Rezko’s singing, Blago investigation shows; Update: Feds asking about Obama-Rezko land deal

posted at 9:09 am on December 11, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

How much larger will the scandal surrounding Rod Blagojevich grow?  According to a footnote in the affadavit filed by US Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald, the sky could be the limit.  Convicted political fixer Tony Rezko has been singing to investigators, and his connections reach all the way to the White House:

A footnote to the 76-page criminal complaint and affidavit charging Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich (D) with soliciting bribes confirms what has long been rumored — that a former longtime friend and fundraiser for President-elect Barack Obama is talking to federal prosecutors in hopes of a reduced sentence.

Antoin “Tony” Rezko’s offer to provide authorities with evidence of others’ wrongdoing is “not complete,” and prosecutors are working to corroborate the claims he has made so far, the footnote said.

Rezko, a 53-year-old developer, was convicted in June of 16 criminal counts, including fraud, money laundering and abetting bribery. He is in custody awaiting sentencing.

Prosecutors depicted Rezko at trial as a fixer for Blagojevich and the man to see to secure a high-level appointment with the governor’s administration. Rezko had been a longtime fundraiser for Blagojevich and other Illinois politicians, including Obama.

The Washington Post spends the next six paragraphs stating and analyzing Fitzgerald’s statement from Tuesday that nothing in the affadavit has anything to do with Barack Obama.  They coo over how “unusual” it is for prosecutors to issue those kinds of statements, but that ignores the context of Fitzgerald’s statement.  Reporters peppered him with questions about Obama and his potential connections to the scandal, and Fitzgerald told them to read the affadavit, because everything he had was in there.

Obviously, this is an ongoing investigation, and Fitzgerald will go where the evidence leads.  Thus far, it has led to Blagojevich, although it seems unlikely that Rezko has any connection to the Illinois governor’s attempts to sell Obama’s Senate seat; that had to come from another source.  Rezko will have plenty of information on other potential instances of corruption involving Illinois politics, and everyone with whom Rezko worked could be implicated.

Obama and Rezko worked together for more than ten years in Illinois politics.  If Rezko was as dirty as a jury verdict states and as federal prosecutors believe, how likely is it that anyone employing him was squeaky clean?  Their political association lasted over ten years, during the period when Rezko was corrupting state politics.  It’s certainly possible that Rezko’s corruption didn’t involve Obama, but to assume it didn’t seems far too credulous by half, especially with the present example of Illinois politics before us now.

If Rezko’s singing, many politicians are sweating.  Obama may be one of them.  Let’s see what happens before being dismissive of the possibility.

Update: Mickey Kaus puts together this article with a Washington Times story from Election Day (via Jim Geraghty):

A former Illinois real estate specialist says FBI agents have questioned him about a Chicago property that had been bought by convicted felon Tony Rezko’s wife and later sold to the couple’s next-door neighbor, Sen. Barack Obama.

The real estate specialist, Kenneth J. Conner, said bank officials replaced an appraisal review he prepared on the property and FBI agents were investigating in late 2007 whether the Rezko-Obama deal was proper.

“Agents and I talked about payoff, bribe, kickback for a long time, though it took them only a short number of minutes of talking with me while looking at the appraisal to acknowledge what they already seemed to know: The Rezko lot was grossly overvalued,” Mr. Conner told The Washington Times Monday.

“Rezko paid the asking price on the same day Obama paid $300,000 less than the asking price to the same seller for his adjacent mansion,” he said. “This begs the question of payoff, bribe, kickback.”

Rezko’s singing.  The only thing we don’t know is the extent of the tune — and this at least suggests that has several verses.

Like i said here on hot air in july of 2008 Rezko and now the Gov. are going to sing loud and clear. This will reach all the way to Obama and a lot of his staff. The sad thing is the justice dept knew most of the facts long ago but were afraid to bring them out. They were afraid of being called racist.

Obama will come out of this clean, because if there is anything that touches him it will be swept over or rationalized by the propagandist MSM. The majority of the people that voted for him will not want to admit their vote was wrong. His approval numbers will remain high I predict. We conservatives won’t EVER be able to say I told you so, because the Obamists will admit nothing.

You missed my point, it is the threat that brings out the truth.

She had intimate knowledge, by her interruptions and rants over the phone,
That implicates her, the threat, just the threat, will be enough for her to roll over.

right2bright on December 11, 2008 at 10:20 AM

Could be. Maybe. But if she was personally not connected to any illegal actions the threat could be an unproductive one. Can her knowledge alone be conclusively established as a crime?

I assume Blago et al will have the best lawyers dirty money can buy. Plus there are Fiztgerald’s political ambitions to consider – would he want to risk his chance at Illinois’ governorship on the prosecution of Blago’s wife? I have doubts that this will be pursued.

Advisor B? Rahm, maybe? Axelrod?

Wethal on December 11, 2008 at 9:58 AM

I wouldn’t be surprised if Advisor B was Axelrod. He was an advisor to Blagojevich before he signed on with Obama. The question would be, would Obama have to accept responsibility and blame for what Axelrod might have done?

Fitz is wise to not name these people (other than Blagojevich) in the complaint, so they don’t start running for cover too early. If any of them are Obama people, they might start getting suspicious of each other and ratting on each other, and things could get ugly for the Anointed One.

I heard on the Michael Savage show last night that Fitzgerald has 300 hours of wiretap recordings, only 3 minutes of which have been made public. There may be other shoes dropping shortly if there are other gems buried in all that tape. Although, if Fitz worked 24/7, it would take him 15 days to listen to it all. Since he only has 40 days before Obama fires him, Fitz needs a lot of reliable transcribers working overtime right now!

Patti Blago worked extremely closely with Rezko for eight years–2001-2008. In fact, some reports call them “partners” though she in fact owned her own real estate business, River Realty, out of her home. The Rezko deals netted her in the $700,000 range. After he went to jail, her business dried up (in September, though I’m not sure if that’s this September or last). One of the properties that Rezko handled was the Obama property.

In April 2005, a man by the name of Auchi, an Iraqi who had become rich from Sadam and then moved to Britain, wanted to come to the US, but he couldn’t get a visa. He asked his good friend Rezko to see what he could do. Rezko hinted that he had connections with a senator and would look into it.

Later in April 2005, Auchi gave Rezko a loan for 3.5 million. June 15, 2005, the Obamas bought their home for 1.65 million which was coupled with an adjacent piece of land that Mrs. Rezko bought. The two together were in the neighborhood of 2.2 million.

It seems quite possible that Patti B was the agent who handled this deal as Rezko and her were “partners,” Rezko worked for her husband, and so did Obama (and Emanuel) for a time.

I don’t think that’s right. I read yesterday where Axelrod turned down and offer from Blago’s campaign two? yrs. ago b/c he said, he wasn’t sure that Blago was ready to govern. Obama and Emmanuel both served as advisors to Blago’s campaign however. I think it is Emmanuel.

Probably right. Obama isn’t president yet, so he isn’t as strong as he will be. Blogo’s deal will likely be the camels nose under the tent because the public and the press is facinated with blatant corruption. Obama will get dirt on him, but likely not enough to bring him down.

nolapol on December 11, 2008 at 10:58 AM

As for the newspapers and news business, I think it’s clear to all now that they are NOT in this for America. If anything, they are in it for themselves and maybe even know what’s coming. I remember the night of the third debate. I turned on FOX NEWS to hear the commentary. Not one, NOT ONE said McCain had even done a fair to middling job. They ALL said he lost outright–when it was clear it was his best performance in the debates. I remember Fred Barnes clearly. I’ve learned to read certain people’s body language that I’ve watched often. Fred had his arms crossed, his face puffed out, and he was puffing like a dragon. I remember thinking, “Someone is making him say this, and he’s not happy about it.”

If it were not for the Internet, we would know none of this… trust me. They just said of the Big Three news channels last night, only one suggested BO had any involvement with Blago beyond that he said he had no contact. The other two (while mentioning in passing that Blago is a dem) only quoted the denial. Nothing was said about Alexrod misspeaking, etc.

They know. They are covering because they know the gov will come down hard on them if they don’t.

UnderstandingisPower on December 11, 2008 at 11:00 AM

A rational person would agree that the liklihood of Obama being unsullied by his 10 year association with Rezko is a fairy tale but remeber Obama was able to make his acolytes believe that he NEVER heard Rev Wright spew his racist hatred in spite of sitting in the pews for 20 years.

I have little doubt that somehow he’s going to be able to express great regret that the IL governor has been shown to be a crook of the first order – he will tell the American people that of course he had not part in any of this and he is as disappointed as we are that it “appears” that Chicago politics is not lily pure.

It will be dismissed as just a distraction being orchastrated by the right wing conspiracy to deflect blame from all the evils done by Pres Bush and Karl Rove. Or baring that we will be told again how stupid Sarah Palin was.

“Although not as coveted as Marriott Rewards points or United Airlines frequent flier miles, the campaign of Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama is trying to establish its own loyalty program with “My Points.”

Started several weeks ago, the initiative is designed to reward those who take actions that help the campaign, such as hosting an event for supporters or making calls from home as part of a do-it-yourself phone bank program.

For now, however, there is no reward routinely offered, even as thousands of online supporters rack up points.

“There is no pot at the end of the rainbow,” said Chris Hughes, a co-founder of the hot social networking site Facebook and the campaign’s online organizer. “We probably will at some point run a special initiative…where they get to have some type of reward.”

The points system is primarily meant as a way for supporters to measure in a daily way the impact they are having on the campaign for the Illinois Democrat.

A few of the ways supporters can earn points: march in a parade (25), sign a supporter card or convince another voter to do so (50), or help with a phone bank (50 points).”

Everything that comes out of the Idiot’s mouth is a lie, so if he denies something, you know the truth is the opposite.

Now, since he is slicker than Willy, he always parses the words so that you can interpret them umpteen ways, so he will never be caught in a crystal clear direct lie.

But since he has lied about his entire life story, and since he lied about every one of his campaign stances twice (first when he was misrepresenting himself ti the moonbats, and second when he was misrepresenting himself to the “saner” wing of the Dems), we know absolutely that whatever he says is a lie.

He’s a U.S. Attorney, and if he’s fired he looks for another law job (probably as a prosecutor with his history, though he could do defense), writes a book, or runs for office.

His successor takes over the case, and decides what to do next- in this case, probably tie up any loose ends that are in public view, but trying not to open any cracked doors that may lead “upstairs,” if you see what I mean.

Doing the citizen reporting the media isn’t. Thanks.

This is what I’m talking about, and it’s still going on. They are now hosting “Pray for Obama” and “Change is Coming” parties. What is this?

UnderstandingisPower on December 11, 2008 at 11:04 AM

Indoctrination. This is how it begins. I grew up in a system where the children had to wear red cravats around their necks, mark for the cause, etc.

Be very vigilant.

Entelechy on December 11, 2008 at 11:17 AM

If it ever comes to this – which is doubtful – he should choose Sarah Palin and bring this country together once and for all.

cs89 on December 11, 2008 at 11:18 AM

If Biden becomes President, the Speaker does not become Vice President. Artilce 2 of the 25th Amendment says the President shall nominate a new Vice President who shall be confirmed by a majority of both houses of Congress. More like Vice President Hillary.

flyoverland on December 11, 2008 at 10:07 AM

In which case, one could expect Biden’s anuerisms to suddenly get a lot worse.

Woaa! Now that’s a great start to a Tom Clancy novel.

nolapol on December 11, 2008 at 11:18 AM

Let’s see, if I get this right,
P = (O + 300000) + (R – 300000)

and there’s O – 120000 = R + 120000

Seems that at least 180,000 units flowed between R and O.

Now, all that remains is to figure out what P is in reality, not symbolically.

UnderstandingisPower on December 11, 2008 at 11:23 AM

Fitz already cleared Obama on Rezkogate.

Birthergate is over and Blagogate shows the President is clean.

Hell, his chief of staff snitched Blago out.

Now that is change.

getalife on December 11, 2008 at 11:23 AM

And who exactly is going to hold Obama accountable on anything? The press? The DNC? Justice department? His supporters?
Good luck with that.

In all seriousness – if he chose Palin it would heal this country. And I think Biden and Palin could work well together in that respect.

AprilOrit on December 11, 2008 at 11:30 AM

Wait. I’m a bit confused. When people on the right are wondering about Obama’s Constitutional qualifications to be president, vis a vis “natural born” and his refusal to release a birth certificate, we are called wackos and to go away.

When there is no evidence that Obama is dirty, just an inference because of his long time association with Rezco, oh, well, yes, we must look in to that.

UnderstandingisPower on December 11, 2008 at 11:23 AM

Maybe we’ll stop it. However, for now, we deserve to be farked royal, first. We asked for this, and, thus, we deserve it fully. Blame mostly the right who voted for him, stayed home, or voted for Barr, or their goat, ‘independents’ and formerly thinking Democrats. You can never blame the leftie plankton banks. They deserve to be exploited by something like this.

Whatever you do, don’t blame the French for this. Lay the blame squarely where it belongs, no matter how hard it will be, or how much we’ll have to pay/suffer.

Serious question: have all the Ron Paulnuts taken on the “Birther” mantle now?

I’m starting to think that the original copy of Obama’s birth certificate is somehow tied to a Gold Standard revival, or the abolition of the Federal Reserve or something. Will we be treated to the sight of a Birther Blimp anytime soon?

Gilda on December 11, 2008 at 11:39 AM

I’m curious about the Obama parties going on. Did you know that they get “points” for hosting a party and “points” for attending? Can someone please give more details and explain why they are doing this and what it means?

UnderstandingisPower on December 11, 2008 at 10:53 AM

These parties are supposed to be opportunities for participants to share their health-insurance horror stories to be posted and shared with Camp Obama as “evidence” for the “critical need” to do something about this urgent national disaster. Why, they even have voter response/feedback to demonstrate how much this topic is at the forefront of the American people.

Back on topic: I understand (from Volkh (sp?) Conspriracies blog source commentaries that Patti Blago was the realtor who arranged the Obama home purchase with Rezko’s help.

The same comment-section source claims that Rezko has stopped singing since the Blago arrest. (Does anyone have facts to support this claim? And what could it mean?)

getalife: Fitz already cleared Obama on Rezkogate.

Birthergate is over and Blagogate shows the President is clean

Not quite. Re-read the exact words that Fitz repeated when pressed by reporters.
