Obama: I never talked to Blagojevich about the Senate seat; Axelrod: Yes, he did; Update: Axelrod misspoke, says Obama camp

posted at 4:18 pm on December 9, 2008 by Allahpundit

Sweet catch by Tapper, showing why he got that promotion. Obama today

“I had no contact with the governor or his office and so I was not aware of what was happening, ” Obama told reporters today in Chicago. “It’s a sad day for Illinois. Beyond that, I don’t think it’s appropriate to comment.”

…versus Axelrod on November 23, as seen below. Be sure to read Tapper’s post, as he has plenty more on The One’s long history as a friend of — and advisor to — Blago. Axelrod himself begged off Blagojevich’s first gubernatorial campaign because “I was concerned about whether he was ready for … governing.” Not so Obama and Emanuel; they both served as advisors, and they and Blago went on endorsing each other to the bitter end.

Update: Awesome. Let’s just drag this out as long as possible. Either we get the spectacle of the Illinois legislature impeaching him or we get the spectacle of Blago appointing The One’s successor while in jail. And based on the charges, he’s just stupid/nutty enough to do it.

“He didn’t do anything wrong,” attorney Sheldon Sorosky told reporters after Blagojevich was arraigned. “A lot of this is just politics.”

Blagojevich should be in the office Wednesday, Sorosky added.

So, reporters asked, he does not intend to resign?

“Not that I know of, no,” said Sorosky, who added that the governor was “surprised” by the day’s events.

Update: Wouldn’t you know it, turns out Axe spoke … inartfully. When did they last speak, then, wonders Ben Smith.

It’s going to be the scandal-of-the-month club with the Obama presidency. The IL gov scandal was just a teaser of what’s to come. Rezko won’t like jail too much and will sing like a canary sometime in the spring. Blago won’t do well in prison either with that high-maintenance hairdo so he’ll start talking soon. Let the peeling of the onion begin.

A couple unrelated observations:
1.Call me paranoid, but Tapper’s piece on the ABC evening news tonight curiously suffered a microphone malfunction.

2.Should Blagojevich resign, his successor (with the senatorial appointment power) would become Republican Lieutenant Governor Pat Quinn. In the event, I’m guessing that’s a party labeling detail the MSM might be less dismissive of than they seem to be of Blagojevich’s.

If Obama did not tell Blagojevich his preference, what led him to make the following statement during the conversation below? Who was it that informed him of BO’s choice?

“In a Nov. 11 phone conversation with an aide, Blagojevich talked at length about “Candidate 1″ and said he knew that Obama wanted her for the open seat but “they’re not willing to give me anything except appreciation. (Expletive) them.”

Either Ax messed up and told the truth or someone on Obama’s “staff” has some explaining to do to a Grand Jury.

McCain was and is a fiscal pro-life conservative with unquestioned knowledge and experience in foreign policy, military matters and national security — knowledge and experience that we will long to have in the years ahead.

Jake Tapper has a second update now, that reads:

(UPDATE #2: Axelrod this evening issued a statement saying. “I was mistaken when I told an interviewer last month that the President-elect has spoken directly to Governor Blagojevich about the Senate vacancy. They did not then or at any time discuss the subject.”)

The timing of the arrest and indictment is very interesting.

Class C (political appointees), US Attorneys like Fitzgerald, submit their resignations after each presidential election. Their resignations may be picked up, or not.

Fitzgerald’s was likely going to be picked up, in order to bury any investigation, to date.

However, if a U.S. Attorney has an on-going case under indictment, he likely gets to stay on until the case is resolved. It would look fishy otherwise.

Nope, he gets a pass on the Keating 5 also, according to Robert Bennett. Also when the people snookered by Mr. Keating took him to civil court, Sen. Seems to me Fitzgerald dropped this when he did well before the inauguration to create buzz and prevent Obama from replacing him once sworn in. Entelechy on December 9, 2008 at 9:25 PM

The tragedy that we as a nation will face is that what dominated electoral politics this year will only be part of what bedevils us in the years ahead.

There were “headwinds” that precluded not just John McCain but any Republican from being elected President this year — a financial meltdown that created economic anxieties that have historically favored the Democrats and did this year; a Bush Administration financial bailout that muddied the waters of what was a Reaganesque economic message delivered by McCain and Palin on the campaign trail; the unpopularity of Bush, which is unfair but which is the result of unceasing attack by the Left and Bush not using the bully pulpit to defend his Administration and Republicans; money and more money, some of it illegal, that Obama had (see Karl Rove article last week in the WSJ); and media bias that was absurdly in the tank for Obama and that operated effectively day-in, day-out as a propaganda machine for Democrats.

But as the terrorist attacks in India demonstrate, the radical Islamists have not gone away, and Putin in Russia, Chavez in Venezuela and Ahmadinejad in Iran are all trouble waiting to happen. Integrity in Government will be a persistent big problem — would you expect otherwise from a Chicago machine politician who had and will have tons of money at his disposal? And on top of this, the Democrats in Congress and the White House are pushing hard to impose socialism in this country when what we need is the opposite — a private sector that is in a position to expand and create jobs.

Phil Byler on December 9, 2008 at 9:27 PM

More on Axelrod and Blago from Hannity:

Axelrod had worked for Blagojevich in his past races for the House, but he declined to work on his gubernatorial run.

“He had been my client and I had a very good relationship with him, but I didn’t sign on to the governor’s race,” Axelrod told the New Yorker. “Obviously he won, but I had concerns about it…I was concerned about whether he was ready for that. Not so much for the race but for governing. I was concerned about some of the folks — I was concerned about how the race was being approached.”

Strange that Axelrod first says he was concerned about the governing and then says he was concerned about the race.

Jake Tapper has another post he put up tonight:

Obama’s Answer on Blagojevich — and the Questions it Raises

Team Obama is all over the criminal complaint — as seemingly innocent characters, perhaps even potential victims, of the Blago drama. But they’re in there nonetheless, and that is highly unusual.

Tapper goes over the implications and contradictions and closes by talking about transparency:

On its website, President-elect Obama’s Transition Team is making a big deal about transparency, posting memos and information about meetings with various, largely supportive organizations.

True transparency means a little more than that, one might posit. It means telling voters about matters that aren’t entirely comfortable to share.

If one is just counting as being “transparent” the act of sharing meetings with environmental groups delighted to be counting down the days until Wyoming gets its favorite son back, then the notion might not mean much.

And that would mean that in order to truly be transparent, the American people need to find out as much as possible, as soon as possible, about what role anyone Team Obama played in any of the various shenanigans Gov. Blagojevich is accused of committing — or any others we don’t yet know about.

We have at least one Senior White House Correspondent who is doing his job!

INC on December 9, 2008 at 9:58 PM

Cindy Munford on December 9, 2008 at 9:13 PM

Exactly!!
They did a full court press to make sure that Wright/Trinity,where Obama spent 20 yrs.,wrote a book based on his experiences there, considered Wright his “mentor and moral compass”,pictured together in expos e’s in many Newspapers and magazines, and quoted many times in speech’s and interviews, was nothing but a distraction.
Obama had no idea it was a church based on a racist Black liberation theology and that Wright was a crazy bigot spouting propaganda and lies from the pulpit.

He had no idea what Rezko was up to.

He had no problem with Ayers being a marxist terrorist that wants to overthrow the American government.Hardly knew the
guy he served on two boards with and started his political campaign in his living room.

No idea what the governor of Chicago was up to while he helped him so much to get elected and Axelrod worked for him.

As hard as liberals and their friends in the MSM worked to create scandal after scandal, investigation after investigation, push conspiracy theory after conspiracy theory on Bush, they will spin, defend, and outright ignore the corruption and criminal/radical ties to Obama.

Welcome to Pravda West.

Baxter Greene on December 9, 2008 at 10:10 PM

I say this as a strong Obama supporter and Illinois resident.
AWESOME! Believe me, Democrats in this state are rejoicing. I didn’t vote for Blago in either election and I have watched dismayed as he has demonstrated himself as one of the most corrupt, pig headed and IDIOTIC governor’s in the states history. Those who want to blame Obama for this are those who already don’t like Obama. Patrick Fitzgerald is a good man and he would not care about the transition if he had evidence of Obama’s wrongdoing. The Keating 5 scandal only involved McCain because the democrats did not want it to be seen as a “democratic scandal”.This was admitted by a democrat on the committee:

In fact, it’s likely that McCain was only kept in the case because to have removed him from it would have meant only Democrats would have been involved. That’s not McCain spin, that’s from Bob Bennett, the Senate’s own investigator and noted Democrat.
“It was clear that McCain should not have been at the table nor should Glenn,”
Bennett said. “I felt it was unfair for McCain to be included as part of the Keating Five.” Bennett stressed that he was not speaking as part of the campaign, though he noted he also represented McCain in his recent battles with the New York Times.

McCain even went so far as to kick the guy out of his office.

http://www.weeklystandard.com/weblogs/TWSFP/2008/10/mccain_campaign_on_keating_a_c.asp

Dowd said that when McCain “discovered that Keating was pushing too hard, he kicked him out of his office and cut off relations with him.” Dowd suspects that the committee kept up its investigation for political reasons since McCain was the only Republican senator under investigation, calling it “a classic political smear job on John.” A 1995 New York Times article concurs with that assessment:

During the Keating Five scandal, committee Democrats resisted dropping the case against John McCain, the Arizona Republican, because that would have left only Democrats accused of improper dealings with Charles Keating, the savings and loan executive.

This is kept alive by liberals so that they can throw it out every time they get caught in their corruption and lies.
When a liberal rag like the NY times even admits that McCain was brought into this mess for political cover,it’s time to give McCain his just due,100% not guilty.

We have at least one Senior White House Correspondent who is doing his job!

Tapper’s the man. It always seems like he at tries to play it straight down the middle. If he knocks you, you probably had it coming. Here’s hoping he stays after it.

meltenn on December 9, 2008 at 10:29 PM

INC, that latest Tapper post is excellent.

As of now, the lack of answers from Team Obama is all we have. Obama sources say the silence is for two reasons: 1) this is a criminal investigation and they want to be careful about what they’re allowed to say, and 2) they want to talk to everyone, make sure they know just who spoke to whom, and then be able to give one definitive answer with no subsequent shoes dropping.

They’re going to perjur themselves, you watch. There’s no way they can coordinate this. If they try, they’ll make it way worse. Just ask Bill Clinton.

The Messiah’s all-too-quick denial indicates, to me at least, that he DID speak to Blego, exactly as Axe said he did.

That all-too-quick denial was also riddled with stammering uh’s, a real tell when OhBummer is skirting the truth, shall we say.

Meanwhile an SFGate AP story has a lede about the Blago and Harris arrests that asserts (I kid you not!) that the Illinois governor’s scandal will be a “distraction” to Obama while he is shaping up his transitional work—not that THE ONE has anything to do with the scandal, mind you

“His heart is in Chicago…” There’s a song there somewhere.

All this talk about diversity makes me want to go to bed.

Aronne on December 9, 2008 at 10:51 PM

Hilarity? Blago ran on an anti-corruption ticket! HA! I am psyched about his downfall.

DeathToMediaHacks on December 9, 2008 at 10:10 PM

This is also hilarious:

“Obama said today the men had not spoken.

An open question: When they last spoke.

UPDATE: Axelrod says the same in a statement:

I was mistaken when I told an interviewer last month that the President-elect has spoken directly to Governor Blagojevich about the Senate vacancy. They did not then or at any time discuss the subject.”

ddrintn on December 9, 2008 at 10:52 PM

This sounds like the lines in the old CLUE MOVIE–”Was it yes meaning no–nobody else is in the house? Or was it yes meaning yes–someone else is in the house?”
***
It is easier to always tell the truth or to keep your mouth shut than it is to lie convincingly. There are too many things to keep straight in your campaign or public statements to get away with lying all the time. And there are too many video recordings of what everyone said at different times.
***
However, this doesn’t mean anything as far as Axelrod and Obama are concerned. It’s great when the Left Wing Media (not MSM) keeps flying their excellent air cover for the Messiah. And most of the people in the country confuse too easily to tell the difference between lies and truth.
***
Pretty soon their will be a flood of other LWM stories to cover up this one–more “Scooter Libby”, “Carl Rove”, “Sarahcuda moose / turkey cruelty” stuff.

Funniest thing all day – I liked this part the best

“never saw in my life. EVER.”

Entelechy on December 9, 2008 at 10:57 PM

Politoco link from the last update:

“I was mistaken when I told an interviewer last month that the President-elect has spoken directly to Governor Blagojevich about the Senate vacancy. They did not then or at any time discuss the subject.”

According to Rep. Rahm Emanuel, D-Ill., Mr. Obama’s incoming White House chief of staff, Emanuel, then-state senator Obama, a third Blagojevich aide, and Blagojevich’s campaign co-chair, David Wilhelm, were the top strategists of Blagojevich’s 2002 gubernatorial victory.

An Obama Transition Team aide emails to note that Emanuel later changed his recollection of this story to Rich Miller’s “CAPITOL FAX,” saying, “David [Wilhelm] and I have worked together on campaigns for decades. Like always, he’s right and I’m wrong.”

Alot of backtracking and clarifying after the fact.

“If I received information that made me believe that any Democrat had not been acting in the public interest, I’d be concerned,” Obama said. [Chicago Daily Herald in July 2006]

That said, Mr. Obama said, “If the governor asks me to work on his behalf, I’ll be happy to do it.”

Apparently the governor did. At the Illinois State Fair in August 2006, Obama spoke on Blagojevich’s behalf.

We’ve got a governor in Rod Blagojevich who has delivered consistently on behalf of the people of Illinois,” Obama told the crowd.

Is this going to be the next “inartful” quote to be retracted?

geckomon on December 9, 2008 at 11:02 PM

2) they want to talk to everyone, make sure they know just who spoke to whom, and then be able to give one definitive answer with no subsequent shoes dropping

So that the cover up is not worse than the crime?

In those foul-ridden tapes of Blago, did anyone else catch the fact that the Illinois governor was expecting a federal job or at least one in a union?

onlineanalyst on December 9, 2008 at 11:04 PM

Also on the incriminating Blago tapes is the threat to fire all of the Trib’s editorial staff for any deal to progress. Is silencing the press part of the Chicago way? Is this the kind of “transparent” administration that can further expect in the WH come January?

BTW “Misspoke” means uh-oh, I never should have said that.

onlineanalyst on December 9, 2008 at 11:10 PM

On stories like these, this is about the time the press would go into overdrive and pound President Bush on the front pages, news conferences, talk shows…etc..etc..about the specifics, the what, where’s and when’s.

If the primaries and election are any indication of how they will treat their chosen one, expect to see defense after defensive spin coming from the press like they did with Wright,Ayers, guns, taxes, and his stance against the war.

It will be real interesting to compare this to how they treated Bush over the Plame/Wilson affair when there were no links to Bush what-so-ever and the leaker ended up being Armitage.

Baxter Greene on December 9, 2008 at 6:50 PM

Like many people have already noted, the defensive spin has
already begun.
The Obama camp has already been caught in a lie(Obama:I didn’t talk to him. Axelrod: Obama has talked to him about the candidates)
A man that Obama and Axelrod help get elected and who Obama
worked with for years is not going to be the “Blagojevich
that he knew”.

AP Goes Ahead and Calls Blagojevich a ‘Distraction’ for Obama

http://www.weeklystandard.com/weblogs/TWSFP/2008/12/ap_goes_ahead_and_calls_blagoj.asp

No need to wait for Obama to frame the issue when the Associated Press knows his favorite words already. They are great students of his oratory, after all:

Though Barack Obama isn’t accused of anything, the charges against his home-state governor – concerning Obama’s own Senate seat no less – are an unwelcome distraction. And the ultimate fallout is unclear.

As Obama works to set up his new administration and deal with a national economic crisis, suddenly he also is spending time and attention trying to distance himself from Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich and charges that the governor was trying to sell the now-vacant Senate post.

And, again, just a few paragraphs later, after a vigorous defense of Obama and a rigorous downplaying of his connections to Blago:

Still, at the very least, the episode amounts to a distraction for Obama at an inopportune time just six weeks before he’s sworn into office. It also raises the specter of notorious Chicago politics, an image Obama has tried to distance himself from during his career.

Could these liberal hacks be anymore corrupt and predictable.

Pravda West in action.
