Card Check: a direct pipeline to corruption and abuse; Update: Stern?; Update: Guess who was Blago’s biggest donor?

posted at 3:11 pm on December 9, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Unions expect the Obama administration and the Democratic Congress to pass the Employee Free Choice Act within the first few months of 2009.  They claim that employees can’t organize effectively with a requirement to use secret ballots in organizing elections.  After this revelation from the indictment against Rod Blagojevich, the largest public-sector union in the US certainly looks untrustworthy with that kind of power:

On November 12, 2008, ROD BLAGOJEVICH spoke with SEIU Official, who was in Washington, D.C. Prior intercepted phone conversations indicate that approximately a week before this call, ROD BLAGOJEVICH met with SEIU Official to discuss the vacant Senate seat, and ROD BLAGOJEVICH understood that SEIU Official was an emissary to discuss Senate Candidate 1’s interest in the Senate seat. During the conversation with SEIU Official on November 12, 2008, ROD BLAGOJEVICH informed SEIU Official that he had heard the President-elect wanted persons other than Senate Candidate 1 to be considered for the Senate seat.

SEIU Official stated that he would find out if Senate Candidate 1 wanted SEIU Official to keep pushing her for Senator with ROD BLAGOJEVICH. ROD BLAGOJEVICH said that “one thing I’d be interested in” is a 501(c)(4) organization. ROD BLAGOJEVICH explained the 501(c)(4) idea to SEIU Official and said that the 501(c)(4) could help “our new Senator [Senate Candidate 1].” SEIU Official agreed to “put that flag up and see where it goes.”

110. On November 12, 2008, ROD BLAGOJEVICH talked with Advisor B. ROD BLAGOJEVICH told Advisor B that he told SEIU Official, “I said go back to [Senate Candidate 1], and, and say hey, look, if you still want to be a Senator don’t rule this out and then broach the idea of this 501(c)(4) with her.”

Let’s just put this in perspective.  The largest public-sector union — the one that works most closely with governments — has officials in it that see nothing wrong with bribing public officials to get their preferred Senate candidate into office through a corrupt appointment.   If Blago’s arrest reflects poorly on Illinois state government, then the involvement of this SEIU official says volumes about the way workers there and everywhere else get represented and organized, as well as how their union dues get used.

If they’re willing to flat-out bribe a governor, they’ll be happy to use Card Check to intimidate workers into unions and increase their dues.  They’ll then use those dues to buy more politicians, just as we see in this indictment.  Card Check is nothing more than a Trojan horse to fund corruption and abuse on the largest possible scale.

The Department of Justice needs to start investigating the SEIU’s activities now.  Meanwhile, we need to remain firm against the EFCA.  The secret ballot is all that will stand between corruption and its lifeblood.

Previous posts on Card Check:

Update: Ben Smith reports that the SEIU official left unnamed in the charges is none other than its president, Andy Stern:

A Democratic source confirms that SEIU President Andy Stern is the “SEIU official” referred to in the federal complaint against Rod Blagojevich.

There’s no allegation that the SEIU official did anything wrong, and what appears to be a wiretap transcript has the official reacting non-commitally to Blagojevich’s offer of a quid pro quo. Another Democratic source tells me that Stern was been in Chicago November 3 meeting with Blagojevich, a discussion thought to have included talk about the Senate seat — though that meeting isn’t mentioned in the complaint.

Maybe it’s time for a RICO investigation into the SEIU.

Update II: Along those lines, the National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation shows why Stern would have been consulted by Blagojevich:

Our research today indicates that Andy Stern’s SEIU has been Blagojevich’s biggest financial backer for years. According go the Illinois Sunshine Database, the SEIU Illinois Council PAC was the governor’s top contributor in his re-election effort, giving $908,382 in the 2005-2006 cycle. That same cycle, PACs for the Laborers and Teamsters unions, also Change to Win partners, were also among Blagojevich’s top 15 contributors.

The relationship between Blagojevich and the SEIU’s political fundraising arms go back years. In his first gubernatorial election in 2002, the SEIU PEA International gave his campaign $821,294, making the PAC his second largest contributor that cycle (the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee had contributed $900,000 to the then-Congressman).

All told, union PACs poured more than $8 million into Blagojevich’s two gubernatorial campaign coffers.

Pay to play, baby.  Pay to play.  Blago apparently wanted to make sure he squeezed them for all he could before letting go of this gold mine of an opportunity.

In the wake of the Blago Fiasco, I’m willing to bet Obama will throw Card Check under the bus.

This is right near the top of the list on things about Obama that scare me. I’m pretty pleased with him since the election, but this… not so much.

Let’s get Rasmussen to do a poll, and see if Americans want a do over election.

Jimmy Hoffa is trying to squirm out of his cement bed and get back in the action even as we speak….

It’s a “perfect storm:” hideously corrupt unions uniting with the most corrupt Congress — and corrupt President — in modern times.

Still not enough. Blago and card check Foggy Bottom and much of what else is yet to come, wouldn’t have mattered to those who recently elected Obama. He didn’t win because the list of strikes against him wasn’t long enough. To attack him is to attack the symptom of the disease–comforting, but still leaves you ill.

So the union wants to know,by the way of, how you voted,
is kinda like,crudely mind you,

who you voted for,like;

If you used the biffy blues,

what stall,lid up or down,

No.1 or No.2

how long was the use,

did you wash your hands,if so,

which sink,cold or hot water,

1 Sq. or how many feet, and

if you talked in the bathroom,

what was your conversation,what

did the other person say!

Card Check=Orwellian!(Snark!).

With you all the way, except the National Education Association is the largest public sector union – in fact, the largest union of any kind – not SEIU, and NEA has its own list of demands.

Mike Antonucci on December 9, 2008 at 3:39 PM

Obama wants Card Check. It will happen. One reason he is stocking his administration full of Clinton retreads is because they know how to get things done. There will be no on the job training for key people in Obama’s administration. They’ll carry out his policies, no matter how far left they are. And this one is high on the list.

Obama banked nearly $750B during the last campaign. It is not an option for him to say ‘no’ to the unions.

Unions are the problem because they left their original position of actually helping the little guy, the worker. If they would have stayed true to their original purpose there would not be the problems of today and there would be a greater membership….

The unions want card check, and without unions, the Democrats are nothing.

It won’t go under the bus, it will just go back on the shelf for a few months until Obama believes people have stopped looking.

The unions have always been monopolies, have always worked to lock newcomers out so that the good old boys can take it easy. There may be a few working conditions issues that they have helped as a side effect, but they have always been about extortion.

The Stern thing could be a red herring to take the heat away from Anna Burger or someone close to her.

It mentions both the SEIU and Change to Win in the complaint and she is hooked into both of them.

Other names being bandied about include:

• Illinois State Senate president Emil Jones, who was an early Chicago mentor of Obama’s and is an ally of Blagojevich’s.
• Former Chicago city councilman and current U.S. Congressman Danny Davis.
• Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White. White, Jones, and Davis are all black.
• Tammy Duckworth, an Iraq veteran who ran for election to the United States Congress in 2006 and lost. She’s currently Blagojevich’s Secretary for Veteran’s Affairs.
• Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan.
• U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky, who is the Chief Deputy Whip and a former Illinois assemblywoman.

They might be trying to draw the heat off Burger because she is one of the top advisors of the Obama transition team.

The Department of Justice needs to start investigating the SEIU’s activities now.

Amen.
And Obama needs to explain his relationship with them right now. He’s made such a big deal about not allowing lobbyists on his transition team, and he’s got Stern brokering deals for him?

The SEIU was a major backer of the YearlyKos and Netroot Nation conventions.
The left blogs have been writing in strong support of card check.
The SEIU was a major fundraiser for Obama.
Now we find out Andy Stern was working as an emissary for Valerie Jarret.
And, according to Obama, neither Stern nor Jarrett told him that Blagojevich was trying to ‘buy’ a Senate seat from them.

Obama needs to publicly rebuke Jarrett and Stern.

MayBee on December 9, 2008 at 4:35 PM

In related new B of A agreed to lend enough to Republic Windows to pay off the union sitting out at the company.

The announced their decision after Blagojevich was arrested. They are doing it for PR now, not because of Blagojevich. In fact, taking him out of it probably made it easier for them to do it (it doesn’t look like they are bowing to political pressure).

MayBee on December 9, 2008 at 4:37 PM

Couldn’t have happened to a nicer sh*thead. Did you read the WSJ’s interview with Andy Stern on Dec. 6th?

Universal health care, widespread unionization, stronger regulations on business, profit-sharing for employees, higher taxes — all that sounds like Western Europe. Mr. Stern considers that a worthy model. “I think Western Europe as much as we used to make fun of it has made different trade-offs which may have ended up with a little more unemployment but a lot more equality.”

Again, perhaps channeling the old Wharton student within, he couches his pitch in business-friendly terms. “When you have universal health care, employers compete without health care being a competitive factor. When you have higher wages, people aren’t poor, they get to eat, they get to live a better life and have a social safety net. I also think that when CEOs don’t make as much money off of stock options they don’t make risky investments.” And does unionization improve competitiveness? It helps productivity, he counters, arguing that cheap labor, as in China, is a disincentive for industry to innovate and use workers efficiently.

Andy Stern’s ambition would seem to be nothing less than to remake American capitalism from the ground up. His union, and the labor movement, hasn’t had this good a chance to do so in a very long time.

JiangxiDad on December 9, 2008 at 4:39 PM

Commentguy: They’d look like they wanted revenge on losing the business of the Illinois government. They didn’t want the damage to spread further than that state – that would have happened if they pushed on Republic’s workers.

CommentGuy on December 9, 2008 at 5:14 PM

Just another reason to put the Big Three in Chapter 11. Think of it as draining the cesspool that organized labor has become. This is the primary reason that the Dems want to bail them out and are using the current economic crisis as cover to protect millions of dollars and votes.

Prior to this banking collapse the auto companies would have all gone into Chapter 11 and the Dems would have not been able to prevent it.

It is up to the Repub Senators now. I don’t think they have it in them to stop it. That is why they are the minority party and they will stay that way for a very long time to come. They no longer have any core beliefs about small government and fiscal restraint. They will make the usual excuses and vote for the bailout.

As I have said repeatedly these companies, with the possible exception of Ford, were headed to bankruptcy. The Dems/Obama are using the current crisis to rob the American taxpayer of billions of dollars to do two things–prop up their voter base and accelerate the nationalizing of our industries.

Prediction–Health-care and energy production will be next over the following eight years.

What is more telling is what Obama said to the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists in May of 2007:

”I know who brought me to the dance and I know who’s going to take me to the next dance,” Obama said.

”We’ve got to make the union movement stronger in this country,” he said. ”We need a president who doesn’t choke when he says the word union.”

Keemo on December 9, 2008 at 6:52 PM

Like I keep saying, the bloated, entitled and increasingly corrupt public wage roll harms the country far more than overpaid UAW workers, inept and greedy CEOs, or even Wall Street bankers.

In fact, one can see the hand of government with each of those groups of supposedly bad actors (Wagner Act, EPA, Fannie & Freddie). Part of the problem are our elected officials (Dodd, Frank, Shelby, Blagojevich), but a good deal of the problem are either caused or aggravated by public employees, both elected and otherwise.
