Video: Ayers still not sure nonviolent protest is better than setting bombs

posted at 8:36 pm on December 10, 2008 by Allahpundit

“I think we made enormous mistakes,” he concedes, then quickly qualifies it by urging us to remember the context of the times. I searched for a way to describe his shtick here but can’t do better than this bit from Timothy Noah’s review of his book:

Ayers periodically expresses mild regret for his crimes, in tones reminiscent of a middle-aged insurance executive who wishes he hadn’t gotten drunk quite so often at his college fraternity. “We took ourselves so seriously–OK, a little too seriously, we were too earnest by half and way too insistent,” he writes at one point. “[F]rom the edges, we were entirely inflexible, maybe even a bit goofy.” But in the process of describing such youthful indiscretions, Ayers invariably winds himself up into a self-exculpating frenzy.

The frenzy begins about a third of the way in, after he and Matthews spend a few minutes playing pattycake over how mean Sarah Palin was to “exploit” the fact that our next president used to fraternize with a terrorist. As you’ll see, Matthews actually has a personal connection to the Weathermen’s targets, which only makes Ayers’s ambivalence — “I don’t want to defend what we did but nor do I think it was completely insane” — that much more callous. Exit question: Has this degenerate ever once explained how those bombs were supposed to have ended the war? Did he honestly think Nixon and the Pentagon were prepared to stare down millions of protesters at the polls but that pipe bombs in the Capitol’s men’s room were going to panic them into a pullout?

This guy really makes me grind my teeth to keep from cursing.

urging us to remember the context of the times

Yeah, those times involved my dad getting shot at, having grenades thrown at him and bombs dropped on him, and watching his buddies die. Get this straight Bill, he didn’t appreciate you blowing stuff up, and calling him a baby killer, and jeering at him in the airport then. And he doesn’t appreciate it now. You should be thankful that you’ll probably never run into him. Shut up Bill.

meltenn on December 10, 2008 at 8:56 PM

I’d really like someone to ask this guy what he thinks about abortion clinics being bombed.

JellyToast on December 10, 2008 at 8:59 PM

Does Ayers EVER manage to wear something that doesn’t make him look like an warmed-up, hippy leftover from the 60’s trying to be eighteen years old again?

You scumbag, buy a frickin suit and shave every now and then, you look like a crackhead.

Janos Hunyadi on December 10, 2008 at 9:00 PM

I also get the distinct impression that Ayers mumbles to himself quite a bit, having conversations with his long-deceased Weatherman buddies.

The worst part is that if the Dems had made Ayers their presidential nominee this fall, millions of people – ignorant, evil or otherwise – would have gone to the polls and voted for him.

Ayers makes me sick to my stomache. Cant we make him “special emissary” to Darfur or attache him to “investigate” the Somali pirates? I mean then he can see first hand how anarchy and those bombs of his can stop wars, right? Of course he will blame it all on America, but we dont have to pay his ransom or search for his body in dangerous areas, right?

Chrissy comes clean and admits he was a war protester back in the day, just to show Ayers he’s on the same team. Shouldn’t have any trouble having John Fn Kerry come to PA to campaign for him if he runs. Ayers too, for that matter.

Why are all leftards spineless jerks?

fogw on December 10, 2008 at 9:32 PM

Read the transcript of this interview — Does Matthews listen to one iota of what his guest is saying when he generally believes in most of what his guest does and just wants to get on to the next question?

Chris asks about the bombing, but only as it appears, in order to show he was tangential to a piece of Vietnam War-era history, not to actually listen to Ayers show virtually no remorse for an attack that could have killed one of Matthews’ co-workers and then ask a follow-up question. Ayers probably could have thrown in to his answer that he also likes to have sex with 2-year-olds while Bernadine watches and Chris would have just gone on to the remainder of his interview questions.

Quick Quiz: What’s the difference between Bill Ayers and Tim McVeigh?
Answer 1: McVeigh is way more competent!
Answer 2: McVeigh is a right wing dingbat and Ayers is a left wing dingbat!
Answer 3: McVeigh was tried, convicted and executed while Ayers was made a professor and hangs out in the airy salons of the elite!

That’s it! That’s all!

And nobody even thinks to ask the most important question of all; “So tell me Professor Ayers, do you think planting bombs and endangering lives and destroying the private property of others is a legitimate form of protest?”
And the begged follow-up question to any kind of positive response; “Would you then applaud the use of identical tactics by protesters whose cause is one you don’t agree with?”

Bill and his precious friends will always arrogate to themselves the right to violence and murder, all the while demanding with self-righteous sanctimony that even the slightest transgression of others be punished with maximum severity.
There is a special corner in Hell for shriveled soulless creatures like Ayers, and an even hotter one for those who admire them.

Bears repeating–rest assured, William Ayer’s agenda remains unchanged. It’s simply being pursued sans explosives now.

irongrampa on December 10, 2008 at 9:58 PM

Matthews usually leans pretty hard on guests who are the least bit evasive, so it puzzled me that he tolerated the abundance of it from this guy. Perhaps he was afraid the guy would toss a hissy-fit and walk off the set. Ayers displays the sense of denial and moral indifference common to those who commit heinous acts without subsequent remorse. He got off easy in this interview, as he has gotten off easy in life.

THIS life, at least.

juliesa on December 10, 2008 at 10:30 PM

I posted this before, but even NPR gave Ayers a harder time on the violence issue than some of the TV people. The hostess asked him twice how he could claim that his bombs were never meant to hurt or terrorize anyone, when he set 2 pounds of dynamite in the Pentagon ladies room. How was he sure no one would get hurt? He finally admitted that it was lucky no one got hurt.

FireBlogger on December 10, 2008 at 11:18 PM

Ayres thinks Gov. Palin is bad and despicable because she wants people to ask who Obama is????? We are still a ways from finding out. But when and how did that become an unfair question? And it was very possible Ayres could have killed Matthews and the two of them are on the far edge of being close to being bothered about that weird situation. Apparently Matthews no longer has much of a drive for self-preservation. I would say that disqualifies him from the life and death decisions a senator has to make.
The whole thing had a dreamlike unreality to it.

snaggletoothie on December 10, 2008 at 11:33 PM

Realistically, we all know that Ayers will not submit to an interview from the right. But can the left do a honest interview with this bomb thrower? Is there anyone that can have a full on, appraisal of what he did with complete integris? Anyone? Please… this is getting to be so nauseating, can’t they see how dishonest they are?

Sergei on December 10, 2008 at 11:47 PM

Somebody needs to ask Bill the Terrorist what about the millions killed in Cambodia after the US pulled out of Vietnam. Does he feel any responsibility for the genocide that occurred once the US lost the war, just like he wanted us to?

Somebody remind Bill the Terrorist that America stands for freedom and liberty. Let the nations of the world join us. We don’t have to stoop to their standards just so we can be liked. Though the dummycrats are doing their best to reduce us to that level.

So, Sarah Palin says Obama was “palling around with terrorists,” and that’s outrageous and dishonest.

Actually planting bombs in public buildings and creating a bomb — that fortunately failed — that would have destroyed a lot of lives of soldiers and their dates at a dance, that’s just a not-terribly-effective form of protest.

Just trying to get the context straight, as recommended by Bill Ayers.

But hey, he had to do something to put a stop to the murders going on in Vietnam. Which, strangely enough, were all being done by American soldiers. Apparently no blame fell to the notoriously bloody communists, even though the the communist North Vietnamese were the ones actually invading another country, and sparking a war.

Ladies and gentlemen: the modern college professor

No, I think I’ll stick with Sarah Palin’s assessment.

Ayers has a book to sell. Plus he’s now officially a FOO (Friend of Obama). (Wasn’t it fun how Ayers before the election was just “some guy who happens to live in my neighborhood” who Obama claimed he barely knew — but after the election Ayers was acknowledged as a trusted “family friend” of the Obamas.)

*sigh* Unfortunately, I watched the blasted thing.
Yes, Matthews was playing softball with Ayers…to the point that he ignored complete evasions of questions.

As to why, this interview and the NYT piece (and I’m sure more to follow) are all part and parcel with a whitewash of Ayers.
They’re helping him to sanitize what the WU did by enabling him to claim that it all was part of protesting Vietnam, rather than a series of attacks by self-described Marxists to destroy and take over the state.

Why they would help him do such a thing I don’t know….although if I had to make a guess, I’d say that there is some place in the new administration for Ayers, probably as an education policy advisor (or some new education initiative) and he needs to be cleaned up first.
