1. Execute her…financially.

2.They should also be screamed at endlessly for being amoral monsters.

3.I hope that woman is treated like a pariah for her remaining life.

All the Above as she spends the rest of her life in Iran.

One of the hideous monster's lawyers? Orin Kerr.

Need more on Orin Kerr? Check out Volokh.com. Check out the Orin Kerr post where he extolls the virtues of Eric Holder for AG, the mutt who shepherded the infamous Clinton pardon of Marc Rich.

Orin Kerr. The reason Shakespeare said what he said about lawyers.

Agreed… The Internets has really cheapened the political/ other discourse. People can say things anonymously that they wouldn’t dare saying to someone’s face.

Or, when they do get called down for what they said, they'll just try to say it was only a joke.

What sets this case apart is that the victim was, essentially, a child and the perp an adult...
adults looking and behaving like spoiled little brats...
RightTurnOnly on November 27, 2008 at 2:35 AM

Finally. Thank you!

As my folks describe it, there was once a virtual conspiracy of adults -- neighbors, relatives, teachers, friends -- to see to it that kids didn't get away with much. It was especially true in small towns. Kids could roam all over town under the watchful eyes of somebody, and there weren't pervs and paroled pervs on every block. Seeing to the safety of kids and correcting them (usually by telling) was every adult citizen's duty. That's what I call "The Good Old Days."

Today, if a teacher goes off meds and even thinks of disciplining a kid, the adult brats scream "quit picking on my kid; he wouldn't do that; blah, blah, blah!!!"

On the subject of television, lots of people think the entertainment is desensitizing, but I wonder if the mixing of news and fiction programming (there's a difference?) is the cause. Television has an immediacy, yet it is distancing. You see a flood in Iowa, but it comes out of the same box as a movie about a flood in Iowa. Radio is different somehow. Hmmm...

I find it disturbing that anyone, even someone with emotional problems, would commit suicide over a cyber-relationship. This situtation speaks to my concern that the up and coming generation may be in danger of losing their sense of reality and their ability to interact in the real world.

What sets this case apart is that the victim was, essentially, a child and the perp an adult. Once upon a time people understood that grownups were supposed to protect the young and set an example. Now the lines are completely blurred, with adults looking and behaving like spoiled little brats and the kids pushed into sexualization. As for Lori Drew, she will pay for this--literally--for the rest of her ruined life.

Yep. We’ve known for years that violent media causes desensitization, pornography increases unrealistic expectations and harms relationships, Second Life causes all kinds of problems, and kids sitting together in Starbucks don’t talk to each other since they are too busy texting kids that aren’t there. It’s weird, and a lot of it has to do with parents not paying enough attention to the kids.

I find it disturbing that anyone, even someone with emotional problems, would commit suicide over a cyber-relationship. This situtation speaks to my concern that the up and coming generation may be in danger of losing their sense of reality and their ability to interact in the real world.

A couple of quick antedotes: On September 11, 2001 I was watching events unfold live with my junior high class. I teared up and left the room quietly to regain composure when the second tower fell. Later that day one of the boys ask me why it had affected me in that way. I commented something to the effect that we were witnessing the deaths of those poor people and he was genuinely taken aback and admitted to me that it had not dawned on him that real people were really dieing.

Secondly, about a week ago my family and I were enjoying a pizza in a restuarant when a college basketball team (junior college) filed in overwhelming the room. My back was to them and I kind of cringed thinking our quiet dinner was over. But when they sat down they were almost completely silent. I turned and saw that most of them were texting other people on their cell-phones and completely oblivious to the people around them. Maybe it was a big win and they were texting home, but that is not the impression I got.

Anyway, I don't pretend to know the solution, but my oldest is 7 and is not yet allowed to use the internet without supervison. We will think long and hard about what how to allow him to utilize today's technology without losing touch with reality.

Anyway, I don’t pretend to know the solution, but my oldest is 7 and is not yet allowed to use the internet without supervison. We will think long and hard about what how to allow him to utilize today’s technology without losing touch with reality.

Background:

Krause cited testimony from several witnesses who said Drew and her co-conspirators planned to print out Meier's correspondence with "Josh" and confront her at school or at a mall to mock her for falling for a non-existent boy. The three had an "elaborate scheme to inflict maximum humility on a teenage girl" by building her up only to "tear her down" he said. He cited the fact that the ruse lasted a month as evidence of the level of energy the conspirators put into it and said it went beyond "a mere prank or hoax."

Their actions were all the more egregious because Drew and her daughter knew that Meier was taking medication and seeing a psychiatrist for depression, and because Sarah Drew knew that Meier had threatened suicide in the past, he said.

This is a sad case, but come on people, our laws should reflect the fact that horrible words are not the same as horrible actions, and that no one can make you do something to yourself. Bullying is terrible--as a small toad of a kid, I was picked on a lot until I learned how to break a nose--but it doesn't make your appendages do things. Your own brain sends freaking electrical impulses to your muscles, in case you didn't know.

Speech crimes are one step away from thought crimes.

Nothing surprises me right now. A defendant can burn an infant to death in a microwave oven and a jury of liberal gits can't agree on the death penalty.

I am totally shocked that this woman got off lightly with what she did. However, I believe that having that kind of guilt forever and ever would be this woman's karmic punishment.
