Murkowski warns Palin: If you want my seat, prepare for war

Two young pols, one with presidential ambitions, the other the daughter of the man her rival beat to become governor, vying to inflict a career-ruining defeat upon her rival. It’s not a primary race; it’s a Lifetime movie of the week.

If it happens, I shall demand to be transferred to Hot Air’s Alaska bureau, that I might taste the drama firsthand.

Murkowski, up for reelection in 2010, is nervously awaiting word on whether John McCain’s former running mate will run against her in the GOP primary. But she says Palin is the one who should be nervous.

“I can guarantee it would be a very tough election,” Murkowski said in an interview…

That argument is not lost on Murkowski, who points to her rising seniority in the Senate and her ascension to the top Republican spot on the Energy and Natural Resources Committee, replacing retiring Sen. Pete V. Domenici (R-N.M.).

“One thing that Alaskans clearly appreciate is seniority,” said Murkowski, who was appointed to the Senate in 2002 by her father, who had just won the governor’s race. “If she were to kind of move me over, if you will, to run for national office again at the expense at this seniority that’s been built, I don’t know if Alaskans would look too favorably on that.

Are Alaskans that attuned to the vagaries of committee assignments? Sufficiently so that they’d rather have seniority on the energy panel than send to the Senate the most famous proponent of drilling in America, who can drive the issue simply by leveraging the media’s obsession with her? If yes, they’re not crazy: Remember, it was Hillary’s inability to convert her celebrity into meaningful power that supposedly drove her to accept the State position. If Palin tries this, though, it almost certainly means she’s going to pass on 2012 and concentrate on 2016. Otherwise, what’s the point? She’ll endure one death match in 2010 to knock off Murkowski — only to turn around immediately and face another in the GOP primaries? Granted, Obama went almost directly from a Senate campaign to a presidential campaign, but (a) he had two years in between to build some very nominal national experience and (b) he desperately needed to raise his media profile before taking a crack at the Democratic nomination. Palin wouldn’t have time for (a) and doesn’t have to worry about (b). If she’s serious about challenging The One, her best bet is running again for governor. If not, bring on the drama.

She has a point. They damn-near re-elected Ted Stevens despite convictions on felony charges.

HotAir lately resembles Lifetime TV more than anything Sarah Palin has done. She’s just going about her business.

Gold and energy prices will be going through the roof. Alaska’s gold mines, opil, and natural gas pipeline will be very important to the nation. Why would she want to go to the Senate?

She needs to finish out her current term, and run (and win) again for governor. This will establish her as a bonafide player. She’ll have plenty of opportunity for national exposure, and she can bone up on international affairs with the First Dude.

Wait.

That came out wrong.

nukemhill on December 2, 2008 at 3:08 PM

1. I agree about Palin going for reelection as governor. Maybe later as a senator.

2. I’ve never heard or read Palin confess she has presidential ambitions, despite the media puffing that idea up from day one. I sure hope she does. But just because a door might open for her in the future, and just because she knows that Republicans love her, does not mean she will walk through that door.

Just an observation.

I think that Josh Painter over at RedState has the right take on this. The gist: two terms as governor, Senate in 2014 against Begich (if at all), and pres in 2016. The whole thing is worth a read though.

jp on December 2, 2008 at 3:19 PM

I think it’s a REALLY bad idea for Palin to run for the Senate. Her appeal is based on two things she would give up by winning; her executive experience, and her role as a Washington outsider. Let’s not get cocky here, folks. We’ve got a few years before the next presidential election. The first order of business, at least from where I sit, is to determine where we stand. At the same time, look at the list of hopefuls (as opposed to obsessing over one messiah for the next four years) with a critical eye.

If she wants to run for POTUS and plans not to seek that seat she should send out some sound bites about being Governor > Senator(i.e. beneath a Govenor), but smartly so it doesn’t come back to haunt IF the POTUS thing falls through and she wants to take that Stevens seat the GOP just lost back in 6 yrs

jp on December 2, 2008 at 3:22 PM

I’ll put my money on Sarah Palin. Murkowski from what I understand is as dumb as a mud fence. Plus Murkowski has never run for a Senate seat before. She was in the House of Representatives and the House Leasder for a year. She was appointed by Daddy which caused so much controversy in Alaska that they changed the rules and Governors can no longer appoint empty Senate seats.

She has some baggage as well. She smells of “Old Boys Club” that Palin destroyed.

From Wiki:
“In July 2007, Murkowski stated she would sell back land she bought from Anchorage businessman Bob Penney, a day after a Washington watchdog group filed a Senate ethics complaint against her, alleging that Penney sold the property well below market value. The Anchorage Daily News noted, “The transaction amounted to an illegal gift worth between $70,000 and $170,000, depending on how the property was valued, according to the complaint by the National Legal and Policy Center.”According to the Associated Press, Murkowski bought the land from two developers tied to the Ted Stevens probe.

In 2008, Murkowski amended her Senate financial disclosures for 2004 through 2006, adding income of $60,000 per year from the sale of a property in 2003, and more than $40,000 a year from the sale of her “Alaska Pasta Company” in 2005.”

Also,” Murkowski is a member of the Republican Main Street Partnership and supports stem cell research. She is also a member of the Republican Majority For Choice, Republicans For Choice, and The Wish List (Women in the Senate and House), a group of pro-choice women Republicans”.

portlandon on December 2, 2008 at 3:22 PM

Lets get this straight. I said it ion the headlines I will say it now.

Lisa Murkowski was put in her fathers, Frank (elected Governor then), seat for Senate. She has actually done more in my opinion then her father has.

NOW Lisa HAS run for re-election 2 years after she was put in that seat. She hasn’t done that bad of a job and has not done her Fathers tactics… and has even stepped away from being like that.

Yes, frank Murkowski is still up here. And right now I think he is “advising” Exxon of all freaking oil companies. What a Dumass!

upinak on December 2, 2008 at 3:26 PM

If Palin tries this, though, it almost certainly means she’s going to pass on 2012 and concentrate on 2016. Otherwise, what’s the point? She’ll endure one death match in 2010 to knock off Murkowski — only to turn around immediately and face another in the GOP primaries? Agreed. I’d also point out:

1. Historically, the Senate doesn’t bring a lot of value to the Presidential race, so there’s little reason to add it to your resume other than just resume padding to some vague notion of “well roundedness”. Obama is the first Senator in a long time to actually win the presidency.

2. If Obama is beatable in 2012 then it’s reasonable to think that a “don’t elect junior Senators with only a couple years experience” meme will be circulating. At that point, Palin can play the “see, I always said I had more executive experience” card.

3. If Obama’s administration is doing well in 2012 and he isn’t vulnerable, then chances are he’s in for 8 years and the only opportunity is to run in 2016. The worst thing you can do for a political career is lose a Presidential election (cf. Gore and Kerry) and running against a strong incumbent is a good way to make that happen. Better to it out and wait for your opportunity while at the same time building your resources.

upinak on December 2, 2008 at 3:33 PM

I think being a Democrat Senator > GOP Senator if goal is to run for POTUS.

Simple reason why: The Media

When the left are out of power, the Dem. Senators are on the National Stage and portrayed as brilliant statesmen by the MSM when the GOP is in the whitehouse.

When a Dem is in the Whitehouse, GOP Senate stars aren’t near as famous(i.e. all over TV with MSM love) and instead they take someone like Newt(who by nature of Congress is more partsian) as face of the Opposition and the MSM then seeks to destroy.

If Palin is in Washington the MSM will paint her as the Devil and destroy her image. Palin in Alaska, she is able to lay low and build her resume. Big problem she has is that Foreign Policy will be a big deal by next election again, she has no experience there. ALthough if Putin really did invade Alaska….;)

jp on December 2, 2008 at 3:34 PM

God, Lisa Murkowski can shove it.

Nepotism is the only thing that got her to the Senate. Sarah Palin has essentially said so, in public, by challenging Lisa’s father in the Republican gubernatorial primary in 2006. The outcry throughout the state against this Stevensian, Youngian, Murkowskian self dealing is evident and Lisa knows it.

Feel free to look up some quotes from Lisa upon the VP pick of Palin. The two don’t like each other and Lisa is now striking out like a wounded cat. Such a typical pol–she’s barely been in the Senate for a full term and she clings to “seniority.” Hasn’t the GOP learned that lesson yet? Fully, harshly, and in the form of a butt whooping from a lightweight like Barack Obama?

That being said, once we look up from the ashheap that Obama will make of this country and struggle to choose our future in 2012, I think the collective electorate won’t ever again poo poo a lack of executive experience. That means Palin should stay PUT and not aspire to be Senator.

- take Ferry to Train to Anchorage

- see Anchorage, then Bus trip to Wasilla with a special stop at the Meat Processing center where Palin takes her Moose and Caribou she kills. (optional Moose hunt for early risers)

- Next stop: Wherever the Commerical Fishing operation operates from?

–Finally a special stop at the tip of Alaska where you really can See Russia from…

jp on December 2, 2008 at 3:41 PM

As an outsider, I think Palin could take Murkowski in a Senate race. But why would she want to?

As others have said here, she can serve out her term, run again for governor, and choose to run for President in 2012 or wait for 2016. Alternatively, she could finish out this term then campaign fulltime if she wants to go all out for President in 2012.

To combine two threads, the speculation that there is some groundwork being laid between the Palin and Thompson camps is intriguing. I don’t know much at this point, but a few websites talk about Jeri on a teamsarah website, etc.

This is nothing more than the media trying to get a fight started to take down Palin

jp.. why not try and order some. Moose is lean.. but not totally gamey. Caribou … oh I love caribou! But we also have Musk-ox (kinda like a Buffalo) and really BIG Elk. Plus King Salmon…

Mat-Valley is where I go for processing

But I buy from Indian Valley

Or go to the best German place (they process also) for Lox!

Order some.. you won’t be disappointed.

I don’t think Benny is an Alaskan.

I wouldn’t have ruled it out, until he insinuated as such.

But I caught benny in a couple fibs concerning Anchorage/Wasilla/Palmer area. I think it has been here though.

I take the opposite approach. By taking away Murkowski’s Senate seat in 2010 Sarah can use that as a launching pad to seriously launch her 2012 Presidential campaign, while spending more time in the Lower 48 to build her organization and raise more money. The counter-argument put forward most often for her not to entertain these thoughts to try for the Senate is that Sarah will soon become one of a hundred and be lost in the scenery or that she will become anoter ‘typical’ Washington politician and thus lose her credibility as ‘a woman of the people’. First, does anybody honestly think that Sarah will be less favored by the spotlight as a US Senator. That’s like saying that Tiger Woods would lose his lustre if he spent more time designing golf courses than playing tournament golf. Let’s get real-Sarah Palin is a superstar and Technopeasant’s number one rule on superstars:they stop being superstars when they cannot perform at a superstar level any longer-age, disease, infirmity; they do lose their superstar status because of change in direction or job; as to the last criticism Sarah is Sarah-if she ‘goes Washington’ on the conservative base they will desert her and the left-wing loons will get their wish; the fear by the left though is that she does not change but instead enhances her image as a major ‘player’ without losing her ‘everywoman and working-man appeal’. And she could double-down. If she decides not to run for the Presidency in 2012 she would be well-positioned by 2016 which would happen to be the end of her Senate term.

Could be worse. The other anti-Palin Trolls haven’t chimed in…yet. Like Romney dude (not real handle). Maybe he filibustered himself out after 72 hours on the same thread…I hope.

Hey, upinak, there are some ladies who fish with their hands for huge catfish down here. It’s called grappling or noodling. Considering the alligator snapping turtles and the gar in the rivers and lakes down here, I don’t think that’s real smart.

Looks like AP may have heard of your reputation.

Hey,

Is the ‘taking him fishing’ a euphemism for what Michael did to Freddo in “The Godfather II”?

I wasn’t sure. Clarification?

Republicans want governors, the American people elect Republican governors to the Presidency

our last Senator to President was Warren G. Harding

the narrative that wins is chief executive riding in to save Washington D.C. from itself

Republicans win as “outsiders”

joey24007 on December 2, 2008 at 4:47 PM

Miss Murkowski if you think this will be war. Then prepare to surender because you will loose just like your dad did.

thmcbb on December 2, 2008 at 4:47 PM

I bet it’s beautiful up there. This summer we had a black bear wander from the Mississippi River Bottoms into a residential area in Northern Missippi, right outside Memphis. They tranquilized him and supposedly “relocated” him. He was first seen down by the Casinos in Tunica, Mississippi. That’s about it.

Sarah needs to stay as Governor and build her credentials. Stay away from the Beltway Elite.

kingsjester on December 2, 2008 at 4:48 PM

This is probably lefty Politico trying to stir up trouble among Republicans, and Lisa Murkowski took the bait. Sarah Palin did knock off Frank Murkowski to become Governor, but that was over an ethics issue over something Palin knows well–the oil and gas industry. But Palin’s beef is probably not against the Murkowski family per se, but against the corrupt, good-ol’ boy way of doing things, personified by Frank Murkowski, Ted Stevens, and Don Young.

Sarah Palin would do better to run for re-election as Alaska Governor in 2010, as an experienced incumbent with notable achievements in the state and national name-recognition due to her VP run.

Lisa Murkowski, despite the nepotism that first brought her to the Senate, has won election in her own right, and will have 8 years of Senate experience by 2010. After Palin’s VP run, Alaska Republicans probably believe that Sarah Palin MIGHT have Presidential ambitions in 2012 if Obama is a failure and looks vulnerable–why would they want Palin to knock off an incumbent Republican Senator in 2010 if Palin might possibly leave the Senate in two years to run for President, whereas Lisa Murkowski (if re-elected) would probably serve the full six years?

Energy policy is one issue where Sarah Palin is very strong and knowledgeable, and if she wants to influence national energy policy and bring the issue to the forefront during an Obama Administration, she could do so by working WITH Lisa Murkowski if Murkowski became ranking Republican on the Senate energy committee. Even Begich, the Democrat elected to Ted Stevens’ old seat, is pro-drilling in ANWR, and Palin might be able to work with him as well.

Sarah Palin and Lisa Murkowski should not waste time in 2010 beating up on each other–they should concentrate on beating Democrats for re-election: Palin for Governor, Murkowski for Senate.

Steve Z on December 2, 2008 at 4:48 PM

Steve Z on December 2, 2008 at 4:48 PM

Steve don’t count on that. Begich has been “trying to get elected” for.. years. He ran for Mayor twice bfore getting elected. He just marginally won this one for Senate. Trust me if those in Fairbanks would have seen or been thru what those in Anchorage have been dealing with concerning Begich.. he would have lost.

Begich is not one I would want to work with. He will show you all his true colors soon enough.

Sarah and Lisa didn’t even go to his “electoral” party when he won. That tells you something right there.
