Jim DeMint: We’ll have riots if the auto bailout passes; Update: DeMint clarifies
posted at 9:01 pm on December 11, 2008 by Allahpundit
Via Breitbart, he might be right. Or, we might have riots if the bailout doesn’t pass and unemployment inches up towards double digits, as Obama staffers are predicting. How lucky do you feel?
Wonder of wonders, not only are the Dems reportedly seriously considering Corker’s amendment to force the UAW to cut wages to a rate competitive with foreign manufacturers but we may even see a vote on it tonight. Stand by for updates within the next few hours. Exit question: Er, why would the Democrats be willing to compromise? According to Jon Kyl, if Corker’s amendment fails then the bailout is momentarily dead. If that happens, the ball lands squarely in Bush’s court; he can rescue Detroit himself by tapping the TARP money to give them a bridge loan until Obama takes over. Why wouldn’t the Dems want that? That way, they get to hang the bailout around Bush’s neck instead of having to eat it themselves. The question, I guess, is whether you believe Bush would buckle and tap the TARP money after having held out this long. Does a guy with a sub-30 approval rating really want to add to his legacy by becoming known as the president who killed off American automotives? Hmmm.
Update: DeMint’s office sends along a snippet from his exchange with Lou Dobbs to emphasize that he was speaking figuratively, not literally.
DOBBS: Was that hyperbole or do you actually believe that that might be a real reaction?
DEMINT: Well, I was looking for a word to describe how angry people are when they call our office. And we’ve certainly seen protesters in parts of the country who are frustrated that some have been bailed out and they’ve lost their jobs. But people will get angry. Obviously, we don’t want them to riot. But what’s going on up here is just throwing money at the wall and people are very frustrated with us.
DOBBS: You know, Senator, I — I’ve been saying on this broadcast now for some time, I understand some frustration, but the calls for — for Rick Wagoner, the chairman of — the CEO of GM, to be — to leave his post, hearing after hearing and speech after speech by senators and congressman opposing this, it’s $14 billion, we know it’s the first installment. But you guys checked off on trillions of dollars in one vote. I mean it’s unbelievable what the American people are witnessing there in the nation’s capital.
DEMINT: It is. And I voted against that first bailout and all the so-called bailout packages this year. And we’ve committed as you said, over $7 trillion of money we don’t have and Americans are just wondering where is this money going to come from, who are we going to charge it to? And if we continue to bail out one industry and pick winners and losers, the frustration among the American people is going to continue to grow.

Apparently the free markets don’t exist to the unions. The unions want to strong arm us to give them money, just like they did in Chicago with their sit-in.
All I want is a normal wage to be paid if we the taxpayer are going to pay their wages. Aside from that $15bn seem acceptable.

Since Pelosi shut down the House of Representatives, anything that passes in the senate that is different from the House version is dead, right? Unless the House will reconvene for conference, and Pelsoi has already said that wouldn’t happen?
So this is still Bush’s tar baby. B.Franks was calling it ‘Bush’s bill’, Bloomberg was calling it Bush’s bill with an alternative Senate Republican version, so why does anyone think it’s gonna pass?
It’s still blame Bush for the debacle. Nothing changes.

They’re going to ‘hang’ it around GWB’s neck, one way or another, ahead of Christmas, so that he’ll be the Grinch.
If he had any stones left, he’d not touch it. What does he have to lose? Go from 13 to 12?

Hell i am soo ready for a roit. America needs a major roit in the heart of DC to shake the “elites” up. Pitchforks and torches should be the rule of the day.
The Big 3 needs to fail. I have always bought Americian cars but I will not buy another one. Used cars from here on out. To hell with “green” cars. Now they want to tax us by the mile. That is absurd.

Hey,, I sure wouldn’t mind seeing a few hundred thousand people marching in the streets over the bailout. Wouldn’t it be sweet to see about 500,000 people marching somewhere,, anywhere over all the corruption and insanity going on in Washington! It would be something to stand up and cheer about! Just imagine if tomorrow you turned on your news or check HotAir and the headlines were full of Americans from all walks of life,, hundred of thousands marching in hundreds of cities across the nation,,, carrying signs, “Stop the Bailouts!” “Say No to Communism!” “Arrest Barney Frank!” Give Conservatism a Chance” “Free Our Markets” “End Liberal Terror” “Stop the Propaganda!”
Hey,, I can dream,, it’s Christmas!!

Well, what would happen if we, as the American buying public just refused to buy American cars or trucks? What if we refuse to do so until all three automakers go Chapter 11 and throw the Union out on it’s ear?
The Democrat Party will blame their own sainted grandmother’s for problems THEY created so it’s a sure bet President Bush will get yet another bum rap. However, the American public (at least the portion that can think) realizes who is to blame. Let’s riot and create a new Congress without the Socialist panderers.

FNC:
Nearly six in ten Americans (58 percent) disapprove of the federal government giving U.S. automakers billions of dollars in loan money and 37 percent approve. Majority opposition is consistent across party lines as 52 percent of Democrats, 64 percent of Republicans, and 58 percent of independents disapprove of the idea.
Those living in union households are slightly more inclined than Americans in general to approve of loaning money to the automakers: 44 percent approve and 52 percent disapprove.
Moreover, Americans are split on whether the loan money would ever be paid back to the government: 48 percent think it is likely automakers would pay it back and 50 percent disagree.
The national telephone poll was conducted for FOX News by Opinion Dynamics Corp. among 900 registered voters from December 9 to December 10, 2008. The poll has a 3-point error margin.

Remember Paulson’s threat when this all started? If we didn’t pass the $700 bn bailout right then and there, the economy would collapse overnight. What happened after his deadline? Nothing. Nothing happened until the bailout passed. The economy kept chugging along.
Tru dat. When the airlines were having problems a while back, what happened? How much money did they get? $15 bn? Then what happened? Oil spiked and drove the price of tickets higher. Ridership declined. Delta Airlines enter bankruptcy………..and came out more profitable and acquired Northwest Airlines.
Awhile back K-Mart hit rough times. They had to compete with Wal-Mart. They closed stores. People lost their jobs. Eventually, K-mart had to declare bankruptcy……….and came out more profitable and acquired Sears!

I don’t think President Bush is a “My Legacy” kind of guy. Although I haven’t always agreed with his actions (or lack thereof), I have always thought he does what he thinks is best for the country and popular opinion be damned.
As for the bailout, no one really knows what will happen one way or the other. If Bush really is interested in his personal legacy, it won’t really matter which way the bailout goes. He’ll be cursed for it either way.

The UAW should take a pay cut, but not by Congressional FIAT. Just because it accomplishes whats needed doesn’t change that originated from a government mandate.

Well that’s the whole thing in a nutshell, with respect to the bailouts, from the beginning. The public, even “conservatives”, nodded yes to a bailout so that their 401k’s don’t wither. It’s inspiring, isn’t it, to see so many people with malleable principles? I’m for principles as long as it doesn’t inconvenience me! We are moving to cradle-grave government pillows.
DeMint is right about the “fairness” or lack thereof.

califcon on December 11, 2008 at 11:59 PM
The only people that should be forced to eat this crap sandwich is the UAW since their unrealistic demands caused the problem in the first place. The same goes for the SEIU and all the states and cities faced with very similar financial problems. I did not cause this and I shouldn’t have to pay for it through wage confiscation. The unions are going to face a very serious blowback if they don’t relent especially if the card check shit is pushed.

joey24007 on December 11, 2008 at 9:13 PM
Yes, you’re right – it was the fed’s manipulation of interest rates that (to a large extent) caused this. And that was done to prevent or stop recessions.
As for when we “we become a nation that could not let a recession run its course” – that would be 1993 when Clinton took office after beating Bush because of the ’91-’92 recession.

After 8 years you ought to understand by now that GWB makes his decisions based on what he believes is best for our country and not legacy, polls, party, or media.
If he does agree to allow Paulson to use the TARP money it will be because he believes that allowing the automotive industry to collapse is not in the best interest of our country. I respect him for his conviction to his duty as our President even when I don’t agree with his actions. And I acknowledge that he has much more information at hand and a much larger responsibility that involves more than my household, city, or state.
