Breaking: Brussels arrests more than a dozen al-Qaeda suspects
posted at 1:55 pm on December 11, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
How serious was this potential attack? Serious enough that Belgian law enforcement says that one suspected al-Qaeda terrorist had already said goodbye to his family. Police rounded up fourteen suspects in 16 raids, and they think the European Union summit could have been the target (via Power Line):
The arrests were made during 16 raids in Brussels, as European Union leaders gathered for a summit there, and one in Liege.
“We don’t know where the suicide attack was to take place,” federal prosecutor Johan Delmulle said.
“It could have been an operation in Pakistan or Afghanistan, but it can’t be ruled out that Belgium or Europe could have been the target.”
One of the suspects had “received the green light to carry out an operation from which he was not expected to come back,” Mr Delmulle quoted investigators as saying.
The man “had said goodbye to his loved ones, because he wanted to enter paradise with a clear conscience”, he added.
“This information, linked to the fact that a European summit is getting under way at this moment in Brussels, left us no choice but to take action today.”
This particular cell in Belgium has participated in training fighters who later went to the Pakistan-Afghanistan border to battle NATO. The arrests capped off a year-long investigation into the group’s activities, and it looks like the raids intended to head off an attack that may have just been days or hours away.
More to follow as details emerge.

Trial, then execution.

I guess that’s another terrorist cell that didn’t get the memo either.

Are we sure the terrorists’ rights aren’t being violated? I know that is what Barry is thinking.

The Belgians must have done something terrible to provoke this. Peace loving Muslims wouldn’t plan something like this without provocation.

What’s going on? They are jumping the gun. Don’t they know that they aren’t supposed to do anything for (Mark my words, it won’t be six months into his administration, that someone will want to test his mettle – J.B.) another six months.
Jeez, there they go, thinking for themselves again, the selfish bastards.

Understand their grievances, appease them, give them access to courts where they can sue for abuse while in custody, release them in major cities.
I’m feeling changetastic.

There is no death penalty in Europe. Nor is there any serving of an entire life sentence.
They’ll be out in a jiffy.

I’m sure there are people out there that think this is overreacting by the arrests. These are the folks that don’t believe the wet paint signs.

Oh yes. The religion of peace.
I’m sure the Belgians provoked them by offering them refuge and fringe benefits, clearly an indication of aggression.

Look to Christmas and/or New Year’s Eve. I am sure they would like nothing better than to stick it to Bush before he leaves and only a couple weeks before The Black Caesar takes over. Even a minor attack would result in absolute chaos with everyone doing their best Al Haig.

In Medieval England, it was hanging, then beheading, then drawn and quartered, then disemboweled, then the entrails publically burned.
I guess maybe we have gone soft.

While I don’t want to see anymore deaths, this kind of thing only reinforces Europe’s complacency. They need some big hits to shake them out of their comfort zone.

Apparently Brussels has a pretty sketchy underground. I have a relative who used to work for an unnamed three-letter agency, and when I asked him after 9/11 where he thought Osama bin Laden was, he replied without any hesitation, “Brussels.”

Seems to me, Obama could have just wave his hands to solve this ‘conflict’.
Before he makes the ocean level recede, of course.

Meh…I have mixed feelings about this. It would be deliciously ironic for our unelected Prime Minister to be blown up by jihadis in Brussels, when Zanu-Labour has done so much to destroy our sovereignty re: the EU, and has turned the country into Englandistan. Of course, he thinks he’s just saved the world too. We wouldn’t miss him, honestly.

Just as soon as the Idiot gives his speech in Muslim-land, all this stuff will stop like a rabbit changing directions.
He will charm them with his brilliance. You know those madcap Islamomaniacs. They pretend like they hate people born Muslim who converted to Christianity….but as usual, they just kid about it.
And they’ll drop their oil nonsense too, once they undestand the wisdom of going green. They won’t mind the trillions of dollars in lost revenue, since they will clearly see the error of their ways.

Well shoot, wasn’t it in Belgium a few years ago where there was a big pedophile ring busted, that wound up taking down the government?
Not, mind you, that I am in any way implying that a culture which will kill its own daughters if they so look at a man and will marry them off at a young age would have anything to do with pedophilia.
I don’t want to upset Tom Shipley.

Europe’s political elites are the best friends the demographic jihadists have, seems silly to target them. But then again, EU Dhimmis would probably react just as any conquest minded islamophile would desire.
What a sad gutless new world.

I am shocked at Belgium’s ethnic profiling of these peaceable muslims. What does Belgium think it’s doing, cowboy diplomacy? I hope the Belgium authorities have enough comfy chairs to get to the bottom of this misunderstanding.

Mohammad started stealing things and killing his neighbors because he said Allah wanted him to promote a religion that says to steal from your neighbors and kill people.
What’s the surprise here?
profitsbeard on December 11, 2008 at 9:24 PM
It should definitely not be overthrown. Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis attended the EU summit and might have died in the blast. The Greek system of government could have been overthrown by the anarchists and communists. That would have been a disaster.

Looks like the “immigrant youths” fed up with their impoverished state caused by US imperialist foreign policy, turned to terrorism out of a sense of desperation and hopelessness.
When will we learn finally that fighting against terrorism only creates more terrorism? Lest we forget Deepak Chopra’s wise and ethereal words, happy thoughts = happy molecules.
Kidding aside-glad these scumbags were caught but they should’ve had bombs strapped to them and dropped into Pakistani terrorist training camps and detonated.
thinkagain on December 11, 2008 at 11:27 PM
A couple of weeks ago, a group of terrorists sent videos to all the Belgian TV stations in which they said they were going to commit acts of terrorism in Belgium because it sent some troops to Iraq. I live in Belgium, but don’t have a TV; I heard about this from one of my students. It surprises me a bit, because any terrorist attack in any part of Brussels would kill a large number of Muslims.

It it was an attack on the EU summit, I might have found myself actually thanking them…, that bunch of spineless fools are the Islamics best friends, a big own goal killing them!

Lol, good point. The muslims would be doing us a favor by eliminating the leftist commie traitors and clearing the way for the center-right to take over and do what should’ve been done after 9/11-purge this planet of the civilization-destroying disease of Islam.
