Video: Hank Paulson, cartoon character

In which a thousand afternoons spent watching the kids’ favorite DVDs finally catch up to the boss. I can’t throw stones as I’ve long since started seeing politics through the archetypes of Romero’s movies. The economy’s just about at the point in “Dawn of the Dead” where the gang breaks into the mall and the zombies start flooding in. You know things are about to go irretrievably FUBAR; the only question is who’ll manage to avoid getting eaten. The good news? The daring black guy in charge keeps his cool and figures a way out. Fingers crossed!

I’m letting MM slide because I love Pixar too, but if I see any “High School Musical” analogies creeping into her punditry, we’re holding an intervention. Exit question: Isn’t Wall-E a more apt analogy for Paulson? He has an impossibly huge mess to clean up, and he’s not too bright.

And there’s no way to compare this guy to Syndrome, is there? Ah well…

Boop boop dittum dattum wattum, choo

My collie says:

Next time CC, just Rick-Roll me, okay?

CyberCipher on December 5, 2008 at 7:08 PM

I agree with AP: Wall-E is more appropriate. Both speak in a language that you can’t quite understand, but can derive his meaning with some effort.

sirnapsalot on December 5, 2008 at 7:09 PM

I can speak whale.

Nope, the squirrel from “Ice Age”. Always after the nut, always the same not so good result….

Plus Sid the Sloth gave him a “bail-out” — after he died.

My collie says:

Sid deserves all the abuse that we can heap upon him for that.

CyberCipher on December 5, 2008 at 7:34 PM

I would compare Paulson to Terrence and Phillip; one wonders if he could fart correctly.

radjah shelduck on December 5, 2008 at 7:50 PM

I can’t throw stones as I’ve long since started seeing politics through the archetypes of Romero’s movies I came up with the even more nuanced Wall-E analogy.

FIFY.

I’m thinking…………

Patrick Star = Chris Dodd

Squidward = Harry Reid

Mr. Krabs = Barney Frank

Spongebob = Nancy Pelosi

I *love* Michelle’s Disney analogy. Kudos to her for helping us laugh during this economic nightmare.

As for Paulson, he reminds me of Richard Kimble (Harrison Ford’s character) in “The Fugitive.” When Kimble was about to jump off the dam, he had the most frightened look in his eyes. Paulson has the same look. Every single day. I keep expecting him to collapse on camera. Despite his part in this whole mess, my heart goes out to the guy. I wouldn’t want to be in his shoes.

conservative_in_texas on December 5, 2008 at 8:27 PM

We are being led by a bunch of absolute morons. Heaven will be all the sweeter.

Mojave Mark on December 5, 2008 at 8:32 PM

and he’s not too bright.

How stupid does that make congress and the president since he conned them out of $700 billion?

snaggletoothie on December 5, 2008 at 9:05 PM

Okay, folks, I have a very important question.

Is it Michelle MALkin (rhymes with “gal”, “pal” and “Gore Vidal”) or is it MAWLkin (rhymes with “wall”, “fall” and, of course, “gumballs”)?

I tried to check the old daily Vent videos but they don’t seem to be available in the vault. (Wussup wit dat?)

I’m pretty darn sure, though, that Michelle pronounces her name MAWLkin, yet all these hosts keep calling her “Michelle MALkin” lately.

This is tearing me apart.

I would compare Paulson and company to the Keystone Cops. He (and they) expend a great deal of energy and monetary activity to no good end. I think the word “idiots” kinda sums it up.

Zorro on December 5, 2008 at 9:47 PM

All along,during this financial disaster,Michelle
Malkin’s brilliant analogy makes sense!

I guess the shark scene, and the underwater mines must represent ACORN and the Liberal housing mortgage debauckle
and banking lending practices!

And Dori, could also represent Nancy Clueless Pelosi,or
Barney ‘Banking Queen” Franks! haha.

the man has the ability to make me nervous just by his stage presence …

joey24007 on December 5, 2008 at 10:13 PM

Thanks, Gianni. I never thought to check her YouTube account. You rule!

And, just by the one video I watched, it sounds like she says MAHLkin (rhymes with “doll”, “vaal” and “Marc Chagall”).

The plot thickens…

Tuning Spork on December 5, 2008 at 10:13 PM

I think Paulson, visually, has a bit of the cartoon bad guy in him. It’s not quite C. Montgomery Burns…and not quite Simon Bar Sinister, but somewhere in between.

Oh, and yum, of course.

Jaibones on December 5, 2008 at 10:58 PM

If Paulsen is a cartoon character it is Wiley E. Coyote. No matter how badly his schemes go astray he keeps coming up with even more harebrained ways to try the same thing, as Bugs Bunny would say, “What a maroon.”

Seems to me they priced themselves out of the market. The auto industry and the nation cannot afford them at their very artificially inflated wages.

So, yes, let them feel unemployment or elect to go back to work with a far more competitive compensation package. No amount of shoring up the big 3 will save the situation. They are headed for the footnotes of history. As a former resident of Detroit it’ll he sad to see them go. But there’s nothing we can do for them but prolong the agony unless the management AND the union contract structures are dramatically changed.

{^_^}

Yep, that whole recession thing is such a hoot. You bet. The truth is I think a lot of the pundits on TV talking economy are every bit as much a joke as Paulson ever thought about being. After all, the only things they have to run are their mouths.

Sorry. But I think a lot of this is not funny. Not funny at all.

Terrye on December 6, 2008 at 6:54 AM

herself:

I would agree, but I think the point is that even if they cut wages, there might not be any way to save the auto industry. And I don’t care what those polls say now, if those companies fail and millions lose their job and the majority end up feeling the pinch they will blame the people who did not support the bail out. The fact that it is counter to what they said is beside the point. They will also blame conservatives, free trade, NAFTA and everyone but those wonderful liberal Democrats who are trying to save the economy blah blah blah.

And people can make all the smirky jokes about Paulson they want to, that is the reality.

Terrye on December 6, 2008 at 6:58 AM

The truth is Paulson has a thankless job and no matter what he does or says or how he deals with all this there will be people giving him hell. I feel kind of sorry for him. People are treating him like a dictator or whatever and he is probably counting the days until this job is someone else’s problem.

Terrye on December 6, 2008 at 7:35 AM

The daring black guy in charge keeps his cool and figures a way out. Fingers crossed!

The daring black guy? Mr. “I’ll vote ‘present’ so I don’t actually have to take a position on a controversial issue” black guy? The guy who thinks “change” is represented by entrenched old-time corruptocrats like Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden?

You’ll need a lot more than crossed fingers if you’re relying on “the daring black guy” to figure a way out of this mess.

AZCoyote on December 6, 2008 at 8:33 AM

Schumer and Frank are Wiley Coyote from the Bugs Bunny cartoon in which the coyote proclaims himself to be a “sooooper genius”.

Another reason government imbeciles should keep out of business.

It’s a movie reference, I’m pretty sure.

Your point stands nonetheless.

They are trying to reflate the bubble. Not the same bubble perse but pumping out more and more money eventually that money will find an imbalance. We are at a staggering competitive disadvantage to China. So they hold all the cards right now. China depegs from the dollar an economic holocaust results. Chinese imports go through the roof and we get hyperinflation. So I ask myself what country do we have a competitive advantage against? Mexico…

I thought about that during the North American Union scuttlebut. What country can we get to replace China and subsidize our lifestyle by making goods that they will ship here? Mexico!! Due to illegal immigration much needed reforms in Mexico have been delayed. The government was able to ignore the drug wars raging below the radar which are now front and center to all Mexicans. So what is the solution to both our problems? US dollars going to Mexico to stamp out the drug cartels and in return Mexico gets to make our t-shirts. Make Mexico safer and draw their citizens back into their own country to make our products. It is a win win situation and America can avoid a much needed recession, well at least a recession deep enough to change our economy and change the way our economy works, to change our financial/political structure.

Mexico is the only place or dollars are going to be worth anything. That imbalance is going to draw capital. China will go along with it becuase they do not want the dollars they have to be completely worthless overnight, better for them to be able to bleed their dollars off slowly.

This is my biggest worry, the reform will not come. The reflation of our bubble economy will be successful. Oh well I’m going into economies and if dollars start flowing into Mexico I’m investing in Mexican commodities. Viva capitalism!

Theworldisnotenough on December 6, 2008 at 11:19 AM

No, Wall-E is not apt. Paulson is more like Eve visiting Earth, shooting at everything in sight in the hopes that one of the shots will hit home, but none ever do.

unclesmrgol on December 6, 2008 at 11:35 AM

Suck it up! I couldn’t agree more.

hamer500 on December 6, 2008 at 6:19 PM

Michelle should be unloading like an angry shark. Come on, Paulson as Treasury Secretary since 2006 presided over this economic catastrophe – this is not what we paid him for! Did he advise again these subprime loans to get high-risk minorities into homes (to help buy votes)? Did he advise against the legalization of credit default swaps and other virtually unregulated instruments that would balloon into astronomically high debt?

The fact is we were led down a path of disaster by our elected and appointed leaders who are paid to protect the public interests, not make the US a train wreck. And when the obligatory bailout came the politicians act like the lowlife scum so many are and they made sure billions in taxpayer pork was set aside to help with their reelections! Americans should be angry as hell, lynching angry! Instead the people of this nation act like a bunch of stupid sheep and even reelect many of these miscreants who, like Barney Frank, were even on tape shielding Freddie & Fannie from stronger oversight. What is it with these liberal Mass. morons, they think his smile is sexy?

It seems as long as a politician has celebrity status, almost no amount of revealed deceptiveness, incompetence & immorality can knock them out. American just love celebrities no matter what. Hillary concocts this outrageous lie about being under fire in Bosnia to appear heroic and she gets to be Secretary of State! This country is just stupid, maybe not as stupid as suicidal Britain wrt to Muslims or most of Europe but stupid enough for another depression.
