly unsatisfactory for a bastard how pretends that he is above all taint from people that were insiders for decades.

The push for answers needs to continue and I suspect as a result 2012 will be Biden/Clinton because the bastard is going to be going down in flames from the unethical behavior of his administration before or and after taking office.

It’s hard for Republicans to do what Dems do. They want bodies (votes) and will say anything to get them. Republicans want people to agree with them. That leads to different recruitment styles. I’m not sure it can change. Even worse, I’m not sure it should.

JiangxiDad on December 11, 2008 at 5:23 PM

Fitzmas is taking on an entirely new meaning.

No kidding. The slower the drip the more damaging for Obama and, to date, he and his thugs have been less than forthcoming about who in his junta knew what and when. Obama has already been caught in the lie that he never met with Blago and it is only a matter of time before the Obama people who DID talk pay for play will begin to emerge. Obama isn’t even in office yet and he’s living up to my prediction that this will be the most corrupt administration ever. Sucks being right.

highhopes on December 11, 2008 at 5:24 PM

The funny thing is if this had been a corruption scandal involving George W Bush the entire press corps would have been demanding the he resign or that the House commence impeachment proceedings by now.

drudge had that update the day the blago stuff broke. where have you guys been?

mmoran0226 on December 11, 2008 at 5:37 PM

I don’t think they can stop Fitzgerald on this.Their cover-up would be to obvious.Blago is an absolute liberal weasel and will do anything to save his own butt.
Rezko is apparently already in this mode.
‘If’ there is trouble her for Obama himself instead of peripherally (which is starting to look likely),then Camelot
turns into He!! for Obama really quick.
It could already be starting for the press who made absolute fools of themselves praying at the alter of Obama then running off to grovel through Palin’s trash cans.

I thought some of these quotes from today’s analysis were right on target:

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122895356506696347.html

What remains to be seen is whether this episode will put an end to what Chicago Tribune political columnist John Kass calls the national media’s “almost willful” fantasy that Mr. Obama and Chicago’s political culture have little to do with each other. Mr. Kass notes that the media devoted a lot more time and energy to investigating the inner workings of Sarah Palin’s Wasilla, Alaska, than it has looking at Mr. Obama’s Chicago connections.

http://www.bostonherald.com/news/opinion/op_ed/view.bg?articleid=1138271

Surprise!

What, you didn’t know that Obama made his bones in the Chicago political machine? You didn’t know, for example, that he won his first election by getting one of his political mentors thrown off the ballot? Or about his financial support from corrupt Chicago moneyman Tony Rezko? Or how Obama and sidekick Rahm Emanuel advised the campaign of a machine hack named Rod Blagojevich?

You didn’t? Don’t feel bad. According to a post-election Zogby poll, a large majority of Obama supporters didn’t know key facts like these, either. And why should they? After all, NBC, The Boston Globe-Democrat and the rest of the Partisan Press had little interest in reporting these stories.

Just before the election, Tom Brokaw and Charlie Rose had a fascinating on-air conversation conceding how little they knew about Obama, his policies and politics. “We really don’t know him,” Brokaw confessed.
I was one of the viewers throwing stuff at my TV and shouting, “Then why don’t you ask him, Tom?” Well, it’s too late now.

Six weeks after the election, we’re finally meeting Barack Obama, Chicago-style.

I know we all threw a lot at the TV and probably our computers watching these ignorant democratic activists that
call themselves “journalist” sucking up and kissing Obama’s a$$ while they grilled Palin on buying a tanning bed and made fun of McCain because of his POW injuries.

Nothing would be finer than watching the MSM go straight down the tubes dragging their failed community organizer with them.

The citizens are the members of the civil society; bound to this society by certain duties, and subject to its authority, they equally participate in its advantages. The natives, or natural-born citizens, are those born in the country, of parents who are citizens.

I just checked a couple of lamestream sites. The bailout is top center. The chicago stuff is in the margins.

I just did a search for blagojevich and it looks like there isn’t any increased searching on that term yet although the news articles are spiking. (Google trends shows you relative search volume)

So, based on that I would say that the media is going it’s appointed task in keeping boobus americanus fat dumb and stupid.

I would say that one thing everyone can do is talk this up. Try to make it go viral. “Hey how about that scandal”.. Whatever.

BTW the trends can be found at trends.google.com

One thing to keep in mind is that blagojevich is a bit hard to spell for a lot of people so that might be skewing the analysis a bit.

If you plug blagojevich obama in to trends, you see that there is a bit of a spike in people looking at that search term which is encouraging.

It’s obvious Blago hated him, it’s obvious Obama and any of his admin wanted nothing to do with this.
