ABC: Candidate who allegedly offered Blago money for Senate seat is Jesse Jackson Jr

posted at 1:05 pm on December 10, 2008 by Allahpundit

Better and better. Yesterday he was shocked, shocked to find influence peddling going on. Today? Meet “Senate Candidate 5″:

Chicago Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr. (D-IL) is the anonymous “Senate Candidate #5″ whose emissaries Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich reportedly claimed offered up to a million dollars to name him to the U.S. Senate, federal law enforcement sources tell ABC News.

According to the FBI affidavit in the case, Blagojevich “stated he might be able to cut a deal with Senate Candidate 5 that provided ROD BLAGOJEVICH” with something “tangible up front.”

Jackson Jr. said this morning he was contacted yesterday by federal prosecutors in Chicago who he said “asked me to come in and share with them my insights and thoughts about the selection process.”

Jackson Jr. said “I don’t know” when asked if he was Candidate #5, but said he was told “I am not a target of this investigation.”…

“It is impossible for someone on my behalf to have a conversation that would suggest any type of quid pro quo or any payments or offers,” Jackson Jr. told ABC News. “An impossiblity to an absolute certainty.”…

The FBI says in an October 31, 2008 conversation, Blagojevich described an approach from an associate of Senate Candidate 5: “We were approached ‘pay to play.’ That, you know, he’d raise me 500 grand. An emissary came. Then the other guy would raise a million, if I mad him (Senate Candidate 5) a Senator.”

Fancy that: Another Democratic politician whose cronies allegedly took it upon themselves, completely on their own initiative, to throw money around on their boss’s behalf. Fred Baron did the same thing for John Edwards, you’ll recall, shoveling money to Silky’s mistress for months purely out of the goodness of his heart, unbidden by his political patron. Liberals sure do have amazing friends.

It sounds like they’re talking about campaign fundraising here, not money in briefcases being passed under the table, which presumably makes this the sort of routine backscratching scumbaggery extolled by Axelrod in his 2005 op-ed rather than an actionable offense. Use your office to line your own pockets and you go to jail; use it to line your campaign’s pockets and you’re just practicing Illinois politics. Although didn’t the feds record Blago at one point whining that he felt “stuck” in the governor’s job and wanted something that was more prestigious or more lucrative? For which office was he planning to run that he needed Jackson to fundraise for him?

ABC also notes that Blago and Jackson met just two days ago, at which point Blago said he was close to making a decision. Exit question: Is that why Fitzgerald arrested him now? Byron York studied the timeline and speculates that the Tribune’s story on December 5 about wiretapping spooked Blagojevich into clamming up, putting the investigation at a dead end. I’m skeptical; given how reckless and stupid he is, he’d have started talking again and Fitzgerald surely knew it. I wonder if in fact the feds didn’t move in because they were worried that the appointment was imminent and knew that having this news break after the fact would surround the appointee with a royal political clusterfark.

Update: If you missed Jim Lindgren’s timeline this morning connecting news items on Obama’s preference for the Senate seat to the details of the FBI complaint, make time to read it. It sure sounds like someone within Team Barry got nervous. But who, and why?

Let’s cut to the chase, give us the big fish.

“It is impossible for someone on my behalf to have a conversation that would suggest any type of quid pro quo or any payments or offers,” Jackson told ABC News. “An impossibility to an absolute certainty.”

So we know that the chances are somewhere between impossible to certain. Can we assume it’s the latter?

I apologize for skipping reading the post (for the moment) but I have to credit radio host Mancow for floating this rumor on Fox & Friends this morning.

Aside from being shocked about this travesty, I’m very surprised that Jesse uh, Jaxxson’s son looks like a moron. Well, I guess that explains why he offered Blago the dough.

I think we’re getting the first indications that the Dems have assembled the circular firing squad and laid down plastic sheeting. This is going to get ugly. I won’t hold back from saying, “We told you so.”

That was sarcasm, BTW.

Christine on December 10, 2008 at 1:11 PM

Expect Jesse Jr. to try and brazen it out in Charlie Rangel fashion, based on the security of his House seat, unless Fitzgerald actually has some audio that can prove Candidate No. 5 knew of and approved the contact with Blago.

Another Democratic politician whose cronies allegedly took it upon themselves………

There’s the rub, AP. Unless they have some evidence of Jesse Jr. personally making a deal with Blago, not much here. Jesse will most definately lawyer-up if he’s smart.

Big Jesse wants someone else’s nuts now.

BacaDog on December 10, 2008 at 1:13 PM

My question is with all this corruption and money being thrown around, where is the IRS (other than continuing to bug me for extra money YEARS after I’ve paid everything)? How is this money laundered so that it can’t be found. This isn’t just a one person thing. This is an institutional problem.

This incident might well illustrate the perils of offering unfettered powers to people you elect (corruption is possible even when the people choose leaders through ‘democracy’). This is the best argument possible for smaller government. Even if you like a politician and want him to have more power, when that politician is gone, those powers will remain. When powers are available to corrupt politicians, politicians will be corrupt.

ThackerAgency on December 10, 2008 at 1:13 PM

AP, even if such behavior is now acceptable and even de rigueur, the strong spotlight of the law will likely find prosecutable fault with it.

Paul-Cincy on December 10, 2008 at 1:13 PM

Is anyone really surprised?

Jr. just found his own bag for bilking this nation.

Just the fact that this clown was elected is a sign of the spiraling decline of this nation.

Obama and the rest of that slimy Democrat/leftist cesspool make me want to puke. Sorry, there’s just no other way to put it.

Amazing how we could have voted in two proven reformers like McCain/Palin but instead we vote in a couple of typical back scratching pols and their sleezy friends.

DeathToMediaHacks on December 10, 2008 at 1:18 PM

Jackson said he agreed to talk with federal investigators “as quickly as possible” after he consulted with a lawyer.

Every word he offers to Fitz will be parsed, checked and double-checked by his legal team. I don’t blame him for lawyering up in this case, but I don’t think he’s gonna volunteer anything they don’t already know.

cs89 on December 10, 2008 at 1:18 PM

Jr. misspoke.

Juan Williams was amazed that Hannity didn’t take the Obama “camp’s” statement that Axelrod misspoke at face value. Williams said you had to, as they were honorable men. Made me laugh.

JiangxiDad on December 10, 2008 at 1:19 PM

Yea, bryan…they want to circle the wagons now, get the blood-letting done asap so Barry Whosane won’t be asked any (more) hard questions about this. Unlike Jesse Jr, Obama is a smart cookie and wouldn’t let himself get involved in a scandal like this. In other words, he don’t need no stinking goon-bahs no more.
The larger issue is that Chicago/Ill. politics was the vehicle that has taken Obama to this point and he did more than nothing to change the corruption in that system, he added to it. Try telling that to the obama kool-aid drinkers and you’ll get sprayed with a vicious verbal volley. The 3 Vs.

In my law books, offering a bribe is just as much a crime as solicitation.

Jesse needs to hit the books. For now, he just 86′d himself from any list to fill the seat. In fact, as a precaution, anyone within two degrees of separation from Blago is going to be turned away from Obama’s door for a while.

And on the upside, Lou Bega is making a comeback with “Senate Candidate #5″.

Ladies and Gentlemen, this is Senate Candidate Number 5

One, two, three, four, five
Everybody in the BUS, so come on
Let’s ride to the governor’s mansion around the corner
The boys say they want some gin and juice
But I really don’t wanna
Beerbust like I had last week
I must stay deep
Because talk is cheap
I like Michelle, Hillary, Susan and Valerie-a
And as I continue you know
They are getting sweeta
So what can I do I really beg and you my Lord
To me racketeering it’s just like sport, anything fly
It’s all good let me dump it
Please set in the trumpet

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on December 10, 2008 at 1:30 PM

Like I said earlier, this whole thing is getting better and better by the hour.

pilamaye on December 10, 2008 at 1:29 PM

Yes. There are sooo many people involved. They won’t possibly be able to keep their stories straight. And most don’t know the full story, so they won’t know what not to say in any case. Better yet, since they’re all low-lifes, they’ll start selling each other out.

JiangxiDad on December 10, 2008 at 1:32 PM

I have a suggestion: With Illinois’ inerrant tendency to elect criminals, I say we use it as the nation’s courtroom. Anyone on trial for a crime is required to run for public office in Illinois. If the defendant wins, the judge pronounces a guilty verdict and sends the defendant straight to prison.

Rush is speculating why Fitz shut down the investigation prematurely. Was anyone about to accept the offer that ending the investigation would prevent? Were all the quid pro quo’s established?

JiangxiDad on December 10, 2008 at 1:21 PM

It was probably because Blago. was getting close to appointing a replacement Senator. Fitzgerald couldn’t let Blago. sell a U.S. Senate seat and then come around and tell the Chicago public three months later. “Blago sold the U.S. Senate seat three months ago for a million dollars to JJ Jr., and I knew about it and did nothing… My bad.” It would have damaged the U.S. DA’s office in Chicago and made it harder for him to prosecute. I don’t think that the others make sense. I know that many conservatives don’t like Fitzgerald because of the Plame affair, but he’s equally zealous with both Rs and Ds here in Chicago.

I also don’t think that the investigation is ending. Fitzmas came early this year because it would have looked horrendous if Fitzgerald didn’t stop Blago. from selling the Senate seat. The formal indictment will likely contain more than two charges. There will also be more people indicted, starting with Blago’s wife and some of her family. It seems that based on the tapes, she knew what was going on and Fitz. has been known to use family members to get the main guy to sing. (Probably probation or a suspended sentence for his wife in return for Blago. naming names). Also, Senate Candidate #5 will definitely be sweating out for a few months and his dreams of a career promotion just went bye-bye.

petefrt on December 10, 2008 at 1:25 PM

The Obama team is going to end up being distracted by this and if it turns out that someone high up (Emanuel or Axelrod) knew that Blago was using the Senate appointment to get his and didn’t let Fitzgerald know, then it is unethical. However, they didn’t do anything illegal in this case; it looks like they specifically stopped participating in the process because it was so dirty. More than likely, Fitzgerald had to act because if he let the Senate deal go through, the public perception would be so awful that it would be impossible for him to continue with his investigation.

right2bright on December 10, 2008 at 2:21 PM

They stopped short for some reason

Just my opinion based on everything I’ve read:

1) The Trib broke the story that Blago was being recorded.
2) Fitz knew that the opportunity to gather more evidence based on the bugs was done.
3) There was a pending appointment to a US Senate seat.
4) To present the evidence to a grand jury would take months
5) No guarantee Fitz would remain US Attorney after Jan 20th, especially if the undercover investigation was in process
6) Due to the above, he went with what he had to apply for arrest warrants.

right2bright on December 10, 2008 at 2:20 PM

The public outrage would be too great. Appointing someone to a senate seat is not like staking out a drug deal and the quid pro quo seems more complex than handing envelopes of cash out. Fitzgerald couldn’t go public three months later and say… Oh by the way, Jackson Jr. bought that Senate seat and I knew all along.

Illinidiva on December 10, 2008 at 2:26 PM

Jackson Jr. said this morning he was contacted yesterday by federal prosecutors in Chicago who he said “asked me to come in and share with them my insights and thoughts about the selection process.”

So let me get this straight…Jesse Jr. seems to believe that federal prosecutors (who had just arrested Gov. Blago) wanted to meet with him and get his thoughts and advice on the selection process?

Nothing to do with the arrest, nor with his association with the Gov. nor with his aspirations to get the Senate appointment. No questions about the suggestion of a quid pro quo or any of that.

Nope. Just “sharing” about the process over coffee and doughnuts.

“Move along…I’m not the one you’re looking for…”

How about let’s just make this whole next 4 or 8 or 24 years or whatever — let’s just make this our reparation for slavery. I’m already sick to my stomach and Obama has only recently assumed the Office of the President Elect.

Great slide show. Numbers 1, 7, 9 and 45 are incredibly telling.

That’s the media quote. He’s stated he’ll talk with them, after consulting his lawyer, as soon as possible.

In other words, he’s quietly getting his legal ducks in a row, publicly distancing himself, and being cooperative w/o volunteering anything they don’t already know.

The only questions for him are, did he do anything troubling, and does Fitz know it?

Perhaps not all the way, but they could have had this go on…the point is, why did they stop it now?

First we had this:

“I triple guarantee you, there are no American soldiers in Baghdad.”

then:

“They’re not even [within] 100 miles [of Baghdad]. They are not in any place. They hold no place in Iraq. This is an illusion … they are trying to sell to the others an illusion.”

then:

“Yes, the american troops have advanced further. This will only make it easier for us to defeat them”

then:

There are only two American tanks in the city.”

and lastly:

“We are winning!”

Now we have this:

“It is impossible for someone on my behalf to have a conversation that would suggest any type of quid pro quo or any payments or offers, An impossiblity to an absolute certainty.”…

Next, I guess he’ll be saying something about smacking somebody with his shoes.

This is not the Illinois governor I knew.
Every time you think no more bodies will fit under Obama’s bus, he gets bigger tires.

No, that’s a Jesse Jackson Jr. quote. Straight from the horses mouth.
