NFL Open Thread: Steelers vs Cowboys
posted at 1:14 pm on December 7, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Hey, at least this week, Notre Dame didn’t lose … but it didn’t play, either. Charlie Weis gets to keep his job another year despite another non-winning season, and now he has Ty Willingham defending him, which was a classy thing for his predecessor to do. I doubt that Notre Dame will tolerate another six-win season from Weis, especially with the way the Irish managed to lose to Syracuse, Boston College, and narrowly avoided losing to Navy.
At any rate, that means that I’m not owed a victory from my Pittsburgh Steelers in the karmic sense, but I think they’ll win anyway. They smashed the New England Patriots last week, and the Cowboys have to come to Pittsburgh to play today. The Steelers appear to be growing stronger and gaining momentum. I wouldn’t be surprised by a blowout, but I’ll predict a 27-14 victory for the Black and Gold today. They’ll need it, because Baltimore will probably beat Washington today, and that will set up the showdown next week between the two conference rivals.
What game will you be watching today? Jazz will no doubt watch the Jets stomp on the 49ers, but the better game will be the Eagles at the Giants. I’m not betting against the Giants this week; they’ll beat Donovan McNabb by 10.

Blowback

I feeelllllllllll a pick……..
Benjamin9 on December 7, 2008 at 7:17 PM
I’m relieved that No. 85 walked off the field. That looked nasty.
conservative_in_texas on December 7, 2008 at 7:18 PM
Yeay. Heath Miller is from a little town near here. (Honaker, VA)
hillbillyjim on December 7, 2008 at 7:18 PM
Looks like we got a ballgame
conservnut on December 7, 2008 at 7:18 PM
Dallas has a long drive ahead of them to get into reasonable field goal range given the wind there. Will Ed pull out any of his remaining hair if we wind up heading into OT?
Jazz Shaw on December 7, 2008 at 7:21 PM
Jason Witten is from a small TN town near here, also. FWIW.
hillbillyjim on December 7, 2008 at 7:22 PM
Great time for a Polamalu interception.
hillbillyjim on December 7, 2008 at 7:23 PM
Damn
conservnut on December 7, 2008 at 7:24 PM
Well, that’ll work just as well.
BOOYAH!

The Good Lord giveth, and the Terrible Towel taketh away.

OT (wait – there is no topic!)
Drudge has a headline up that Tribune Corp is looking at bankruptcy. Hooray! Couldn’t have happened to a bigger bunch of Obama-knobbing liberal nitwits.
I hope the entire editorial board loses millions in their ESOP. Not because they endorsed their first Democrat – a socialist – in 161 years, but because they abandoned journalism in favor of a partisan advocacy to do so. They were cheerleaders for Obama from the very beginning.
Hope they rot. Can’t wait to laugh at unemployed liberal reporters.

There is some justice in the world after all.

And to think, a few minutes ago the network almost cut away to their regularly scheduled broadcast of Heidi.

ROFLOL Jazz so true!

Holding—#78 Cowboys. Geez.
hillbillyjim on December 7, 2008 at 7:29 PM
Jazz must be so happy – his Giants lose to the Eagles and they still win the division thanks to the Steelers defense!
What a way to sneak in the back door…..

Stay classy, T.O.
hillbillyjim on December 7, 2008 at 7:33 PM
Dallas’ defense has nothing to hang their heads about. Ask Ben.
hillbillyjim on December 7, 2008 at 7:35 PM
Congratulations to the Steelers fans. Although my beloved Cowboys lost, it was still a good game. Let’s hope tonight’s game and MNF are just as interesting!
conservative_in_texas on December 7, 2008 at 7:36 PM
How appropriated. The Steelers Defense scores the go ahead TD. AWESOME.
Hillbilly the Dallas D played well but Steelers still won ENJOY.
Conservative in Texas…Unbelieveable game.
Jamson64 on December 7, 2008 at 7:38 PM
The Steelers D came up big – just like all season long. But the Cowboys D matched them the entire game – this was a very close and well fought one.
nagee76 on December 7, 2008 at 7:38 PM
Although the Giants were dreadful today, thanks to Tony Romo they clinched the NFC East. Perhaps they’ll thank him in more intimate fashion next Sunday.
JammieWearingFool on December 7, 2008 at 7:40 PM
Don’t worry, I am!
hillbillyjim on December 7, 2008 at 7:40 PM
Heh.
hillbillyjim on December 7, 2008 at 7:41 PM
Damn, that game broke my heart as a Cowboys fan! I thought wearing my lucky SB triple-X sweatshirt would help, but…
That was a pretty awesome game, though, quite a defensive struggle. 1st time an RB has gotten so many yards against the Steeler’s D.
TeeDee on December 7, 2008 at 7:45 PM
The minute they tied it — I told my son the Steelers would win. You can’t let a team like them come back at home. Or at least it is dangerous to do so. My son is a Cowboys fan. This hurt less than the playoffs.
My ancestors remember Winkys and..the Super Burger was a Big Boy!
Wasn’t that name sexist?
IlikedAUH2O on December 7, 2008 at 7:46 PM
Did Winkys make a sandwich with a lot of shredded lettice on it?
IlikedAUH2O on December 7, 2008 at 7:47 PM
Good job 1st running back ….. 88 yards…what a day.
Tony Romo QB rating 44.9 today… prior to today- 103.2
Jamson64 on December 7, 2008 at 7:50 PM
Thanks Tex, this match up always produces some of the most exciting games. Thank God all the players walled off the field on their own, I pray all the fans (on both sides) make it home in one piece as well.
Zorro on December 7, 2008 at 7:57 PM
Zorro– some hard hitting tonite no doubt. I was surprised Washington popped like he did. Maybe the Steelers and Boys will meet again. You never know.
Jamson64 on December 7, 2008 at 7:59 PM
They’re scheduled again in 2012.
JammieWearingFool on December 7, 2008 at 8:01 PM
Jammie lol. I meant this year…but I suppose you knew that.

Appearently no one watched the Niners shut down the Bills last week and now another AFC east team got schooled by the new Singletary led Niner team. It’s always a great day for Niner fans when Dallas loses and the Niners win. Taking an icon like Farve down was icing on the cake. Think I’ll take the Niners and the points next week in Miami.
Rovin on December 7, 2008 at 8:20 PM
The only good thing about San Francisco is that it’s waaaaay over there and I’m waaaaay over here. Including the ‘Niners.
hillbillyjim on December 7, 2008 at 8:23 PM
The Cowboys are my team, win, lose or draw, but we get outcoached week after week. We’re loaded with talent, but undisciplined in all phases of the game, and our play calling on both sides of the ball (the draw on 3rd and 6, dropping off the blitz when we had them 3rd and 16 giving Holmes the long bomb, turnovers, key penalties, etc.) just kill us over and over. It’s like I’ve been watching a continuation of the same game for four months.
The best thing the Cowboys could do is fire Wade Phillips, and go get a real coach that instills discipline and order. I’m sure Phillips is a good guy, but he’s a lousy coach, yo.
Blacksheep on December 7, 2008 at 8:24 PM
In other football news… How does a team that got beaten by Mississippi get the title game over a team that barely lost to Texas Tech?
Y-not on December 7, 2008 at 8:27 PM
WOO!! Go Ravens!
resqgal on December 7, 2008 at 8:30 PM
Boy, I don’t know. He gets TO to produce.
I blame the 3&16 on Newman. And bad route for the pick. I thought play calls were good tonight, especially on D. I didn’t like the some of the offensive calls in the 4th, but I wasn’t playing in that wind.
Spirit of 1776 on December 7, 2008 at 8:30 PM
Cowboys outcoached by Bruce Aryans? Yeh you got problems…real bad problems.
Kidding
Jamson64 on December 7, 2008 at 8:37 PM
And don’t you know, I missed most of the 4th quarter to go to Mass tonight. I was shocked to find out the Steelers pulled it out.
Ed Morrissey on December 7, 2008 at 8:59 PM
Ed-It was a great ending. I have to admit I had them almost written off. Luckily the Steelers best offense-the D- came through over and over.
Jamson64 on December 7, 2008 at 9:09 PM
That was a great game. YAY!! was sweating there for a while though.
sheebe on December 7, 2008 at 9:13 PM
You missed a fantastic finish. Hope you TiVo’d it.
JammieWearingFool on December 7, 2008 at 9:24 PM
If Obama’s election is proof of God’s quirky sense of humor, then this news is proof that there is a limit.
Jaibones on December 7, 2008 at 9:42 PM
“Distance makes the heart grow fonder” or in this case it may have been a heartburn for Jet’s fans. For the record Jim, I go back to the days of Brodie at Kesar Stadium when we rarely got past the Rams, and when we did the Cowboys would send us packing….till the 80′s rolled around and the Niner Faithful were rewarded with Walsh,Montana,Lott et all…..and yes, I still see the “catch” against Dallas by just closing my eyes……we’re back in a funk now, but today was a good day.
Rovin on December 7, 2008 at 9:43 PM
Correction: It’s Kezar Stadium
Rovin on December 7, 2008 at 10:11 PM
Steelers win.
If you’re not a Steel fan, you are probably a liberal.
Bishop on December 7, 2008 at 10:22 PM
Pittsburg needed the weather conditions to save them today. On a field with no wind and normal tempatures Dallas routes them. Pittsburg is overrated and will be exposed next week by the Ravens and Ray Lewis and Ed Reed.
Irvin88 on December 7, 2008 at 10:57 PM
Bishop did your state not vote for Obama therefore if your a Steeler your most likely liberal.
Irvin88 on December 7, 2008 at 10:58 PM
Hmm…the Cowboys are *supposed* to be God’s team. Ed must have said some powerful prayers tonight. Forget Wade Phillips and his Gore-Tex coat, I say we blame Ed for the loss! ;o)
conservative_in_texas on December 7, 2008 at 11:29 PM
Ed, good news for you, my hometown team won, 24-10, and gets the hometeam advantage next week. My prediction, Ravens by 10 next week!
Razgriez on December 8, 2008 at 3:09 AM
The Steelers offensive line is lousy and everyone knows it. The question is whether the Ravens will be able to score more than 10-13 points. If not, the Steelers will probably beat them again.
forest on December 8, 2008 at 7:33 AM
Wow…..what a great end to that game….and the coldest game I’ve ever been to in my life!! I am still half frozen this morning! Go Steelers!!
slapnuts on December 8, 2008 at 7:39 AM
Ain’t it the truth.
By the way, it’s Pittsburgh.
