Video: Atheists continue to win friends, influence people

posted at 6:44 pm on December 2, 2008 by Allahpundit

Via Breitbart, after 200+ comments in Headlines, I figured you’d want to see the sign for yourselves. As pure an example of spite in this vein as I’ve encountered since the atheist “holiday tree.” This is why people have contempt for me. (Well, no, it’s not.)

Exit question: Can we join hands and agree that this, at least, is legally suspect? Probably not, right?

An atheists-rights group is suing the Kentucky Office of Homeland Security because state law requires the agency to stress “dependence on Almighty God as being vital to the security of the Commonwealth.”

Haha. Hands joined.

I’m not religious. In fact, I had far too many years of Lutheran education for me to ever sincerely embrace Christianity as a adult. But I get the sense that essentially stating that “I’m attacking your beliefs” isn’t the best strategy to winning converts. If you read Acts, you’ll see that early Christians tried the same strategy. It didn’t work out so great for Saint Stephen.

Ugh. The only contempt I have is for these morons. If you don’t believe in God, leave Him and His believers alone. No harm, no foul.

Yes, but the motive for pursuing it is also suspect.

Atheist fundamentalist. Get used to the phrase, because it should be in common usage just as much as Christian or Muslim fundamentalist.

upinak on December 2, 2008 at 7:07 PM

You know, my family is Pagan. We celebrate Saturnalia. We don’t bother the Christians, the Jews, or anyone else. We celebrate with others in the community and have a grand old time. We follow the old traditions of decorating the tree and giving small presents, of feasting and singing, just as the Ancients did 2000 years and more ago.

Problem is, we’ve actually been harassed the last couple years by a local Christian group for “mocking Christmas”. I kid you not.

These atheists remind me of the same sort of shallow-minded single-issue folks as the ones giving us grief. If they don’t like it, don’t celebrate, have your own holiday. Life is too short for this sort of cr@p.

These atheists may be alive, but they don’t seem to have a life. they really need to find one.

AW1 Tim on December 2, 2008 at 7:07 PM

I don’t know. It just seems pretty stupid and spiteful, to me. I don’t know why any atheist would care so much about pounding on religions. The newscaster had it right to start, that was more an anti-religion piece than a pro-atheist piece. An real atheist wouldn’t bother trying to demean religions “Religion is only superstition that hardens hearts and enslaves minds.”

Legal?

We don’t seem to follow any laws these days, so I guess it fits right in with that, but now we’ll have to be subjected to any idiotic message being put in the rotunda, there, for “free speech”. It’s just getting really stupid.

I wonder when PETA will demand some space for their moronic display?

BTW, I’m willing to bet that most of these atheists just love vampire, ghost, and witch stories. That’s usually how they go. It’s kind of sad to watch.

progressoverpeace on December 2, 2008 at 7:09 PM

I should make it clear that 99% of the Christians in our area are great folk. We get along famously. The ones I am talking about are a very small, but extremely vocal group, much like, apparently, this bunch of atheists in Kentucky.

Sheesh, Allah. Have said on these threads before that most Christians have no contempt for atheists (we think you’re seriously mistaken, just as you think of us) and since I like your writing and your sense of humor and am glad you’re on Hot Air, I really wish you’d stop assuming people hate you ’cause you’re an atheist. Am beginning to think it’s a schtick like the beta maleness, only this one isn’t funny.

Some people “have contempt” for me because I’m Catholic. The vast majority don’t. I don’t go around assuming the worst because of the actions of a few.

OK? So in case you need to hear it:

we LIKE you, Allahpundit.

Now stop whining. :) It makes you look insecure in your beliefs.

saltydogg14 on December 2, 2008 at 7:16 PM

Good grief, atheists frickin’ suck. Except for Allah and myself, maybe.

Seriously, it drives me nuts more and more every year. I work in academia and I’m one of the (very) few who insistently and consistently (persistently, in other words) says “Merry Christmas,” even when (especially when, actually) replying to “Happy Holidays!” That’s the thing: atheists are squarely in the minority, and it’s the craven appeasement of religious/spiritual folks that advances their stupid secular agenda more than anything else.

I concur with Blink. The first amendment of the Constitution clearly prohibits “Congress” from establishing religion. At the time of ratification, several states had official religions. The purpose of the first amendment was to protect the individual state’s right to have an official religion from the potential tyranny of the other states banding together to establish a national religion.

It’s a shame that Allahpundit, who probably thinks he is enlightened on this subject, and others are unaware of the clear meaning of the first amendment. Worse is the judicial tyranny by members of the supreme court to impose their will by turning the bill of rights on its head. Those amendments, intended to protect the states and individuals, are now “incorporated” as being written against the states thanks to some interesting alchemy involving the 14th amendment, which was passed to protect the rights of former slaves.

Abuse of the 14th amendment is one of the serious problems with constitutional law right now (even Bush v. Gore was settled using the 14th amendment!), as pervasive as Congress’ multiplying its powers endlessly with tortured logic involving its powers granted by the commerce clause.

Phildorex on December 2, 2008 at 7:29 PM

Atheists feel the need to do this because they feel Christianity is dangerous and needs to be eradicated lest we become some puritan hick nation of witch burners. This is not an alternative to the Nativity scene as it is an attack on Christianity for political reasons.

Atheists want to eliminate Christianity as a cultural force. Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, are of no concern to atheists. Indeed, atheists have no problem with mysticism, or paganism, new age spirituality, or any other belief in the supernatural, even more irrational in their constructs. It is only Christianity for which they have contempt and fear. Why? Because religion, itself, is not their beef. Their objection to religion is not based on a principled objection to unscientific belief systems, but on a specific contempt for the social elements they see inherent in Christianity. They believe it contains the elements of social injustice, capitalism, imperialism, racism, and lots of other isms against which they have dedicated their lives.

This is merely left wing politics under another guise, just as, for example, the environmental movement is not about the environment, but about controlling the means of production – a fundamental tenet of communism.

What are they supposed to display for Christmas? The wonders of being an atheist? Great moments in atheism in the 20th Century? The magical future that could be yours if you just give up hope and embrace meaninglessness?

I’m not saying that this is how it has to be for atheists. They could unite as humanists and extol the virtues of the human mind or of “free thought.” They could unite as scientist and express their love of the natural world. Of course, many religious people might agree with them (while many fellow atheists may not) and that wouldn’t be any fun at all.

So these wonderful people have decided to unite around and define themselves by the fact that they don’t believe in something, and in doing so have left themselves two options:

Talk about nothing.
or
Talk about God.

And if you don’t talk about anything, no one pays any attention to you.

The atheist is wrong. Christians didn’t steal Christmas from the pagans, Christmas is just as pagan as it has always been. It just seemed convenient for the Catholic church to adopt their practices. Few Christians today know the real meaning behind so called “Christian” holidays. For instance, next time you see a Christian going to church because its Easter, ask them what the word Easter even means. Most of the time they just shrug their shoulders in uncertainty. Usually they are unaware that Easter was the name of the pagan fertility goddess whose signs were the egg and the rabbit (hence the celebration being in the spring, the time of new fertility). Many of the Christian founders of America found pagan celebrations like Easter, Christmas, and Halloween to be repulsive and for that reason, Christmas was illegal in much of America in to the 1800’s.

Maybe. Maybe.

But this helps:

The plaintiffs ask for the homeland security law to be stripped of its references to God. They also ask for monetary damages, claiming to have suffered sleeping disorders and “mental pain and anguish.”

“Plaintiffs also suffer anxiety from the belief that the existence of these unconstitutional laws suggest that their very safety as residents of Kentucky may be in the hands of fanatics, traitors or fools,” according to the suit

Here’s athiests big problem. They have no filter between their brain and their mouths.

I mean, the suit has merit, clearly. But regardless of whether or not they’re right, they come off as petty, atagonistic children.

I mean I don’t know how anyone could stand to be around that kind of person without punching them. Repeatedly.

But more to the point, I think what I dislike the most about atheists is that they recycle either Marxist nonsense or quotes from Aleister Crowley or Anton LaVey then stand there smugly looking for a pat on the back.

I saw in the interview with one of these douches starts yammering about Christmas being stolen from Pagans. Uh, not really moron. That’s a myth spread by Wiccans, who go out of there way to make the rest of us look bad.

Christians didn’t steal Pagan symbols, although some Christmas traditions are European pre-Christians in origin, but there is no evidence that Christians “stole” Christmas from Pagans that would pass the most basic academic muster. I belong to no organized church (as quite distinct from being non-religious), but certainly know an organized religion when I see one. Atheism, and “secular progressive-ism,” are most certainly religions, most especially among those who seek converts.

One thing I’ve never understood about atheists is why they care in the least what anybody else believes. If we are all just pre-programmed functions of the “natural world”, aren’t beliefs only natural? So isn’t being against what somebody believes the same as being against nature?

I find it even more odd that a group of atheists co-opts the Judeo-Christian concept of hardened hearts.

Even better is that by having this display would qualify as a ritual, and further confirm that atheism is a religion.

The requirement to credit God for Kentucky’s protection was tucked into 2006 homeland security legislation by state Rep. Tom Riner, D-Louisville, a Southern Baptist minister.

Who would have thunk it? Guess we won’t be hearing about this story in the MSM. Pity, it would have been fun to watch the usual suspects wet their pants. I’ll bet Sullivan had written a 10,000 word essay that used the word “christianist” 5,000 times before he realized that he wasn’t going to be able to use it.

Regardless how many of the right people this law would piss off had a Republican written it I’m pretty sure it’s unconstitutional.

Where the sign is displayed is in the upper level of the rotunda in the capitol. It is not on the common path through the building. The bust of George Washington is a destination for tourists, as evidenced by his shiny nose from so many hand rubs. If it wasn’t for the news publicity, most who visit the building wouldn’t even know it was there.

As for those who’s hearts are hardened, well. . . . . .

Mallard T. Drake on December 2, 2008 at 8:41 PM

Ive studied theologies my entire life. Heres some relevant information.
The Winter Solstice has been celebrated in some way or another for thousands of years. In the Northern Hemisphere, the winter solstice is often connected with various religious holy days. Pagan religions associated the winter solstice with significant life changes, intricately linked with the universe and fates that determined the future and effected those lives. This significance can also be found in the Southern Hemisphere, where the Winter Solstice takes place in June.

Solstice” comes from two Latin words: sol (meaning sun) and sistere (to cause to stand still).

a·the·ist (th-st) KEY

NOUN:

One who disbelieves or denies the existence of God or gods.
a·the·ism (th-zm) KEY

NOUN:

Disbelief in or denial of the existence of God or gods.
The doctrine that there is no God or gods.
Godlessness; immorality.

——————————————————————————–
ETYMOLOGY:
French athéisme, from athée, atheist, from Greek atheos, godless : a-, without ; see a- 1 + theos, god; see dhs- in Indo-European roots

Here is my simple thoughts on the matter.
1. The atheists practice atheism. See the above descriptions.
2. Sun worship is a religion whether you have the nards enough to call it one or not. Sun worship versus Son worship, in my book it ranks the same. Trying to call it a science when it is in fact recognizing a philosophy that is based in and on faith. See ancient Greeks for more information.
3. Putting up a sign is just another way for you to come to terms with your ideology. I need no sign, no cross, no one to tell me that my choice of religion is real or not. I need no one to tell me that my choice is okay or not okay. It needs to equal air time to prove itself. It simply exists on faith.

So have your sign and enjoy it. It neither offends me or intimidates me. Your piddly sign will never turn someone who believes into someone who dont believe. It does make the government look silly and weak for caving into your group. But I take no issue with you celebrating your religion as long as you never ever ever take issue with me celebrating mine.

You hit the nail square on. Especially in regards to Wicca. I bear them no ill will, but those I know act like a bunch of LARP types, especially the ones that feel the need to worship nude, or “sky-clad” as they call it. Budding exhibitionists I call ‘em. Englishman Gerald Gardner developed Wicca in the mid-20th century and it is to him that we owe a great deal of what’s passed off these days as “ancient practice and/or Celtic nature worship” by Wiccans.

Are you equating Paganism with atheism? Am I misunderstanding your post?

So what is going to happen when a radical lesbian feminist proposes to display an image of her mammary glands smeared with honey, calling it worship of the earth goddess?

gxpgxp on December 2, 2008 at 9:06 PM

The Atheism Paradox: A denial of any sort of diety so intense in it’s devotion and intolerant in it’s adherents, it’s become a religion in itself, despite a hatred for religion and it’s intolerences being what drove so many of those adherents to it in the first place.

Talk about comming full circle.

I am simply pointing out a religious display for a non-religion. Atheists do not call their philosophy a religion. Something that demands equal time but is not an equivalent. The rest I leave to others who may be interested to investigate on their own. Government officials who cave to this sort of pressure weaken the government as a whole. It is better to use it to make a statement to the entire population such as feel free to practice your own but do not encroach upon anothers right to practice theirs. Let me ask you this, do you feel that atheism is a religion?

Can’t wait, if they’re well-shaped and haven’t succumbed to gravity.

I’m posting this in haste. Unlike the loons who speak in this quote, I have a life.
A life now and a life eternally.
They really need some kind of life.

Plaintiffs also suffer anxiety from the belief that the existence of these unconstitutional laws suggest that their very safety as residents of Kentucky may be in the hands of fanatics, traitors or fools,” according to the suit.

It’s like the pumpkin fest here in Enola, PA. Every year churches set up tables to basically say our doors are open to you. Meanwhile, the atheist table (yes, there is an organization here in central PA) does nothing but post/sell a bunch of obnoxious bumper stickers saying that if you believe in a God you are a friggin’ moron. Many, MANY different bumper stickes, but all basically saying “I am a free thinker, and you’re not”.

DethMetalCookieMonst on December 2, 2008 at 9:25 PM

I you choose not to beleive, then you are still beleiving in that lack of beleif.

paulsur on December 2, 2008 at 9:27 PM

BTW, I’m willing to bet that most of these atheists just love vampire, ghost, and witch stories. That’s usually how they go. It’s kind of sad to watch.

Ever notice how most goths and emos tend to be atheist? They also tend to be depressed all the time. Gee, wonder why.

DethMetalCookieMonst on December 2, 2008 at 9:29 PM

I loved the old joke about the dead atheist: “Laying there in his casket, all dressed up and nowhere to go.” :)

Hey, anythings better than another abortion post!

abobo on December 2, 2008 at 9:33 PM

Wow – these atheists are REALLY religious. Lotta faith there… whole lotta faith ….

These are the same clowns who are suing the city of Rancho Cucamonga over a billboard.

Heh. Their depression is the only rational part of their personalities.

That’s too funny.

Asked whether he was bothered by the atheist display next to his Nativity scene, Wesselius said, “I think the Nativity scene will speak for itself.”

But he added, “I appreciate freedom of speech and freedom of access. That’s why they’re in there, and hey – you know, that’s great.”

Dude’s got a thick skin. Good for him.

I prefer the joke “What does a dyslexic agnostic insomniac do? Lays in bed all night pondering whether or not a dog exists.”

Allahpundit,

You seem like an honest and tolerant atheist, so there’s no contempt for you from me.

The intellegentsia (and I) recoil at the Left wing, oogedy-boogedy branch of the Fundamentalist Atheist Grinches and their armband religion cheap signage.

I don’t think G.W. is too pleased to be in the proximity of such clueless curmudgeons either.

Honestly, I don’t get this. I am a lifelong atheist yet I have always had tremendous respect for a lot of religious people. Not because of what they believe but because of what they do.

I love Christmas. And Hanukkah, and Easter, and Yom Kippur, and Passover, and all the weddings and christenings and other milestone family/religious events I’ve been lucky enough to attend over the years. Although I do not personally believe in the spiritual details, I’d have to be a total idiot not to know and appreciate that my previously unheard-of-in-human-history affluent and free life is a direct result of the Judeo-Christian philosophical tradition.

I detest it when self-important killjoys feel the need to inject their tiny opinions into these grand and venerable traditions. I don’t believe either but the people they’ve chosen to go after are the people to which we owe everything. And by that I mean… every single damn thing.

What’s on display here is not a well-asserted defense of atheism; instead, it’s just the poorest of manners. Without these believers and their eminently rational, intellectual advancements we non-believers would never have had the opportunity to be what we are. Some large amount of respect is in order. Along with a big dose of STFU to the ingrates.

Merry, merry Christmas to all. I may not be where you are but I damn sure know where I came from. Thank you.

What really pisses me off about atheists is they constantly talk about religious tolerance for all but in the world of the heathens there is no room for others to openly and joyously express the tenets of their faith in public. I don’t like it that these faithless bastards are going to burn in hell but I’m not going to curb my faith just because some idiot is offended that he doesn’t know the joy of having Christ as his/her/its savior.
