MSNBC anchor surprised to find terrorism still exists post-Obama

posted at 3:15 pm on December 1, 2008 by Allahpundit

Well, aren’t we all. To think, without the ‘Busters, this moment of glory might have been lost to history:

ALEX WITT: You know, John, and it’s interesting because there are many who had such an optimistic and hopeful opinion of things, and you certainly can’t expect things to change [snaps fingers] on a dime overnight, but there are many who suggested that with the outgoing Bush administration and the incoming Obama administration there would be something of a lull in terrorism attacks. There had been such a global outpouring of affection, respect, hope, with the new administration coming in, that precisely these kinds of attacks, it was thought — at least hoped — would be dampered down. But in this case it looks like Barack Obama is getting a preview of things to come.

No video, alas. Er, who are the “many” who thought jihadists would be giving The One a honeymoon to get himself settled? Didn’t Zawahiri just call him a “house negro”? Didn’t his own VP warn that foreign interests would be downright eager to test a novice? A smart Obama shill would at least argue that it’s because of the outpouring of affection and imminent healing of the globe that terrorists might be especially determined to reassert themselves. That, at least, would follow the theory that all grievances abroad are ultimately reactions to Bush policy rather than independently motivated by, say, death-cult ideology. Witt sounds genuinely mystified, though. Can’t Bin Laden feel the Change?

Incidentally, at least one intel expert does think the attacks were a response to U.S. policy — specifically, Obama’s:

One analyst even described the attacks as a “pre-emptive strike” against Barack Obama’s strategy to put Pakistan and Afghanistan at the centre of US foreign policy.

The United States and its allies now face a balancing act in supporting India’s efforts to investigate the Mumbai attacks, without jeopardizing Pakistan’s crucial support for the Nato campaign in Afghanistan…

[The Pakistani government] has also made it clear that if India again masses troops on the border, Pakistani forces would be diverted away from the tribal areas, allowing militants there to focus on Afghanistan.

“The next 48 hours are critical in determining how things unfold,” a top Pakistani security official told reporters. “We will not leave a single troop on the western border if we are threatened by India.”

If true, it’s a replay of Al Qaeda’s strategy in Iraq: Attack the Shiites to provoke reprisals against the Sunnis, thus radicalizing both sides and making Anbar safer for jihadists. I’m not sure why that theory’s any more likely than the sort of simple fanatic irredentism over Kashmir that’s traditionally motivated terror in India, though. In fact, according to this sterling report in the Journal of how the attack played out, when someone in a group of hostages asked two jihadis why they were doing it, they specifically mentioned incidents of Hindu attacks against Muslims — before proceeding to gun down the entire group (almost). The one jihadi who survived claimed they trained for five months in Kashmir and then took a month off, which means that if this was some sort of plot to outflank Obama, they would have had to start planning before he’d even clinched the nomination.

No matter. Hitchens notes in today’s cry for solidarity with India that he hadn’t yet found any “Western saps” willing to blame this on Bush/Blair foreign policy. Evidently he doesn’t watch CNN. Same principle here as Trutherism, really: It’s comforting to believe Bush knocked down the Towers because Bush, at least, can be easily dislodged. And now he has been, and still. Imagine Alex Witt’s confusion.

Do we honestly care if Pakistan moves troops away from its northern border? They don’t do much now, and it would make it a lot easier for us to selectively place missles and/or special ops teams into the tribal regions.

With Obama’s squishy stance on terrorism, it was inevitable that terrorism would go up after his election. The only question has been if the terrorists would wait until he was in office, or would start in the interim.
The same goes for rouge nations, Russia, and maybe even China.

I would suggest a demonstration.
Set up a bunch of objects, and give a bunch a kids a stick. The objects respond to being poked in one of several ways: not responding, making annoying sounds, dropping a prize, or biting the stick off and going for the arm.
Which one would you poke?

I appreciate the CNN guy on the video. But I can’t believe that Indian in San Diego is blaming India. He says it is incumbent on India to ask Pakistan to ‘help’ solve the problem. He gives the reason that Pakistan will become a failed state.

He says that India shouldn’t blame Pakistan. But I don’t recall a single incident in the past 10 years where Indians went into Pakistan and did what Pakistanis did to India.

I’m tired of these apologists. This guy’s only argument is that ‘25% of the world is Muslim’ so we have to appease them all or they are justified in blowing us up.

Bush’s #1 mistake was in ever ‘partnering’ with Pakistan. Until we wipe out Pakistan and take it over the way we took over Iraq (or allow and assist India in removing the partition through force), the Muslim population will continue to kill innocent people in the name of Islam and blame it on the victims.

Pakistan is our #1 enemy in the War On Terror. America’s problem is that Bush still doesn’t realize that.

Irvin88 on December 1, 2008 at 4:01 PM

Pakistan is only schizophrenic because the US funds they get to ‘fight the war on terror’ is the largest industry in their country. If we stopped giving them money, they’d be #1. Iran doesn’t have a nuclear bomb, nor do they have Bin Laden.

We should have dealt with Iran by securing the Iraqi boarders. There should not have been a single Iranian fighter in Iraq once we went in there. Of course, I realize that securing the border is not one of our governments’ strong suits. . . but that should be the simplest thing for a military superpower to do.

And he takes the blame over and over. And yet who was the guy who has had to keep us safe after 9/11, who is the guy who keeps warning that these things are going to happen, that the threat continues to grow, that we have to be vigilant and fight our enemies abroad so we don’t have to fight them here. Who thought it was important enough to go to war to rid Iraq of a ruthless and cold-blooded dictator with terrorist ties and wmd ambitions? Who knew the importance of establishing a strong democratic ally in the Middle East? Who takes seriously the threat of nuclear weapons by a lunatic in Iran? Ha, I’m glad he uses the proper English name for this city. I don’t care if they “changed” the name (that is, adopted the Gujarati name instead of the Hindi form Bambai).

Using exonyms is the norm in any language. (America, for example, is Americhe in Italian, Runa Simi in Qechua, Emerîka in Kurdish, Ixachitlān in Nahuatl, Ketxua in Basque, Amerikí in Greek, Amerikia in Arabic, &c. In other words, people adapt the name to their language, use an old name or translate.

Should we say Mullywood? Or, if the Germans suddenly changed Berlin to Burlon, would we do that?

I guess some people have decided that Islamic terrorists only came into existence during the current Bush Administration, conveniently forgetting that the first World Trade Center bombing and the African embassy bombings and the Cole bombing all happened with a Democrat in the White House. A Democrat, I should add, that the rest of the world supposedly loved as much as they now adore Obama.

Bennett on December 1, 2008 at 11:45 PM

A powerful lesson I learned in Iraq and Afghanistan is that Middle Eastern cultures value one virtue above all others. It isn’t generosity, compassion, kindness or even the much vaunted Middle Eastern hospitality. The one virtue they value most is strength.

No one in the Middle East will respect someone they perceive as weak, and in a shame/honor culture, respect is ones most precious possession. That’s why Saddam Hussein was seen as an Arab hero, even in countries of which he was an enemy, like Saudi Arabia. They perceived him to be strong because of his defiance of the West.

How do Middle Easter cultures treat those they see as weak? An Arab proverb tells us, “a dying camel invites a thousand knives”. I believe that says it all.

People in the Middle East hate President Bush, but they respect him because he has displayed strength. The same cannot be said of the President-Elect.
