I live in downstate Illinois. Don’t blame all of Illinois for these corrupt politicians. They are elected by the area above I80 which is Chicago and surrounding areas. The Illinois constitution of the 1970′s changed the Senate from a geographical base to population base. This along with the population increase up north means Chicago and area control the elections. The Chicago Machine is deep and dirty and Obama is involved up to his eyeballs. But I am sure he will be protected by the media and the democrats.

This Blago is guilty as sin — but of what? Are they going to nail him on the children’s hospital deal? The threats to the Tribune? Scummy conduct but seriously, nothing a good trial lawyer can’t get him out of. So, my guess is the machine in Chicago has sent him a message to go quietly and the heat won’t be so hot.

The Black Caesar does not need this sort of distraction even before he takes office. So, he and Rahm will be happy to see Blago disappear.

So, my gut tells me Blago is being told to play along and he will not see a prison cell. But if he names himself to Obama’s seat or plops someone in there between now and next week, they will see to it that he boils in oil.

Dumb question: If the Illinois legislature passes a statute revoking the Governor’s authority to appoint for vacant federal elected positions, doesn’t that bill need to be signed…. by the Governor? Or does Illinois do things totally differently than every other state?

I don’t think the legislature can just pass a new law saying the US Senate position has to be filled by some means other than appointment by the Governor. Isn’t an amendment to the state constitution required in order to make this change? If so what is the process by which Illinois amends its constitution? How long would that take? It seems the more expedient thing would be for the legislature to prevail upon Blago to resign and then have the Lt. Gov. move up and make the appointment through a very transparent selection process.
