Comedy gold: Thinking it’s a prank, GOP rep hangs up on Obama — twice

Then Rahm called her. And she hung up on him, too.
I hereby offer one of my kidneys in exchange for the audio. Mint condition! Aside from a little Jack Daniel’s damage.
In a series of hang-up and follow-up calls that appears to have taken up much of the afternoon, Ros-Lehtinen first received a call on her cell phone, from a Chicago phone number, and was informed by the caller that Obama wished to speak with her. When a man sounding like Obama got on the line, Ros-Lehtinen cut him off, saying, “I’m sorry, but I think this is a joke from one of the South Florida radio stations known for these pranks.” She then hung up, according to a statement issued by her office.
A little while later, Chief of Staff-designate Rahm Emanuel called the congresswoman back.
“Ileana, I cannot believe that you hung up on the president-elect,” Emanuel said, according to the congresswoman’s office.
Her response?
“Ros-Lehtinen told Rahm that she didn’t believe the call was legitimate and hung up on Emanuel,” her statement said.
Eventually she took the call — and still didn’t totally believe it was him. She’s the anti-Palin! Exit question: Doesn’t she know that there’s no such thing as a truly great Obama impersonator?

Had Palin hung up on those jerks….we all know the PDS sufferers would have spun it to her negative.

She just started a trend.

Rahm asks about hanging up on The President Elect? Rahm is drinking the cool-ade from Da King.
JAW on December 3, 2008 at 7:23 PM
That’s all legal under the Canadian system, isn’t it? I’m not saying it’s cool or anything.

Four words for obama:
GET USED TO IT, BABY.
(hey whaddya know? I have the qualifications to be a Dem VP choice….)
(UPDATE: No, I don’t . I tried to stick my left foot in my mouth while trying to stick my head up my $$$.
Couldn’t quite do it. Either I’m not that flexible or/and not quite that idiotic.

O/T,crap that was 7:00PM:)
canopfor on December 3, 2008 at 7:38 PM
Unless Republicans want to spend that many more years out in the wilderness, they might want to start picking up the phone with a more serious attitude. Just sayin’.

smack a liberal from Alberta for me. Okay!?
upinak on December 3, 2008 at 7:39 PM
What was the purpose of the call? The article doesn’t say. Is it traditional that a President-Elect call every Congressman and Senator during the transition?
ZzzzDad on December 3, 2008 at 7:40 PM
Ros Lehtinen didn’t beleive Rahm called, hahahahah!
I love it,and I share the exact same last name as Ros!

The Obama people are so petty. This should never have been leaked–she had a good reason. He’s not G*d or anything.
IR-MN on December 3, 2008 at 7:46 PM
What I like was Rahm Emmanuel saying in essence how dare you hang up on the messiah.
What a moron.
Jdripper on December 3, 2008 at 7:49 PM
Seems understandable that righties are paranoid to take a phone call from someone important since crazy sarah’s chat with “Sarkozy.”
benny shakar on December 3, 2008 at 7:51 PM
That would be very cute, but I presume you are joking.

I’d offer up a kidney just to have the opportunity to hang up on him.
paragon27x on December 3, 2008 at 7:52 PM
I wrote emails to all three parties trying this and called them pathetic losers. Then informed them that I will never ever ever ever ever vote for them ever. (well, I never voted Bloc because I ain’t a Frenchie…)
On Topic: That’s funny as all get out. I suppose she thought that listening to the Articulate Obama “Uh” and “Um” his way through a conversation was not worth it without some alcohol….. Because that’s gotta be painful.
mjk on December 3, 2008 at 7:52 PM
…fess up…which of us wouldn’t hang up on Obama, were we to know in advance that it was actually him calling….
…personally, I’d hang up on him immediately, not wanting to succumb to the temptation of saying anything snarky…just a curt “I’m afraid we don’t want any….”…
…I would not extent the same courtesy to Rahm…I’m afraid that I’m genetically predisposed to be rude to flying monkeys….
Puritan1648 on December 3, 2008 at 7:53 PM
Well, it could have been a lot worse, she could have hung up on Ed McMahon.
MB4 on December 3, 2008 at 7:54 PM
This doesn’t bode well for the Red Crisis phone if obama makes a 3 am call to Putin
OBAMA: “Vladimir, this is Barack. We’ve had nuclear detonations in New York and Los Angelos”
PUTIN; “Who is Dis?”
OBAMA; “This is BARACK OBAMA and we think you just nuked uhm, er ahm, er uh New Ah york and Uhm Los Angelos”
PUTIN “Verry funny.. I am KGB.. Er Former KGB.. You no fool Vladimir Borisevich. I know dis is stupid prank from stupid capitalist pig disc jockies. If you were in Russia I would castrate you with rusty butter knife”
OBAMA “LISTEN YOU IDIOT.. I”M SERIOUS.. THIS IS NO JOKE.. TWO OF OUR CITIES HAVE BEEN NUKED AND RAHM EMANUELL IS TAKING A KNIFE AND STICKING IT INTO A MAP OF RUSSIA YELLING KILL THEM, NUKE THEM”
PUTIN “Ha Ha Ha.. Dat is good joke..very funny… I hang up now funny guy.. If you ever come to people’s paradise of Russia you join me for bottle of Vodka..Da?? Bye”

…I wouldn’t put it down to “paranoia”, although among the mental unstable it’s comforting to project mental handicaps on others….
…no…I’d put it down to standards…personally, I avoid contact with thieves, liars, bunco artists, traitors, perverts and other species of Democrats on a blanket basis…my reputation isn’t so high that I can risk the association…and my standards are sufficiently high that I find association with vermin distasteful….
…just when I talk at you…not with you….

Hang up on them, America.

…and rather be seen as toadies for Obama and his minions? That’ll play well in Peoria…there’re plenty of so-called Republicans all a’flutter over Mr. O and his mantra of “change”…they’re as transparent as a glass of dirty water….
…no…the Congresswoman was quite correct in suspecting some radio station fishing her…it happens all the time…as to her snub of Rahm, good for her….

Rahm Emmanuel: Ros-Lehtinen, do you have ANY CLUE what happens to people who hang up on the president-elect? By the time I’m through with you, you won’t have enough legislative power to set your kids’ curfew! Do you hear me? You f–K with us, we’ll make certain that a certain someone’s constiuants think that they are diddling goats! YOU HAVE NO CLUE THE HELL YOU HAVE JUST UNLEASHED UPON YOURSELF AND THE PEOPLE YOU LOVE. I would rather be a zit on a diseased camel’s butt than you during this coming congressional session. You are going to… *click*
justfinethanks on December 3, 2008 at 8:31 PM
Eh, I can see the Congresswoman’s point. Who ever expects to get a call from the President (or President-Elect)?
Kensington on December 3, 2008 at 8:42 PM
The president-elect should just shut up until Jan 20 when he loses his blackberry.
nitzsche on December 3, 2008 at 8:46 PM
What’s Mr. Emmanuel’s point? A president is not a king, an emperor or God’s representative on earth. Currently, Obama’s not even the president….hell, for people that care about how the system works, he’s not even the president-elect until after the electoral college convenes. We are all free to hang up Presidents, Presidents-elect and future Presidents-elect at will. This goes double for a representative of the people in the Legislative branch which is a separate and equal branch of government.
JadeNYU on December 3, 2008 at 8:52 PM
Thanks for the chuckle, AP!
I’m really surprised a chief executive would place his own phone calls. Maybe if Lightworker had had any executive experience, he would’ve known to have an assistant do it. Welcome to four years of POTUS in training wheels.

this is too funny. the naked emperor’s minions getting after a GOP rep for hanging up on the president-elect.
haha.. hahah..haha
And Rahm can call with a straight face “Hi, yes, can I speak to Rep. Ros-Lehtinen please. THis is the office of the president-elect calling and the president-elect would like to speak with you.”
classic comedy

He best get used to it, I suspect he’ll be getting that response quite often especially as the economy nose dives due to his funding of hundreds of social ecperiments.

I wonder if this will be on the news?
RedbonePro on December 3, 2008 at 9:17 PM
Well, Mutt and Jeff could have called Cynthia McKinney, and she would have responded, “Do you know who I am?”
These boys are bereft without their Blackberries.
onlineanalyst on December 3, 2008 at 9:17 PM
I hate to point out the obvious but that would have also been the case if McCain had managed to get his head out of his posterior long enough to win.
Seriously, it’s going to be four years of learning on the job and America is screwed because at this time and place we need a leader not a freakin’ intern.
highhopes on December 3, 2008 at 9:22 PM
Which makes the call even more baffling. Obama loves socialists and doesn’t have the same agenda as the Cuban-American country and he intends to abandon Israel to the terrorist thugs more akin to him and probably related to many of his relatives.
highhopes on December 3, 2008 at 9:25 PM
Safest thing for GOP folks to ask when getting a phone call from the alleged soon to be Prez is: ‘If this really is the President, why are you using a cell phone? I thought you only used a burning bush.’ THEN you hang up.
austinnelly on December 3, 2008 at 9:51 PM
One day Stalin’s secretary called Boris Pasternak to tell him that The Leader wishes to have a conversation with him at midnight (Uncle Stalin was a mercurial fellow). The Uncle was curious whether Pasternak thought Osip Mandelshtam wrote good poetry. Pasternak assured the Leader that yes, of course, Mandelshtam was an excellent poet. It didn’t help Mandelshtam.
My point here: One never knows whose head the Leader is going to ask for and … Ros-Lehtinen (assuming she’s familiar with the story) might have been terribly scared… Just like Pasternak was.
albertpale on December 3, 2008 at 9:52 PM
To clarify (sorry): Rahm should’ve called her first, to prepare her for the call from the Leader. She wouldn’t dare to cut Him off.
albertpale on December 3, 2008 at 10:02 PM
