Rezko’s singing, Blago investigation shows; Update: Feds asking about Obama-Rezko land deal

How much larger will the scandal surrounding Rod Blagojevich grow?  According to a footnote in the affadavit filed by US Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald, the sky could be the limit.  Convicted political fixer Tony Rezko has been singing to investigators, and his connections reach all the way to the White House:

A footnote to the 76-page criminal complaint and affidavit charging Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich (D) with soliciting bribes confirms what has long been rumored — that a former longtime friend and fundraiser for President-elect Barack Obama is talking to federal prosecutors in hopes of a reduced sentence.

Antoin “Tony” Rezko’s offer to provide authorities with evidence of others’ wrongdoing is “not complete,” and prosecutors are working to corroborate the claims he has made so far, the footnote said.

Rezko, a 53-year-old developer, was convicted in June of 16 criminal counts, including fraud, money laundering and abetting bribery. He is in custody awaiting sentencing.

Prosecutors depicted Rezko at trial as a fixer for Blagojevich and the man to see to secure a high-level appointment with the governor’s administration. Rezko had been a longtime fundraiser for Blagojevich and other Illinois politicians, including Obama.

The Washington Post spends the next six paragraphs stating and analyzing Fitzgerald’s statement from Tuesday that nothing in the affadavit has anything to do with Barack Obama.  They coo over how “unusual” it is for prosecutors to issue those kinds of statements, but that ignores the context of Fitzgerald’s statement.  Reporters peppered him with questions about Obama and his potential connections to the scandal, and Fitzgerald told them to read the affadavit, because everything he had was in there.

Obviously, this is an ongoing investigation, and Fitzgerald will go where the evidence leads.  Thus far, it has led to Blagojevich, although it seems unlikely that Rezko has any connection to the Illinois governor’s attempts to sell Obama’s Senate seat; that had to come from another source.  Rezko will have plenty of information on other potential instances of corruption involving Illinois politics, and everyone with whom Rezko worked could be implicated.

Obama and Rezko worked together for more than ten years in Illinois politics.  If Rezko was as dirty as a jury verdict states and as federal prosecutors believe, how likely is it that anyone employing him was squeaky clean?  Their political association lasted over ten years, during the period when Rezko was corrupting state politics.  It’s certainly possible that Rezko’s corruption didn’t involve Obama, but to assume it didn’t seems far too credulous by half, especially with the present example of Illinois politics before us now.

If Rezko’s singing, many politicians are sweating.  Obama may be one of them.  Let’s see what happens before being dismissive of the possibility.

Update: Mickey Kaus puts together this article with a Washington Times story from Election Day (via Jim Geraghty):

A former Illinois real estate specialist says FBI agents have questioned him about a Chicago property that had been bought by convicted felon Tony Rezko’s wife and later sold to the couple’s next-door neighbor, Sen. Barack Obama.

The real estate specialist, Kenneth J. Conner, said bank officials replaced an appraisal review he prepared on the property and FBI agents were investigating in late 2007 whether the Rezko-Obama deal was proper.

“Agents and I talked about payoff, bribe, kickback for a long time, though it took them only a short number of minutes of talking with me while looking at the appraisal to acknowledge what they already seemed to know: The Rezko lot was grossly overvalued,” Mr. Conner told The Washington Times Monday.

“Rezko paid the asking price on the same day Obama paid $300,000 less than the asking price to the same seller for his adjacent mansion,” he said. “This begs the question of payoff, bribe, kickback.”

Rezko’s singing.  The only thing we don’t know is the extent of the tune — and this at least suggests that has several verses.

Once Obama fires all US Attorneys on January 20th about 15 seconds after inauguration, will this investigation have to start over? This is how he may be able to get out from under this kind of stuff one thinks?

Rezko won’t say a thing about the man who can replace the U.S. Attorneys involved with ‘less aggressive’ types and even give him a pardon for his federal crimes. He’ll sing about everyone but Obama.

Meanwhile page one of NYT:
Sarah Palin, the REPUBLICAN VP candidate, was caught in a photo coming out of a non-Vietnamese nail salon…is she a REPUBLICAN racist?
Teams of reporters are flying into Alaska to uncover this apparent REPUBLICAN racist tactic. We will have 30 reporters on the ground covering this almost unbelievable action by the former VP REPUBLICAN candidate…if the REPUBLICANS are behind this racist, and bigoted action we will find out.
“Her racism is as white as the snow that surrounds her, no wonder she moved to Alaska” an anonymous person on the state capital steps reported.
“The REPUBLICANS will be held responsible”, the 30 reporters shouted out in unison…

Obama is gonna be like Clinton. Where everyone around them is getting sent to jail, or copping a plea, he will remain untouched. He will say he had no idea what was going on, and the MSM will carry his water. It amazes me these politicians tell us to vote for them cause they will clean up government, and they are so smart, yet then as soon as people around them start falling like domino’s, “I had no idea”, then they all have the IQ of celery.

It’s too late. It’s too public. Clinton was able to do it because the investigation into his crooked dealings was was not really public and in the early stages.

Fitz knows this. I expect he is working as fast as he can to get investigations finished and charges publicly filed. I’m still hoping for an ACORN RICO indictment.

I tend to agree, but it is getting complicated…
Blankface is in the picture, and they have tapes. If Rezko gets too “cute” with facts, he may set himself up as not telling the complete truth.
Also, they have Blankface’s wife on tap, she ain’t going to go to jail for Blankface or Rezko…the wife always buckles, or the husband out of duty and honor rolls over to keep her out.

The interesting aspect of this for me is what will Hillary do? I’ve been assuming that she would replace the loose cannon Biden in 2012. Obama didn’t want to share the spotlight with her in 2008, but he had his historic moment, so 2012 would be acceptable (if she and Bubba have behaved themselves).

Imagine the irony of a Clinton not wanting to be assoociated with someone who might be accused of corruption.

Wethal on December 11, 2008 at 9:25 AM

Its all about the Land deal…

Obama was NOT a Kingmaker in Chicago politics, he was the one made King…

So, unless they got a smoking quid pro quo gun… on him giving a favor… on Tape, with winesses, signed affidavits, with the Devil HIMSELF (not Blago, the guy with Horns)…. he’ll skate on this…

But the land deal could be different… its harder to hide numbers… and that is not a politicial deal, but a financial one.

As the vice tightens on Obama, the leftist media including the Washington Post will intensify their efforts to distract, obfuscate and discredit any allegations that lead directly to Obama. It won’t work and the only outcome will be a further decline in the credibility of the mainstream media. This has only begun so hold on tight.

This new post-partisan era seems strangely familiar. Let’s wait and see what Obama wants us to think about this.

Maybe what prosecutors are calling “corruption” is really a necessary response to the current economic crisis. I’m sure whatever is done, will be in our best interests. It’s just a Change in the politics as usual atmosphere.

I have Hope that more politicans will pitch in to grease the wheels of commerece and take advantage of this crisis.

Also, they have Blankface’s wife on tap, she ain’t going to go to jail for Blankface or Rezko

Blankface’s wife is the daughter of a powerful Chicago Alerman, Dick Mell, who knows plenty too. I don’t think he will let his daughter take any fall.

In a very personal perspective on the problems facing Governor Rod Blagojevich and his wife, Chicago Alderman Dick Mell, father of Patti Blagojevich, spoke with CBS 2’s Dorothy Tucker Wednesday about a very challenging time for the family.

“Right now my main concern is her and the grandchildren,” Mell said.

From his front porch, a somber Dick Mell spoke briefly about his daughter Patti. It’s clear he’s giving her his full support despite their stormy past.

The relationship between the alderman and his daughter became strained in November 2005. Mell got angry when his son-in-law closed down a landfill that belonged to one of Mell’s relatives. Back then, Patti sided with her husband.

Romeo13 on December 11, 2008 at 9:25 AM

The obamansion land deal alone should be enough to put obie out of the oval office and should put him behind bars.

As you said, financial transactions are hard to hide. I Also heard that the appraiser blew the whistle on the property valuations and was fired for it. I’m going on memory but I think he has a lawsuit pending naming barryo as either a defendant or witness.

When you look at that land deal,(1) Something of value of over a half mill was given to obie (2) A little while later, obie did some favors for tony. So the numbers p.us tony singing should be enough to nail it down assuming you can find a dozen honest jurors.

The big questions are (1) the health of the witnesses (2) the possible firing of fitz.

I would think that if there is evidence, Fitz would want to move things along as quickly as possible. There will be a lot of grand jurors with screwed up christmas schedules.

On top of that is the possibility that there is something on tape with obie or his staff discussing the purchase of a nice shiny senate seat.

the big story in the Blagojevich scandal is the role of intermediaries. Throughout the criminal complaint filed against Blagojevich, there are references to unnamed individuals who play important roles in the scandal — and who know a lot about what went on and who was involved. None of those intermediaries is more intriguing than the person referred to as “Advisor B.”

If you read the complaint, Advisor B, who is said to be based in Washington, is in the middle of just about everything. He — the complaint refers to Advisor B as “he” — is on the phone when Blagojevich discusses a variety of options, all of them corrupt, through which Blagojevich might profit from filling the Senate seat. The complaint says Advisor B was partial to the “three way option” involving the Service Employees International Union and its group Change to Win because such a deal would involve fewer Obama “fingerprints” than some of the other options being discussed.

The key question in all of this is whether all the discussions were between people in the Blagojevich camp or whether any of them reached outside the Blagojevich circle to people in the Obama camp. Advisor B might well know the answer.

HT: NRO

Advisor B? Rahm, maybe? Axelrod?

Gee, I think Eric Holder is going to decide he needs to “spend more time with his family and reluctantly withdraw from the AG spot.” And hey, that tough on crime Patrick Fitzgerald guy will do nicely. Thus any investigation stops with Rezko and Blago. Now if only this Republican rightwing MSM will stop distracting Dear Leader from the important issues of the day, such as bailing out the auto industry and global cooling, er natural cycle warming & cooling, ah warming and such.

BTW, the MSM needs to focus on how much the Republicans spent on Sarah Palin, and how much a drain on society Trig is going to be, and the poor mooses she’s killed and she talks funny.

Obama will fix this by firing, or getting someone to fire, Patrick Fitzgerald.
Anyone wanna bet?

No, Fitz has insulated himself by prosecuting Libby as well as Blago. Nonpartisan crime fighter. Fitz has job security.

Only thing Obama could do would be to promote Fitz to some useless administrative job in DC which Fitz could plausibly turn down.

Question: Didn’t Spiro T. Agnew get booted out of the VP office because of similar shenannigans while he was governor of Maryland?

Astroturfers are really grasping now. Lame. Maybe Axelrod will be next under the Barry bus.

If Biden becomes President, the Speaker does not become Vice President. Artilce 2 of the 25th Amendment says the President shall nominate a new Vice President who shall be confirmed by a majority of both houses of Congress. More like Vice President Hillary.

Eric Holder will be given this task on day one.

thomasaur on December 11, 2008 at 10:08 AM

If there is any thread of the investigation pointing to Obama, what they will try to do to Fitz will make what they did to Palin look like a picnic. The MSM is just too invested in Obama to do otherwise.

MikeA on December 11, 2008 at 9:51 AM

No doubt about it. Remember how well Ken Starr was treated? That will seem like a Dean Martin celebrity roast in comparison to what Fitz would be looking at.

Mr. D on December 11, 2008 at 9:57 AM

Maybe one of the fifth column er fourth estate will start smelling a pulitzer and start doing a little real investigative journalism.. Ooops, gotta go, I think there is a unicorn in my backyard…

My thought is that the holidays would be the best time for fitz to bring obama in under indictment or arrest. maybe right after new years. Things are cold and people do not come out to riot in a foot of snow and zero degrees in the same numbers as they would during the summer. Let the excrement impact the rotary air movement device as a new years present to the republic.

If he has anything on obie, I think it has to happen prior to inauguration. As I mentioned earlier Obie does look worried in some of the pics.. sort of like he’s trying to crap a concrete basketball. Hell, the halo is even missing from pictures of him.

If some some reason Obama is implicated, indicted or otherwise removed or prevented from taking office, I’m worried that all our college age kids will be up in arms in the streets like the Greek youths, facing down the Man with violence…
Oh wait, that would take them away from their videogames, watching MTV and dining out on mom and dad…
Never mind…
Take him out!

right2bright on December 11, 2008 at 9:59 AM

A commentator on FoxNews last night (sorry, don’t remember who) made the point that “wishing” for something isn’t illegal, nor is expressing those wishes. It’s the behavior that’s criminal and I don’t know if they’ve got enough on the wife for any kind of charges.

We’ll see. Looks like there are a lot of bigger fish to fry anyway.

Questions..

1. Suppose that fitz indicts or arrests obama prior to inauguration. Is there anything in the constitution that would prevent him from taking office (Short of isolating him and preventing the oath from being administered)

2. If Obama is prevented from taking the oath, what happens then??? I would think that the electoral college would have already certified him and could not go back and certify Mccain. I would also think that there is no way Bush could stay past the 20th. So, What happens then?? Would Biden become Prez if the oath was not administered?? If not, who would take over at that point?

Thanks 52 percenters.. Fine mess you’ve got us into here…

You missed my point, it is the threat that brings out the truth.
She had intimate knowledge, by her interruptions and rants over the phone,
That implicates her, the threat, just the threat, will be enough for her to roll over.
All the FBI needs is “some” information. Enough to know when someone is telling the truth, or lying. You can’t get a deal if you lie.
Like, if they say to her…”Just tell us if they ever met outside of the office”, and she says “yes, they went to the ABC restaurant to talk, and my husband came back upset”…that statement would be invaluable to determine how truthful two other people are.
That is why often the most important witnesses, are not the ones directly involved…

Fitz will be presented as the prosecutor who always goes after the innocent man instead of the actual criminal, because of a political agenda.

BHO: Whoa! Dodged that bullet. Hold on, here comes another one! Dodged that one too. Holy crap! INCOMING!

For some levity: Did you hear about the gay Irishmen who seemed to be made for each other? Patrick Fitzgerald and Gerald Fitzpatrick. Okay, you can boo me now.

DuctTapeMyBrain on December 11, 2008 at 10:23 AM

It won’t happen, because so far Obama is clean…but what a story if the first black president was denied the office because of mis-conduct…I mean the implications, I can’t imagine.
Not to throw any fuel on the fire, but why did Rahm rent a white Bronco and park it outside Obama’s house?

right2bright on December 11, 2008 at 10:25 AM

This will be quite interesting as it continues to unfold.

Maybe Obama will pardon Rezko and Blago.

molonlabe28 on December 11, 2008 at 10:25 AM

It seems likely that Rezko gave the Feds some info on Blago that they were able to corroborate and use as a basis for obtaining wire tap warrants to electoinically survail the Gov. Those wire taps uncovered the ‘Senate Seat for Sale” scam.

I wonder how much more Rezko can give them..he’d like to avoid jail time but my guess is he hasn’t done enough for the prosecuter…yet.

Once Obama fires all US Attorneys on January 20th about 15 seconds after inauguration, will this investigation have to start over? This is how he may be able to get out from under this kind of stuff one thinks?

ReaganConservative3 on December 11, 2008 at 9:17 AM

And what if he doesn’t fire the attorneys come January – what will you all do? He has already stated that Fitzgerald is staying….

More dissappointment like the birth certificate let-down?

Don’t build yourself up too high, you may find you are setting yourself up for dissappointment. We watched The Left do this over Karl Rove getting arrested, which never came to fuition. Which made that Bush derangement syndrome they are infected with – beyond viral.
