Georgia Senate poll: Chambliss up 3

It looks like the Georgia Senate run-off may get as close as the general election — and the latest Politico poll puts the two candidates in roughly the same position.  Saxby Chambliss leads Jim Martin by three, within the margin of error, the same margin that he held at the end of the general election.  This time, though, Martin may not get the turnout model he needs to win:

Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss holds a narrow lead over Democrat Jim Martin in the Dec. 2 Georgia Senate runoff, according to a new Politico/InsiderAdvantage poll.

The poll shows Chambliss leading Martin by three points, 50 to 47 percent, with three percent of respondents undecided. The first-term GOP senator’s lead is within the poll’s four-point margin of error. The Politico/InsiderAdvantage poll surveyed 523 likely voters on November 23.

The poll numbers are almost identical to the general election results, when Chambliss fell just short of the 50 percent necessary to win the seat outright on Election Night. He led Martin 49.8 to 46.8 percent, with a Libertarian candidate taking three percent of the vote.

So far in early voting, though, Martin’s getting bad news:

But the early signs are not encouraging for Martin. During the presidential election, African-Americans composed a record 30 percent of the electorate in Georgia — about 5 points higher than in the 2004 presidential campaign. And in early voting, they totaled 35 percent of the vote.

In the runoff, even as Democrats are vigorously encouraging supporters to vote early, only 22.7 percent of the 150,500 ballots so far have been cast by African-Americans.

The lower turnout among African-American voters could be fatal to Martin’s hopes.  The Strategic Vision poll shows massive support for Martin among black voters, 89-8.  The SV turnout model relies on blacks comprising at least 25% of the vote.  The fewer that Martin gets to the polls, the better for Chambliss.

Voter enthusiasm for Martin has declined since the general election.  Martin got his momentum from the massive numbers of Obama voters, most of whom appear less interested in the remaining down-ticket race.  Chambliss may not have that problem, since John McCain didn’t generate an enthusiastic response from the Republican base, meaning that Chambliss’ voters will be motivated more by Chambliss himself.  Republicans have the secondary motivation to deny Obama a filibuster-proof Senate by ensuring Chambliss’ re-election.

Either way, it looks like it will go down to the wire.  Republicans around the country who want to keep at least one potential check on the excesses of single-party government had better start actively supporting the Chambliss effort.  You can help by contributing to Saxby Chambliss here or at the NRSC, and learning more about Martin’s record here.

He don’t deserve it….. but he got my vote. I am still holding my nose!

I would bet Obama is trying to hold off anything controversial until these runoffs are taken car of.

right2bright on November 25, 2008 at 8:43 AM

Oh no! More polls!

Martin will win Franken style. The whole thing is is rigged and the spineless GOP will do nothing to prevent the theft of this seat.

My thoughts intially, but we’re eating crow after the general election for laughing off Rasmussen’s number and some others that got it right.

Chambliss might win this with the help of libertarians who went to Barr. I would even think the libertarians would be for halting any aspirations by the democRATS to get their filibuster-proof senate.
McConnell has a huge task of holding ground and getting every single republican together to vote against the liberals in the Senate.
I really don’t see McConnell doing that since he disappointed me for voting for the crap sandwich.

jencab on November 25, 2008 at 8:55 AM

You would not believe the TV Commercials running down here…they are simply outrages. Democrats have the audacity to blame Saxby for the crap sandwich bill and all of the economic troubles we are experiencing. They are even saying that he does not support the middle class but gives the ultra-rich big tax breaks. Martin is simply unacceptable.

A lot of Obama voters didn’t even know the names of the people downticket until they got to the polls. Their lack of enthusism now is not shocking.

It makes me chuckle whenever I hear someone talk about how Obama ran the cleanest, most honest campaign in history.

Effective? Highly. Honest? Not so much.

I like the commercial where Saxby is saying that he doesn’t know what a “recession” means. Nice splicing.

In the past, when we’ve had run-offs here in Georgia, hardly anyone shows up to vote. Although here in Gwinnett County, there have been long lines to vote early. The problem is DeKalb County.

I’ll be another one holding my nose too.

moonsbreath on November 25, 2008 at 9:07 AM

Until we can CLEAN HOUSE of all the ones we have to “hold our noses” and vote for just to prevent a Dem from winning… The Conservative movement is just like the movement I had this morning… Feels good, but does nothing long term… Conservatives MUST force out all the old farts that are either RHINO’s or SPINELESS / GUTLESS windbags that do NOT carry the Conservative message and values!

Mark Garnett on November 25, 2008 at 9:14 AM

I haven’t heard of Obama going to GA for MArtin.

Very telling.

He can’t afford to spend political capital this early and come up short.

Democrats have the audacity to blame Saxby for the crap sandwich bill and all of the economic troubles we are experiencing.

Well he is an incumbent and incumbents get blamed for what is happening. Not that shocking really. And Saxby DID vote for the bailout which to be is unacceptable. Not to mention he was initially for amnesty. Not to mention he was one of the architects of the original mortgage bailout bill that cost $300B. Not to mention he was one of the Gang of 10.

I mean yeah I want him to win so that Obama doesn’t get 100% of what he wants. But in reality Saxby is just a little bit better than Martin would be. Saxby is a moderate liberal. Martin is a full blown liberal.

Why am I having a hard time ginning up enthusiasm over the re-election of that tireless advocate for the people, Senator Chambliss?

lodge on November 25, 2008 at 9:33 AM

I don’t trust RINOs. Sending Chambliss back gives us better numbers on paper, but the rubber doesn’t hit the road till he votes on something. Is he going to support conservative principles or help the Dems push through their agenda?

Dee2008 on November 25, 2008 at 9:39 AM

It’s a shame that we have to hope Georgia’s version of Goober Lindsay Graham wins re-election in order to avoid a filibuster proof Senate. Chambliss is an absolute clown who doesn’t know his arse from third base.

Percy_Peabody on November 25, 2008 at 9:41 AM

Unless Obama Girl and Will.i.am get involved in this race, I think Chambliss has it, and by more than 3 points. Jim Martin just doesn’t have the charisma and pop culture appeal necessary to get democrats out to vote.

TedInATL on November 25, 2008 at 9:42 AM

GA is a red state (McCain won it by 5 points) and Chambliss is the incumbent. Why isn’t he doing better in the polls? Is there something in his voting record that people dislike?

All right factoid, don’t rub it in… ;-/

RD on November 25, 2008 at 10:27 AM

The problem is DeKalb County.

Yes, the crime, the horrible test scores, the reliance on the gov’t, the questionable elemen……oh, you mean voting.

Why isn’t he doing better in the polls?

Like Isackson, he’s a typical GOP suit. No one can name a single thing that either has done except to follow what the party tells them to do. They could stay at home & let the RNC cast their ballots for them; they wouldn’t be different than what they do.

And as we’ve all found out, RNC does not equal conservative.

rjwest21 on November 25, 2008 at 10:30 AM

Sorry, cast “votes”, not ballots.

rjwest21 on November 25, 2008 at 10:31 AM

I’m sitting this one out. I refuse to vote for a RINO in a time when the Republicans need to figure out which way they want to move ideological.
Low voter turnout doesn’t just hurt Martin.
Saxby’s greatest hits.

1) On committee which crafted the Amnesty legislation (Remember that? He helped write it)

2) On committee which crafted the Senate energy bill they are trying to hoist on us. (You know the one which consist of wait on the wind and ride a bike.) What really frosted my butt on that one is at the same time the Gang of Whatever was taking to the podium and microphones to announce this plan, Nancy Pelosi was adjourning the House and turning out the lights on the Republicans without bringing up their energy bill for a vote and she went on her 5 week book tour.

3) Was in the lead in crafting the bailout legislation which has let the genie out of the bottle now.

In regards to point #3 it is comical down here in regards to the commercials being run by the Dems. Last night in back to back commercials the first one blasted Saxby for voting for the $700 Billion bailout and then the next one accused him of blocking the Obama Economic Recovery Plan, which consists of just more of the same.

Why am I having a hard time ginning up enthusiasm

I got your enthusiasm right here: There’s an Alaskan headed your way. The ‘Cuda is campaigning for Chambliss on Monday, Dec. 1st. Rallies: 8:30 a.m. in Augusta; 11:00 a.m. in Savannah; 1:30 p.m. in Perry; and 4:00 p.m. in Atlanta. More info here. Other outlets are also providing additional details.

I think his sabotage of the house Republicans’ #dontgo energy bill efforts is still fresh in the minds of many Georgia conservatives.

TedInATL on November 25, 2008 at 12:21 PM

I think it’s a good sign that The One has only deigned to record a radio commercial for Martin. I think if his people thought Martin had a realistic chance, he would have been down here by now. I also think it shows how little confidence the Obama people place in Uncle Joe Biden that he hasn’t been here to gaffe/campaign.

meltenn on November 25, 2008 at 12:18 PM

I saw that too. How much you want to bet those rallies will be sold out? She’ll pull Saxby over the finish line.

Hey Saxby!!!!!! change your ways!!!!! the next Republican primary you will be replaced!

Even in spite of all of that, I’ll probably still go to the polls and punch the button for Saxby “Chicken Sandwich” Chambliss.

All I need is a button to wear that says, “I Voted For The Chicken Sandwich.” Something reminiscent of the 1991 Edwin Edwards-vs.-David Duke campaign in Louisiana, where buddies of mine left the voting booth chanting (or wearing) the slogan, “I voted for the crook.”
