Hot Air poll: Who should replace Colmes?

It occurs to me that our readership, given its size and political bent, is probably far more representative of the Fox News audience than TV Newser’s is, and I know for a fact that at least a few FNC producers read HA. By all means, continue to vote in TVN’s poll — that’s the one cable news execs follow — but let’s see what actual Hannity fans think.

John McCain.

Bill Clinton! Who’s with me?!
Wyznowski on November 24, 2008 at 3:33 PM
Bring in a chick.
Or if this doesn’t goto Powers.
Get a new show.
Call it Megyn & Kirsten
The ratings will be through the roof.
YellowDawg on November 24, 2008 at 3:33 PM
Wow, two posts out of one story.
It’s a blockbuster day for you AP.
BKennedy on November 24, 2008 at 3:33 PM
I’d like to see rotating hosts. Don’t settle on any one person.
But I’m afraid it will be Bob Beckel.
Kenrod on November 24, 2008 at 3:33 PM
James Carville would be hilarious. I know he’s a far left partisan hack, but for some odd reason, I have a strange respect for him. Maybe because he is who he is and isn’t afraid of it unlike so many on the left. Oh, they’re all coming out now but he’s been this way for years.
That said, him and Hannity would brawl quite frequently.
Texas74 on November 24, 2008 at 3:33 PM
Juan Williams? No…not far left enough. Beckel? Puh-lease. The guy gives douchebaggery a bad name and has no credibility after giving weight to the Michelle Obama tape rumor, then blaming the rumor-mongering on right-wing bloggers. Susan Estrich? Are you kidding me? Not with that nails-on-the-chalkboard voice.
First choice KP, second choice Carville.
flipflop on November 24, 2008 at 3:34 PM
If by “blockbuster” you mean “slow Thanksgiving week,” I plead guilty.
Allahpundit on November 24, 2008 at 3:34 PM
Susan Estrich’s voice is enough to drive people to jump off a balcony.
I’ve lost respect for Beckel.
Powers is the clear choice, imho. The only I’d watch the show…
bloghooligan on November 24, 2008 at 3:35 PM
Snagglepuss is my nominee and actually, who would notice the difference?
NoDonkey on November 24, 2008 at 3:36 PM
What’s John Edwards doing these days….?
JohnTant on November 24, 2008 at 3:36 PM
I know [Carville's] a far left partisan hack…
Texas74 on November 24, 2008 at 3:33 PM
Actually, I’m not even sure he has his own ideology. He’s just a partisan hack, and a damned good one at that. The brawls could be spectacular at times. But KP’s still my first choice.
flipflop on November 24, 2008 at 3:37 PM
Howard Dean. EEEEURRRAHHHH!
silenced majority on November 24, 2008 at 3:37 PM
Hate to say it, but I don’t want a moderate lefty like KP. Sean Hannity is an outright conservative, and I’d want to see an outright liberal like Carville. Beckel’s too much of a dodger, Williams is another moderate, and Estrich…no.
I’d say James Carville or Michael Kinsley if they could get him.
MadisonConservative on November 24, 2008 at 3:37 PM
Crap…forgot to block quote Texas74 at 3:37.
flipflop on November 24, 2008 at 3:38 PM
We should just have ‘Hannity’s America’ 7-days a week.
sonja13 on November 24, 2008 at 3:38 PM
Carville’s self-deprecation and humor go a long way towards making him palatable. But he’s also a walking circus.
Kirsten Powers and Juan Williams would be good choices if Hannity wants to have a good debate about issues. But neither are provocative enough to equal Hannity. I can’t imagine Kirsten or Juan grilling guests.
Estrich and Beckel are has-beens who are never right about anything, so they fit the Colmes template.
Kenrod on November 24, 2008 at 3:39 PM
Powers without a doubt!
Hannity with eye candy! And smart honest eye candy at that!
Another solo hour of Hannity? not so much!
He gets on a rail sometimes that you just cannot get him away from, talking point city.
HoosierCon on November 24, 2008 at 3:41 PM
None of the above. Colmes is bailing prior to Obama’s inauguration so he isn’t collateral damage when the mob comes to get Hannity for merely existing in at the dawn of the After Obama era.
Christien on November 24, 2008 at 3:41 PM
Rachel Maddow. It wouldn’t help with the gender balance, it would still be 2 men on one show.

Just A Grunt on November 24, 2008 at 3:42 PM
Fox needs to find a way to blend in conservative blogs to the show, so more of the Fox viewing audience will begin to read the blogs and bypass the MSM bias filter, IMO. seems like an obvious trend as well.
again, fire Hannity and give AP his wish: “AllahPundit and Powers”….sitting in a uh, studio.
jp on November 24, 2008 at 3:42 PM
I’d love nothing more than to spend an hour each evening looking at KP, but the job calls for someone a little further to the left than KP. Juan Williams is also probably too moderate in recent years. Susan Estrich is too hysterical (and not the funny kind). Carville is — well, let’s just admit it: he’s insane. Not zany Uncle Fester crazy, either. I expect someday to open a newspaper and see where Carville has disembowled someone for praising Bill Clinton too faintly. Frankly, I worry for Mary and the children.
No, the best foil for Hannity, IMHO, would Beckel. He goes over well with Hannity, they are similarly strong personalities with similarly ideological frameworks. Beckel is a lot smoother than Hannity, and would challenge him in ways Colmes never could, but the show would be better than it’s ever been.
RegularJoe on November 24, 2008 at 3:42 PM
Beckel and Carville would be entertaining … for a while, then they would start irritating people. (I know this is what happened to me when Ron Kuby and Curtis Sliwa did a similar show on radio. Kuby was funny until his intentional lying/misleading with a smile routine became unbearable. Eventually, Beckel or Carville would lose viewers who watch every night. Kirsten or Juan would be good and very watchable. However, the Left might complain that they are not liberal enough, but who cares?
jerseyman on November 24, 2008 at 3:42 PM
Tough call between Powers and Carville. Carville I think would make the show much more entertaining, but Powers would get higher ratings.
And Beckel is a giant turd sandwich.
BadgerHawk on November 24, 2008 at 3:42 PM
I think that wind-bag hack Ed Schultz should do it. I haven’t listened very much to Ed but I think that he and Hannity are somewhat alike outside of political beliefs. They would probably play-off each other pretty well.
I never watched H & C very much, but I kinda liked Colmes when he wasn’t jabbering. He had a sense of humor at times, like when he would hid under the desk from Ann Coulter.
Glenn Jericho on November 24, 2008 at 3:43 PM
How about Bill Clinton? I’d tune in to see that!
silenced majority on November 24, 2008 at 3:44 PM

baldilocks on November 24, 2008 at 3:44 PM
OR, Colmes sees that with Obama changing from so many far-left positions to Bush positions he ran against, its a coming nightmare for him to try to defend as hannity (and the conservative Producer)inevitably calls him on it.
sure seems like a Nightmare awaiting for anyone with the least bit of a concious.
jp on November 24, 2008 at 3:44 PM
Me. It should be me.
Midas on November 24, 2008 at 3:44 PM
I dunno … Powers certainly seems intelligent and at times even objective, but she supported Obama. Even with his known acquaintences, his refusal to release any information of his past, his obvious upbringing and training as a radical anti-American and his very obvious agenda to remake the US into a living hell … she supported him.
Hannity should go solo … or, find a democrat who didn’t support Obama. A real democrat, not a covert communist parading around as one.
Lynn Rothschild?

Powers equals what the Democrats should be, if they were decent people. Since they aren’t, she is instead a “squishy moderate Democrat”.

I voted for Susan Estrich. She is one of the only liberals that I actually respect.
Just give her a throat lozange before the show. Please.

How about Fred Barnes and Bill Krystol. They haven’t been conservative for YEARS.
BTW, could someone PLEASE tell Mort Kondracke to STFU already. He’s about as good for the conservative movement as John McCain. Neither one is conservative so SHUT UP ALREADY!

POWERS!!
She is a smart democrat. She doesn’t hit dirty like Alan would sometimes. (Remember how he said Palin might of impaired her child for giving birth to Trig in Alaska instead of here in the lower 48 when her water broke?)
I am a conservative woman who would like to see her in debates with other guests.
If it is Hannity alone, it will be as boring as Hannity’s America.

I say get rid of Hannity too. He drives me nuts. Try as I might… I can only make it through 10 minutes of his radio show. His ego is out of control and he repeats things over and over and over. And… his jealousy of Rush is ridiculous. He always has to say “I’ve been in radio for 22 years”. He will never be Rush. I say replace the show with Laura Ingram. They can ditch that idiot Huckabee too. Fox is starting to disappoint me in their bending over backwards to the liberals. Enough!!!!

Kirsten Powers is quite cute, but she doesn’t have the cajones to get it done. Juan Williams does, AND he’s polite as hell too. Juan’s da man.

amerpundit on November 24, 2008 at 3:54 PM
Actually, I’m sure there are plenty of Dems who are pro-life and moderate like she is. Believe me not all of the 67 million who voted for Obama are liberal in every policy area. Just like the 63 million who voted for Bush in the previous presidential election weren’t all socially conservative. I think most Americans (whether they vote Dem, Rep, or 3rd part) are all over the place in different issues. Dems, Republicans, and Independents are mostly all decent people.
terryannonline on November 24, 2008 at 3:54 PM
I vote for Bubba The Love Sponge to replace Colmes.
RWLA on November 24, 2008 at 3:55 PM
if Hannity was more of an analytical, Intellecutal type(like a Limbaugh, Levin, Newt, Fred Thompson), I’d be ok with a Full Hour show. Instead Hannity is more of a Conservative ‘good-ole boy’ type, and I’d rather watch an hour of Duke’s of Hazard instead of Hannity Solo.
jp on November 24, 2008 at 3:55 PM
I voted for Carville (if he’s available).
My first choice would have been Susan Estrich…even though her voice drives me nuts, she is bright and reasonable. I think she would be an improvement on Alan Colmes because she wouldn’t just recite Dem talking points. Because she is bright, she would force Hannity to improve and become more creative in his thought and argument.
That said, the show thrives on the electricty and conflict of the arguments (whether real or contrived). To that end, James Carville would be a good replacement. He has an advantage that Susan Estrich doesn’t…he has a quick wit. I find him funny.
The problem is that Sean Hannity might not be up to speed…he too spends too much time on talking points. he couldn’t lay back on those if he was against Carville.
Blaise on November 24, 2008 at 3:55 PM
I think Powers is to smart for Hannity. After a few weeks it would be apparent that Hannity needed Colmes, more then Colmes needed Hannity.
right2bright on November 24, 2008 at 3:55 PM
Rosie O’Donnell. It’d be the only show with a blast radius.
trubble on November 24, 2008 at 3:55 PM
I voted for Powers. If either Estrich or Beckel were to get the job, I’d probably stop watching the program. Those two are irritating.
Sign of the Dollar on November 24, 2008 at 3:56 PM
Hannity’s ego will demand he be solo, it occurs to me. He’ll cancel his other show…end of story.
hippie_chucker on November 24, 2008 at 3:57 PM
AP, how come you didn’t include Harold Ford in your poll? I went to the TVN poll and saw his name — PiZANG!! He’d be perfect. Of the left, well spoken, name recognition, OTF (other than Fox) cred — I hereby withdraw my vote for Beckel and cast the first vote for Ford.
(Actually, my first vote for Ford was an ‘84 Mustang GT, but…)
RegularJoe on November 24, 2008 at 3:57 PM
agree, but as far as the National DNC leaders and almost all of the MSM liberal commentators….she is a rare breed
jp on November 24, 2008 at 3:57 PM
Hannity plays a clip of Obama saying “I’ll put Mr. Burgess up against Sean Hannity any day.” Not sure who Mr. Burgess is, but I’d like to see at least one episode of that, if for no other reason than to see the Obamian get drop-kicked.

Too much family baggage. Trust me. That’s why Barry took his place in the Democratic party.
It can’t be Rosie. NBC is giving her a Variety Show. If we’re lucky, it will only last one program.

RegularJoe on November 24, 2008 at 4:00 PM
Part of the problem is that Hannity overpowers liberals. The point/counterpoint nature of the show became a joke. Of the choices offered, I went for the solo, an expansion of Hannity’s America (as opposed to Obama’s Amerika).
I’d rather see Hannity & Coulter. That would be a riot.
Or, if Sarah Palin upon reflection were to decide that she’s had it with public service, Hannity & Palin would work for me.

Hell … lets go all the way
Palin & Powers
joey24007 on November 24, 2008 at 4:02 PM
I think it should be an expanded panel- an hour’s worth of what they cram into the last 20 minutes of Special Report or Fox News Sunday. Hannity would be the moderator but I think it would breathe new life into the show to have a couple of different voices discussing these issues instead of Hannity asking tough questions and Colmes reading from the DNC script he was provided at the top of the show.

BKennedy on November 24, 2008 at 4:04 PM
He’s not correct. Why have someone on who will just articulate Obama talking points and defend the indefensible? My point was why not have a REAL democrat on. They do exist and they didn’t support Obama. There are democrats that understand who Obama is and what the agenda of the so-called democrat part is. Get them on to explain that the democrat party of today isn’t the democrat party that they’ve fooled people into thinking it is.

Charming. When you’re done being a sore loser, we can continue.
If you’re going to throw a fit about people having voted, in the majority, for Barack Obama to be president, such as to exclude all potential hosts on Fox based on that choice, then the whole “fair and balanced” idea can go right out the window. Now, I’ve given up on Fox since Carl Cameron launched his little post-election character assassination of Palin, but if this is the attitude that will be used to vet commentators for Fox, it will become even more of a joke.
Now be a little more respectful next time.
MadisonConservative on November 24, 2008 at 4:05 PM

Like pimping those stupid country western concerts for whatever cause ad nauseum, and how absolutely syrupy he gets with certain guests who reflect his ideology (and whenever he utters the phrase ”hearts and prayers”). At least he is intellectually honest, like Lanny Davis and to an extent KP.
Colmes on the other hand is an absolute douche. Intellectually dishonest to the core. A true party mouthpiece.
