Zogby on 2012: Palin leads among Republicans, Romney leads among all voters

Check that: Romney barely leads among all voters, within the margin of error. But here’s evidence, in case more was needed, of how sharply conservatives’ view of the ‘Cuda diverges from America’s. Among Republicans, it’s Palin 24.4, Mitt 18.1, Jindal 15.6; among everyone, Mitt 13.7, Palin 13.4, Jindal 12.5.
What happened to Huck, who was in the thick of things when Gallup recently asked a similar question? Palin happened to Huck:
Among Republicans, she gets the support of 30% of Born-Again Christians, 32% of weekly churchgoers, 34% of National Rifle Association members, 28% of current gun owners and 29% of self-identified conservatives. More GOP support comes from 32% of blue collar workers, 30% who shop weekly at Wal-Mart, 28% of NASCAR fans and 25% of both those with children under 17 and those with family members in the military…
Palin looks to be stealing Huckabee’s thunder among Republican religious conservatives and working class voters. Huckabee is an ordained Southern Baptist minister, and his highest GOP totals still come from Born-Again Christians (15%) and weekly churchgoers (18%), but those numbers are about half of those drawn by Palin. Despite his populist economic message, he wins only 10% of blue collar Republicans.
There’s your explanation for why he’s been taking shots at her lately, in case it wasn’t already clear. Interesting to see Jindal’s numbers so high, though, given how comparatively low his profile is and how poorly he fared in the Gallup poll. As another young rock-star “future of the party” governor, I wonder if he isn’t peeling votes away from Palin among people who’ve soured on her for whatever reason. Exit invitation: Go ahead and tell me that the only reason she polls so much lower among all voters is because Democrats fear her. You know you want to.

If you want her for governor don’t you want her to run for Potus also?
the_nile on November 29, 2008 at 1:00 PM
Yeah, could work to her advantage. Her campaign will need to operate with scrutiny toward how issues play in Alaska as well as with a national audience. If she campaigns well and wins in a tough environment it will help her credibility even more than a walkover would.
dedalus on November 29, 2008 at 1:01 PM
Even seasoned politicians make mistakes–look at George Allen or Trent Lott undone by a single slip of the tongue. The good news for Palin is that the heightened attention on her reelection bid will increase the national bounce that she would get out of a win.
dedalus on November 29, 2008 at 1:07 PM
My candidate? That’s easy; name the GOP candidate who will:
End Social Security & Medicare
End Socialized Schools
End Welfare
Close the IRS and Initiate a Flat Tax
Dismantle the Federal Reserve
Limit Interest Rates to .05% for All Lending & Borrowing to Minimize Inflation
End Foreign Speculation on Domestic Food, Cloth, Real-Estate, Shipping, Currency, & Energy
Expel the U.N.
Expel the Hostile Invaders
Veto Medical, Science, Farm, & Trade Subsidies
Outlaw Unions
Repeal Union-Style National Labor Laws & Minimum Wage
Unhinder Domestic Petroleum, Nuclear, Coal, & Hydro
Prosecute Traitors in the Press
Bomb Mecca into Poison Dust
Any one of those actions left undone would be cancer for a nation, yet we suffer from all this and more besides. My candidate? That would be Nobody, since Nobody will do what is right.

dedalus: this is the calculated risk that SP faces if she runs for re-election, but she could also promote the fact that she beat the ‘Obama machine’ if she does prevail in 2010. Eric makes the point that the folks in Alaska will be happy that she will be running for POTUS after she is re-elected in 2010. Perhaps I am being too circumspect but I am dubious that SP will be able to explain away the ‘desertion’ argument completely, especially with the MSM all over Alaska 24/7 comparing Sarah to Judas and betraying Alaska for ‘thirty pieces of silver’. Am I being too harsh and cynical in my forecast? Perhaps. But could anybody have foreseen on August 29th that the former head of the Oil and Gas Regulatory agency of Alaska and the current governor of Alaska could be protrayed as a bumbling idiot and buffoon and that it actually took hold and began to resonate among the average voter in the Lower 48? With the MSM and PDS (Palin Derangement Syndrome) anything is possible.

Did you all not hear what the Turkey butcher said to the media a couple days after the Turkey butchering incident?
He was pissed at all the negative media she had recieved and simply said:
“Don’t mess with our Governor up here.”
That’s what Alaskans think of their beloved Sarah. They’d just assume seccede from the rest of the United States, if the Dems tried to come after her in her own backyard.
Remember, it was politically incorrect to say this during the election, but Sarah does have some strong ties to the Alaska Independence Party.
ericdondero on November 29, 2008 at 1:21 PM
If Palin is the nominee of the party, expect another loss. We’ll have to go with Mitt this time.
nazo311 on November 29, 2008 at 1:24 PM
Don’t get me started on Romney’s flip-flopping ass.
Jim62sch on November 29, 2008 at 1:28 PM
I wouldn’t worry about the desertion issue. Most politicians deny seeking a higher office and then subsequently are “convinced by their supporters” or believe it is “essential for the greater good” that they reach for the next rung on the ladder. The only bigger lie is the line “I have no interest in being Vice President” that every primary candidate is forced to say.
Probably only Sherman made good on a Shermanesque promise–the rest of the politicians get a pass.
dedalus on November 29, 2008 at 1:32 PM
Whatever. If we depended on polls 3.5 years out, this last election would have been between Giuliani and Clinton.
angelat0763 on November 29, 2008 at 1:37 PM
Clinton wasn’t irrelevant , and where did Obama come from.
the_nile on November 29, 2008 at 1:42 PM
angelat0763: as opposed to the last election where unpredictability reigned supreme I strongly believe we have before us the players that are going to enter the Presidential ring in 2012. For the Democrats obviously it will be Obama; for the GOP it could be Sarah Palin, especially if the conservative movement coalesces around her as time marches on. In boxing terms we may be looking at a rematch for ‘the heavyweight championship of the world.’ It may be as simple as that-anticlimactic yes; unexciting no.
technopeasant on November 29, 2008 at 1:44 PM
from MooseChic in Free Republic: “The next 4 years will see the metamorphosis of Sarah from a small state, not exposed to the national media Governor to a confident, well-trained leader. Just look at how a butterfly starts it life humbly as a caterpillar and evolves into a beauty…Sarah needs the counselling of some Kissinger, Karl Rove type like old war horse to fine tune her for the Presidency. She will get it. She is one of those true leaders that happen very rarely in national politics.”
technopeasant on November 29, 2008 at 1:55 PM
Obama may be like the heavyweight champion of the world who wants to take on all challengers for his title except for the only person who has a legitimate chance to dethrone him-Sarah Palin.
technopeasant on November 29, 2008 at 2:12 PM
Exactly. Obama is Apollo Creed and Ivan Drago merged into one body. Sarah is Rocky Balboa, most famed for being able to shrug off punishment that would kill others.
Jim62sch on November 29, 2008 at 2:19 PM
I like Mitt, but could you kindly explain what appeal he has to critical libertarian voters?
Mitt just made a major flub in backing the Anti-Marijuana side, in the Medical Marijuana initiative in Michigan. He gave them $300,000. But the Pro-Marijuana side won with a comfortable margin.
But worse news for Mitt, Libertarians took notice of his slap in the face. Marijuana is a big issue with all libertarians, including those of us who are more conservative-friendly libertarians.
Mitt’s got some “splainin’” to do to the libertarian wing of the GOP before he can count on our support.
ericdondero on November 29, 2008 at 2:32 PM
Oh joy, more Palinmania. Lets just give up independents and winning elections for 40 years and call it a day OK?
Squid Shark on November 29, 2008 at 2:33 PM
I am looking forward to seeing Sarah in Augusta Ga on Monday…I would like to see her run for Pres, but I like Mitt a lot too. I think Mitt may have a better chance at winning though. It would be interesting to see them both as running mates.
Right now, I am mainly concerned about that One really screwing up the country.
mindhacker on November 29, 2008 at 2:34 PM
There is a fine line between social conservatives who choose to dictate public social policy and social conservatives who choose to live their life in a socially conservative fashion. I believe SP is the latter, and that is why I support her.
technopeasant on November 29, 2008 at 2:38 PM
exactly, what we need is to run more Bob Doles, John McCains and Christopher Shays
these guys really bring in the “independents and moderates”
The Republican party does horrible when we run conservatives … I mean Ronald Reagan was poison to the “independents” , he was a right-wing nut
he never accomplished anything
right?
joey24007 on November 29, 2008 at 2:41 PM
If winning “independents” means sacrificing principles and becoming Demo-lites, I’ll take integrity over winning elections. Winning then becomes meaningless.
ddrintn on November 29, 2008 at 2:41 PM
Squid Shark:If you are basing your premise on the results of the 2008 election that SP can’t win independents, you must not forget who was on the top of the ticket-perhaps McCain and his support of the bailout and George Bush was the primary reason that Independents deserted the GOP or perhaps conservative leaning Independents spurned McCain because of his support for comprehensive immigration reform or McCain-Feingold. It’s not that simple to suggest that SP could not attract Independents in 4 years. Issues and perceptions change.
technopeasant on November 29, 2008 at 2:49 PM
Great point….
The Squids of the world want us to be DEM LITE. Why would anyone want the LITE version when they can have the full on version. Many GOP voters stayed home this time. The GOP needs to stick to its principles…it is that simple.
I truly have tired of the Squids trying to distort why we lost to make gains in the party. It is a game to them and their cohorts in crime are DEMS and the MSM . That should tell you something.

This video exemplifies why SP is a rising star and her candidacy cannot be dismissed by anybody who has a basic understanding of politics: she has the three ingredients necessary to be a successful politician: moxie, charisma, and an unshakeable belief of what is right.

It was one of the coolest experiences of my life.
Just 3 days before I waved a sign with Sarah and 40 other volunteers on the busiest street corner in downtown Anchorage.
I gotta tell ya, we didn’t think we’d win. That day a poll came out had Sarah down by 5 points. But she ended up winning over Tony Knowles by 10.
Sweetest feeling you could have ever imagined.

Sarah talked in an interview recently that success is equal to where preparation met opportunity. Indeed, Sarah was successful being McCain’s running mate. However, as reported yesterday in Time Magazine, Fred Davis, McCain’s advertising guru, said that McCain wasn’t prepared to take advantage of the opportunity to go after Obama and his associations because of charges of racism. For McCain better to be called a loser and sacrifice the exceptionalism of America to Obama and his hordes than to be labelled a racist.

The 80’s were over a loooong time ago yet every debate and on every message board it’s reagan reagan reagan, he’s the great right-wing messiah, he is to you guys what judy garland is to gay people. put Reagan, who is long dead, and Palin, who is a moron and a loser, in the past and move into the 21st century already! In 2000, the party was smart enough not to let Quayle’s candidacy last to Iowa, and Palin deserves a similar fate.

With these trolls now present on this blog we have an inkling of what Sarah faces if she decides to run for President in 2012. Multiply it by a million times and you’ll then realize how difficult Sarah’s challenge will be to unseat Obama. For that reason alone it more important than ever for the conservative movement to coalesce around Sarah as early as possible if she passes their muster.

uh looks wouldn’t be an issue, try intelligence or just plain competence, neither of which Palin exhibited on the trail this year. she is a joke to anybody but the hard-core red-meat conservatives and deservedly so, if she’s the nom in 2012 she will suffer a McGovern-style blowout.

joey24007 on November 29, 2008 at 4:23 PM
Noneya: remember looks, charisma and charm are God-given talents that Sarah has in abundance; specific knowledge and becoming more conversant with national issues will come with political maturity and time; forever and forever you will cite a lack of intelligence but in 2+ years you will no longer be able to use the ‘competence’ argument. Two recent examples from sports: Drew Bledsoe to Tom Brady; Tom Brady to Matt Cassell.

Noneya: you must not have been following NE Patriots football; when Drew Bledsoe was injured in the 2nd game of the 2001 season the pundits all thought the Patriots were finished. All Tom Brady did was to win the Super Bowl. Now this season when Tom Brady went down in the first game Matt Cassell took over. He hadn’t started a game since high school. Again the doomsayers were out. Sure Cassell hasn’t brought the Pats to the playoffs yet and may not but very few doubt that he is not competent and as a free agent next year will command a serious look by teams needing a starting QB. All I am saying is this: Sarah will merit a serious look if she decides to run in 2012. She may not be chosen, but again she is in the mix. To deny that is to deny that Obama wasn’t in the mix during the 2008 election cycle when Hillary was perceived by the MSM to be in the lead. Sure I am a partisan but I am also a realist. If the GOP or Sarah screws up I will call it like I see it. But to attribute eternal incompetence to anybody who is currently the governor of a state is completely ludicrous, let alone to anybody who devotes himself or herself to a consistent diet of steady improvement and heightened proficiency.

Go ahead and tell me that the only reason she polls so much lower among all voters is because Democrats fear her. You know you want to.
*yaaawn*
Yup. She polls low among Dems for the inverse reason that McCain polled so well. They know she can beat them.
They fear, once she enters the theater as the star freed from the oh-so-long-ago supporting role under McCain, that she will dominate the “among all voters” numbers.
Their adolescent personal attacks are the delicious proof. If they had substantive political arguments against her, they sure take pains to avoid them.
They’re sweating like a HotAir troll trying to read.

Squid Shark, here’s my definition of HotAir.com Troll:
Anyone who opposes Sarah Palin for President 2012.
This website, as presented by it’s Senior Editor Ed Morissey is “libertarian-conservative.” Ed is a libertarian-conservative. Michelle Malkin who founded this site is a libertarian-conservative. And guess what? Sarah Palin is a libertarian-conservative.
So, I hate to be an Enforcer here. Haven’t been given that badge of honor from my friend Ed yet. But it’s very simple:
If you oppose Sarah Palin, you oppose libertarian-conservatism, and are thus out of step with HotAir.com. And you are, in my eyes, and in the eyes of a great many others here, a Troll.

the_nile on November 29, 2008 at 5:30 PM
Saltysam: Just like in the days of Rome the elites don’t want Sarah to cross the Rubicon and enter the gladiator’s arena; once she does and she performs well she will own the loyalty of the spectators and in turn enhance her standing among some elites. Once she penetrates that barrier she will be on her way. The trick is to never let her enter the arena and compete.
technopeasant on November 29, 2008 at 5:31 PM
I also don’t get the enthusiasm for Jindal at the expense of Palin. One of the few reasons I can come up with is that lots of people have been *****-whipped by the MSM into hating Palin; a kinder description might be “Stockholm syndrome”. I like both without having to despise one or the other. It’s still a long way off to 2012.

SP is ‘trouble’ for the Republicans as Tyrell Owens is ‘trouble’ for the Dallas Cowboys. Both exude a great deal of confidence, have charisma, have a great deal of talent, are proven performers and are extremely controversial. Ask the Dallas Cowboys and Tony Romo if they would prefer that Owens weren’t on their team. Here is approximately what they would say: “Hey look, TO is a great receiver, a Hall of Famer-with that comes a strong, dynamic personality that wants to perform at the highest level-because of that he attracts a lot of attention-a lot good, but some bad-it goes with the territory-but I’d rather be a winner with Owens in the spotlight than a loser with mediocrity that hides its light under a bushel and doesn’t invite criticism.

I have just been watching some John Wayne movies of TCM and AMC TV TODAY and come to the conclusion either you loved the movies of the Duke or you hated them. There is no in-between. The main reason is that in the movies John Wayne was straightforward and confident in his attitude and beliefs, astute but with a lot of common sense, displayed no psychological pretense, spoke in language that anybody could understand, and knew what he wanted and then with vigor and determination proceeded to get there despite the obstacles placed in his path. The 21st century version of John Wayne is Sarah Palin. Either you love her or you hate her. There are very few in between. This may be a nagging problem for her in the future or it may be the reason she prevails in 2012. Time will tell. Remember John Wayne had a 40 year film career.

Bull****. Sarah Palin didn’t make McCain lose. The “financial meltdown” made McCain lose. Palin gave him a boost over Obama in the polls. Funny how few remember that.
And we don’t want a woman President just like we didn’t want a black one, especially one from Chicago.Pffft.
And in McCain we did run Bob Dole again. How’d it work out?

You mean her accent? Otherwise she exercises her rhetoric pretty much like any other pol.

By the way, “deer in the headlights” isn’t what comes to mind as far as Palin is concerned. Let’s see how you would look after such a sliming treatment. She strikes me as being hard as nails.

You need to re-watch that segment. Biden said something, Palin had no response and she said ” You…are…raising the white flag of surrender”

I dont mind her accent, it is no more detrimental than my own southern accent.

What else would call it (the white flag of surrender) when your opponent favors withdrawing his country’s troops from the theatre of war before an armistice is signed or victory is declared? If you hate Sarah you hate her for her honesty and sassiness, not for her stupidity and incompetence.

And once again, I dont hate Governor Palin, this is the same reaction I hear from Evangelicals when I dont feel the need to be proselytized.
“OMG you HATE Christians, you want to PERSECUTE ME!”

Face to face with a buffoon bloviating about how we and the French kicked Hezollah out of Lebanon, I might have ignored him as well.
