Fitzgerald: Blagojevich engaged in “a political corruption crime spree”; Update: What did Team Obama know? Update: Did Rahm sink Blago?

“A truly new low,” he calls it, and after eight minutes of dramatic readings you won’t disagree. The absolute lowlight? Blago trying to shake down a children’s hospital for a $50,000 kickback in exchange for $8 million in state funding. Nice guy, lovely family.
Said an FBI agent of Illinois at the presser, “If it isn’t the most corrupt state in the United States, it’s certainly one hell of a competitor.” Indeed: George Ryan, Blagojevich’s predecessor, is also in prison, and only three of the last seven governors have managed to escape indictment. They’re long overdue for a reform candidate, but who could they get? They’d need someone from the area, preferably with a national profile, whose reputation for putting law and order above partisan politics is impeccable. Anyone you know fit the bill?
Update: The good news for The One? There’s no evidence that he or his team did anything improper. The bad news? There’ll have to be some investigating now to make sure. Tapper:
The (allegedly) corrupt Governor was sure that PEBO would NOT participate in Blago’s alleged sale of PEBO’s Senate seat by providing something of worth to Blago in exchange for his naming PEBO’s presumably first choice for the seat, friend and adviser Valerie Jarrett.
How did he know that? With whom on the Obama Team was Blago talking? How was the refusal to “pay or play” conveyed? Did that person then report Blago to the authorities?
And Michael Scherer at Time:
That’s the reason that the fall of Gov. Rod Blagojevich is going to continue to haunt Obama, not to mention Chicago’s Democratic establishment where he built his roots. The President of the United States has a higher burden than just about any elected official anywhere. His staff will be called on by the press to account for all their conversations with Blagojevich and his aides. Obama will have to explain what he knew about these discussions. The bit players in the indictment, like the unnamed Senate Candidate 1 and Senate Candidate 5, will have to come forward and explain their involvement. If the investigation continues into next year, which seems likely, there may even be calls for the appointment of something like an independent counsel at the Justice Department to avoid any hint of political interference. Obama’s staff and political allies may be forced to get attorneys of their own.
Update: Dick Durbin evidently wants a special election to fill the seat, to obviate the incredible awkwardness that would come with Blago potentiall appointing Obama’s successor from a jail cell.
Update: Did Rahm pull the plug?
We did receive a tip this morning that perhaps all of this came together so quickly because the Governor may have reached out to Rahm Emanuel, the president-elect’s chief of staff, in attempting to leverage filling the Senate seat. And it may have been Rahm Emanuel who tipped the scale and made this move as quickly as it did.
That would jibe with Ben Smith’s theory earlier, that Blago’s attempts to sell the seat to Obama and Valerie Jarrett became far too brazen for comfort.

It’s politics, as usual, and when the People have given up hope in any “representative” form of government, the path to tyranny is open.
It seems like the politicians in our country keep getting more and more corrupt, and it’s going to take a toll on whether or not the People will even give a damn about our government.
The more the People just want to throw up their hands in despair, the closer America will come to collapse. The People will just quit caring, because they are powerless to stop the corruption.

See if we can get former Senator Peter Fitzgerald, the man that appointed Patrick Fitzgerald and voted against an airline bailout in 2001, to come out of retirement and run in 2010. He will be viewed as a principaled reformer and lives far enough away from Chicago to not be viewed as a C(r)ook County politician.

This is the machine/swamp that produced Obama. Everything he learned about day to day politics from community organizer-foot soldier- all the way to the US Senate he learned in Illinois, specifically at the fountainhead-Chicago.
DC should be a snap for him. His New New Deal, nothing but a layup. He knows how to grease the skids and get things done.
Tell Hillary to stop fantasizing. Even if Obama was selling the seat himself he will be sworn in. The social chaos is not worth the trouble.

The expectation is that Obama will follow in Clinton’s path and fire all the U.S. Attorneys for districts around the country when he takes office, though the folks over at NRO speculate that this will force Obama to keep Fitzgerald in office after Jan. 20.
That’s open to question, given the national media’s fawning over Barack. If he fired Fitzgerald, the Chicago media might raise a stink, but odds are the national press would either completely look the other way, or say Fitz probably botched the Plame leak case intentionally — because how could you not indict Karl Rove or Dick Cheney — and is obviously a closet Republican due to the timing of the Blogojevich indictment, and therefore deserves to be fired.

I live in Illinois, and always felt like my vote was wasted because being a republican means I am in a small minority. Peter Fitzgerald left the system because he believed the system could not be fixed. The people of IL believe the system cannot be fixed. If you could somehow convince the two, I’d be all for it. Fitzgerald for Gov.? I’d jump on that bandwagon in a heartbeat.
As for Pat Fitzgerald, Hopenchange had better keep him in. Otherwise, there won’t be much hope for change here in IL.

Yeah it seems like a investigation has been in the works for a while. But the most damning stuff comes from Blagoj from trying to sell Obama’s Senate seat. So one has to wonder if someone inside Obama’s campaign helped along the investigation?

Yeah, it would be too brazen for Lightworker to have to ‘pay’ someone who did him a political favor. After all, Lightworker has never had to earn much of anything.
You’re deluding yourself if you think that this is evidence of some ethical standards on Lightworker’s part. I think the more telling thing is that Blago thought he could get away with it. Why is that, I wonder?
Y-not on December 9, 2008 at 2:33 PM
I think a question not being asked is “What made Blagojevic even think he could get such a deal from Team Barry?”
I mean this was brazen as all hell, but he must have thought he at least had a chance to pull it off. What in their history led him to think that? Have there been prior attempts with state senator obama in which obama conceded?
I mean … I’m just asking questions here :P

Rahm has been around the block, he would recognize this in an instant and pull Obama out of the fire.
The one thing Rahm is, he is savvy and won’t get caught in this mess, and he may have saved Obama…all Obama would have to do is take a call and just listen.
He also has the power and will to take Obama by the back of his collar and march him out the door…
I suspect Rahm may end up being Obama savior…imagine the saviour being saved.
right2bright on December 9, 2008 at 2:38 PM
It would make sense, whether it was Rahm Emanuel or someone else. Obama’s people don’t want the ghosts of Illinois haunting them in the White House, and this sounds like an excellent way to neutralize a potential threat from Blago while simultaneously shielding Obama from involvement in the corruption back home.
In other words, Blago tried to sell the Senate seat to Obama (Valerie Jarrett) in exchange for an SEIU job and/or cash. Obama responded by selling Blago to the investigators in exchange for favors we’ll never fully hear about.
Bottom line: Obama walks away with clean hands. Expect any Rezko angle to be downplayed and ultimately dismissed.

I read the 21 pages posted on The Smoking Gun. Obama seems to have wanted to keep the deal one step removed from him by offering Blago Change to Win. Blago tried to haggle and counter, then gats were drawn and the deal went south fast.

Rahmbo = Deep Throat in Le Affair Blago?
Dr.Cwac.Cwac on December 9, 2008 at 2:42 PM
Two things —
The Black Caesar didn’t become a State Senator and then a US Senator from Illinois by being ignorant or out of the loop on the corruption that is SOP there. They pulled this nonsense when Obama told us that he didn’t realize what hatred Wright was spewing for the 20 years he was in the congregation. Obama knew what was going on and Rahm, being the pitbull he is, knew that they needed to bring this d-bag Blago down fast before Barry’s replacement was selected.
Second, Valerie Jarrett was born in Iran. Soon to be POTUS born in Indonesia and his most trusted confidante in Chicago being born in Iran. Hmmm, what exactly are these muslims up to?
grdred944 on December 9, 2008 at 2:46 PM
LOL. If it was, he did it to immunize his new boss against the splash. “Stand up guy” probably doesn’t describe Rahm accurately. Remember, he and Blago came out of the same machine. I’d say Rahm saw an opportunity and acted on it. He knew Blago was going down anyway,…..may as well make Barry look as good as possible in the process.

When I saw Jarrett on the stage with Obama as part of this economic team I wondered what was up since she was said to be Obama’s pick for replacement.
Seems like it went something like:
Obama to Blago … appoint Jarrett.
Blago to Obama … what ya gonna give me?
Obama to Blago … my appreciation.
Balgo to Obama … gonna cost more than that.
At that point Team Obama became part of the extortion if he didn’t go to the feds. And it seems to me that since it is reported Blago has been under investigation for up to 3 years now, seems logical that it was the Blago/Obama incident that caused the feds to pull the trigger on Blago.
Texas Gal on December 9, 2008 at 2:58 PM
I listened to Blago on Cavuto yesterday. He is nothing but a stupid thug. He was attempting to justify his state mandate of not doing biz w/Bank of America. He sounded like a baffoon.
Anyway, his idiocy is on display for the whole country to see now. He knew that someone was leaking, yet he kept talking and influence peddling and playing his pay for play scam b/c that is SOP in Chicago. It would never occur to this guy that this is ILLEGAL and isn’t tolerated in the rest of America.
What do we make of our new president having been raised in this environment? This is how Illinois operates. This is how Illinois politicians operate. This is how Obama will operate as POTUS?
