Putting aside that she is a woman, and may possibly be the first woman POTUS, I like that she is a good speaker and has strong values. If only Hunter were as proficient a speaker, I think he would have beaten Mac out of the race early on.

I’d suggest that you are selling Hoover short. He got handed a crappy situation and was unfairly blamed for it. If you look at his entire record you’ll see he that he isn’t as bad as you suggest. Reagan was probably more effective and certainly the better politician but, again, it’s all about context.

I’m a historian by training and you simply can’t make sweeping comparisons that pits the President of the late 1920s with the President of the early 1980s. The challenges and constraints were completely different as were the mechanisms for public policy. The income tax system for public funding, as an example, was completely different as was the mindset about what the role of the Federal government was. Much of this changed under FDR’s socialism and the aftermath of WWII when the US emerged as a world power beyond dispute. Context matters.

I appreciate your defense of Hoover, and he did get a bum rap in many ways. But when the stock market crash happened, Hoover showed no apparent awareness of the cause and kept the government meddling with the economy. He pushed for artificially high wages, and raised the top tax bracket from 24% to 68%, both of which made the recession deeper. The Smoot-Hawley Act he signed virtually destroyed any chance the economy had to recover.

So, he was handed a bad situation and made it worse, as opposed to Reagan, who was handed a bad situation and made it much, much better. It’s true that the bad situation Hoover faced was worse than the one Reagan faced, and if Hoover had at least managed to alleviate the depression, you might be able to compare them. But he only made it worse.
