Peggy Noonan: The media wants to make Palin the face of the GOP

posted at 12:43 pm on November 26, 2008 by Allahpundit

It’s true, isn’t it? Palinmania’s always had a perverse “strange bedfellows” dynamic insofar as the base is convinced she’s the savior of conservatism while the left’s convinced she’s the ruin of it. Hence their mutual interest in raising her profile. (For a stark illustration of the point, hold your nose and watch the “Thank You” parody at HuffPo’s humor site.) It’s no mystery which camp Noonan’s in; what is a mystery is the extent to which each side’s simply reacting and overreacting to the other, goading each other into ratcheting up the praise and vilification in an endless backlash cycle. Douthat names that as a key omission from my post about the difference between Palin and Huck, in fact: While Huckabee’s always been chummy with the national media, notwithstanding the occasional Rolling Stone piece calling him a lunatic, she’s been derided since day one. Since there are few better gauges of conservative authenticity among the grassroots than press treatment — just ask Maverick — Huck will forever trail her in the great bona fides sweepstakes.

Long story short, the left’s laying a bet that she’ll be easy pickings down the line and the right’s laying a bet that she’s here to save the day. And the pot just keeps getting bigger and bigger. How lucky do you feel? Click the image to watch.

Are there examples of well funded Conservatives running and winning in NJ? In MD, there is only one Congressional District left with a Republican Representative. I am prone to think that more moderate Republicans have a better chance in the bluer districts, but since I think you are saying the opposite, I’m curious if there are examples of this happening. if there are, these victories would be potential blueprints for conservative Republicans to win races.

Red State State of Mind on November 26, 2008 at 10:58 PM

See in NJ we have some strong hold GOP counties … so we get some decent conservative members of the House of Representatives (Washington D.C.)

NJ is a very interesting state … we should be two states … North and South

The South is pretty conservative … Cape May, Ocean, and Atlantic Counties because it is rural ….

in statewide elections, senate and governor , the north dominates because of the population gap

I signed up to volunteer for Dick Zimmer who was running against Lautenberg … so the dude calls me and asks if I can help out on X day, he tells me where these rallies are taking place and I tell the guy that I live near the Delaware Bay and that was the end of that conversation

Red State State of Mind on November 26, 2008 at 10:58 PM

no, because the state GOP doesn’t try

However, I am hoping that John Crowley runs for governor … he is wealthy and his story is amazing

joey24007 on November 26, 2008 at 11:08 PM

Folks, this is not about wining elections. If getting elected means becoming blue and supporting soft leftism, then the elections are not worth winning. We’d do better to spend our energies in business and industry getting real work done.

This is about winning hearts. We have to start teaching, explaining, doing. Building communities, safe havens for people that still cherish liberty.

spmat on November 27, 2008 at 12:01 AM

Simply saying you’re conservative doesn’t mean anything if people don’t know (or have no reason to care) what conservatism is.

great point … and the problem we have now is that many people believe that Conservatism is George Bush, bailouts, and the Republican Congress of the last 8 years

Moderates have been running the GOP in the name of conservatism

Peggy Noonan – GAWD She’s UGLY – On SO MANY Levels!!

She just makes me go “YEEEEEECCCHHHH!!!!”

No matter what Noonan writes or says about anything it will always screech so saccharine across the board of life like a phony mental health clinician with a sweet fake voice. She is no conservative or Republican.

rlwo2008 on November 27, 2008 at 12:55 AM

It is not just a left/right thing. It is more a class thing between those who consider themselves “purebred” and superior to others vs. the “mogrels” who populate non urban America. The elites, for example, consider the other side’s elites to be superior to their own sides mongrels and prefer to interact with them, dine and party with them and go to the same meetings and conventions to “debate” each other. Sarah Palin threatens this whole class (of which Peggy Nooan is a charter member) by representing the great majority of citizens who are fed up with the Washington/NY/LA elite, which acts like a self-pepetuaing Board of Directors ruling class.

Bert66 on November 27, 2008 at 1:06 AM

I hope the left makes Palin the face of the GOP and I hope Noonan had to read about it every day for the next four years.

I hope every religious nut conservative like me goes gaga over Palin and weeps when her motorcade drives by. I hope it is hopeless to get any right wing nut hick conservative to vote for anyone but Palin. I hope the Palin hairstyle and glasses are worn by every conservative female in America and I hope that Palin tells everyone she reads Noonan religiously

Noonan deserves no less. Meanwhile, I wish the left would keep acting like Noonan is a conservative columnist.

entagor on November 27, 2008 at 1:16 AM

I see the same meme is being repeated over and over again. Listen, guys. If you really think the GOP lost this election because McCain was a so-called “RINO” or because the message wasn’t conservative enough, you are certifiably 100% insane. Take it from there and you will understand.

It’s not that some people, be it Peggy Noonan or Allahpundit, don’t “get” Palin. You sound like lefties when you talk like that. It’s just that they are entitled to an opinion, a judgment on politics as they see it, and they express it. OK? It’s not treason, it doesn’t make them leftists or Democrats or anything like that. Stop the crap, because otherwise we’re heading for a really craterous dive in 2012.

Baphomet on November 26, 2008 at 1:46 PM

Well said and so true! The Palin-adorers continue to walk blindly through the wilderness, and unless they get a clue it’s going to be a cakewalk for Obama in 2012.

anybody with two brain cells would know that Palin was was not married at the time of her first child

you don’t need medical records for that …

joey24007 on November 26, 2008 at 2:24 PM

So why then is Sarah hiding her medical records if everyone already knows she had her first kid out of wedlock? What is she hiding?! Releasing her records would prove that Trig is her baby, SO WHY NOT RELEASE THEM ALREADY?

She’s hiding something else, that’s why!

Shelby on November 27, 2008 at 3:36 AM

Noonan, Will, Brooks, Frum et al spoke up in Sept/Oct about their dislike for McCain, Palin, the McCain/Palin ticket. Were they being ‘smart’ in doing so, in essence kneecapping the Republican ticket just weeks before the election? Were they doing so for a long held principle that they had previously expoused? Were they doing so for monetary gain? Were they doing so for more media attention?

The time to discuss the candidates is during the primaries. Once the primaries are over, one either supports the ticket or not. Most of the time, one doesn’t jump to the other team while the game is being played. The above listed, did. Noonan, Will, et al are all wordsmiths. They know how to say nothing and make it sound wonderful. They know how to offer up statements without outwardly diminishing someone. Each of them CHOSE to offer up statements and articles that were detrimental to the Republican ticket. Makes it kinda hard to trust them in the future.

57 states visited by Obama…
Katherines “closed for 15 years” Cafe that Biden just ate at the week before…
Obama lies about support of the Born Alive Infancy Protection Act…
Biden saying to Couric (unchallenged) that Roosevelt went on TV in 1929 “as president” calming the American People about the depression that just happened…

I could go on but you’re a troll/moby and you just don’t matter.

Hey, how about an all caps message about her hunting wolves from the air?

hawkdriver on November 26, 2008 at 3:07 PM

I did not vote for Obama or Palin/McCain. I believe all of them were lousy candidates.

What’da you mean about an “all caps” message? I NEVER do all caps’ posts because they are hard to read.

But okay, you asked for an aerial wolf hunting post, so here it is!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQobIUE1zTU

That ad, according to MediaCurves.com — a web site that provides a venue to view Americans’ perceptions of popular and controversial advertisements — earned a high score due to its effectiveness in swaying voters to the other side.

The ad received a Political Communications Impact Score (PCIS) of 23.3.

http://www.mediacurves.com/PCIS/

Only one ad—John McCain’s “Pump“—received a higher score (24.7) for effectiveness! No other election ad scores even reached into the 20’s! Obviously, Sarah’s support of this barbaric practice will ALWAYS be a problem for her with most everyone outside of her base.

Why does Sarah hate animals so much, anyway?! The only animals ever associated with Sarah are bloody ones! The aerial hunting, bloody dead moose pics, the dead bear in her Gov. office, and turkey slaughtering! Not once have I seen a photo or interview of Sarah with a family pet! NOT ONCE! Of course, she’s busy now with 5 kids, but what about the past?!

To those of you who say “we like her cause she’s like us”, well she’s not! Most American voters are animal lovers and Sarah’s image regarding animals is BAD to say the least!

Shelby on November 27, 2008 at 5:23 AM

I don’t know that Palin could ever be Reagan, but I am old enough to remember Reagan coming to prominence in national American politics. There are some similarities. One thing about Reagan however, since he was an actor, he had a great sense of theater. He could offset some of the negative. I am not sure Palin can do that. But you know what? We will find out.

Terrye on November 27, 2008 at 6:04 AM

Shelby:

I don’t think it is about hating animals, Palin lives in a part of the country where hunting is a tradition. I used to have a dairy farm and I have seen what coyotes can do to a new born calf. Trust me, nothing man does to animals is as cruel as what they do to each other.

Terrye on November 27, 2008 at 6:05 AM

Who is hiring her? She is obviously batting for likely 2012 nominee.

promachus on November 27, 2008 at 7:49 AM

It appears that it is the self-important Peggy Noonan who finds Sarah Palin a bit tacky. This has-been is out of touch with Republicans. Republicans want leaders who mirror their core values returned to the Party, in spite of what “the media” may or may not think.

We want God, honor, morality, standards, principles and traditional values put first by our leaders. And we want all Americans and those who visit our great country to obey our laws.

We want illegal aliens packed up and deported, we want sex education and homosexual organizations like Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network (GLSEN) and Planned Parenthood (PP) thrown out of our public schools and we want to worship God freely, as guaranteed, by the First Amendment of the United States Constitution without the fear of intimidation.

We want parents to approve of “all” programs taught to their children, through the voting process, and we want tenure for all educators abolished, etc.

We want teachers who attempt to indoctrinate our children politically and/or sexually fired immediately.
Shuddup Noonan!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE!

Go to TEAMSARAH.ORG and see women and men waking up to the fact that Sarah is being pounded. Saudi Arabia hates her, because she is telling them to their faces, Take Your Oil and Shove It. The Left hates her because she is like krptonite on their commie ideas of America’s future. The Right hates her because they are really left, and they don’t want to stand up for anything, and then there is that ego thing. But Team Sarah is up to 50,000 people. Go there and school them, they are hungry to get Sarah elected in 12.

The shortage is in GUTS, LEADERSHIP, GRACE.

Hey college aged, basement dwelling, left tennis elbow troll, she released this already.

Obama still has not.

And IF Palin was pregnant before she married Todd, so be it. They were in love.

By the way, Mary, THE Mary was pregnant too before she was married to Joseph. No it’s not good to do that but it happens. My grandpa knocked up my grandma. Big deal.

My little brother tells me that approximately half of all first children conceived in Mexico are out of wedlock.

Big deal. Nobody’s perfect. It’s not the sinning alone that makes practicing Christians different, but how we respond to our weakness/vice that makes the Christian. Man is perfectable according to the liberal, but we conservatives know man is not perfectable, hence enormous respect for the Constitution by socons just like libertarians. We go together despite what people on the left plus Noonan and her gang tell you.

Sorry, but that’s another misconception. Sarah Palin has killed and cooked caribou. She said she’s never killed a moose.

As for the recipe, just substitute caribou (or moose, for that matter) in your favorite recipe. Just don’t tell the kids the other name for caribou (reindeer).

If Shelby wanders off the moonbat reservation, the her collar will zap her. She tried making somewhat coherent arguments a few pages back, but then she got shut down.

And all of the “token” conservatives who’ve been given the MSM’s official stamp of approval – like Will, Noonan, Safire, etc… have never been anything but a bunch of lapdogs.

That said, I don’t think he/she is conservative on multi-levels. More like a Berlitz conservative (two week crash course) who knows a few key phrases.

Terrye on November 27, 2008 at 6:05 AM

Terrye,

Sadly, that is not always true. I saw on the news not long ago that some teens had set a cat on fire! And HotAir recently had this link describing sick vick’s brutality not only to his pitbulls, but to family pets as well which he put in with the pitbulls, laughing while they were mauled and killed!!! SICK! Animals suffer extreme abuse at the hands of humans, and when children/teens torture animals everyone should be concerned. This is how serial killers start out!

And I still know not why Sarah Palin hates animals so much.

More Michael Vick Barbarism Bared
USDA report details how football star killed pit bulls, lied to FBI

“NOVEMBER 24–In the most disturbing account yet of Michael Vick’s dogfighting operation, a federal investigative report details how the disgraced athlete killed pit bulls by hanging them from a nylon cord nailed to a tree and drowned others in a five gallon bucket of water. Quoting confidential witnesses and several of Vick’s cronies (all of whom, like the former NFL star, pleaded guilty to federal criminal charges), a United States Department of Agriculture report portrays Vick as a heartless enthusiast of barbaric pit bull fights. Excerpts of the USDA report, which was prepared by the agency’s inspector general, can be found on the following pages. Along with killing underperforming pit bulls, a government informant told investigators that Vick twice placed family pets into the ring with pit bulls because he and his cohorts “thought it was funny to watch the pit bulls…injure or kill the other dogs.”

Baphomet on November 26, 2008 at 1:46 PM

If Noonan is entitled to an opinion other people are also entitled to an opinion.

If you think their opinion is crap, that is your opinion

Camillea Paglia thinks Palin is brilliant. That is her opinion. Camille Paglia is brilliant in my opinion, although I disagree with her politics, and find her disabilty (a mind so fast she speaks in essays, not paragraphs, typically mixing several themes simultaneously in any debate like a mathematician solving multivariable equations) exhausting

That is my opinion.

McCain was not a ‘so-called RINO’

McCain is a RINO. He worked with the Democrats to lock out Senate conservatives to pass liberal bills, including campaign finance reform which kept a lot of people’s opinion out of this election

Noonan does not like Palin. Noonan is not brilliant. She does not like Palin’s politics but pretends her distaste is for Palin’s vulgaity and simple mindeness. Noonan ‘gets’ Obama and finds him brilliant. She is not certifiably crazy. She is not worth listening to either. I can take my Obama straight without guidance from Noonan.

RINOs have decided McCain did not win because he wasted time trying to get the conservative vote when he should have reached out for a different voting block. While McCain made a weak play for the conservative vote, he made no play to regain the conservative trust. This despite a track record of betraying conservatives as a Senator.

I think RINOs should let go of the Plain motif and be what they are. They can stop pretending to love the hicks who loved Palin

I know conservatives who refused to vote because of their hatred for McCain for issues the RINOs consider closed – like campaign finance reforem (McCCain himself said it was a non issue), POW-MIA, Amnesty and border control.

RINOs have to either declare a new party and new platform, or kick the conservatives out of the GOP by rewriting the GOP platform. George Bush could write the platform. He has the time.

RINOs are arrogant fools, because they call conservatives stupid for not accepting RINO ideas. It is up to RINOs to win people to their side. Voting is still voluntary in the US.

RINOs could scrap conservatives whom they despise for the mythical voting block of moderate hispanics, secularists, and non evangelical christians and a la carte catholics

That would put them somewhat above Ralph Nader and Bob Barr

Stop the crap, because otherwise we’re heading for a really craterous dive in 2012.

It is not wise to tell certifiably 100 percent insane people to cut the crap ot they will crash the next election.

And I still know not why Sarah Palin hates animals so much.
Shelby on November 28, 2008 at 1:25 AM

Good grief, do you ever stop and think about this? Are you dense? People in Alaska grow up hunting wild game so they can feed themselves and their kids through the brutal sub-arctic winters. They love the outdoors and the wildlife. Hunting caribou and moose keeps the herds from overpopulating and being miserable. This has to be done.

You seem to be apoplectic over some wolf control by the state. Have you seen what a pack of wolves do to their prey? Let me tell you, it’s far kinder to the prey animal to die quickly from a well placed rifle round than to be stalked, harassed, attacked, crippled, then torn to pieces one bite at a time by your precious wolves you moron!!!! There, maybe you will pay attention if I use multiple exclamation points like you do!!!!!

For all your moralist high horsing about exactly when Sarah got preggers, you don’t seem to acknowledge that most Christians believe nature is here to serve man, as in food!!!!!!! That is God’s will as written in the Bible, no?
If you don’t understand that, then your judgemental preenings about out of wedlock preggers doesn’t have much of a philosophical grounding in Christian theology. You just hate Sarah because she shot Bambi. Waaahhh!!!!!

Maybe you should read this: Helicopter wolf-kills help caribou calves

SURVEYS: Survival rate soars after shooters thin a herd’s predators.

Slaughtering wolves on the Alaska Peninsula appears to have had the desired effect — more caribou got a chance to live, according to biologists with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.

As ugly and as politically incorrect as the wolf killing might seem to some, they said, the helicopter gunning that took place earlier this year saved caribou, especially young caribou, from being eaten alive.

In this case, however, even some groups staunchly opposed to Alaska wolf-control efforts are conceding the removal of 28 wolves appears to have played a major role in caribou calf survival.

I think that certainly is good news,” said John Toppenberg of the Alaska Wildlife Alliance. “I am supportive of that goal. How they arrived at that I might have an issue with.”

The southern peninsula caribou has been in a free fall for several years.

This is called wildlife management. It worked, helping the overall population. Get a grip on yourself and wake up to the real world the rest of us live in.

And Happy Turkey Genocidal Mass Murder Day, you friggin’ psycho.

Brian1972 on November 28, 2008 at 2:33 AM

Anyone who lives on the outskirts of civilization (those new developments) has dealt with coyotes and wolves. God forbid one of your pets or children answers their siren call or has a brush with one in the wild.

Most Alaskans live in the rural areas which are few and far between. Much of the state’s budget goes to infrastructure to make their lives easier. Many rural dwelling Alaskans hunt and eat caribou, which were hunted to near extinction by the local wolf population.

It was a problem for ANWR. Oh, the protests about the poor caribou. Then when the herds dropped from 11,000 to 500 on account of the wolves, activists were upset wolves were shot from helicopters. But the herds are recovering and hopefully man will not have to intervene. It was urban sprawl which caused the problem to begin with.

You know, some moose chili would be real tasty right about now. Just a couple of weeks ago I went to a birthday party for a good friend of mine. His roomate-cousin had made a big pot of chili with deer meat, or venison instead of beef. That was some damn good chili. We don’t have moose or caribou in these parts, but the deer are all over the place. The state issues hunting licenses to allow for population control, and feeding of families. There is even a hunters charity that donates meat to the poor. They do a lot of good for conservation and environmental responsibility.

As for strange, secretive and air-headed behavior, your team has a lot of room to talk: seriously, Joe isn’t MIA for nothing, right? And, geez, Obama’s trying desperately to shore up his know-nothingness by packing the house with Clintonistas, which in itself is goofy, but Clinton III even has THE CLINTONS now! When/if Palin runs again, it will because Team Hopenchange left us hoping for some REAL change.

Shelby, every obsession is healthy to a certain extent. If you hate the Governor so much why don’t you just avoid these threads. Now, Palin’s doctor releases a letter that states that she is in good health and that’s all she needs to release, Just like when Obama released a silly note (http://tinyurl.com/4y9xrr) she did as well….

Get over her… Is Obama hiding something as well? Why doesn’t he release his medical records to the public. Why doesn’t he release his school records to the public?

Why doesn’t he provide the courts with a copy of his birth certificate so he can kill off all of these silly lawsuits against him…

Christine on November 28, 2008 at 4:07 PM

Let’s go over this again and try to use ALL OF YOUR BRAIN POWER THIS TIME, OKAY FOLKS!

I have said NOT A WORD about eating animals! I have commented on the barbaric practice of AERIAL HUNTING OF WOLVES AND BEARS FROM PLANES/HELICOPTERS! Palin supports this cruelty. The general public will NOT accept this type of cruelty and that is precisely why one of the most effective ads this election was the Palin aerial hunting ad, which was PLAYED IN BATTLEGROUND STATES.

Sarah gives Greta an interview with a dead bear as her office decor when she already has an iffy history of having any regard for animals! Brilliant Simple Sarah, just brilliant!

Palin did a happy-happy-oh-look-at-me interview IN FRONT OF ANIMALS BEING SLAUGHTERED!

In the video of Palin pardoning the turkey, she jabbed the guy next to her as she said the words “I, as a friend to animals small and large…“. So that was a joke, huh? Actually I believe it was. From what Palin has shown us, we have no reason to believe she has anything but disdain for animals. Once again, has anyone EVER SEEN A PHOTO OR INTERVIEW OF PALIN WITH A FAMILY PET? We’ve seen the photo of her with her little girl and the dead bloody moose! Couldn’t we just once see an animal-friendly photo of Palin! Probably not, because I don’t think she has got one. And I believe that is because she strongly dislikes God’s creatures!

One of the great ironies of Sarah Palin’s candidacy is that the moose-killing, aerial hunting supporter, Turkeygate VP nominee made her big debut with a speech written BY A CHRISTIAN ANIMAL WELFARE ADVOCATE! Matthew Scully wrote her speech AND THE BOOK Dominion: The Power of Man, the Suffering of Animals, and the Call to Mercy. Matt is a kind and merciful example of how one can be a Christian and ALSO CARE ABOUT GOD’S ANIMALS!

I see a very cold and calloused side to Sarah. I noticed this during her debate with Biden. When he got emotional talking about the car accident that killed his wife and almost killed a son, Simple Sarah simply looked ahead with her face down a bit and seemingly with a slight smirk on her face! Wow, heartless!!! O’Reilly’s body language expert even commented on her behavior regarding this! Talk about COLD!

Simple Sarah may be hot as you guys call her. But I would like her if she seemed to show more concern for her families’ needs than her lust for power, and if she seemed to have a heart. Sure, she is against killing unborn babies, but what about once her babies/children/teens are here?! Are they the most important thing in her life?!

Shelby on November 28, 2008 at 4:16 PM

Shelby, dude. What’s with the brain envy? My guess is that you’re projecting your fears and phobias onto the Governor. Folks in Alaska hunt and eat game. Wolves are not warm and cuddly little critters and they EAT the GAME that some Alaskans depend upon for their families. The turkey thing came about because during the setup for the interview the “executions” were not happening and they wouldn’t edit the shot later when the Governor’s office requested it. The media could have figured this out had they wanted to know, but that wouldn’t give them another cheap-shot opportunity, right? So, lighten up on the all-hate, all-the-time thing – its the holiday season now, you know?

littleguy on November 28, 2008 at 4:38 PM

I have commented on the barbaric practice of AERIAL HUNTING OF WOLVES AND BEARS FROM PLANES/HELICOPTERS! Palin supports this cruelty.

The wolves were culled, because of the caribou herds. There have been numerous replies about this already.

Palin did a happy-happy-oh-look-at-me interview IN FRONT OF ANIMALS BEING SLAUGHTERED!

Yeah, Sarah Palin hunts and kills her own food, an age-old American tradition. If you’re vegan, that’s your business. For those who eat animals, it is the most dignified way to consume them, following the natural order of the food chain and allowing the animals their freedom in the wild.

Matthew Scully wrote her speech

Scully wrote a generic outline that could be used for any VP candidate, as nobody knew who it would be until hours before her appearance at the Dayton, OH rally.

As for “babies/children/teens that are already here”

Alaska seems to be proactive in helping their citizens and trying to lower the teenage pregnancy rate.

At the link… almost 71% of the teen pregnancies are born and not aborted. And they have lowered the teen pregnancies by 34% over the years.

http://www.guttmacher.org/pubs/state_data/states/alaska.html

“Among the 50 states and the District of Columbia, Alaska ranked

*1st in service availability;
*14th in laws and policies;
*1st in public funding; and
*2nd overall.

*service availability—how well the states meet existing need for subsidized contraceptive services and supplies;

*laws and policies—whether their laws and policies are likely to facilitate access to contraceptive services and information; and

*public funding—the extent to which they devote their own revenues, and leverage potential federal dollars, to support the delivery of publicly supported contraceptive services and support.”

Palin provided a massive funding hike for pregnant teens and raised funding for mentally disabled children 175% over the former administration.

I adore animals, but I also eat them. Are you vegan? Because unless you are, I don’t think you’re in any position to cast aspersions about hunters. The turkey on your Thanksgiving plate is as dead as any caribou Sarah Palin has shot and turned into stew. In fact, I might argue the caribou is better off: At least it got to live out its life in the wild instead of in a filthy disgusting poultry house, crammed in with thousands of other birds.

As for whether or not she was pregnant when she got married — who cares? That’s fodder for TMZ and other gossip sites. It has no bearing on her ability to govern. Besides, I’m pretty sure Nancy Reagan was pregnant when she and Ron were married and he turned out to be the greatest president of our time.

Look out Ronald McDonald; you serve all kinds of animals so your image with TROLLS and/or kids is BAD to say the least!

Well-be Shelby
