Video: Huckabee battles Stewart over gay marriage

Nothing you haven’t heard before but I know how much Hot Air readers like to watch Huck squirm. The tone is set early, with Stewart pressing him on why conservatives think government should be in the business of commanding armies but not, say, handing out cheese or otherwise playing perpetual wet nurse to the population. The gay marriage exchange comes in the second clip; as often happens with opponents, he hops from one justification to the other without trying very hard on any of them. First it’s tradition, then it’s a slippery slope to polygamy, then (by implication) it’s a distinction between immutable traits like race and “lifestyle choices” like homosexuality, then it’s procreation. He’s in retreat the whole way. Not his finest hour.

What are you talking about? I support the voters of California? Who said I didn’t? (I also support the vox populi of the nation at large, which voted for Obama, even if he wasn’t my guy. I’m for democracy in both cases.) What I said was that it’s stupid to insist that the Nazis were gay, based on some conspiracy-theorist crackpot who couldn’t get his book printed by any reputable publishing house. And that many gays have suffered oppression for being gay. That neither makes me gay nor fascist.
By the way, I happen to like a lot of homosexuals. We had a lovely lesbian couple travel from England to Holland for our wedding, bearing gifts; they’re fantastic. I’ve known some others as well and it’s never been a problem in the least. And a lot of my favorite artists are gay, such as Auden, Housman, Cavafy. Whether I approve of homosexuality or any other kind of sexuality doens’t play much of a role.
I can only think you must be a troll and not speaking in propria persona, because you are so much a caricature of conservatism that you can only be some Kos-Kid trying to make this site look bad.

Actually, there are many things being discussed. In the post above, I am discussing your statement that there is a difference in something legal being OK in your mind and something legal not being OK in your mind based on the fact that no one dies in one, but they do in another.
And I do harbor no hard feelings toward you. I generally enjoy your posts. We just disagree on this issue. I could just as easily argue your point, rather than the one I have taken. I suspect that you could do the same. You see, I don’t see you as a bad guy, a troll, or anything else. I just see you as someone I disagree with on this issue. Also, I do not recall ever calling you any type of name, other than pointing out that you are intolerant of some of the positions taken by others. Being intolerant, in and of itself, is not a bad thing. I am intolerant of rape, robbery, incest, and a host of other things. I would expect that you would be also. If I ever have made a post calling you a name, I openly apologize for that.

I’ll accept an apology for your numerous digs at my intelligence and reading comprehension. I prefer to avoid those.
My main point is that in the discussion of legality versus morality, I was first discussing the distinction between pedophilia and homosexuality that others were claiming were equal, it seemed, at least in morality. I pointed out that one was legal and one was not, due to the latter involving the violation of another’s rights.
The next example was abortion versus homosexuality, those both being legal. Now, apart from my own feeling that abortion is wrong, I pointed out that one of the reasons abortion is so hotly debated is because, like it or not, it involves the destruction of a living being. Is it a human or just a fetus? Doesn’t matter for purposes of this discussion, because it still involves killing.
Now, other than the curious practice of engaging Lemmiwinks on his fabled journey (south park reference, google if you want to know more), I am not familiar with homosexual activities that always involve the destruction of a living thing. In terms of morality, I see them as being worlds apart. Would both acts performed before my eyes digust me? Yes. Doesn’t mean I think they’re immoral. The idea that certain straight couples in this country may have sex would disgust me as well, and I would be wondering how the bed could support 1000 lbs. worth of action.
So, the legal standpoint being moot, I was focusing on the immutable basic attributes of homosexual acts versus the others being compared.
