Feds arrest Illinois Gov. Blagojevich for trying to sell Obama’s vacant Senate seat; Update: Wanted cash to appoint Obama crony?

posted at 10:46 am on December 9, 2008 by Allahpundit

“Staggering.”

On the issue of the U.S. Senate selection, federal prosecutors alleged Blagojevich sought appointment as Secretary of Health and Human Services in the new Obama administration, or a lucrative job with a union in exchange for appointing a union-preferred candidate.

Blagojevich and Harris conspired to demand the firing of Chicago Tribune editorial board members responsible for editorials critical of Blagojevich in exchange for state help with the sale of Wrigley Field, the Chicago Cubs baseball stadium owned by Tribune Co.

Blagojevich and Harris, along with others, obtained and sought to gain financial benefits for the governor, members of his family and his campaign fund in exchange for appointments to state boards and commissions, state jobs and state contracts.

“The breadth of corruption laid out in these charges is staggering,” U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald said in a statement.

Fitzmas arrives early this year. I haven’t followed the Blago saga, but it’s as old as Hot Air is: The investigation’s been active for three years and his cronies have been rolling over on him for months, culminating in a former aide named John Wyma having somehow cooperated with the feds to obtain recordings of Blagojevich yakking about graft. (The Tribune, which broke the news, won’t say if he wore a wire.) Another top crony was convicted six months ago of mail fraud, among other things, but his sentencing was postponed from October to January amid rumors that he was singing to the U.S. Attorney about the Chicago machine in hopes of a better deal. You might have heard of him.

CBS2 Chicago has highlights from the FBI affidavit; trust me when I say it’s the most entertaining train-wreck news curio you’ll read this morning. A taste:

Throughout the intercepted conversations, Blagojevich also allegedly spent significant time weighing the option of appointing himself to the open Senate seat and expressed a variety of reasons for doing so, including: frustration at being “stuck” as governor; a belief that he will be able to obtain greater resources if he is indicted as a sitting Senator as opposed to a sitting governor; a desire to remake his image in consideration of a possible run for President in 2016; avoiding impeachment by the Illinois legislature; making corporate contacts that would be of value to him after leaving public office; facilitating his wife’s employment as a lobbyist; and generating speaking fees should he decide to leave public office…

In a conversation with Harris on November 11, the charges state, Blagojevich said he knew that the President-elect wanted Senate Candidate 1 for the open seat [This is certainly Valerie Jarrett. -- AP] but “they’re not willing to give me anything except appreciation. [Expletive] them.”

As recently as December 4, in separate conversations with Advisor B and Fundraiser A, Blagojevich said that he was “elevating” Senate Candidate 5 on the list of candidates because, among other reasons, if Blagojevich ran for re-election, Senate Candidate 5 would “raise[] money” for him. Blagojevich said that he might be able to cut a deal with Senate Candidate 5 that provided Blagojevich with something “tangible up front.”

Here’s vid of Blago yesterday inviting the world to tape his phone calls and sounding very sincere indeed. Exit question one: Did this guy actually approach Team Barry with some sort of graft proposal to get Jarrett appointed? E.g., “Make me HHS Secretary if you want her in”? Exit question two: Who’s Senate Candidate 5, whom Blagojevich thought might be willing to offer something “tangible” up front?

Update: Meet the man who’ll be dealing with Senate Candidate 5 now. A belated thought: Is this the single dumbest racket ever attempted by a major politician? He knew the U.S. Attorney was investigating him, he knew he couldn’t trust his cronies — and yet he was still willing to talk openly about selling a seat in the United States Senate?

Update: Politico reads Blago’s statement that he wanted “something real good” and “valuable” in return for appointing Jarrett as a suggestion that he was hitting up the Obama campaign for cash. I’m not sure where they’re getting that; it could just as easily mean an appointment of some kind, which probably wouldn’t be illegal so far as I know. This bit from the complaint is interesting, though:

HARRIS said they could work out a three-way deal with SEIU and the President-elect where SEIU could help the President-elect with ROD BLAGOJEVICH’s appointment of Senate Candidate 1 to the vacant Senate seat, ROD BLAGOJEVICH would obtain a position as the National Director of the Change to Win campaign, and SEIU would get something favorable from the President-elect in the future.

We’ll have to wait until next Fitzmas, I guess, to find out if they ever went to Team Barry with this idea.

Update: Unsurprisingly, Blago suddenly appears to be a man without a party.

Update: Blagojevich’s approval rating as of mid-October was … four percent. No typo.

Update: An intriguing theory from Ben Smith: Did Team Barry yank Jarrett out of contention for the Senate seat because Blago approached them with an improper offer? CNN reported on November 9 that she was The One’s choice to replace him; just a day later, he’d suddenly decided that he wanted her with him in the White House after all.

Update: Ambinder speculates that Senate Candidate 5 is Jesse Jackson Jr.

Update: The Smoking Gun thinks Senate Candidate 5 is actually Illinois State Rep. Emil Jones.

I wouldn’t hold coming from a corrupt state against Obama if he had ever proven in the past that he had fought corruption or blew the whistle on it or took a stance against his own party’s corrupt political machine… as, say, another politician from a notoriously corrupt state has done in her career.

I haven’t read all the comments, so forgive me if this has been said.
I think they’ll spin it as “proof” that Obama is a reformer since he wouldn’t play ball with Blago. They’ll say that he sounds mad at Obama and that’s because “Obama’s not corrupt” and like that. Then they’ll extend the whole thing to Rezco and they’ll say that Obama was surrounded by corruption and didn’t succumb and it all proves that he is, indeed, a messiah. Of course, the media will push this to the hilt with the whole “look what this brave, honest man had to put up with and he overcame that…what an American hero” and so forth

The most serious problem the country and the economy has isn’t UAW members, greedy banks or inept CEOs, the problem is the bloated, entitled and widely corrupt public payroll.

You are right, don’t let the Truthers take you down the road of hope and change that some how after all is said and done – Palin becomes the presidents. LOL

This all came out now obviously after the election for a very good reason. There is nothing there with regard to Obama.

But we will be hearing all kind of conjecture and wishful thinking throughout this thread. Just like the birth certificate thread.

And one person, Josef, has suggested praying that McCain become the president. More wishful thinking.

Now how could that possibly happen? If anything it would be Biden.

I think Obama may have known about this bust and may have been behnd it. Throughout the tapes the governor is calling Obama all kinds of expletives, saying thinks about Obama like “this **** isn’t getting the Senator that he wants, he’s getting who I pick etc.

Sorry Allah, you’ve obviously underestimated the wily governor’s intelligence:

Blagojevich allegedly told Fundraiser A to tell Individual D that if Senate Candidate 5 is going to be chosen, “some of this stuff’s gotta start happening now . . . right now . . . and we gotta see it.” Blagojevich continued, “You gotta be careful how you express that and assume everybody’s listening, the whole world is listening. You hear me?” Blagojevich further directed Fundraiser A to talk to Individual D in person, not by phone, and to communicate the “urgency” of the situation. Barry pulled the trigger on this guy now because he knows the rest of the Rezko mess is due to hit the fan and it is much better for him if this scumbag takes the fall for all of it.

grdred944 on December 9, 2008 at 12:16 PM

Sounds about right. Barry then gets to wear the cape of a reformer and immunizes himself. Blago’s cussing him out in the transcripts is the perfect opportunity to wear the white sombrero.

What a surprise, corrupt politics in Illinois. Round up the usual suspects.

Don’t forget, it’s allegedly guilty as hell.

Kinda like Barry allegedly worked on the Foundation with William Ayers. LOL

Can you say “President Joe Biden” ?

Ugh

…and the folks who brought him down will hopefully pay by needing to search for a new job.

Apparantly this Governor was calling Obama some pretty nasty names in those tapes…I am curious to know what the actual words that are being bleeped out are.

AprilOrit on December 9, 2008 at 12:08 PM

I wouldn’t know why. Obviously Obama never ever even knew this miscreant. Nope.

That’s what I was thinking as well.

If all they’ve got on Obama (that the press is willing to cover) is that Obama refused to play ball with Blago, Obama comes out of this smelling like a rose.

I honestly hope he is a rose in all this. It would be fantastic if he really weren’t corrupt and he really did work towards the best interest of the country. If that’s the case, he can be reasoned with.

I, for purposes of biological necessity, won’t hold my breath that this is the case, but, I certainly hope it is.

I’d just laugh my ass off at what a total fustercluck the “first black” POTUS has made of history. What a way to be remembered.

Here. I brought you a soda. I guess when Nan went to the Plastic Surgeon, she asked for the “deer in the headlights” look.

So, he was trying to sell the seat for a Union job? Nope. No corruption here. Not at all.

kingsjester on December 9, 2008 at 12:42 PM

If this press conference goes on any longer, they’re going to need a thesaurus and a barf bucket for the speaker to properly express himself.

forest on December 9, 2008 at 12:43 PM

We should put the vacant seat on eBay…

HornetSting on December 9, 2008 at 12:40 PM

No, I think that it is Jan Schakowsk. I think that she’s Senate Candidate #5 based on her comments defending Blago on the local news. The Jacksons would be offended that someone is extorting them rather than the other way around.

If Blagojevich thought he could get all this , he expected business as usual . It’s impossible that clean people suddenly goes that corrupt , unless it’s Palin stealing clothes..

The national media is still in the middle of such a sheet-tearing Obamagasm, it wouldn’t matter. I have a feeling though that one day when someone sifts through all that is Obama, there is a monster scandal waiting to be discovered.
