Well, the responses from HA readers are probably what AP expected.

I’ll also say that Powell had little creds coming into the fall and he lost what was left when he endorsed Obama.

He has no business presuming to speak one word to or for any Republicans.

I’ll start the bidding at 35 on that one.

General Powell;

When you chose to endorse a Marxist hack for president, you no longer had anything to say to conservatives. Your endorsement of The One truly showed your colors. Your statements regarding Gov. Palin have no more interest to me than would pronouncements from “How weird” Dean, George Sore-ass, AlGore, or any other cesspool dwelling scum. Please run along to the DNC headquarters and practice your Monica Lewinsky impersonation on anyone you find.

That’s where you TRULY belong.

oldleprechaun on December 11, 2008 at 7:06 PM

This guy is a closeted socialist and he finally came out.

I can’t stand Powell, and thought he was a failure at high-level positions.

Now to insult Palin and Rush is the lowest of the low. No self-respecting REPUBLICAN likes this douche. Powell go the hell away.

A word to the RNC, never invite Powell for anything concerning republicans. You hear that Steele?! The tent is not big enough for RINOs.

Powell just thinks he is better than the rest of the people in America.

Obama needs to change the subject, Powell is trying to help the communist out.

Keep it up. Run with Palin and chase the moderate and Wall Street Republicans out of the party. You know, the ones who disagreed with Cheney over the wisdom of running up massive budget deficits. The ones who know how to run the economy.

True, you never really liked those intellectual types in the first place. But break up the coalition, and the far right won’t see power again.

bayam on December 11, 2008 at 6:57 PM

Dude,

It’s the moderates and Wall Street types with Washington that are screwing the ecomony including the Mods in the GOP. Palin is a fiscal conservative unlike the moderates in the party who are for bailouts here, bailouts there.

The fact that Sarah is well-liked by socons does not lessen her as a fiscal conservative and government reformer. She appeals to more interests of the GOP than any other politician at this time. What we are not sure of is her foreign policy views. I hope they are not neo-conservative if she takes them up.

What’s the point of a GOP thas is basically the same as the Dems? Better to just settle in for one-party rule.

The GOP must be the moderate to conservative alternative to the Dems. Sarah fills the need. She is inexperienced with national issues but give her time if she seeks national office.

I’ve read Buckley and other intellectuals of politics, philosophy and theology. And yet, I think Sarah has national potential as a leader, not some brainiac nerd.

Colin (I refuse to call you general after you threw your support to the Marxist Obama), why should the GOP ever listen to you again? You openly declared your loyalties; stay on your side of the fence where you belong. Sarah Palin is a patriot and a great American. For you to belittle and diminish her sir, is an act of a craven and scoundrel. As far as I am concerned you are no longer welcome in the GOP and should be considered an anathema and shunned accordingly. (By the way I do not believe in purging GOP members but in your case Colin it was self-inflicted.)

ninjapirate on December 11, 2008 at 7:13 PM

I have lost all respect for this man. He has zero credibility when it comes to anything now, let alone, lecturing Republicans on how to get our house in order. He made his bed with Barry Obama, now he needs to lie in it. It will be interesting to see how “consistent” Barry Obama seems after this corruption stink bomb continues to sully his Messiah image. In my opinion, any Republican that seeks Powell’s counsel in the future is an idiot.

The premise in the questions posed assumes that Powell is a Republican (which he is not). He is as much a Republican as Fareed Zakaria is an unbiased “journalist.”

Dim-witted? Really? And you garnered that information based on what, the Katie Couric Interview Newsmagazine Intelligence assessment?

I’m going to go out on a limb here and bet that maybe, just maybe, you’re not a trained psychometrician capable of creating and administering an objective measure of intelligence. I’ll farther postulate that your actual metric for intelligence ran more towards “doesn’t talk smart” and “doesn’t agree with me/appeal to me on a visceral level.”

So, unless you’ve got some objective proof of Sarah Palin’s intelligence, kindly retract your statement. Or reveal yourself to be yet one more person incapable of conceiving of someone who is not like them, yet is actually intelligent. Your call.

Romeo13 on December 11, 2008 at 7:16 PM

Since Obama’s stances are the very antithesis of what Powell says he believes in that leaves only one reason he endorsed Obama, because of his race. That makes him a racist and a racist has no business lecturing anyone, much less Republicans on anything.

Go pound sand Colin.

Is that Colon or Colin?……whatever…he is waste product.
I suggest we look at Bill Bennett’s “Book of Virtues” I am reading with my children. Do you know of a package better than Sarah Palin with these virtues: Self-Discipline, Compassion, Responsibility, Friendship, Work, Courage,Perseverance,Honesty, Loyalty and Faith? It’s hard to call her a politician, isn’t it?

gracie on December 11, 2008 at 7:17 PM

I was never a big fan of Powell, but when he endorsed The Obama™ he lost the last vestige of respect. Here’s a man who endorsed the least qualified person in the history of this country trying to tell Republicans what we need to be doing? I don’t think so.

Sorry Colin, take a hike.

(Is that the kind of reaction you expected there, Allah?)

johnsteele on December 11, 2008 at 7:17 PM

Talk about opportunists! What part of being a republican does he actually agree with?

GrayDog on December 11, 2008 at 7:17 PM

I’ll state the obvious since no one has yet. Small town values are the foundation of America…its roots. Those values are what made America what it is today, aside from a few that don’t get it and think that small town America is the problem.

Powell a Republican? HA! His actions and conduct most certainly do not reflect any conservative values I’m aware of. I would compare him to the buffoon Colbert…pretending to be a Conservative, just not at all funny. Oh wait. That’s not a distinction is it?

I’ve lived in Alaska all my life. I met Senator Stevens some 25 years ago when he chose to visit us nobodies in the kitchen working for caterers feeding his friends and family.

He brought us some of the expensive wine being served and shot the breeze with us before returning to his guests. (No, that’s not a basis to decide his guilt of innocence, but it shows the character of the man.)

I’ve seen first hand what he has done for Alaska. The majority of Alaskans feel that he was not given a fair trial, even those that did not vote for him, and that a new trial is in order. This man was in a position to make many millions if truly corrupt. The extent of his “corruption” was so sparse they had to make a big deal about the barbecue grill and a hot tub he supposedly got as bribes. Gimme a break.

If a friend brings his grill over and leaves it there because he hangs out there all the time, is that a bribe?

This man was screwed by a “friend”, and I still believe in his innocence. Let’s see another trial at which the prosecutors are not chastised for unethical behavior and withholding exculpatory evidence.

Now…I gotta split some wood for the woodstove or I’m gonna freeze my ass tonite.

Governor Palin was my Mayor in Wasilla, before she was my Governor. Powell knows the woman not at all or he’d keep his trap shut.

Army Brat on December 11, 2008 at 7:17 PM

“Small town values”? Didn’t Powell grow up in New York City? Or at least the NYC metro area? Like he would know what life in a small town is like, anyway?

Wethal on December 11, 2008 at 7:20 PM

Colin Powell has been a political opportunist since he left his post as Chair of the JCS. He simply wants to be on the winning side. His values are fluid.

A good question to ask is why his backing of Obama faded into obscurity within days, yet Sarah Palin is continuing to be talked about in all circles? It may be that one is values driven and one is not, and people sense and respect values.

BrideOfRove on December 11, 2008 at 7:23 PM

Ok, since no one else did it, I just looked up the census data to see if Powell’s assertion (that most of us do not live in small town America) is correct.

Here it is:

Source: U.S. Census Bureau, 2007 American Community Survey

Urban: 30.4%
Rural: 36.4%

So in addition to ignoring the relative square miles attributable to one versus the other (kinda’ odd for a general), he’s wrong about the population figures. Not that this guy seems to be overly-concerned with facts, but still…

You mean the heavily edited and slanted hackjob interviews? Seen any other interviews with her? How about the one with Canadian television from the other day? You really need to broaden the base of the news you read/watch.

The link I gave you to the “photographic memory” statement was an article written by a Democratic feminist who spent time with Palin. You’ve spent time with Sarah Palin and are able to refute this? Even Camille Paglia says she is smart. Hell, Colin Powell says that she’s smart in the interview linked above! But you know better?

Sarah Palin didn’t give a presentation to the UN swearing that Saddam Hussein had an advanced WMD program that presented an imminent threat to world peace. That was Colin Powell. The same Colin Powell who led the world to believe that the United States had rock solid intelligence confirming the existence of this advanced WMD program and that this intelligence necessitated the US to launch a preemptive invasion of Iraq.

Hundreds of thousands of lives and trillions of dollars later, we now know that he was wrong about that “imminent threat”.

So who the hell is this man to criticize Sarah Palin? Sarah Palin sent her first born son to fight in the war that this disgusting fool started.

If he had any self respect, he would withdraw to a monastery for the rest of his life and make daily penance.

Sonosam on December 11, 2008 at 7:26 PM

So when Sarah affirms ’small-town values’ she is tearing down urban values. When was Harry Truman’s affirmation of his ’small-town values’ ever taken to be as an affront to the voters of New York City, Philadelphia, Chicago or Atlanta? Seldom, probably never. But when Sarah affirms her belief system is based on living in a small town the MSM and Powell treat it like a personal affront with the express intention to ridicule her to exact some retribution. This is a sign of a bigger problem in America: feigned outrage to legitimate biography, in this case subtling implying that Sarah’s background is ‘illegitimate’ and ‘foreign’ in a sense it no longer represents America, if it ever did. Once the left deems her illegitimate then they’re half way there to declaring everything she says and does and proposes as illegitimate as well. I know the game you guys are playing. I just hope Sarah and whoever is advising her know this as well.

Maybe the reason NoVa votes for big govt has less to do with values and more to do with their jobs and/or pork. Palin was sticking up for small town values, and her doing so doesn’t make her values better than those of big city dwellers.

An example of South Bronx values: don’t snitch EVER. As opposed to small town values: I have a gun, and I’ll shoot, because the cops will take 20 minutes to get here. No more RINOs like Powell speaking for the party, when they were the turncoats this year.

Congratulations Hot Air posters. I’ve been hearing repeatedly how intolerant the right is. So I decided I would test for myself whether Left Blogs or Right Blogs were more intolerant and hatefilled. I posted one racist comment here and was called out immediately and it was suggested a be banned. On the other hand I posted 150 anti-semtic posts on Huffington Post and not one complaint. I have simply proved what I pretty much knew all along. The right is far more tolerant and willing to banish those who make hatefilled comments than the left. Now I’ve probably been banned from this site, but it was worth it. I can now tell my liberal husband with data to back it up that my side is more tolerant .

Psst… Big S is followed by three little letters, the last one being t, and the middle ones are “hi.”

After Colin Powell, a former General who betrayed the Republican Party by endorsing a socialist for President, and who betrayed the military by endorsing a cut-and-run appeaser for President because of his race, what does he know about what’s good for Republicans when he endorsed a Democrat? Oh, by the way, Sarah Palin is Commander-in-Chief of the Alaska National Guard, and she goes out to meet the troops, and they like her, unlike Powell’s new hero Obama, who is too busy to meet them!

Gen. Powell, you left the Republican party–we don’t need your advice. Go advise your ignorant new hero Obama–he needs all the help he can get.

On the other hand I posted 150 anti-semtic posts on Huffington Post and not one complaint.

church on December 11, 2008 at 7:32 PM

Yeah … never understood the anti-semitism from the left.

darwin on December 11, 2008 at 7:37 PM

Like, after all, that moderate, reaching across the aisle candidate really resonated with you, eh?

And exactly why should *any* Republican give a flying fig what General Benedict A Powell thinks? I think Mr. Powell should slink back to his Obama buddies, STFU, and STFD.

This is one of the very few recent news articles that has managed to make me more than angry — I’m livid. How dare he lecture the Republican party on how it should do anything?

Guess he realized that even Obama doesn’t accept turncoats (unless they are willing to blow up the US) and is now realizing he’s not going to get an appointment into the new cabinet.

AZfederalist on December 11, 2008 at 7:37 PM

I listened till the end and it ends with the typical

unfaithful telling the President whatever……

Just like that creep richard clark another fuck

he departs, writes a book and apologises for the leadership.

real dirtbags,

I like how powell says things werent hunky dorry, we had disagreements on basically every aspect of the war….

Duh!, you mean no consensus, how could that be?

He rates about scott mcquillan level.

Sonosam on December 11, 2008 at 7:37 PM

Screw that jerkoff, Powell. What a phony.

Colonoscopy required.

The questions were easy (”what newspapers do you read?”) and she could hardly complete a sentence in response to them. I know my assessment is not scientific, but the standard I’m referencing is pretty low.

Big S on December 11, 2008 at 7:30 PM

Um, yeah, whatever. The “newspaper” thing has been responded to and debunked about a million times. She was annoyed with Couric, who was being snarky and condescending.

But you already know that, you’re just trolling. Do you want to talk rape kits or book burning now? Or are you planning to light straight out into full-on Trig Trutherim?

Jim62sch on December 11, 2008 at 7:39 PM

So, we’re going to take Powell’s advice on how to rebuild the Republican Party?

What next? We choose a Republican Presidential candidate endorsed by the New York Times?

Oh, snap! I’ll just shut up now…

ynot4tony2 on December 11, 2008 at 7:41 PM

Big S on December 11, 2008 at 7:30 PM

You’re not referencing a standard of any kind whatsoever. You’re generalizing something fundamental to a person (and something extremely important) based on a couple of high pressure media interviews that weren’t even designed to measure intelligence. Plenty of people don’t do well with media interviews. You could argue that a VP candidate needs to do better, but even forgetting that her observed behavior in other environments paints a markedly different picture, what you saw was no proxy for a valid intelligence test.

Just come out and say you disagree with the woman’s ideas or didn’t like her background if that’s why you don’t like her. This “Sarah Palin is stupid” narrative is yet one more dishonest, evidence free, lie of an argument that should be shunned by fair minded individuals on both sides of the aisle.

Big S on December 11, 2008 at 7:30 PM

I boil that response to Palin not being media savvy. Do you really think a Governor of state really doesn’t read a newspaper? Come on now.

terryannonline on December 11, 2008 at 7:42 PM

He also said we need to quit listening to Rush Limbaugh. It’s sad to see him take his grudge on Rush public.

Age is robbing him of his senses. A lesson to all.

FireBlogger on December 11, 2008 at 7:42 PM

terryannonline: Sarah needs a hiatus from the trail and by the way it’s the Christmas season. But let me ask you one question: If you were leading in every poll taken after the election for the 2012 GOP nomination and you were now considered by the base as the most popular Republican in the country and by many including myself as its de facto leader and you had several web sites and a weekly radio program set up to back your candidacy, all ready to support you wholeheartedly would you perhaps take a long and hard look at getting back on the campaign trail in the next election cycle? I think so. Contrary to popular MSM belief Sarah is not stupid.

technopeasant on December 11, 2008 at 7:43 PM

Colin Powell = WMD

IlikedAUH2O on December 11, 2008 at 7:44 PM

He says that praising rural values alienates urban voters. But then he praises urban values, which presumably would alienate rural voters according to his logic. Why is one good and the other bad?
Jim62sch on December 11, 2008 at 7:00 PM

Because Sec. Powell thinks only one is smart enough to notice the difference. Rural equals Gov. Palin equals stupid.

Cindy Munford on December 11, 2008 at 7:46 PM

He’ll be as forgotten, but never as respected, as Zell Miller.

This guy’s douchebaggery knows no bounds.

(Gawd, I love that word!)

wccawa on December 11, 2008 at 7:46 PM

Wonder no more. Powell, go pound sand.

Did someone already mention he should do that? Too funny! As if we cared what CP thinks.

kahall on December 11, 2008 at 7:47 PM

Like I’ve said before,SarahCuda is an effective
Republican, and if she wasn’t,then the Liberal
Left wouldn’t say a word, but since they know
Sarah will be a rising force within the Conserv
ative movement, the Left are in a continous ‘Seek
and Destroy Missions’!

Btw,I would rather see,a Republican’s use of any TV
airtime, to be a positive message, and not, one of attack
ing its own colleagues!

canopfor on December 11, 2008 at 7:47 PM

Powell knew all along that Armitage leaked the Plame info and let Libby and everyone else twist in the wind. At the same time he worked the system to get a plume job for his son. No character, no class, no honor.
