Zogby on 2012: Palin leads among Republicans, Romney leads among all voters

posted at 4:30 pm on November 28, 2008 by Allahpundit

Check that: Romney barely leads among all voters, within the margin of error. But here’s evidence, in case more was needed, of how sharply conservatives’ view of the ‘Cuda diverges from America’s. Among Republicans, it’s Palin 24.4, Mitt 18.1, Jindal 15.6; among everyone, Mitt 13.7, Palin 13.4, Jindal 12.5.

What happened to Huck, who was in the thick of things when Gallup recently asked a similar question? Palin happened to Huck:

Among Republicans, she gets the support of 30% of Born-Again Christians, 32% of weekly churchgoers, 34% of National Rifle Association members, 28% of current gun owners and 29% of self-identified conservatives. More GOP support comes from 32% of blue collar workers, 30% who shop weekly at Wal-Mart, 28% of NASCAR fans and 25% of both those with children under 17 and those with family members in the military…

Palin looks to be stealing Huckabee’s thunder among Republican religious conservatives and working class voters. Huckabee is an ordained Southern Baptist minister, and his highest GOP totals still come from Born-Again Christians (15%) and weekly churchgoers (18%), but those numbers are about half of those drawn by Palin. Despite his populist economic message, he wins only 10% of blue collar Republicans.

There’s your explanation for why he’s been taking shots at her lately, in case it wasn’t already clear. Interesting to see Jindal’s numbers so high, though, given how comparatively low his profile is and how poorly he fared in the Gallup poll. As another young rock-star “future of the party” governor, I wonder if he isn’t peeling votes away from Palin among people who’ve soured on her for whatever reason. Exit invitation: Go ahead and tell me that the only reason she polls so much lower among all voters is because Democrats fear her. You know you want to.

Sarah Palin paid her own way through school, winning beauty pageants and basketball scholarships to help with tuition.

There is no rule that all presidential candidates must come from privileged backgrounds and attend Ivy League schools.

Sarah Palin started at the most rudimentary municipal levels of government, the PTA, and worked her way up, taking on entrenched interests along the way. She is a successful and popular governor, a role model to women who balances home life and career, and she lives by her conservative values in a way that has impressed even her opponents, as well as inspired the Republican base.

chunderroad on November 29, 2008 at 3:28 AM

General voters prefer Romney? Yeah, that’s why he won so many primaries.

When Palin pick was introduced, some of the lefty blogs immediately began to dream up Mitt Romney as the more electable candidate. Maybe that sentiment is spilling into this poll.

Could this be the Operation Chaos from the Democrat side to make sure Romney hacks like you Allah continue their efforts to diminish Gov.Palin?

promachus on November 29, 2008 at 3:28 AM

When were discussing not-so-nice facts about the Palin gals, NOW you want to be left alone. Hahaha!

The Romney article was written by Earl Ofari Hutchinson, an author and political analyst.

Shelby on November 29, 2008 at 3:24 AM

Which facts did I miss? You’ve been calling for the Palins to wear the scarlet letter for the past hour now, with nothing else at all to add to the discussion. That’s the best you got?

I don’t care if Arianna Huffington invited commentary from a real political analyst instead of Alec Baldwin, Matt Damon or Sean Penn. I don’t give their site traffic by clicking on their links. The comments are vulgar and disturbing. And if you cannot add any insight of your own to an issue that you seem really bothered by, then your opinion is worthless and so are your links.

chunderroad on November 29, 2008 at 3:33 AM

I guess Sarah and Bristol are pretty darn special, huh?! Cause you know it’s the standard “operating” procedure in the Palin household to get pregnant before marriage…

Shelby on November 29, 2008 at 3:17 AM

It’s the standard in the Palin family that women share their bodies with men who love them and will support their decision to keep their child should she become pregnant. Abortion was not the choice for Sarah or Bristol.

No wonder your pathologically hatred for the Palins which goes beyond the mere political.

chunderroad on November 29, 2008 at 3:23 AM

Nope. We just don’t like the hypocrites, that’s all.

Shelby on November 29, 2008 at 3:34 AM

It’s the standard in the Palin family that women share their teenage bodies with men who are not their husbands who love them and we will support their sinful decision to have unmarried sex.

500-plus comments…the gist of which consists of liberals coming here and telling Conservatives who we should place in contention for the Presidency in 2012, and deriding Sarah Palin in all sorts of ways, as well.

We tried that recently, letting Liberals chose our Conservative candidate, and McCain was the result. Didn’t work out so well.

Given the vitriol from the Left thus far regarding Palin…four years out from the elections…seems they are a bit afraid of her stepping back into the ring.

If it scares a liberal…then something is working, and something is worth exploring further.

I still like her, she seems to be a very nice person with a full life…in a good way. I think THAT makes people jealous, especially women that wanted ‘that’ kind of person to be on the left. That’s where most of the vitriol came from.

If I see her on the primary ballot in ‘12 however, I don’t think I’ll be voting her way unless nobody I want gets on the ballot. Hopefully it won’t be Mitt, I want him as governor of Michigan first.

I have never seen someone so pathetic that they cannot let even one Sarah Palin thread pass by without polluting it with multiple exclamation point nonsense every damned time. Do you not have a life outside of Sarah Palin threads on HotAir? Can’t you go and save some skunks on the side of the highway or something for crying out loud? I mean really, doesn’t some armadillo in the ditch somewhere need you to come to the rescue to give your shitty life some meaning? Isn’t there a rat in a trap that you could be helping? We don’t need your stupid crap here in these discussions. You contribute nothing worth anyone’s time. Go away and never come back. You suck and it’s never going to get better for you. You are hopeless and pathetic. I hope all of your pets become someone’s barbecue treats. Jim Treacher will eat all of the animals you love in front of you, and I will laugh at your misery. Your tears will sweeten my coffee in the morning, and your pathetic cries will entertain my relatives when they come to visit. They will be amused by your pointless whining every damned day about someone who is far more relevant than you will ever be to anyone you piece of shi’ite.

I’m sure this comment is far more attention that you will ever receive from a significant other in your worthless excuse of a love life, if that can even be legitimately used to describe your worthless waste of oxygen on our planet. Whatever your carbon footprint is, it ain’t worth it. Do us all a favor and disappear from the earth. I will be sure to eat some poor cute creature for dinner in your name Shelby, and it’s suffering will be a tribute to your worthless life. Go get bent, God Bless America, and Sarah Palin is awesome.

Umm, excuse me coldwarrior, but it’s not just conservatives who support Sarah Palin. She’s got the support of libertarians, as well. As a matter of fact, we libertarian Republicans were Palin supporters long before you all Johnny-Come-Lately Conservatives came on board.

The Draft Sarah Palin for VP effort was started by libertarian Republicans including myself, Adam Brickley of Colorado, and Steve Maloney of Pennsylvania. We started it way back in early 2007.

While we most certainly appreciate the support for Gov. Palin from our conservative friends, please get y’all’s facts straight in the future. Sarah Palin is a LIBERTARIAN REPUBLICAN! Just getting tired Jamson, of all these Johny-come-latelys to the Palin movement. And worse, all these Lefties trying to portray her as some social conservative.

I was there in Anchorage when she won her election in 2006. I stood on a very busy street corner with her, her mother, and 40 other Palin-ites, waving signs in 12 degree weather for 3 hours, 3 days before the election.

I remember her being slammed by Frank Murkowski-ites and some Conservatives even, for being a “closet Libertarian,” cause she had attended a few Libertarian Party meetings, and once talked favorable of marijuana legalization.

And now she gets it from both sides? Some conservatives here saying she’s not the “real thing,” and “not like Reagan.” And some Liberals saying she’s some sort of Religious Right Conservative?

My gosh, this is a woman who as Mayor of Wasilla, fought the Religious Right in her town, who tried to close down the bars, and force all the Tavern owners, to move their establishments outside of city limits. Does she get any credit for that from the so-called “civil liberties” Left?

Don’t get me wrong. It’s great that you Conservatives are now supporting Palin, at least the majority of you. But you all need to recognize, she’s much more libertarian than conservative. Hell, every Alaskan is. It’s in their blood.

As someone who isn’t a huge fan of a Palin run in 2012, I’m thrilled that she’s taken the Huckster out of the equation. She has her big streaks of liberalism on some major issues (as does Huck) that I’m not comfortable with and I’d much prefer Jindal or Romney to her. That said, she’s so much better than Huck simply because she’s honest about it and the “push my religious beliefs on you and make the campaign about religion, religion, religion” attitude that Huck carries everywhere isn’t there. I could stick a Palin/Somebody Else (hopefully a Jindal or other strong conservative) ‘12 sticker on my car. I’d need some real persuading to stick a Huck/Generic VP ‘12 sticker on my car. A lot of persuading.

Sarah is hated by the same kind of elites and in the same way that Americans have been from the beginning of our nation. The British thought we were unsophisticated,, Elites from the east thought the west was unsophisticated,, it was written that the further east you went,, the further you were from the dangers of the Indians the more sympathy one could find for the Indians while appreciating less the life of the cowboy or the dangers the settlers faced.
The Mexican Centrists in the 1828 takeover of their government hated the Texans,, the sophisticated elites from Spain considered them wild and backward peasants,, a dangerous example to the rest of Mexico,, a dangerous example of freedom that deeded to be disarmed and assimilated,,,
Abraham Lincoln was not just looked down upon by sophisticated elites,, they were embarrassed by him,,
look that is our history,,, In Europe the peasants were uneducated and knew their place while the high minded women of Europe sat in parlors sipping tea and fighting off the vapors,,, American women were beside their men building the west as equals,, beautiful and rugged,,, the real untold story of the west is the greatness of the American women,, that is the history of America and Americans have been just fine with Europeans and the rest of the world looking down on us as unsophisticated and backwards while we built a nation,, ordinary unsophisticated Americans built a nation with little more that a Bible, a gun and determination,,, so Sarah Palin is in good company!

Our problems have come when too many Americans suddenly care about what the sophisticated elites of the world think.

JellyToast on November 29, 2008 at 10:26 AM

The truth is that attacks against Palin will only rally her supporters to defend her and close ranks, 2012 be damned. I’m one of them.

She is the only politician I’ve encountered in my life who actually could get me dynamiting a cafe with one wink.

It is that kind of loyalty and devotion, and it is scary.

When I see her get attacked, it is as if all American motherhood/womanhood is getting attacked and it pisses me off fierce. I’d get in a fistfight publicly if I hear just one insulting word against her.

When I see her with Trig, defending him against the media, I see a devoted mommabear defending her young in the best American tradition.

How can an adult male not be moved to support their symbolic mom?

It’s a strong devotion like Obama supporters, but without the illusion that she will bring “peace on earth” and all the other lame O-man promises.

LMAO! Reagan had a Degree in Economics not journalism, was a Captain in the Army and was Governor of the largest state in the country for 8 years! Palin’s joke Resume doesn’t come close.

Poptech on November 29, 2008 at 2:04 AM

the funniest thing about you pop, is that you make these claims as if people here don’t know what you are talking about … unbelievable

Reagan was a C student in Economics, his claim to fame during and out of college was broadcasting sports games (which was what Palin wanted to do after college) and while he was in the military … his contribution was making training films

If you compared Reagan with Palin at age 44 you would have this:

Reagan was Governor at 56
Palin is a Governor at 44

Reagan spent his “early years” as a B movie actor, who is FAMOUS NOW because he became President later

Palin was a sports broadcaster

Palin was the Republican VP candidate

good grief you are dense

joey24007 on November 29, 2008 at 10:28 AM

If anybody could transform the GOP’s concept of the 3-legged stool (national security conservatism, fiscal conservatish, and social conservatism) into a 4-legged stool with libertarian conservatism added and then the people themselves could decide to fully commit themselves to one conservative candidate and thus deny moderates the nomination, then the forces of conservatism could be mobilized early enough in the process (fund raising, GOTV,targeting the message, the use of the internet, text messaging, networking, etc) to bridge the gap that Obama currently enjoys. What I have just outlined is the danger that SP presents to the Democrats and the MSM-that conservatism has a new champion and will be united under one banner and will not be henceforth spread in 4 different directions.

technopeasant on November 29, 2008 at 10:31 AM

One of the greatest and longstanding political myths perpetrated by the media, the Democrats, and left-wing interest groups is that many social conservatives (focus on evangelicals) want to turn America into a theocracy and tell non-Christians, atheists, gays etc how to live their lives. Sure 1% of evangelicals may think this way, but the vast majority of them if polled, just want government to leave them alone to pursue their own happiness, to maintain the Constitution as envisioned by the Founding Fathers and and uphold the traditional values that made America an ‘exceptional’ nation. Many Evangelicals are closer to the libertarian philosophy than many think. If only we could get beyond the myth, we might discover that.

technopeasant on November 29, 2008 at 10:41 AM

Her effort originally to draft her for VP, and her effort now to draft her for President in 2012, is dominated by LIBERTARIAN REPUBLICANS!

Thank you,

Eric Dondero, Publisher
Libertarian Republican blog

ericdondero on November 29, 2008 at 9:02 AM

Hey Eric,

I was one of those blogging as early as Feb. on Adam’s site, also hoping McCain would pick her because any other pick would have lead to zero turnout.

I knew that Sarah was more of a Libertarian, BUT I knew ASAP that her Trig (by April) and her personal life would hit it big time with socons, and we were right.

She attracts both libertarians and conservatives similar to Reagan, and she can be the frontrunner in 2012 or 2016 if she decides to make the run. Dick Morris is salivating now to get her contract, along with all the media types who want her for books, movies, interviews, etc.

I really think a book with her vision on each of the issues, one per chapter, would be a very good way to add weight to her resume and help American learn who the TRUE Sarah is.

Bobby Jindal on the Tonight Show.

Here is Sarah Palin at the convention.

chunderroad on November 29, 2008 at 4:19 AM

Boy, the GOP is doing great. These two would be a dynamite ticket. Heck, I could see them doing pretty good in 2012 or 2016 if they can continue doing great jobs as governors and keeping that outsider image.

We are headed for a vicious recession and stagflation over the next four years.

Sapwolf on November 29, 2008 at 10:53 AM

John McCain proved to be a double-edged sword. That he responded favorably to the ‘Draft Sarah Palin for VP’ web site was fantastic and seminal, but his commitment to the 3 or 4 legged stool was dubious at best. Thus taking a long-term point of view one has to look at Sarah Palin’s ascendency as a two-step process: 1)her introduction to the battlefield of national politics and 2)further seasoning and then a coalescence around her of every aspect of conservatism well before 2012. The first step has been achieved. We are fast on our way to achieving the second step. Give our movement another 2 years SP will be ready and just as important the troops will be ready to take on Obama and his merry men and women and the MSM.

technopeasant on November 29, 2008 at 10:55 AM

Sapwolf on November 29, 2008 at 10:53 AM

I would need convincing to get behind that ticket. Sarah Palin seems the best choice for 2012. The objective here is to block the Dems by picking up seats in 2010 and avoid at all cost the dreaded second Obama term.

chunderroad on November 29, 2008 at 11:02 AM

Jindal was offered the VP slot this year, and he chose to be the Governor of LA and stay away from McCain. His supporters should bear that in mind when they climb aboard Palin threads.

chunderroad on November 29, 2008 at 11:04 AM

Sapwolf on November 29, 2008 at 10:26 AM

PRECISELY SAPWOLF, PRECISELY!

The attacks on Sarah, especially those that come from within our own Republican Party, only serve to embolden us Sarah Supporters.

In my entire 46 years, I’ve never felt this passionate about supporting a politician. Sarah Palin is BETTER than Ronald Reagan. Barry Goldwater is a close second to Sarah, but even there, she still outshines him too.

You Sarah-critics want a fight for 2012? You’ve got one. You think the Ron Paul fanatics were bad? We’ll outdo them to win the nomination for Sarah 100 times over.

We’ll fight for her on every Republican and conservative and libertarian website on the internet. We’ll fight for her at every local GOP meeting. We’ll fight for her at ever GOP State Convention. We’ll walk precincts, knock on doors, lick envelopes, do what ever it takes to elect her President in 2012.

You all can either join us, or work against us. I seriously hope you choose the former.

ericdondero on November 29, 2008 at 11:09 AM

Timing is everything. If true, I will not disparage Jindal for refusing McCain’s offer. He is not my favorite for 2012 as long as SP remains viable and does not close the door to running in 2012. SP is a once-in-a-generation politican. But disparaging Jindal to boost SP is not the way to go. Both are capable candidates. May the best person prevail during the 2011-2012 primary season.

thomasaur on November 29, 2008 at 9:21 AM

Yes, there’s such a thing as a “Leftwing Libertarian.” Believe me, we Rightwing Libertarians have to deal with these morons every single day. They infest our movement with their DailyKossian foreign policy garbage. Though, they are pretty decent on economic issues and drug legalization, at least.

I’ve got an extreme example of a Leftwing Libertarian up on my site right now, some guy named Darien Wood who promises to “destroy” Rightwing Libertarians like me.

Yes, thank you again Sapwolf. You’ve got it precisely right. She’s a libertarian Republican who has enormous appeal to social conservatives. That’s why she’s the absolute best hope for the future of the Republican Party, and the GOP would be absolutely insane not to nominate her for 2012. Insane!

technopeasant on November 29, 2008 at 10:31 AM

Technopeasant, you’re absolutely BRILLANT! This is PRECISELY why the Left hates her so much. They know she’s a libertarian. You don’t think all that opposition reseach they did back in Sept./Oct. they didn’t stumble upon the fact that she was a regular at Libertarian Party meetings in Anchorage all those years?

They sure as hell brought up the Alaska Independence Party stuff on her. But she hadn’t been aligned with them for over a decade. The Libertarian Party association for Sarah was 2005/06. And not a peep out of the liberal media about it.

Why?

I’ll give you all a few seconds to ponder that one…

Tapping my finger… Still tapping…

Yes! You got it! The liberal media knows that libertrarianism is much more attractive to the overall electorate than social conservatism. So, they played up the religious aspects of Palin, and ALMOST COMPLETELY igorned her libertarian affiliations.

You all really wanna throw the liberal media for a curve ball for 2012?

Stop calling Palin a “religious conservative.” Label her a “libertarian Republican,” and they’ll be completely thwarted. They won’t know what hit them.

That was the mistake of the McCain Campaign. They downplayed her libertarian side. And played up her Pro-Lifeness, Christian Conservatism.

And thus we lost.

ericdondero on November 29, 2008 at 11:20 AM

Yes, i agree completely. As the saying goes, you only have one chance to make a good first impression. When the McCain rolled SP out they should have emphasized her libertarian credentials to blunt the effect of Barr and to stress that SP believed in spreading liberty rather than curtailing it and implementing a theocracy. The problem with GOP professional advisors and handlers is they often direct their efforts to the lowest common denominator-the so-called evangelical base-without understanding the base is more nuanced than is reported by the MSM, pundits, or elitist country club Republicans.

technopeasant on November 29, 2008 at 11:30 AM

ericdondero on November 29, 2008 at 11:20 AM

among many mistakes

also include:

Never clearly defining her record
Allowing the media to pummel her with nonsense, while they kept her in a bubble

and worst of all … the way they conducted interviews

How do you not let Palin do more conservative talk shows?

joey24007 on November 29, 2008 at 11:37 AM

As I stated at the beginning of this blog, none of us must discount for a second the power of the MSM to shape how average people perceive SP and that ‘a truth squad’ must be developed to instantly debunk any new myth spread about SP as we get closer to 2012. For example ‘I can see Russia from my house’ (Tina Fey on SNL) has now become part of the popular American culture that if a poll were taken of any thousand people (including Republicans) at least 2/3 would think that SP made that statement.

technopeasant on November 29, 2008 at 11:40 AM

The MSM has given her that label not her supporters.

thomasaur on November 29, 2008 at 11:30 AM

Sure, but you all conservatives just went along with it. You fell right into their trap.

I remember the very first day she was nominated. For 1 day, maybe 2, the media dubbed her a “libertarian.” In fact, I was up in New England at the time, and I was listening to Howie Carr, on the radio. And one of the very first reports that came out on Sarah Palin, read over the air by Howie was how the Marijuana Policy Foundation loved Sarah Palin for her pro-legalization views.

Then, within two days the story quickly changed. The entire liberal media switched from “Sarah the rugged individualist Alaska libertarian,” to “Sarah, the social conservative.”

What happened?

Very cleverly the liberal media realized that libertarianism was too attractive for the overall electorate. So, they drummed up some business about her Pentecostal church in Wasilla, and quickly changed the meme to “Sarah Palin is a whack Religious Rightist.”

We libertarian Republicans were aghast!

I fully expected the McCain Campaign, and the RNC to shoot back that, “that’s absurd, she’s a libertrarian… she was even dubbed a libertarian by the Alaska media… she was even criticized for being too much of a libertarian in Alaska politics… she even got the friggin’ endorsment of the Libertarian Party of Alaska…”

Nothing. Neither the McCain Campaign, nor the RNC did anything to change the media perception of her, back from Religious Right to libertarian Republican.

Dissaster. Utter dissaster.

But we don’t have to make that mistake for 2012.

Screw the liberal media. Let US change the meme back to Sarah Palin, Alaska Libertarian Republican, and damned proud of it!

ericdondero on November 29, 2008 at 11:44 AM

technopeasant on November 29, 2008 at 11:40 AM

Yeah, a commenter at Althouse termed this sort of misquotation “malapropaganda” – a good term. We need to counter that perception aggressively by putting her original (unedited by ABC) response out there.

Another example of a similar misquotation would be Saint Gore’s “I invented the Internet” statement – though I’m in no rush to discredit that one.

Jim62sch on November 29, 2008 at 11:45 AM

joey24007: to say that McCain’s hatred of Rush Limbaugh cost the GOP the election may be an overstatement (due to the financial meltdown)but SP’s appearance on right-wing radio early in the campaign could have energized the base even more. Post-election surveys did show that Obama did receive the votes of 20% of conservatives and many pollsters reported that the base vote was down in percentage terms over 2004. Perhaps SP could have used right-wing radio to emphasize her libertarian credentials. By the way, it was reported that SP had to sneak away from her handlers to phone Rush Limbaugh-an example of her going rogue.

technopeasant on November 29, 2008 at 12:19 PM

Stick with the Governor’s gig, and push for a bigger leadership role in the Governor’s associations and conferences. Senator is a loser because you have to vote on every piece of crap bill that comes down the pike and give endless ammunition to your critics. If she voted “aye” on a bill that was 99.9% good but contained one paragraph of pork, the only thing you would hear about 24/7 would be “Palin supports pork”.

In the Governor’s job she controls the agenda and the message – and she’s the most famous member of a club of only 50 people. In the Senate she would be the junior member of a minority party in a group of 100.

Jim62sch on November 29, 2008 at 12:27 PM

Jim62sch on November 29, 2008 at 12:32 PM

ericdondero:here’s a counter-argument. How does Sarah answer the question of whether she will serve her full term if she is re-elected in 2010? This theme will be hammered by the Democrats-that she will desert Alaska for the lower 48 once she is re-elected. And if Sarah loses her bid for re-election, then her credibility may suffer as well. Eric, I’m not saying you’re wrong, but that every decision has ramifications.

We would need to look at how George W. and Bill Clinton handled the same situation. (I don’t remember off the top of my head, though I seem to remember that Clinton basically got a pass.)

There are actually other lessons to be learned from Clinton 1992 – for example, I remember the theme being pushed that since Arkansas was a small state, Clinton wasn’t really prepared for the Presidency. (I think Perot pushed it more than Bush – Bush the Elder was too much of a “gentleman” to actually try to win.)
