Does this mean the Gen. Powell is running for the RNC chairmanship? Just wondering.
Cindy Munford on December 11, 2008 at 7:51 PM
Asking a sitting Governor if she reads newspapers & magazines is like asking Tiger Woods, “So, do you read sports publications?” Palin was merely shocked at the stupidity of the question as was I, but Palin didn’t try to hide the awkward question with psychobable. (Obama)

Who is this Colin Powell you speak of? Isn’t he an Obama supporter? Why would anyone care what he thinks about Sarah Palin or anything else?
BiasedGirl on December 11, 2008 at 7:53 PM
Big wusS is afraid of Sarah Palin because even though she’s all woman, she’s still more man than he could ever hope to be.

“Senator Obama”? SENATOR Obama?? What heresy, Colin!!
Didn’t you get the memo???
The title shall be “President-elect Obama”!!!
fred5678 on December 11, 2008 at 7:53 PM
That’s one of the things I like about Palin – she doesn’t seem to feel the need to tear other people down to make herself seem bigger by comparison. Yeah, she’ll tell the truth about her opponents’ records, but she does it with humor and a smile. Look how she said good things about Hillary Clinton on more than one occasion, even though they obviously disagree on policies. She’s even said nice things about Obama.
Her positive and optimistic approach is one of her best assets. She doesn’t feel the need to demonize her opponent, she just goes after them on the facts.

What party is Powell speaking for ?
joey24007 on December 11, 2008 at 7:54 PM
In my experience, liberal men are extremely threatened by strong conservative women.
The fact that their female fellow travelers will nod approvingly when they throw chauvinistic epithets at someone like Sarah Palin only emboldens them. After all, they finally get to express what they have to work so hard to repress around women of their own ideological ilk.
TheUnrepentantGeek on December 11, 2008 at 7:55 PM
Palin’s values and her positivity is what makes her a the future of our Party, while Powell’s wishy washy soft-R republicanism is hopefully a Thing of the past.
BiasedGirl on December 11, 2008 at 7:57 PM
Yes, yes. “Sarah r dumb cuz’ her interview not so gud.”
How could we ever doubt the honesty of your narrative or the depth of your analysis?
TheUnrepentantGeek on December 11, 2008 at 7:57 PM
Doubt it. Powell probably hasn’t handled a weapon in years, and Palin already shoots dead center with military firearms.
Jim62sch on December 11, 2008 at 7:57 PM
Small town values? Let’s see, here’s a short list:
work hard,
take care of your family,
be honest,
be a part of a community that supports each other in crisis,
attend church or respect others right to attend,
do not expect handouts from the government,
love your country, and
support the military
Yeah, real polarizing. /sarc
Mallard T. Drake on December 11, 2008 at 7:57 PM
Why didn’t Powell single out Huckabee? he also talks about small town values. Maybe because he’s not a threat to undermine Obama. No man ever becomes a military general without being cagey and without having a definite mission to accomplish-that is to cut Sarah off a the knees and thus take her out early in the game. Picture in your mind that Sarah is either running a gauntlet or in the middle of a dodge ball configuration where she, as the moving target, is trying to dodge the ball-and picture that going on 24/7, every day, every week for the next 4 years. That is what the MSM, Democratic operatives and some Republican moderates like Powell are prepared to do to take Sarah out. My friend, never doubt that for even a second.
technopeasant on December 11, 2008 at 7:58 PM
Powell is not a Republican, so I can care less what he thinks about politics.
WisCon on December 11, 2008 at 7:58 PM
How else are we supposed to judge our public figures’ intellectual abilities? At least we know she can read – she could handle a teleprompter – but as far as coming up with coherent answers to easy questions without prepping for them beforehand, she’s woefully inadequate.
Big S on December 11, 2008 at 7:59 PM
They know better. That’s why they have to come here and proclaim it. No use in arguing.
Come to think of it, “dim-witted Obama voters” should be an ethnic group. We have data to support it.

ddrintn on December 11, 2008 at 8:03 PM
How about by their accomplishments, for one.
You are confusing media skills with intelligence. Palin has media skills but perhaps not as polished as someone who has been on the big stage for several years. That doesn’t mean she is dumb.
Mallard T. Drake on December 11, 2008 at 8:03 PM
I could only take about 30 seconds of this
I believe it is polarizing to the party when one uses race as a determinant for the endorsement of a candidate.
gonnjos on December 11, 2008 at 8:04 PM
He was the face of “sober moderation” when it came to going to war. After all the Powell Doctrine was very clear about making sure you go in for a clear purpose and have a clear exit strategy — “no more Vietnams”, as the saying goes. His speech before the world convinced everyone that we must have lots and lots of evidence to invade Iraq because Powell is no needless war hawk. He led us all to believe it was a rock solid deal.
The bastard was totally wrong. The fact that he can show his face anywhere is shameful. Like I said, if he had any self-respect he’d withdraw himself to a monastery — preferably a Chaldean Catholic monastery in Iraq since there are very few Iraqi Christians left now — so many of them have been murdered or forced to flee their country in the wake of all the sectarian violence in post-Saddam Iraq.
If he didn’t believe the intelligence was adequate at the time, which is what he now claims, then he was morally obligated to say so before we invaded. I am sick and tired of these people who conveniently now tell us that they had doubts but didn’t speak up at the time. Did they not realize that war is a serious life and death matter?
And so many of these same thoughtless bastards are here telling us what a fool Sarah Palin is. The people that got us into wars and bankrupted our country are the same people denouncing Sarah Palin. Why should I listen to a word these idiots tell me?
ramrocks on December 11, 2008 at 8:04 PM
Big S; be intellectually honest: the 2008 election is over-your guy won. In 4 years Sarah will be a better and more polished candidate. if you deny that then you probably thought that after Tiger Woods won his first major in 1997 that he would never win another major ever, that he would never improve with time and age and experience, that he would never cultivate his talents to a higher degree and seek the guidance of counsellors who could nurture him and help him to improve his game. Do you really think that Sarah is going to sit still and not get better? if you do then quite frankly, you are an idiot!

General Anesthesia.

fogw on December 11, 2008 at 8:08 PM
Gen. Powell has launched a Preemptive Strike on behalf of Barry and those that want to make the Republican Party the clone of the Democratic Party. Sarah has a great big target on her back because of her popularity. The Beltway and Left Coast Elitists simply can not stand the fact of her popularity and are trying to take her out by whatever means necessary. If she was inept and inconsequential, she would not be receiving so much attention from those trying to bring her down.
kingsjester on December 11, 2008 at 8:09 PM
In answer to your question:
A) Their track record
B) The success or failure of their ideas
C) The efficacy of their implementation of their ideas
D) Their perception of success by stakeholders in past endeavors
E) Their perception of success by coworkers in past endeavors
F) Their past accomplishments in terms of actual effect produced
You know … stuff that actually matters in the real world and bears some semblance of predictive validity. Need I go on?
The interviews mean next to nothing, especially when considered in a vacuum. But if you really insist on making voting decisions based on the endless gaffe reel that the 24 hour news cycle produces, at least don’t pretend it’s anything more elevated than someone who votes based on SNL; it’s not. Shallow analysis, sloppy thinking, dishonest narrative.
TheUnrepentantGeek on December 11, 2008 at 8:10 PM
I actually think the opposite. I don’t think she media skills (especially in interviews) thus making her look less intelligent.
terryannonline on December 11, 2008 at 8:11 PM
Her support seems to be along the lines of “Well, now that were in there, we better win.” Here’s a quote from an interview shortly after she was elected Governor:

Now that the American people are getting a ringside view of Obama’s minions, buddies, and political allies rushing to cut favorable deals with federal prosecutors, I’m wondering if some of them might be thinking “Hmmm, and we had an actual corruption-fighter on the ticket” and maybe starting to feel the pangs of buyer’s remorse.
It’ll only get worse. With the new administration consisting almost entirely of Chicago Corruptocrats and Clinton Apparatchiks, the leaks and scandals will flow like fine wine.

And by the way, it was no secret in washington who joe wilson was married to and what she did for a living. They were fullblown clintonistas. matt cooper, one of the reporters her name was supposedly leaked to, is married to mandy grumwald, he probably socialized with wilson and plame before all that bs.

Now, go home and do the honorable thing.
Don Carne on December 11, 2008 at 8:32 PM
I supported the war in Iraq! So did almost every serious well informed person in 2003 because we believed the words of people like Colin Powell and Tony Blair and George W. Bush who told us that we had clear and solid intelligence showing an imminent threat. It turns out the intelligence was crappy and Powell and his staff now tell us that they suspected as much but didn’t say anything at the time.
Someday we’ll get to the bottom of all the various reasons for why we went into Iraq. There wasn’t just one reason. There were many, but the one reason that they used to sell the public on it was the WMD, and they were totally wrong about that, and they knew that it wasn’t solid enough evidence to invade Iraq, but they went with it anyway.
Now that we are there, we must leave with honor and make sure that we don’t have to go back there ever again. I agree with Palin on that, as I agreed with McCain on that.
I’m sure Palin supported the war just like I did and just like many others did. We weren’t the decision makers. We were just Americans who believed what our leaders were telling us and supported our troops.
ramrocks on December 11, 2008 at 8:33 PM
I totally get that Powell wanted Obama to win because he was black. After everything that black people went through in our history, it has to be awesome for them to see one of their own as the most powerful man in the world.
It’s just dishonest of him to come up with these B.S. excuses. Dude, nobody will blame you if you say that you voted for him because he was black. I have voted for candidates for dumber reasons.
I think it’s because of his military career. The military culture is ruthless about racism – zero tolerance. After you’ve been in uniform for a few years, you internalize that and it’s basically unthinkable to treat someone differently because of their race. So probably some cognitive dissonance there.
Jim62sch on December 11, 2008 at 8:33 PM
Thank God, that the USA is winning the war in iraq. At least the GOP will have that to hang their hat on in the future.
technopeasant on December 11, 2008 at 8:35 PM
You are right we weren’t the decision makers. Although, I would argue: How likely would have the chances of going to war in Iraq been if the American people didn’t support it? I would say about a zero percent chance.
Also, I think I used the wrong tense. She still supports the Iraq war (the majority of Americans do not anymore). She doesn’t seem to have the perspective as you do.

Well, she was McCain’s running mate and Mac shtick was that he was one of the main architects of the surge. So she had to stay on that point, regardless.
Her points in her energy policy speeches seem to be that foreign oil dependence is a major reason for our involvement there, and becoming energy-independent will allow us to disengage somewhat from that region’s politics. Makes sense to me.
Also, her son is a G.I. fighting over there. She can’t undermine him by denigrating his mission.

macncheez on December 11, 2008 at 9:04 PM
The reality is that soft conservatives like Powell were hoping that after Obama had won the 2008 election it would throw the republican party into disarray and give them a chance to reorganize and remold the party into kinder, softer, gentler republican party that was more in line with their particular brand of wishy washy soft conservatism (Sort of like Democrat lite).
Unfortunately for them Sarah Palin arrived on the scene and reminded everyone what a real conservative looks like and laid waist to the notion that Republicrats like Powell have the answers to lead the party out of the political wilderness.
This is why they are so snarky about her and are doing everything in their power to diminish her public profile. Its just a bad case of sour grapes IMHO. Sarah Palin is here to stay and there is nothing they or the media can do about it other than throw temper tantrums and flap their gums. Besides the media slung so much obvious BS to get BHO elected President that I really don’t think people are paying much attention to their pontifications anymore.

Dear Mr. Powell,
Thank you for your service to our country. You aren’t considered a token to the left anymore. You are now a hero to the left. The Republican party and the leadership of the party never considered you a token. You were promoted and given responsibilities because of the person you were. I wonder where you would be had the dems been in charge during your career?
You chose Mr. Obama for all the experience and expertise that he could bring to the oval office. Compared to McCain. And we thought you were fooled on the yellow cake.
We all know the person you are now. And you aren’t welcome in my Republican party. Good riddance.

Powell is incapable of sitting down for an interview without turning it into a free-for-all against white conservatives.
When he says “small town values” he means “white Christians.”
It’s all about race with him. He just tries to cover it with his careful measured tones, oh so intellectual, but really just the same old liberal pablum. Plus a few shots at Palin for good measure.
Very becoming, General.
