Reid to Blago: Don’t let a Republican win this seat!

posted at 6:45 pm on December 10, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

OK, OK, he didn’t explicitly say that, but that’s what frightens Harry Reid about a special election for Barack Obama’s open Senate seat.  In a letter to the beleaguered governor of Illinois, Reid urged Rod Blagojevich to resign immediately, and not because Blagojevich has been exposed as a crook, or because Illinois deserves honest government.  As Chris Cillizza reports, Reid wants Blagojevich out of the way now so the Illinois legislature won’t have the chance to call a special election that Democrats could lose:

The momentum for a special election to replace President-elect Barack Obama ran into a major hurdle late this afternoon in the form of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (Nev.) who penned a letter today to scandal-tarred Gov. Rod Blagojevich making clear he would prefer the incumbent step aside and let Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn make the appointment.

“It is within the authority of the Illinois legislature to remove your power to make this appointment by providing for a special election,” wrote Reid in a letter obtained by The Fix. “But a decision by you to resign or to step aside under Article V of the Illinois Constitution would be the most expeditious way for a new Senator to be chosen and seated in a manner that would earn the confidence of the people of Illinois and all Americans.”

Reid adds that his preference for an appointment by Blagojevich’s successor rather than a special election is driven by his belief that it is “imperative” that a new senator from Illinois be seated as soon as possible. An appointment by Quinn, a Democrat, also avoids the possibility that Democrats could lose the seat in a shortened special election campaign.

The timeline being floated in Illinois political circles would be for party primaries to take place on Feb. 24 with a general election on April 7 — a schedule that would leave the Senate seat vacant for at least three months.

Well, isn’t that classy?  Illinois is in the middle of one of the worst political crises at the state level in American history, and Reid wants one of the existing establishment to hand-pick its Senator.  I’m sure Illinois residents really trust their government now.  Nice to see Reid’s priorities are in the right order!  At least Dick Durbin got that much right when he called for a special election instead of an appointment.

On the plus side, Reid also tells Blagojevich not to even think about making the appointment himself.  Anyone the disgraced governor sends to Capitol Hill had better have a round-trip ticket back to Springfield, Reid warns. He’ll use the Constitutional power of the Senate to deny that appointee membership, and it’s hard to find anyone, Democrat or Republican, who would buck Reid on that threat.

Reid knows that an election in Illinois will put the seat at risk of Republican takeover after the Blagojevich scandal plays all the way out.  Illinois needs to clean house, and that’s the first opportunity they will get.  You can bet that Reid wants to avoid that as much as any Democrat, but this tone-deaf plea to a corruptocrat for a back-room deal smells bad enough to stink up the entire 111th Congress and give everyone else the same idea for the 2010 midterms.

Dr. Dalrymple: I think it more likely that there will be an increase in corporatism than in socialism. America will not be socialist, but it might be corporatist (there is always a tendency to this deformation in modern societies). You will find an increase in public spending with an increase in contracts given to businessmen with political contacts or who are politically pliable. Mr. Obama strikes me as a Blair figure rather than, say, a Leninist. This will lead to a swamp of corruption very difficult to eradicate because it will be legalized corruption, which is very hard to eliminate once started. An important thing to look for will be the corruption of statistics; for once they are corrupted, no one can know what is going on in the larger picture, and this gives carte blanche for the looting of the public purse by private interests linked to politicians, all in the name of procuring benefits for the public.

“But a decision by you to resign or to step aside under Article V of the Illinois Constitution would be the most expeditious way for a new Senator to be chosen and seated in a manner that would earn the confidence of the people of Illinois and all Americans.”

So, let me get this straight. The People of Illinois will have more confidence in an appointment by a tainted (by association) Lt. Governor than they would in their own vote?

Do I have that right, Harry? People have more confidence in their Democrat betters than they have in themselves…

The People of Illinois will have more confidence in an appointment by a tainted (by association) Lt. Governor than they would in their own vote?

Yup. Donkey logic.

Actually, wasn’t the Lt. Governor the one who dealt with Bank of America this week? I would not be quick to assume that he’s only tainted by association.

Y-not on December 10, 2008 at 7:19 PM

Anyone that the Lt. Gov. of Illinois appoints would perhaps be equally suspect since Chicago patronage seems to call the shots.

How many seats on the Dem side have virtually been vacant these last so many months/years? Obama (fer sure), Kennedy, the fellow out West who had the stroke- Johnson? Have these vacancies lessened the negative impact of the party of the jackasses?

onlineanalyst on December 10, 2008 at 7:21 PM

Blago will not resign. That is the only leverage he has going into a plea bargain. He needs to offer his resignation in return for lenient treatment. If he has already resigned, the Prosecutor will run all over him.

gridlock2 on December 10, 2008 at 7:21 PM

Contrary to popular belief (including Reid, apparently) it is more likely that the Illinois Dems are calling for a special election precisely to stop Quinn, not Blago, from appointing a Senator. As Reid pointed out, no one appointed by Blago will be accepted by the Senate, so removing Blago by resignation or impeachment will have no effect on him making an appointment. If the Illinois Dems wanted Quinn to make the appointment, they would start impeachment proceedings right away, not call for a special election.

Buford Gooch on December 10, 2008 at 7:24 PM

Why not just appoint Chris Matthews into the seat, and give the lad a thrill?

The problem with the Illinois Republican party is their tendency to rely on self-financing millionaires rather than experienced political operators. (See the Jim Oberweis debacle). Most of the CW is that Rep. Kirk will get the Republican nod; this is the perfect situation for him because he can test the waters without giving up his house seat. Unless Jim Edgar or Jim Ryan want to run and I couldn’t see either taking the plunge. Edgar had health issues when he was governor (quad. bypass surgery) and seems to be enjoying retirement. I know that Rove was trying to get him to run in 2004 for the Senate and Edgar declined. Jim Ryan had that horrible personal situation with his son committing suicide, so he probably won’t.
