Video: Is MSNBC the new Fox News?

Of course not. O’Reilly, we’re told, is a shameless political partisan whose shrieking demagoguery offends journalism. Surely liberals wouldn’t embrace someone like that at 8 p.m. Better pull Stewart aside and explain the difference before he persists with this nonsense about people being in the tank.

The knock on Colmes made me wince, not because it’s unfair but because it isn’t. Right or wrong, our favorite liberal is a dignified presence who’s suddenly contending for a job that is, per Stewart’s critique, inherently undignified. Maybe she’d change the dynamic, but the more centrist one is, the more unlikely that would seem. Be an attack dog and the left will love you; be fair and they’ll deride you as a stooge and a scarecrow for the conservative alpha male while the right forever grumbles that you’re still spouting too many talking points. It may be a lucrative job, but is it a good one? Word on the street is that some Foxies read this site; if so, how about putting her where she really belongs, on the “Special Report” panel with Krauthammer and Barnes? There are only two women there now, and based on the polls, it’s a safe bet she’d do as much for ratings as Whatshername and Whosthatagain.

What really irked me about last nights ep was the segment before this, when Stewart and John Oliver were talking smack about the terrorists in Mumbai. “ing douches,” stupid for the “plan” to Islamicize the world by either welcoming you or blowing you up, etc.

I was left thinking “where the heck has THIS been for the last six years?” though I guess better late than never.

With all due respect to “manly” soccer players, John Stewart is a soccer playing sissy. I hope one day he runs into Todd Palin and Todd rips Stewart a new one. After all it’s not often you get to whip someone’s ass who told you’re wife “fuck you” like Stewart did at a gig in NYC before the election. Pussy. Hell, I’d beat the crap out of him just for the fun of it.

dako on December 2, 2008 at 5:11 PM

I wonder when Stewart will be brave enough to parody The One

He is really funny if he hits both sides…the last year has been practically un-watchable as he chose sides for the election.

Jon Stewart will not criticize Obama, except the occasional gentle gab from the Left. He took a modest swipe at MSNBC, but took an even bigger swipe at Fox. Stewart will instead fixate on making fun of anything a Republican says to criticize Obama.

jp on December 2, 2008 at 5:27 PM

Indeed.

The alphabets mainly represent the Democrat party “center” and MSNBC its Kos/Moron.org extreme leftwing.

So, to compare FOXN to MSNBC requires one to be in the mainstream left. I guess not a shock. I guess it is more interesting to ask whether leftists are truly blind to their own biases or are playing the fool because it is politically convenient.

I often hear leftists denounce O’Reilly as some far right winger. Which is odd seeing as he has a number of glaring leftwing stances like pro gun control and anti death penalty. Olbermann is a doctrinaire leftist – I certainly can’t think of any view he has espoused that is not leftwing dogma.

Mr_Magoo on December 2, 2008 at 7:52 PM

Krauthammer is one of my favorite commentators, both for the clarity of his thinking, and for his droll humor. It also looks/sounds very much like he is on the other side of speech-language therapy for what must have been a whopper of a dysfluency (stutter). I used to work with a bunch of Speech-Language Pathologists, and I have nothing but props for someone who’s dealt with a stutter of such apparent magnitude, and makes a living speaking on television. I’ll sometimes tune out if he’s not on the panel (unless Bill Sammon is on; he’s another fave of mine).

By contrast, Jon Stewart has only his intermittently detectable intelligence and immensely overinflated estimation of his own cleverness to recommend him. He’s a snide, snarky simpleton with delusions of urbanity, and all the intellectual courage and honesty of the very PMSNBC stooges he belowns himself by bitching about.

And yes, KP is too good for Hannity, who appears to suffer from some kind of talking-point tourettes.

Noocyte on December 2, 2008 at 7:56 PM

Awesome.

I think his point was that even after weeks of hammering away about Ayers, only a very small section of the country really gave a crap about Obama’s associations. When most commentators who might want to sway the narrative might start discussing things people actually cared about, like the economy, he decided to stick with this losing strategy.

It’s gratifying to know that I’m not alone in wondering where all the real thinkers are in the media business. Frankly, it’s mystifying to me how some of these folks have become so successful. Sometimes I watch them and think, “I can say those same things over and over again like that guy. Yah. I can easily be disingenuous like that. Yah.”

Hell, maybe I should do it.

Now I’m no genius, but shouldn’t we relish having our thinking challenged by people smarter than we? Why can’t we have more Krauthammers, Buckleys and Pragers?

My wishlist for Christmas.

Hey, you wrote “Black” so you must be racist. Wait, I wrote black so I must be racist too.

Seriously though I think Stewart has alot of problems and probably realizes it’s all downhill from here. (Well ok, he has one moment left, when he interviews Barry on the show during the first 100 days.) The problem is that he doesn’t want to make fun of the guy or congress and his audience doesn’t want to watch him make fun of him either. Combine this with the fact he’s basically the same age as the dads of a good portion of the audience he has a big problem. (It’s hard to be cool and hip when you’re in your mid 40’s.)

You’re right, I don’t know what I was thinking. I am outraged at myself.

Fox didn’t get to be the most popular cable news network by bowing to Bush. Neither will Fox (if they hold to their original values) ever be challenged by MSDNC. Not even close Stewart! However if they slide left to be closer to all those other networks, CBS, NBS, ABS, etc., they’ll be toast.

I’m with you. When they start stuttering I just want to scream!

Kondrake annoys me, but I like Krauthammer. Mark Steyn would be a great addition on any show!
