“Richard Nixon’s crimes were committed purely in the interest of his own political gain,” Mr. Wallace told Mr. Howard before an audience of a few hundred after viewing the filmmaker’s new film, “Frost/Nixon,” which is about the only U.S. president to resign from office.
“I think to compare what Nixon did, and the abuses of power for pure political self-preservation, to George W. Bush trying to protect this country — even if you disagree with rendition or waterboarding — it seems to me is both a gross misreading of history both then and now,” Mr. Wallace said.

Nixonian crime = Crime for which, if a Republican, your ass is grass, but for which a Democrat equals a slap on the wrist and a book deal.
That said, the movie looks kinda interesting, even if Nixon-bashing is so mid-90s (Dems dancing on his grave).

Pushing an old woman to the ground because one doesn’t like her is one thing; pushing an old woman to the ground because a car is about to hit her is another. Intent (mens rea) behind the act is essential in judging the appropriateness of the behavior.
Anyway, both FDR and Lincoln (and Nixon) engaged in far more aggressive and questionable presidential actions against Americans – not aliens – than Bush has ever dreamed of.
To be sure, both those men were operating in a different and more dangerous environment.
But as Wallace points out, you simply cannot compare the actions by Nixon that were directed against his domestic political opponents to those actions – however questionable – made by Bush against enemy alien combatants or their allies during a time of war.

According to CIA Director Hayden, he knows of three people, total, that were ever waterboarded on Bush’s watch. All of them terrorist leaders, and all done before waterboarding was forbidden by legislation.

As I understand it, exactly 3 people were waterboarded, including KSM, the head of finance for al Qaeda and a third guy whose name I don’t recall. Not only was it not illegal to waterboard these al Qaeda leaders it was a moral necessity.
Liberals put the convenience of terrorists on a higher plane than the lives of their intended victims.
This is upside down.

Tommy_G on December 2, 2008 at 11:01 PM
Actually, the clearest and most obvious analogy to Watergate was all the fraud that BHO committed in his campaign. Of course, the BHO numbers were so far beyond the piddling figures of Watergate (perhaps hundreds of millions in illegal donations, and all out in the open) and the abuse of government (especially in Ohio) to further BHO’s political aims were so much more egregious and scary (going after normal citizens, not political operatives) that I find it almost laughable that anyone would think of Bush in this context. Further, to make things really scary, the press was 1000% behind BHO and his frauds – doing a better job as political mouthpiece than Pravda could have ever hoped to have done.
Ron Howard is a moron. He made some good movies, but I can live without them. Nothing important. Better such an idiot should go down in flames. Probably won’t happen, but I can hope.
BHO’s frauds make Watergate look like tiddly winks. And he’s probably going to get away with the biggest fraud, too.

Also recall that our version of waterboarding involves plugging the nose and mouth of the terrorist (usually with saran wrap) before they are dunked in the water, so that they feel like they are drowning, but don’t actually intake any water. The Vietnamese waterboarded “for real” – the victim would actually drown and would need to be resuscitated.
War is not pretty. FDR rounded up over 100k Japanese into internment camps. Truman used nuclear weapons. Dresden was carpet bombed. A great many unseemly things were done during Vietnam.
Bush set up GTMO in order to reduce the need to do extraordinary rendition (which involves us outsourcing real torture to various third world powers) and secret prisons, while still giving our military and intelligence services the ability to get intel out of these clowns. And we did get good intel out of them. And, by the way, they are and were well cared for. These guys all get three hots and a cot, medical care, etc. When they get released from GTMO, they look like they just came from the spa. Did McCain look like that after his stay at the Hanoi Hilton?

There are a ton of things I can think to criticize George W. Bush for as late but Nixonian abuse of power is certainly not one of them. Way to be a sheep, Howard. At least Frost/Nixon’s screenwriter came out and said this wasn’t the kind of reaction he was ever hoping for with the film. Not that he probably minds, being a fellow lefty, but still… at least he wants the film judged on its own storytelling merits, not used as some contemporary voodoo doll.
It happened but Howard didn’t end up directing it; he only produced it. John Lee Hancock directed it and the film stars Dennis Quaid, Billy Bob Thornton and Patrick Wilson, among others. It’s a very good movie and I’d highly recommend checking it out. Certainly doesn’t portray the Mexicans as some sort of misunderstood villains.
Jockolantern on December 3, 2008 at 8:29 AM
Last Saturday I had the misfortune of seeing the theatrical production of “Frost/Nixon” at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. I knew going in that it would be full of the typical liberal claptrap (I have season passes to all the major plays, and entertain business associates at the theater, so I didn’t select this play – it came with the package). Its biggest sin was that it was unrelentingly boring – my wife actually fell asleep on my shoulder for a couple of minutes. And, of course, Nixon (and his military attache) was scripted and acted like a cartoon character.

It’s really interesting how limited entertainment giants out of Hollywood are. They all seem to share the same paradigm, and lately it’s trying to connect or manufacture parallels between the Sixties and today. They should be ashamed of themselves since the actual contradiction is stark.
Richard Nixon was not a likable president, but he brought an end to the Vietnam War with a victory on paper that was betrayed by the enemy and the moonbats in the USA. Opie seems to forget that a Democratic president and congress drafted thousands of American young men and betrayed their honor and sacrifice. How can anyone have lived through those times and missed that part of history? These men served and died in a mismanaged war that was micromanaged by idiot politicians and then came home to be spit on. America should be making movies about that, and how ashamed those people should be for that disgrace, and how that parallels the clueless critics of today.
The fabric of both the enlisted and drafted servicemen that fought in Vietnam is just as honorable and demanding of respect as the people that fight in this war against Islamic terror. The difference in victory, Opie, is that this president stood behind the troops as did his administration. The only other comparison I find is that the Dems are still doing all they can to destroy our military and have no respect for the sacrifice of these fighting people and their families.

Bush will be remembered as a good president who tried to reach across the aisle, made compromises which were not met with fairness, and protected us. It’ll take a few years for the BDS to die out, but he did a good job with what he had.
All we have to remember is accuracy- the nuts on the left were screaming he’d find a way to extend his term, he had shredded the Constitution, kept us in an unwinnable war, etc.
As he calmly transitions out of power on 1/20/09, Obama keeps some of his “unconstitutional” policies in place, and the troops come home in victory we will all be reminded that facts are stubborn things.

Nixon ended the Vietnam War, a war started by reckless democrats. He opened up China, started a dialogue with the Soviets, and saved Israel’s ass by pumping massive arms shipments to them preventing their eradication in the Yom Kippur war…GW broke the backs of tyrants freeing tens of millions. He defended this country preventing another 9-11 and chased al Qaeda to the ends of the earth. Yes, al Qaeda is still active but diminished, discredited and hunted like dogs by the US, Nato, and dozens if not hundreds of allies around the world…Their days are numbered and international jihadism will one day be tossed on the ashheap of history along with communism. Ron Howard is a nobody who lives in neverland making junk for the consumption of fellow socialist…His point of view is meaningless to people who live in the real world.

…on the ashheap of history along with communism.

Why is it then, with all the countries running away from communism, we are stupidly stumbling toward it?
