Twin Cities man committed suicide bombing in Somalia

posted at 8:47 am on November 26, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

The FBI believes that a recent Somali immigrant to Minneapolis returned to his homeland to carry out a terrorist suicide bombing in Northern Somalia.  That’s not the extent of their concern, either.  A number of Shirwa Ahmed’s associates in the Twin Cities have suddenly disappeared, creating worries that Ahmed may have run a terrorist cell in the Minneapolis area (via Jihad Watch):

5 EYEWITNESS NEWS has learned that federal law enforcement sources believe that a Twin Cities man blew himself up in a suicide bombing in Northern Somalia last month.

The FBI and Homeland Security are investigating whether Shirwa Ahmed had developed a terrorist recruiting network in the area.

5 EYEWITNESS NEWS learned that Ahmed came to the Twin Cities in 1996 and graduated from Roosevelt High School in Minneapolis. He was a naturalized U.S. citizen.

More than a dozen young men of Somali descent, mostly in their 20s, from the Minneapolis area have recently disappeared, U.S. law enforcement officials tell 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS. All are thought to be associates of Ahmed. U.S. officials suspect most of the young men have departed for Somalia to fight in ongoing violence there or to train in terrorist camps. Family members of the young men are said to be distraught, trying to figure to out what happened to them, sources say.

No one knows whether the men have returned to Somalia for other attacks, or whether they have begun organizing for attacks here in the US.  They simply can’t be found anywhere, and until they are, law enforcement and intelligence agents won’t know what Ahmed had in mind for his associates.  ABC says that “senior officials” in counterterrorism efforts remain concerned and are monitoring the situation.

The Twin Cities has a large Somali immigrant community, the largest in the country, I believe.  It’s getting more politically active, with some of its members insisting on significant changes in facilities and accommodations in airports, schools, taxis and transportation, retail, and factory employment.  This will create even more suspicion over the intent of the Somali activists.

That may be unfair to the vast majority of law-abiding Somali immigrants, but it does call into question the wisdom of allowing any more Somalis to enter the US while it serves as a terrorist training ground.  CIA director Michael Hayden has warned recently about al-Qaeda efforts to rebuild itself in the Horn of Africa region, including Somalia, and their apparent success in combining with local groups to bolster their funding and training.  Did Ahmed’s associates go to join them?  Or did they come here to learn how to disappear into the US?

Or did they come here to learn how to disappear into the US?

Having been among Somali men at MCTC during my college days, I wouldn’t be surprised if this was the case. I found the majority of them to be very unwilling to assimilate, and treated women like dirt. They were angry and suspicious of anyone not Muslim, and were the first ones to make a lot of noise if the college didn’t bend to their wishes for separate facilities for Muslims/Non-Muslims. MCTC built an area for them to pray in, but there was no such facility built for Chrisitans, Jews, Buddhists, etc.

The women, on the other hand, wanted to improve themselves and earn their part of the American Dream. They were generally very approachable and friendly, especially the younger women.

Yeah, I’m not very happy to see this happen, but surprised? No.

We need some serious ‘reform’ to our immigration system, and not the kind Obama and McCain have in mind. I know it sounds cold to blacklist immigrants from certain countries, but as our current pace we’re maybe 50 years behind having the same kinds of problems Europe is right now.

i’m not sure i find comfort in knowing that flying back to Somalia to blow himself up is quite a bit more involved & expensive than doing it here.

I’m wondering who or what that man blew up, besides himself. Is there anything left worth attacking in Somalia?

Spare me the obligatory PC statement. Ed. Yeah, yeah, yeah there are law-abiding Somalis, of course, so why do you have to say it? Can we get past making statements based in reality without always catering to the PC-police by throwing in the obligatory of course, not ALL fill-in-the-blank are bad people.
Somalis may be law-abiding but they have no interest in assimilating so why exactly are they coming to the US? Just ask non-Muslim workers at this Colorado meat packing plant http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,421471,00.html

Maybe they went home to become pirates. I hope they realize their mistake and don’t do anything violent, if not then I hope the Navy blows ‘em outta the water before they hurt anybody else.

If they’re still here, I hope they convert to Christ and change their ways, if not than I hope the FBI catches them before they can do any harm to innocent people.

You will find a direct correlation between the number of Somali/Yemeni/Pakistani immigrants living in said area and the cesspool factor of said area.

Oh wait, let me throw in the obligatory not all Somalis, Yemenis and Pakistanis contribute to the cesspool factor, in fact, many are law-abiding highly educated contributing members of society.

Further proof of my previous comments.

Islam is not a religion. It is a totalitarian political movement that infects its host under the guise of religious toleration while offering none itself. Medically speaking it is a malignant cancer cell that first appears as a benign parasite.

In Star Trek terms they are the Borg. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borg(Star_Trek)

“The Borg have become a symbol in popular culture for any juggernaut against whom “resistance is futile.” The Borg are depicted as an amalgam of cybernetically enhanced humanoid drones of multiple species, organized as an inter-connected collective with a hive mind, inhabiting a vast region of space with many planets and ships. They operate towards one single-minded purpose: to add the biological and technological distinctiveness of other species to their own, in pursuit of perfection. This is achieved through forced assimilation, a process which transforms individuals and technology into Borg, enhancing individuals by adding synthetic components.

The Twin Cities has a large Somali immigrant community … insisting on significant changes in facilities and accommodations in airports …

SWA will soon begin service to Minn/St.P. and it’ll be a cold day hell before I let anybody insist on ‘special accommodations’ on my plane if they’re gonna disrupt the other passangers.

A F/A that I used to date said a muslim guy on her plane demanded to know if she was ‘clean’ … in other words, was she on her period, and that if so, she couldn’t serve him. She refused to answer, so he insisted that a male F/A serve him. There were no males on that crew, so she told him ‘Well I guess you don’t get a drink then, huh?’

Coming soon to a city near you. I copied this from a Commentor at Lucianne:

1990. I watched in helpless horror as a Saudi muslim man beat the living hell out of his wife…in public, and in front of his children. Her crime? Her crime was this: she glanced over at me and the several Marines with me. This happened in a Safeway store…yes, even saudi arabia. We were shopping on-the-sly for anything other than MREs, when a fully shrouded saudi woman glanced over her shoulder at us. Her husband saw her,and immediately back-handed her so hard that she fell onto her children and knocked over rows of canned goods. As she was foundering on the ground, her veil pulled away from her face. The husband went into a purple rage and started kicking her and beating her with closed fists. As an American, I was stunned beyond reason and filled with a shaking, violent indignation. As an instinctual action, I unlatched my pistol holster, and was in the act of drawing it out when the other Marines grabbed my arm and ushered me out of the store. As we moved away, I glanced back to ensure that he would see what was in my eyes.
As I did so, I saw the unforgettable look in his wife’s eyes. Heavy with tears, her eyes held the resignation of a life spent as a punching-bag. As I turned my head back, a man and his wife were standing at the end of the row. He was standing with arms crossed, and a smug expression on his face. She bore the same helpless and hollow look of a beaten dog.

Kafir

I am not speaking for myself but collectively we do not have it, Europe being the prime example. We continue, despite a war, to think that Islam is a religion of peace rather than a death cult. The average citizen here and abroad, for any number of reasons, is fearful of exciting Muslims. Terrorism has been very successful. While we rail against the obvious–9/11–we shy away from its real damage, allowing Islam to spread via mosques all through out western culture under the false conviction that they will become like us and respect the separation of church and state. Islam by its very nature cannot respect this separation. It continually seeks to undermine us because Islam is the state.

So while I appreciate your sentiments about resistance, its bunting at best.

As for the missing other members of the cell, we need to track them down and help them assume room temperature which is really hard in the twin cities this time of year.

Obviously, Minnesota’s public institutions have been insufficiently sensitive to the needs of Muslims.

SWLiP on November 26, 2008 at 10:37 AM

The Twin Cities are a hotbed of creeping sharia. The local Powers That Be are to too enmeshed in Political Correctness to look seriously at how radical Islam is becoming entrenched, particularly in the Somali community.

Powerline blog and Strib columnist Katherine Kersten have tried to ring the alarm bell, but the rest of the media has peacefully slumbered until now.

Perhaps his will be a wake up call for our local political leaders. That day will come, but probably not until terrorists machine gun the elves at the HolliDazzel parade or blow themselves up at the Mall of America.

Meanwhile, Mpls. mayor RT Rybek continues to display what a weenie he is by zipping about in a Itsy Bitsy Electric Car.

Maybe Minnesota is not reaching out enough to the Somalis. Perhaps the colleges could create majors in Sharia Cab Driving and Terror Studies. Teach the women a trade, like sewing suicide vests. Perhaps in addition to the prayer room, they could add a workroom where they could build IEDs safely. Anything less would be culturally insensitive and intolerant.

Soon, I will refuse to travel to Bismarck.
I already refuse to fly bcs our flights outta Bismarck always rout through some scary big city.

It can happen anytime & anywhere.

Limerick, give them time. They won’t be going “postal,” just jihad. As for fighting Islam, till the last breath, then I’ll find another one.

SilentWatcher on November 26, 2008 at 11:54 AM

The poor guy couldn’t find any oil tankers to pirate in Minnesota–he had to do the next best thing. Read Winston Churchill’s comments on how badly many Muslim men treat their wives–then read the Tony 737 post about Saudi Arabia in 1990–nothing has changed in 100 years.
***
Then watch internet videos from the “enlightened religion of peace” countries as they stone, hang, and whip helpless women who have been raped or strayed from their husbands–or wanted to have their own lives without a husband. Then look at the faces of the two young girls murdered by their dad in the Dallas “honor killings”–he is free as a bird somewhere.
***
We should be at war with this “society” in our own country–never let it happen here again. Stop admitting these losers to our country. The women should form a sisterhood of armed vigilantes in their countries to do PAYBACK on these criminals–the law never will–put the fear of death into the offenders.
