Monsters of State

posted at 9:47 am on December 1, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

That may sound like a football team, but it may better describe a State Department headed by Hillary Clinton with Samantha Power working as a liaison to Barack Obama.  According to reports, Obama will announce just that combination today, putting together his chief opponent over the last two years with an adviser who famously described her as a “monster”.  But which of the two present the bigger danger?

Samantha Power, the Harvard professor who was forced to resign from Barack Obama’s presidential campaign last spring after calling Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton “a monster,” is now advising the president-elect on transition matters relating to the State Department — which Clinton is slated to head.

Power is listed on Obama’s transition Web site as part of the team reviewing national security agencies. Her duties, according to the site, will be to “ensure that senior appointees have the information necessary to complete the confirmation process, lead their departments, and begin implementing signature policy initiatives immediately after they are sworn in.”

In short, she is part of a team that is likely to work directly with Clinton, a potentially awkward situation for the two women. Obama is expected to officially announce Clinton as his choice for secretary of state after the Thanksgiving holiday.

Earlier, I wrote that the Scowcroftian direction of Obama’s foreign-policy choices represented a change in direction from his campaign rhetoric, and a welcome development. Power’s inclusion on the team represents something very different, and a threat to Israel. Let’s recall Power’s ideas about Israel:

As I noted in early October, this clip has some remarkable insight into Power and her foreign-policy direction. First, she adopts the same conspiratorial thinking about the Jews in the US, as if we’d have no better reason to ally ourselves with a Western-style democracy in the Middle East.   Power then suggests that the West should stage a massive occupation of Israel to neutralize the IDF in favor of groups like Hamas as a policy to settle the Middle East conflict.

Sounds great … for the terrorists.

Obama didn’t kick Power off his team over these remarks.  He bounced her for calling Hillary a “monster”.  If Power gives any indication of Obama’s foreign policy direction, then Hillary won’t be the only one.

Good to see that Bambi is including the stark raving lunatic community in his administration.

It’s really starting to “look like America”.

Who will be his first homeless bum appointment? Convicted felon appointment? Member of the deceased-American community, since they are they most loyal Democrats of all?

But…what if Powers finds out that Hillary {found} a Jewish grandfather was sitting in her family tree while campaigning in Florida?
I think Powers was chosen to remind HClinton that Obama won the Presidency. It won’t be awkward at all. Hill might become quite chummy with the guard holding her leash, if I may mix a few metaphors.

According to a few websites, Politico, for ex., Obama got 78% of the Jewish vote.

Elections have consequences. Don’t worry about Israel or Samantha Power. Let the American Jewish community accept the consequences of its actions.

JiangxiDad on December 1, 2008 at 10:03 AM

That woman thinks she knows everything and the press treats her that way.
She will work closely with Obama and will most likely be contrarily to Hillary.
I feel for the Israelis. These two women are not all that great for the state of Israel. I recall Hillary’s friendly relationship with that disgusting Arafat and his wife. Very vomit-inducing.
I am tired of these pseudo-republicans treating Obama as if he were such a “centrist” or “republican-lite.”
His appointments are not that impressive to me. They are all very liberal and failures.
Gates, appointed by President Bush, is Obama’s only acceptable post decision.

This is just another further indications that Obama’s “recourse well” is rather shallow.
He just doesn’t have the experience to draw on noted and stable advisers. He has to rely on “activists”, the people he has relationships with, he has so little time in national politics, he has to draw on these obscure people, who have not been “vetted”.

“Although few have focused on this, the Democratic Party today is also in a strong position to show that it will be more reliable in keeping Americans safe during the twenty-first century,” she wrote. “If the party succeeds in doing this, it will not only wake up the United States and the world from a long eight-year nightmare;

I really would like to know why she thinks the dem. party’s positioning of strength to show us something is more important than actually doing it.
And I’m not sorry to point out, that in her little eight-yr long “nightmare”, President Bush has kept us safe since 9/11. Something I’m a bit skeptical about the 0ne being able to do.

JiangxiDad on December 1, 2008 at 10:10 AM

The other thing that might make it a little awkward with Hillary is that Power has been an outspoken critic of Bill Clinton’s failure to intervene quickly in the Rwandan Genocide. Power’s point was, even though events moved quickly in Rwanda, Clinton’s choice to ignore it till only the suffering was left to respond to, emboldened other genocidal forces around the world. If the US doesn’t care enough to intervene, to stop genocide in progress, then what’s the risk to committing it? Very little.

Am I the only person who found her communication skills stilted, and that she was heavily habituated toward that faux, contrived, rehearsed-over-the-years form of snobbish, overarching so-called intellectual elitism?

Also, how many “ums” and I means, aaahs, and the like has this women filled her dialogue with?

Bottom line, I found listening to this clip a labor of endurance and patience, for she certainly came off as an arrogant, condescending, self centered snob, and clearly disrespects freedom and liberty, as she clearly indicated as she equated Israel with the violent Palestinians (her mention of “both sides” ignoring that Israel is on the defensive, while Palestinians habitually engage in violent attacks based on manifest, expressed hatred and their intention to drive the Jews out of Israel and make Israel theirs from the River to the Sea.

High position in government is no place for an overly complicated, snobbish, condescending, misdirected “intellectual” like her.

Remember, Hillary is a pragmatist – sure she’s a big Israel supporter when she needs Jewish votes in NY, but if the wind is blowing the other way in the Obamastration, don’t you think she’ll go along to get along and sell Israel down the river in a heartbeat? Remember when she planted the big sloppy kiss on Mrs. Arafat right after Arafat described how Israel was using chemical weapons against Palestinian kids? Hillary was a useful (though inadequate) stick to hit Obama with – but she’s not our friend.

…and she speaks of imposing her will on a democratic state in a troubled region as troubling, and then interjects the dreaded “…but…”, which, as we all know, invalidates all that comes before it to underscore how seriously she takes all that she’ll say afterwards…translated into plain English, she’s saying:

“We’re a grown-up democracy (ref.: “liberal democracy”), and we have the duty to smack Israel around for picking on the murderers we on the Left support!”

…this gal has bought the entire enchilada…what does she teach at Harvard? “Alice In Wonderland” from the inside?

There will be many people at the Pentagon,NSA,State Dept.,etc. getting their best “I got my ass covered” mojo going because this level of appeasement and weakness is going to cause big problems internally with people who actually understand the terrorist threat and make our enemies like Ahmadinejad,Hamas,al-qaeda,and Putin jump for joy.

Many people in our intelligence agencies are not going to take the blame for attacks brought on by the appeasement policies of liberals like this.

This is the “hope and change” that Ahmadinejad was hoping for.

UltimateBob:

“True, they don’t have a clue what they were enthusiastic about, they were just enthusiastic.”

I think it’s probably more accurate to say that myopic folks on the right have no clue what Obama voters were enthusiastic about. Only raging ideologues on the left will fault Obama for not toeing the lines he set in his campaign (while Republicans are sighing in relief, of course).

The Obama vote was a vote to expunge the past 8 years of Republican “rule” — except as a baseline against which anything Obama does will be measured an improvement, and everything he fails to do will already have been rendered impossible by the fecklessness which preceded him.

Yes, let’s invade Israel.
Brilliant.

TexasJew on December 1, 2008 at 12:50 PM

The cat fights between the two probably won’t happen. As long as Obama spell out exactly who has the inner track to his ears.
Sir Napsalot on December 1, 2008 at 12:21 PM

That’s the whole point of this exercise. Obama is going to make the chain of command as screwed-up as possible. He’s made a career out of never being responsible for anything, and that’s how he plans to continue.

Are you saying that if Barry is a “Do-Nothing” President, it is Booosh’s fault?

This lady should certainly get the rest of the world to love the new U.S.S.A. She fits right in with the U.N. and most of the Messiah’s socialist plans for our country.

That was my reaction…what kind of “intelligent” person would recommend invading Israel?
Just the suggestion is so strange it make you not believe that anyone is that stupid, therefore she must not have said it.
And that will be the response…

First, she adopts the same conspiratorial thinking about the Jews in the US, as if we’d have no better reason to ally ourselves with a Western-style democracy in the Middle East.

There’s nothing conspiratorial about the influence of the Israeli lobby in Washington, it’s entirely out in the open. It’s not that there isn’t any reason why the US might want to ally with Israel, the question is what the alliance entails. The US has behaved in recent years as if the importance of Israel to the US strategically has somehow increased, when the reality is that it has radically decreased since the end of the Cold War.

alex342 on December 1, 2008 at 1:24 PM

Boy she sure did speak in a lot of generalities. My head hurt after listening to her tripe.
Evidently this is not a good time to be an Israeli if you’re looking to the US for help.
Let’s give $$ & troops to the poor oppressed Muslims in the area. Yeah.
After all, they’re the ones calling for the genocide of the Jews constantly. So is their Koran.
So tell my why again Israel is the one to worry about perpetrating genocide against the Palestinians?

She didn’t suggest invading Israel. She suggested that a peacekeeping force be stationed there, which would obviously necessitate the consent of the Israeli government and the cooperation of the IDF. Is it a good idea? I would say no, but at least criticize her for what she said and not what you imagine she said because you’re too lazy to pay attention.

alex342 on December 1, 2008 at 1:26 PM

It is also interesting to note that she refers to us as a liberal democracy & talks of lesser evils, intimating how democracy may not have a place in the grand scheme of things bcs we have to control certain areas.
Hmmmmm…..

Welcome to Elitism 101. That’s not just the response; that’s what she believes herself. She’s been told so often how “intelligent” she is, that she feels no obligation whatsoever to refrain from constantly saying things that are patently moronic.

It’s not HER job to say things that objectively make sense; it’s OUR job to try and glean some sort of reason from her convoluted gibberish. And when we fail, that just proves how despicably “unprogressive” we are.

I wonder if the press will cover for this administration, unlike how they treated Bush’s.
Should be entertaining.
