They got fooled again

Maybe everyone got fooled in this election. The Right believed as the Left did that the nation elected a man who would pull American policy in as sharply a liberal direction as anything since the Carter administration. After seeing most of Barack Obama’s selections for his Cabinet, however, the Left doesn’t get a sense of Carter deja vu as much as they detect a whiff of Bush:
Liberals are growing increasingly nervous – and some just flat-out angry – that President-elect Barack Obama seems to be stiffing them on Cabinet jobs and policy choices.
Obama has reversed pledges to immediately repeal tax cuts for the wealthy and take on Big Oil. He’s hedged his call for a quick drawdown in Iraq. And he’s stocking his White House with anything but stalwarts of the left.
Now some are shedding a reluctance to puncture the liberal euphoria at being rid of President George W. Bush to say, in effect, that the new boss looks like the old boss.
“He has confirmed what our suspicions were by surrounding himself with a centrist to right cabinet. But we do hope that before it’s all over we can get at least one authentic progressive appointment,” said Tim Carpenter, national director of the Progressive Democrats of America.
OpenLeft blogger Chris Bowers went so far as to issue this plaintive plea: “Isn’t there ever a point when we can get an actual Democratic administration?”
I wouldn’t go anywhere near that far. Democrats have all but one Cabinet appointment, although Bowers considered Defense a crown jewel for the Left. Hillary Clinton, Janet Napolitano, Bill Richardson, and Eric Holder all will have seats on Obama’s council, not one of them DINOs. Hillary Clinton even departed from her husband’s DLC positions on the campaign trail in a vain attempt to keep the nomination for herself.
Barack Obama himself has maintained the same economic populism that gained him the victory. His expansive (and expensive) public-works program comes right out of the liberal playbook, including its lack of funding. Where Obama has retreated economically, he has done so out of necessity. Oil now sells for a hundred dollars a barrel less than when he proposed those attacks on “Big Oil”. Only an ideologue would jack up taxes in the middle of the worst recession in decades. FDR and Hoover did that to disastrous results, and Obama doesn’t want to lose 100 seats in Congress in 2010.
However, on foreign policy, the Left has some basis for complaint. Instead of getting a foreign policy of which Zbigniew Brzezinski would be proud, Obama has become an apparent disciple of Brent Scowcroft and the Bush 41 administration. Gone are the plans for a Department of Peace, and instead Obama favors a projection of American power abroad, but under a more restrictive paradigm. The Right would prefer more John Bolton than Susan Rice, but otherwise their worst fears have gone mostly unrealized — depending on how much influence Samantha Power has over Hillary Clinton, which may be the most interesting internecine fight to watch in the first few months of the incoming administration.
During the election, Jim Geraghty and others of us warned voters that every Obama campaign position came with an expiration date. Maybe the Left should have paid more attention.
I’ll move myself and my family aside
If we happen to be left half alive
I’ll get all my papers and smile at the sky
For I know that the hypnotized never lie
Do ya?
YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!
There’s nothing in the street
Looks any different to me
And the slogans are replaced, by-the-bye
And the parting on the left
Is now the parting on the right
And the beards have all grown longer overnight …
Meet the new boss
Same as the old boss

The Cabinet appointments just show those areas in which Obama does not care to rule. He has delegated Defense, Foreign Relations, Justice, etc., to Clintonites, the only Dems he knows.
Still leaves him plenty of room in domestic affairs to wreak havoc, especially in the economy, where he will be trying to eliminate the capitalist system.

So Obama figured out that being Prez ain’t so easy, and that maybe Bush was doing the right thing.

As a real conservative, I’m not applauding here, I’m watching.
As Ed said, BHO doesn’t want to lose 100 seats in the House and I say maybe 15 seats on the Senate.
My concern is that he’s angling for his run in 2012. And if and when he he wins there, he’ll be impervious as he can’t run again.
Should we have a two term BHO, that would be the time I’d be very, very concerned.
Amendment X on December 8, 2008 at 11:55 AM
The only people getting fooled about Obama are those fooling themselves. Obama has won a mandate, but it’s one he’s not taking for granted. That’s why he’s not going to go and try to and shoot the moon with his electoral hand right off the bat, but will instead invest his political capital wisely in order to build the sort of political coalition that will accomplish significant and lasting change in American politics. Not unlike what Reagan did when he came into office and instead of being a conservative crusader actually cut deals with conservative Democrats in 1981 on taxes and even liberal Democrats in 1986 on tax reform.
starfleet_dude on December 8, 2008 at 11:56 AM
My wife and I are eagerly awaiting the exploding leftist heads around the world as he tacks further and further towards the center. We didn’t forecast it, mind you, as we were as concerned as anyone about his history and liberal voting record. In fact, we’re rather amazed so far. Not that I think Daschle and Holder are good appointees, but I’m not complaining too much about the rest (even Hillary). It may be an interesting couple of years! Anyone want to open an over/under line for when Olbermann loses it? That’s something I’d almost pay to watch.

stonemeister gets it too – it doesn’t matter what happens abroad when you have the world’s largest economy by the throat.

Don’t look at the headline pick for cabinet secretary. Look at the second tier party functionaries.
Don’t make any conclusions about the Obama administration until you get a chance to see what they, and the democrats in congress actually do with the power they now have.
Skandia Recluse on December 8, 2008 at 11:58 AM
All those developments are better than their left wing alternatives, maybe Obama wasn’t lying when he said he intended to govern in a bipartisan, middle of the road way. Thats why democrats won…not because this country went all left wing on everyone, but because he convinced those that ARENT far left wing (like myself) that he respected the idea that “neither party has a monopoly on wisdom” (which im convinced he actually stole from me with his secret service wiretaps on my dinner table political discussions…the bastard)

As Rove said, “The office changes the man, the man doesn’t change the office”.
That is why conservative, real conservative values, when laid out in a logical plain speak, is the answer.

The Black Caesar never cared about ideology. He wants to be seen as The Savior to the masses and is prepared to bankrupt the country in the process. $1.5 trillon on bridges and broadband? I didn’t expect the Chinese to own us for another 40 years but they may be able to get it done in 8.
grdred944 on December 8, 2008 at 12:03 PM
Anyone who thinks that allowing the nutroots a seat at the table, especially on foreign policy is crazy. As much as I’m concerned about Barry’s WPA redux and plans to socialize health care, I don’t think that the guy is crazy enough to create a Department of Peace or end the War on Terror.

The discomfort of the far left is delicious. Their incremental discovery that their messiah is nothing more than a common, dissembling politician from the Chicago machine is priceless.
It could be a longer four years for BHO than it will seem for us. The Dems had better start worrying about the 2010 midterms and the specter of a shattered platform and a god with feet of clay.

“Black Caesar” …. lol!
I’d always favored “Obamacles” but I might have to switch.
The nutroots have always been nothing more than the equivalent of gang members or street thugs. You don’t give those people power or authority, just the “prestige” of being members of the gang. They, like gang members, exceed their “place” in the gang by even suggesting their point of view should prevail.
I still don’t trust the Black Caesar (I DO like the sound of that!) but I don’t think he’s stupid. He’s appointing people he thinks will placate worried Republicans and reassure democrats. In other words, playing down the middle. The real test is not just in second-tier appointments but also in policy changes. Let’s see how long before his socialist tendencies float to the surface.

This at least is something the Federal Government should be doing, and there is a lot of infrastructure that is in bad need of replacing (check out any report on the state of bridges in the U.S.). I would much rather see this than something like the No Child Left Behind crap Bush was so focused on before 9/11, which is clearly not part of the enumerated powers of the Federal Government. I am not going to complain when Obama’s plans involve things the Federal Government should be involved in.
Investment in infrastructure is one of the very few things the Federal Government can do that has a chance of boosting the economy.

Time for obligatory reminder that the credo of Chicago politics is “Don’t make no waves, don’t back no losers.” Obama is following the script to the letter. Like many skeptics I think he will pursue moderate policies until a second term when he has a healthy economy to play with. I have come to think that on foreign policy he was just bashing Bush out of expediency knowing that the press will follow his lead as he moves back to the mainstream on national security. On the other hand, Christopher Buckley could be right. His Ivy League education will lead to the conclusion that leftwing solutions won’t work and he will then abandon his childish notions.

Will more efficient roadways allow the free-market to create enough wealth to pay for the massive interest payments, let alone the cost of these programs? It is not like in the 50’s when you had no Interstate system.
If they cannot make the case that these programs will bolster the free-market they are makework bribes to construction companies and just more transfers of wealth from those who pay taxes to those who are not.

I’m with Amendment X on Obama being low key the first four years. If he gets another four look out, nothing to lose, everything to gain, he could tear this country up big time. He’s a sneaky kind of guy so I suspect this to be true. He’s obsessed with power and the transference of power and wealth from the majority rule.

Maybe it’s all too much – he really doesn’t know what to do, despite his campaign PR to the contrary. Of course it all depends on the details. Some roads need building, some roads are political paybacks. However, there are lots of bridges in the U.S. that are in serious need of maintenance. Until I see details that this is just political payoff I am not going to start criticizing this. At least these plans stick within the Federal Governments enumerated powers, unlike many, many, so called fixes purposed recently. The fact is that there is infrastructure that needs building and upgrading, if Obama builds/upgrades that infrastructure let’s not attack it because he is of the wrong party. Now if what gets built falls under massive government waste, let’s all attack him for wasting government money. Either way I am in favor for withholding judgment on this until more details are available.

What FDR did during the Great Depression was hardly an investment in infrastructure. It was make work projects as you stated, big difference.
The last truly big Federal Government investment in public infrastructure was the Dwight D. Eisenhower National System of Interstate and Defense Highways, I.E. the interstate highway system. This system of roadways has been an economic driver in many, many ways, and did boost local, state, and national economies. However, much of the highway system has not been maintained adequately and is a terrible state of disrepair. It needs fixing and upgrading.
There are certain types of infrastructure helpful for business that only the Federal Government can provide, and done right provides a huge boost to the economy. Transportation and utility services would not be possible without government involvement as they are needed to condemn the land required for this type of infrastructure. While this power can and is abused, it is still necessary for government to be involved in infrastructure development. Also, this is one of the few things I’ve heard the Federal Government purpose recently that is actually in the Enumerated Powers, so it is actually the Federal Governments constitutional duty to provide this kind of service. This is opposed to FDR’s unconstitutional make work harebrained ideas enacted during the Great Depression.
While I don’t wish any suffering on you, it might make your life easier if you were a bit less angry and actually had a clue.
Buford on December 8, 2008 at 3:07 PM

Godefroi on December 8, 2008 at 4:22 PM
I wouldn’t trust ZerObama yet to govern as a centrist, because he has said that the “vision” for his administration would come from…himself. It depends on whether the blind man (Obama) relies on his seeing-eye dogs (his Cabinet) or fires them when they don’t follow the Vision of the One. In the latter case, the whole country gets thrown under the bus, which Obama doesn’t see coming.
It’s possible that Obama got scared into reality when he started getting intelligence and national-security briefings from the Bush Administration–”Gee whiz, by golly these dictators ARE dangerous, what if they are not convinced by my sweet words of peace and wisdom, what do I do then?” Maybe he HAS decided to delegate foreign policy to wiser heads and take the credit for their policies. But on domestic policy, he WILL have a solid majority in the House, and 58 Senators, who will do their d@mnedest to pull him to the left–Obama could become very dangerous once those pesky old Republicans are out of the way…
By the way, if people really wanted somebody to take on those big, bad oil companies, they could have voted for someone who did–Sarah Palin! But facts don’t matter, she ain’t got no ejakashun, ya gotta trust the cool community organizer from Hahvid and Shy-town who knows where it’s at, until it’s time to do something.

“The Right believed as the Left did that the nation elected a man who would pull American policy in as sharply a liberal direction as anything since the Carter administration.”
I certainly wasn’t looking for an ideological left turn on the international front. Obama was always a foreign policy opportunist, and I worried considerably more about sheer ignorance. His central agenda has also always been domestic. He’s not stupid; he knows he needs a robust economy to pay for HHS & Education. Daschle is no centrist, and Edu is the appointment I’m waiting to see — unless Obama made it in the last couple of days when I wasn’t paying attention.
