NFL Open Thread: Steelers vs Cowboys
posted at 1:14 pm on December 7, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Hey, at least this week, Notre Dame didn’t lose … but it didn’t play, either. Charlie Weis gets to keep his job another year despite another non-winning season, and now he has Ty Willingham defending him, which was a classy thing for his predecessor to do. I doubt that Notre Dame will tolerate another six-win season from Weis, especially with the way the Irish managed to lose to Syracuse, Boston College, and narrowly avoided losing to Navy.
At any rate, that means that I’m not owed a victory from my Pittsburgh Steelers in the karmic sense, but I think they’ll win anyway. They smashed the New England Patriots last week, and the Cowboys have to come to Pittsburgh to play today. The Steelers appear to be growing stronger and gaining momentum. I wouldn’t be surprised by a blowout, but I’ll predict a 27-14 victory for the Black and Gold today. They’ll need it, because Baltimore will probably beat Washington today, and that will set up the showdown next week between the two conference rivals.
What game will you be watching today? Jazz will no doubt watch the Jets stomp on the 49ers, but the better game will be the Eagles at the Giants. I’m not betting against the Giants this week; they’ll beat Donovan McNabb by 10.

Go Steelers.
MikeZero on December 7, 2008 at 1:21 PM
Anybody but Dallas!
Tony737 on December 7, 2008 at 1:22 PM
Cowboys leaving Marion Barber home to heal his toe means they’re pretty much saying the defense and the passing game are going to have to step up big time today if they want to win, since they figure it’s better to have a healthy Barber for the home games against New York and Baltimore (which also means if the Steelers jam T.O. at the line they way everyone else has for the past two months, Roy Williams better prove today he was worth that No. 1 draft choice the Cowboys gave to the Lions, or Tony Romo’s going to have a long afternoon.
jon1979 on December 7, 2008 at 1:23 PM
Super Steelers, and 27 -14 sounds reasonable. My brother and nephew are at Heinz Field now, tailgate party at 25˚! Hot buttered Rum for everyone!
Zorro on December 7, 2008 at 1:25 PM
Steelers must beat the Cowboys!!!! Rah Rah go Steelers go! Now I am tired………….

Go Cowboys!
BowHuntingTexas on December 7, 2008 at 1:46 PM
Like I said last Sunday, Ed, my Cowboys are gonna turn the Steelers into tinfoil.
Boys: 33
Tinfoil: 13
No, you can’t have my phone number to take that bet :)
Limerick on December 7, 2008 at 1:47 PM
You see how you are? See? I needed you to pick both Philadelphia and San Fran to win, just to ensure that both New York teams would prevail. But nooooooooo. And now the Giants are down by 3 already.
Just for that, I predict that the Steelers will simply cream the Cowboys.
:-p
Jazz Shaw on December 7, 2008 at 1:48 PM
Pittsburgh better be ready for disappointment. Oh wait…they are used to that.
BadMojo on December 7, 2008 at 1:52 PM
Unless you’re betting on a game I can think of no reason to watch any sport and that’s just so you can handicap. A casual gambler can just wait for the final score. How you guys can sit through this exercise in millionaire worship is beyond me.
manfriend on December 7, 2008 at 1:52 PM
Dallas 48 Pittsburg 0
NotTheMomma on December 7, 2008 at 1:53 PM
The Cowboys won’t do much scoring unless the Steelers turn it over in their own end. 20 points should be enough to win.
forest on December 7, 2008 at 1:55 PM
No Barber, and Romo’s coldest game ever. Looks like the Steelers to me.
Spirit of 1776 on December 7, 2008 at 1:57 PM
Ah, this should be a good game with the Steelers prevailing 24-21. But I will be focused on more important things, like Gators 31-Tide 20. Bring it on OU!
Gatordoug on December 7, 2008 at 1:57 PM
Grew up in Wisconsin, college in Illinois. Cold? Pashawwwwwwwwww!

My tinfoil hat has vanished since somebody closed down the threads on The One being an alien. Snif.
Steelers will likely win this. And without brutality!

Nothing on offense,that’s for sure.
*sigh*
Jazz Shaw on December 7, 2008 at 3:24 PM
Oh, and for the record, yes… I blame Ed.
Jazz Shaw on December 7, 2008 at 3:27 PM
Ravens and ‘Skins tonight. Then time to gear up for the Steelers next week. The thing that irritates the hell out of me is how many Steelers fans are able to get tickets for these games in Baltimore. There’s no way Baltimore ticket holders should be selling their tickets for this game.
Traitors.
nukemhill on December 7, 2008 at 3:34 PM
Go Steelers!
Cindy Munford on December 7, 2008 at 4:03 PM
Well that was a waste of a perfectly cold afternoon. Dang Giants wide receivers couldn’t hold onto a good pass if their lives depended on it.
C’mon Steelers. Let the Giants at least wrap up the division today.
And how about them Lions. Historic march to 0-16 is on track!

Skol Vikings, let’s go!!!
(Where did all the Packer fans go?)
WaltDakota on December 7, 2008 at 4:18 PM
Thank you, Eagles! Now I just need the Steelers to beat the ‘Boys. My ‘Skins are on the ropes, but not quite out of the wild card hunt.
Y-not on December 7, 2008 at 4:22 PM
Jazz,
For the right price, I’ll pick against the Giants next week.
Ed “Cold Cash” Morrissey
Ed Morrissey on December 7, 2008 at 4:59 PM
You’ll be receiving a notice from my attorneys at Dewey, Dickem and Howe shortly, enjoining you against picking either the Jets or the Giants to win for the duration of the regular season and any post season games – up to and including the Super Bowl – which either team may participate in.
Jazz Shaw on December 7, 2008 at 5:08 PM
It was so nice of the NFL to send an unbiased announcing crew to Pittsburgh for the game today….
Hey Jazz – I wish I could say I was sorry that the Giants lost but….
Oh yeah – GO BEARS!!!!!

Wade Phillips is an idiot. It’s the first half… 0-0. Why go for it… twice? Retarded. Does he understand he is facing the best defense in the league? I don’t mind it as a Steelers fan, but come on.
Anyways, I’m gonna say this every Steelers thread… Ed… BE A PENGUINS FAN!!!
ConservativePenguin on December 7, 2008 at 5:10 PM
Who are these people and what have they done with the Seahawks…..

Jazz Shaw on December 7, 2008 at 5:15 PM
The Cowboys are going down baby!
Yossarian on December 7, 2008 at 5:17 PM
The Lions game was blacked out here so I only followed it by the updates. Pretty close for a while there. I thought Detroit may pull it out and ruin a perfect season.
Canadian Infidel on December 7, 2008 at 5:30 PM
A little over six minutes to go in the first half and the Steelers have their best play which turns out to be made by their punter when his anemic 28 yard punt is touched by one of the cowboys and recovered by the Steelers. A defensive battle to be sure!
Jazz Shaw on December 7, 2008 at 5:32 PM
No Jazz – their best play of the half was that interception just now.

Steelers look a little rusty. Which is good news.
Boys. Anytime, anywhere.

Hee.
Go ‘Boys!
conservative_in_texas on December 7, 2008 at 6:19 PM
Romo got his groove on finally!!!

I have my doubts.

T.O. is a B.M.
(or P.O.S., take your pick)
hillbillyjim on December 7, 2008 at 6:28 PM
Yeah baby!
And our rookie running back has more yards against the tinfoils than any other this season? Just think what the Barbarian wuld do to them.
conservnut on December 7, 2008 at 6:30 PM
I predict a Giants-Titans Super Bowl. My Titans are not as good as their record, but they’re so far under the radar they don’t feel much pressure.
ddrintn on December 7, 2008 at 6:30 PM
Ed the Greek!
Bwahahahahaha…..dude.
hillbillyjim on December 7, 2008 at 6:33 PM
To be honest, I thought JJ had lost his mind when he picked up TO. But, last year TO seemed to mature finally, and play football as a member of a team. No complaining, no tantrums.
Now, if you want to talk about PACMAN, I’ll sign the commitment papers for JJ myself. Possibly the dumbest move ever by the Cowboys…Evah!
BobMbx on December 7, 2008 at 6:33 PM
Some nice, classic, cold weather December football. Of course, I’m torn as to cheering. I certainly don’t need Dallas winning another game now that the Giants lost today (though it shouldn’t matter too much by week 17) but at the same time, even if the Jets pull out a win in San Fran (what the heck are they doing out there???) we need to keep an eye on who gets home field advantage or even a bye in the playoffs. So seeing Pittsburgh go down wouldn’t be so bad either.
Still looking forward to Ed and I both watching a Steelers – Jets game in the post season. I’m sure our friendship won’t be damaged when New York thumps Pittsburgh like a rented mule.
Jazz Shaw on December 7, 2008 at 6:34 PM
e
They just gave up another TD.
hillbillyjim on December 7, 2008 at 6:38 PM
Tomorrow night’s game should be a good one. (Bucks at Panthers)
hillbillyjim on December 7, 2008 at 6:40 PM
JJ still thinks that he can take any troublemaker from around the NFL and pick them up for a song and rehabilitate them. I have to admit, he has been pretty sucessful in the past with that. But Pacman may be too far gone.
conservnut on December 7, 2008 at 6:40 PM
Buc’s whatev.
hillbillyjim on December 7, 2008 at 6:41 PM
I am always and forever a Cowboys fan and certainly against the Steelers!
How ’bout them Cowboys?!
Jenfidel on December 7, 2008 at 6:41 PM
If the Cowboy “D” finally realizes how good they really are, and the offense uses TO and Wiliams like they should, anything is possible.
Benjamin9 on December 7, 2008 at 6:42 PM
None of this matters. Until Romo wins a playoff game he will be irrelevant, just like Dirk Nowitzki.
cannonball on December 7, 2008 at 6:43 PM
Dang, is that Fran Tarkenton back there scramblin.?
hillbillyjim on December 7, 2008 at 6:44 PM
One game at a time …
Benjamin9 on December 7, 2008 at 6:44 PM
Wade Phillips’ coat reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where George wears Gore-Tex.
conservative_in_texas on December 7, 2008 at 6:44 PM
I was thinking Rodger the Dodger.
conservnut on December 7, 2008 at 6:45 PM
I ‘member the ’70s battles between the Cowboys and Steelers. In fact, I learned how to scream at the TV watching Staubach and Bradshaw work the old-time magic.
Being a Dallas fan; no, strike that…a Dallas member, I will say that Jack Lambert was the toughest player ever to walk onto a field. I really enjoyed watching him play.
BobMbx on December 7, 2008 at 6:48 PM

Dallas is looking impressive, particularly their D.

Uncharacteristic flub for Heinz Ward.
hillbillyjim on December 7, 2008 at 7:12 PM
And suddenly, with less than four minutes to go, the Dallas fans begin to look a bit nervous.
Jazz Shaw on December 7, 2008 at 7:12 PM
