[...] I outlined specific objections to appointing Bill Clinton to the Senate in November, and those arguments remain just as valid: How can any analysis of a plan to send Bill Clinton to Congress fail to mention his impeachment and trial in 1998? Whether one believes the impeachment and trial to be appropriate — and the impeachment was an impressively bipartisan affair — the fact is that Congress heavily penalized this president for transgressions that cost him his bar membership. Should Paterson overlook relatively clean alternatives to give an impeached former President a seat in that same body? The deliberate oversight of this rather large defect renders this little more than mindless cheerleading for the Clinton brand.
<blockquote>Umm- No. Impeachment is not conviction, that’s why the impeachment process for Clinton included a vote to convict & remove from office, or to acquit. He was not convicted, hence remained in office.

There are multiple articles (I think some referred to in this thread) which talk about the senators who voted to convict or acquit him.

Uhhh yes it is!!! Impeachment is a conviction! and the far left will not acknowledge that no matter what! Uh back to school for you too!

It's most assuredly in keeping with democRat tradition. After all, good ol' Alcee Hastings was impeached and removed from his judgeship and he was since elected! Promise those democRat voters access to the Treasury and they'll vote for a sack of old dried-up cat turds.

<blockquote>...the little detail of Bill serving in same body that debated whether to convict him after his impeachment....</blockquote>

Well, to be fair the Senate didn't actually do that, it just went through the motions. And considering the senators we already have, would Senator Bill really lower the tone?

Well impeachment happened but conviction didn’t so I guess its possible for him to be a senator. I doubt he wants to give up his presidential pension and other perks however.

Why would Billie "cigar stuffer" Clinton take the <strong>pay cut</strong>??

Supposedly he's making millions from his speeches and international consulting....

I don't think that the senate is enough of a bully pulpit for him.

Maybe Scotus but I'm not sure about that either. Maybe he'll take a job with the secret service strip searching the female visitors to the whitehouse.

I thought the idea was for Bill to be caretaker for 2 years so Patterson wouldn't need to choose among the various egos who aspired to the Senate, but have the voters choose.

How many people that would be in the senate next year voted to convict (on at least one charge):

<strike>Abraham</strike>, <strike>Allard</strike>, <strike>Ashcroft</strike>, Bennett, Bond, Brownback, Bunning, <strike>Burns</strike>, <strike>Campbell</strike>, Cochran, <strike>Coverdell</strike>, <strike>Craig</strike>, Crapo, <strike>DeWine</strike>, <strike>Domenici</strike>, Enzi, <strike>Fitzgerald</strike>, <strike>Frist</strike>, <strike>Gorton</strike>, <strike>Gramm</strike>, <strike>Grams</strike>, Grassley, Gregg, <strike>Hagel</strike>, Hatch, <strike>Helms</strike>, <strike>Hutchinson</strike>, Hutchison, Inhofe, Kyl, <strike>Lott</strike>, Lugar, <strike>Mack</strike>, McCain, McConnell, <strike>Murkowski</strike>, <strike>Nickles</strike>, Roberts, <strike>Roth</strike>, <strike>Santorum</strike>, Sessions, Shelby, <strike>Smith (NH)</strike>, <strike>Smith (OR)</strike>, <strike>Stevens</strike>, <strike>Thomas</strike>, <strike>Thompson</strike>, <strike>Thurmond</strike>, Voinovich, <strike>Warner</strike>

J.Q. Adams served in the House after his presidency.

Johnson served as President, was impeached but not convicted, then served as senator. He died early in his senate term. I think he was also in the house of representatives before his presidency, but I'm not positive about that part.

So, Clinton wouldn't be the first President to later serve as Senator, nor even the first impeached one to do so.

I'll be really, really surprised if he does this. It might cut into his lucrative speaking/writing career. Though he may have to back off on that anyway if Hillary is S.O.S. Hmmm....

The media have apparently deluded themselves into thinking that we great unwashed are just dying for a return of that grubby thing known as the Clinton Administration. In 2000, I kinda felt a national sigh of relief that Bill was finally going. I guess we sighed too soon.

Well, if he doesn't go with Billy, then you might want to get used to the sound of <em>Senator Eliot Spitzer</em>.

His wife lets him come home for <strong>some</strong> reason...
