Casualties decline in Iraq and Afghanistan to lowest level

The US military reported the lowest level of casualties in both theaters of war in over five years of fighting. The news from Iraq comes as no surprise, as violence has rapidly declined since the surge and some units have yet to fire a weapon in anger during their tour. Afghanistan, though, comes as a much bigger surprise:
U.S. combat deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan last month dropped to the lowest combined level since the United States began fighting the two wars more than five years ago.
Eleven American servicemembers died in combat in the conflicts in November. Seven others died in non-hostile incidents. The highest monthly total for combat deaths in both wars was 129 in November 2004.
Security in Iraq has improved dramatically over the past year, despite a number of high-profile bombing against civilian targets in recent weeks. …
Afghanistan is a more complicated picture. There was only one U.S. combat death in November, the lowest level since February. However, 11 other coalition troops died there last month.
Throughout the presidential campaign, we heard nothing but gloomy, pessimistic analyses of the effort in Afghanistan, and not without some justification. Michael Yon, who is there now, confirms that NATO has let the momentum slip through its fingers and that the Karzai government has lost some credibility due to corruption in Kabul. The US commanders on the ground want 20,000 more troops as a start, one of the few points of agreement between Barack Obama and John McCain on war policy.
This, however, makes it look as though the prospects aren’t quite so bleak. Taliban activity has been blunted, apparently due to the stepped-up efforts of the Pakistani military. American attacks across the border began increasing several months ago, and USA Today quotes a brigade commander who says he’s seen a decline in attacks over that same period. Winter plays a role in this, too, but even in comparion with other winters, that’s a low number for casualties in the war zone.
We still have a lot of work to do, and we need more troops and a bigger commitment to infrastructural missions to accomplish it. Perhaps, though, the outlook isn’t quite as bleak as believed, and our aggressive strategies and tactics have created some space for success.

Not a big shocker to those of us who’ve been following the news closely. The Predators and Reapers are doing a great job and the bad guys don’t enjoy silent death from out of nowhere.
Good job Troops!

Military action had nothing to do with it: Clearly it’s quaking, trembling fear of the approaching Obama-Clinton dreadnought that frightened the jihadis back into their caves.

Is it fatuous to point out that it is safer there than in Chicago or NYC?

Just a coincidence , it will change.
Jan 21 , they will report declines in violence and ignore increases.

Big thanks to our servicemen and women! I know I’m safer because of their efforts. And so are the people of Iraq and Afghanistan.

Ha! That’s right. But as of Jan. 20th, look for a ’surge’ in media stories giving Obama credit for our victories. But that’s ok, we all know the truth. Who cares about the credit? As long as our Troops win. History will record it properly (unlike Vietnam).

Your right about that Obama Clinton ticket. Anyone thinking Biden will be allowed to speak has another thing coming. Hillary is one of those ones that likes to influence, but not have her name on any of it. Whats the word I’m looking for?…. mmm, oh a SNEAK!

So long as its Allied numbers and not bad-guy numbers. Now to do some damage in Pockystonn, as Bommie calls it.

A grain of salt (sorry, male PMS today)….
Winter has started to set in on the mountains.
Just trying to think out of the box.

My God, just the act of Obarfy getting elected has driven the savages back to their caves; think of what he can do when he actually takes office.
It would help though, if we had NATO allies beyond Canada who are willing to actually…oh I don’t know…FIGHT.

Why should they fight a nation led by someone they consider one of their own?

Also worth pointing out….violence in Afghanistan is much more cyclical than in Iraq because the weather makes vast swaths of Eastern Afghanistan, including the Pakistani border, impossible for ground-based travel. As snows block passes and weather becomes bone chilling, especially at night, combat activity draws to a near halt in much of the country. Expect that low number in Afghanistan to continue through the Winter. It’s freakin’ cold here.

A great big shout out to the men and women overseas who are making it happen. Great work.
You’re a pilot, so I know you appreciate what a freakin awesome machine that Reaper is. If the bad guys got ahold of the specs they’d probobly just decide the fight was impossible and give up.

God bless our soldiers!
Last night my son was playing World of Warcraft and got into a discussion with a female soldier in Iraq. I asked him if he thanked her for her service and he said Yes! We all need to thank them for their service, wherever we run into them!

Could be why the terrorists went after a softer target in Mumbai, they keep getting their backsides kicked when going up against US & NATO troops and locals trained by them…..

A good sign. It took longer and cost more than it should’ve but thankfully conditions on the ground more and more favor withdrawal under peaceful and I dare say victorious conditions.
It doesn’t even bother me as much as it maybe should that Obama and his followers will likely try to take credit for getting us out of Iraq as if their actions brought about these conditions that favor withdrawal. I know better and I the troops who are the ones who actually brought about this victory know better. That’s what’s important.

It’s because Obama is (already) President.
Say goodbye to our kick-butt military and hello to the Obama civilian security corps, (thought police).

Thanks for the promotion, but I’m just a lowly Flight Attendant! Haha! However, I was in the Air Force and know a little bit about these weapon systems.
Any video game geeks out there who’d like to make an actual difference in the REAL world should join the Air Force and be the guy who sits in an office in front on a computer flying a drone on the other side of the planet and kill bad guys with the push of a button.
Tony737 on December 4, 2008 at 1:25 PM
I know it’s coming too. It’ll be frustrating as hell the number of his followers who will cheer him for it but again, we know who really won this thing before Obama even took office as POTUS. The U.S. Military and the Iraqi People.

Nope.

Heh. OUR casualties are down, thankfully. Curious as to whether thre’s an INCREASE in taliban casualties for this period. I don’t recall any comparisons done, has anyone seen anything pertaining to this?

Thank you for the perspective. You are the ones I truly believe.
I like to hear reports from our guard guys about there when they come back home.
They make school presentations a lot of times about what it’s really like over there.
Islam doesn’t hate us any less than they used to.
I’m sure there are plenty holed up & plotting something

Aside from the winter weather, the tension with India may have some of the fighters contemplating whether they should run off to Kashmir for the hope for upcoming war with India.

Is anyone making a squad level reusable/disposable UAV/U-CAV that allows the troops on the ground, the immediate ability to do a sneak and peak,
and if need be a
“flying Claymore” “thermobaric grenade”
