Alan Colmes leaving “Hannity & Colmes”; Update: A note to KP fans; Update: Hannity to go solo?

Share on Facebook | regular view

Broken by Radio Equalizer, confirmed by Fox News.

In announcing his decision, Colmes said, “I approached Bill Shine (FNC’s Senior Vice President of Programming) earlier this year about wanting to move on after 12 years to develop new and challenging ways to contribute to the growth of the network. Although it’s bittersweet to leave one of the longest marriages on cable news, I’m proud that both Sean (Hannity) and I remained unharmed after sitting side by side, night after night for so many years.”

Colmes will continue to have a presence on FNC as he will serve as a liberal commentator on a variety of FOX News programming, including Foxnews.com’s The Strategy Room and continue hosting his radio program, The Alan Colmes Show on FOX Talk, a division of FOX News Radio. He will also begin developing a weekend program…

Hannity added, “Not only has Alan been a remarkable co-host, he’s been a great friend which is rare in this industry. I’ll genuinely miss sparring with such a skillful debate partner.”

Commenters in the Headlines item are demanding “Malkin & Powers.” Odds are fair that they’ll get half their wish. Hannity could carry the show himself — he does it in “Hannity’s America,” after all — but an hour of him after an hour of O’Reilly, night after night, would be … taxing. Plus, to move from right-wing to very right-wing during primetime would expose the “fair and balanced” credo to even more mockery. The X factor is Rachel Maddow, who still trails far behind H&C in overall viewers but is up from where MSNBC used to be in that time slot and is closing in among the 25-to-54 demo. Do the Foxies try to steal back some of her thunder by hiring a hard lefty, the better to spar with Hannity? If so, er, who? Colmes wasn’t hard left, but he was considerably more doctrinaire than Juan Williams and our favorite liberal; a “Hannity & X” where X is center-left and not temperamentally inclined to play attack dog by badgering guests might be a slow go.

Then again, Hannity’s bound to have sway in who gets picked and it’s no secret he’s a KP fan. She’s on the show every week and frequently on “Hannity’s America.” She’s comfortable with the format, having guest-hosted for Colmes regularly. She’d increase the female presence in the line-up, which will soon drop now that Glenn Beck’s taking over from Hemmer and Kelly at 5 p.m. And she’s leading in the TV Newser online poll. I know where the smart money is. Exit question: According to TV Newser, this has been in the works for months. Wouldn’t/shouldn’t FNC have someone lined up already?

Update: My preference is no secret, but I admit, I’d watch “Hannity & Carville.”

Update: I should have mentioned earlier, if you prefer “Hannity & Powers” to an hour of Hannity solo, it’d pay to make your feelings known at that online poll I linked above. Industry people monitor TV Newser; if there’s a big push for KP, Fox will surely take note. E-mailing would also be good. Send it to Hannity@foxnews.com.

Update: Sounds like they’re leaning towards Hannity solo. As I say, unless you want five nights a week of “Hannity’s America,” you’d better vote/e-mail.

So what will happen to “Hannity & Colmes?” Sean Hannity, the popular conservative commentator, may become the sole host of the program, according to one source close to the network who insisted on anonymity while speaking about private deliberations. Mr. Hannity currently hosts a weekend program, “Hannity’s America,” that may be used as a template for the weekday program. A Fox News spokeswoman said that no decision had been made.

Personally, I don’t think Mrs Malkin will ever agree to co-hosting regularly on Fox News or any other channel, for reasons I’ve stated here before. But if I am to stand corrected by an irrefutable source, it is most likely to be here — in 5… 4… 3… 2…

Maybe its time for an English version. Hannity and Scones.
Move it to sunday mornings. no?

johnnyU on November 24, 2008 at 5:03 PM

I’d watch Hannity and Powers. I haven’t seen her on TV much, but I read a few of her blogs over the course of the election and she seemed to at least be sane and somewhat grounded for a liberal. She actually defended Palin on a few of the ridiculous smears, which I liked. Whatever the outcome, I agree that I don’t really want to see Hannity solo.

Although, Malkin and Powers would get a spot on my Tivo :)

Sir Corky on November 24, 2008 at 5:05 PM

I predict he goes solo or picks a Fox News Liberal (i.e. the one that always says sorry for the actions of the left, and constantly say the right is right)

Sir Corky on November 24, 2008 at 6:12 PM

Good Bye Alan, you can’t leave quick enough. Your voice grates on my nerves and so does your far left thinking. So long, farewell.

shoregulls on November 24, 2008 at 6:27 PM

This was probably suggested earlier. But I’d watch Hannity and Olbermann, of O’b could shrink the size of his head to fit the television studio.

Alexander on November 24, 2008 at 6:30 PM

Plus, to move from right-wing to very right-wing during primetime would expose the “fair and balanced” credo to even more mockery.

While Hannity is undeniably on the right, O’Reilly is not. O’Reilly gave Obama softball interviews on the night of the Republican convention, and has been repeatedly bashing oil companies and President Bush about the bank failures, where the blame belongs on the Democrats in Congress. O’Reilly is NOT a conservative. Not exactly a liberal either, but a loose cannon, that shoots in all directions.

Steve Z on November 24, 2008 at 6:30 PM

Colmes gets kudos for being one of the few leftists with the guts to enter an argument.

But Let’s face it, Hannity would get better ratings on his own.

FNC going right will only push their ratings higher in the new dawn of the “One”.

Oink on November 24, 2008 at 4:03 PM

More than that. Hannity and Colmes pretty much started out at the same place (NYC radio talk show pundits). In the 12 years they have been together on FNC, Hannity has the second most popular national talk show behind Rush Limbaugh, a series on Fox, and H&C. Colmes has a tiny talk radio program and has a better haircut.

Unfortunately, to get the best dynamic, you have to pick the person that most people who read HA wouldn’t be able to stomach.

OK…maybe not Rosie O’Donnell, but you get the idea.

The idea is that someone in the Colmes chair should piss us off. And I can sure think of plenty of ‘em.

Glad to see Alan finally out of the picsha. Not only was I bored with his liberal babel, but he just couldn’t keep his hair colored the same color from week to week. You followin’ me camera guy? Hannity solo would be perfect – to upstage O’Reilly’s left turn of late. Kirsten would be okay. Absolutely NO on Boeckle (barf). Carville would be fun to watch.

I never agree with Alan, but I’ve always been thankful he was around. I’m a huge Hannity fan, but let’s be honest — he can be a bit much sometimes. It really is important to have opposing viewpoints. I think Howard Wolfson would be a good liberal foe. Or there could be rotating liberals.

asc85 on November 24, 2008 at 7:31 PM

I disagree. You definitely get one kind of dynamic when you get polar opposites discussing the same issue with the same guests but I’d suggest that isn’t the best dynamic though it is the forumla used by virtually all cable news programs (except MSNBC which all but scrolls Bush sucks) under the rantings of truly insane pundits.

The best dynamic would come when the “liberal one” and the “conservative one” are able to conceed the strengths and weaknesses in each other’s positions. It isn’t great TV to have real dialogue instead of screaming so there are only rare instances when it occurs.

highhopes on November 24, 2008 at 8:15 PM

jonezee on November 24, 2008 at 7:56 PM

The problem I’ve always seen with H&C is that it is an utter mismatch with Hannity able to extemporaneously engage and respond to what the guest says while Colmes is as lost as Obama without his DNC talking points.

I wish Colmes well but I’d like to see a liberal with a personality and the ability to engage in the same way Hannity does.

highhopes on November 24, 2008 at 8:18 PM

Kirsten Powers? Excellent choice. Is she married? Maddow is just too … dominant for my tastes. KP is:

liberal
experienced with format
not afraid to sock Sean
most of all, she’s HOT

The only problem is that I’d have to get out of my 4-year Sarah Palin contract. :)

If it could be done very discreetly, without to much attention from Alaska, I just might be able to pull it off.

And yes, I have fantasized about me dating KP and through my persuasive powers convincing her of her dormant conservatism or her true self.

I like the pick. Let’s run with it.

By the way, Beck on at 4:00pm Central is WAY cool. Another hour of FNC added to my schedule M to F.

SouthernGent on November 24, 2008 at 9:12 PM

In some ways I admire Hannity for the stands he’s taken when all around him have lost their spines…but let’s face it, his intellect and debate skills run far short of the levels we really need in a conservative media figurehead.

Hannity makes some good points, but he’s too fixated on talking points and doesn’t have the intellectual flexibility to deal with an able debate opposition. I hate to say it, but there were times during the election campaign that I saw him trounced by Obamabots live on air – not because the Obamabots were right, but because Hannity just didn’t have the arguments and the word flow required to correct them. All too often he lets the most ridiculous liberal arguments go because his script wasn’t prepared for them.

How many times has he let the weasel Colmes say something ridiculous and left it unchallenged? Too many times. Colmes is fond of the “hit and run” approach…he gives a lame liberal rebuttal to a point and then changes the subject as quickly as he can, because he’s scared of being called out. Hannity is far too soft on him.

Having said that, I’ll be sad to see Colmes go. I’ll miss screaming at the TV at his incessant inanities every night.

Hannity needs to do some reading to get some decent intellectual ammunition under his belt. Ayn Rand, Frederick Hayek, Henry Hazlitt, George Reisman, that kind of thing. He needs to brush up on his free market economics to deal with the rampant statists and socialists who stink up the show on a regular basis.

That sucks. I’m going to miss him. Even though I disagreed with him on pretty much everything, he was still nice to watch because he’s the only liberal on tv who doesn’t scream, call people names, or go on nutty rants.

As for a replacement, I hope they pick someone because they are good and not because they are sexy.

SoulGlo on November 24, 2008 at 2:49 PM

I’m glad you posted that. Colmes was not a great debater, but he is civil and that goes a long way in my book.

I like Juan Williams. I think the show would be more balanced with Williams in the Colmes seat.

Red State State of Mind on November 24, 2008 at 9:44 PM

I think the better advice to FNC is to re-think/re-format the whole show rather than to find another pleasant liberal to replace Colmes. This simply isn’t a “replacement” for Colmes- like you would replace a burnt out bulb. Hannity and Colmes have a 12 year working relationship you can’t replicate that overnight with providing Hannity with some other Colmes-like liberal.

My advice would be a “grieving period” where H&? cycles through potential liberal foils until they find one with the right chemistry to make the show exciting again (it hasn’t been for years with Hannity and Colmes asking predictable and non-offensive questions).

highhopes on November 24, 2008 at 9:57 PM

I love Hannity’s politics but his personality is over the top and kinna grates on me. I love Colmes’ manners but I can’t stand his politics. Isn’t there anyway we can split them in 2, clone Sean’s politics with Alan’s manners and get the best of both? KP would help get us there.

Hannity solo is a great idea and I’m looking forward to it.

I enjoy Hannity’s point of view and look forward to hearing more of that without Colmes’ smirky contrariness interrupting guests.

This is a big improvement for FOX, glad Colmes is departing the show, glad that Hannity will be solo on the hour (with guests).

S on November 25, 2008 at 12:33 AM

Yeah, but I liked pissing people off by arguing that Fox was fair and balanced. Now that argument is harder to make. I do like hearing both sides, no matter how ridiculous the liberal point of view is in most cases.

Kini on November 25, 2008 at 1:40 AM

There’s no way Carville or Wolfson are let anywhere near that set. Alan Colmes lied down and allowed Hannity and Dick Morris to penetrate him consistently on that “debate” program. Colmes allowed Hannity to dominate segments, to intrude on “his” time and to, quite literally, shout him down. Colmes is also one of the stupidest liberals I’ve ever seen and has no idea how to articulate a progressive position. That’s why he was on Hannnity and Colmes in the first place. In that vein, KP will no doubt replace him as she is equally vaccuous. If Wolfson was on he would continually tear Hannity a new asshole, because Howard Wolfson is actually smart.

Hallejuah!! I hope it’s true and that it stays this way. He can invite ornery Dems on for interviews, but I’m thrilled at the news at a solo Sean. I’ve been pretty much boycotting Fox since the nightmare (election night, of course) b/c of Ailes “edict”, but would still put Sean on once in awhile.

It’ll be nice not to have to change the channel or put the show on mute anymore!

If it is Bob Beckel I’ll NEVER watch. Often Colmes made me want to punch him. (he was a good debater though). Beckel usually makes me want to rip off his head and …. well, you know the rest.

KP would be cool. Probably get great ratings.

Juan Williams might not be too bad. At least he is occasionally rational.

Carville? It might be a good program, but I’ll never watch it. The only way I’d watch a show with ‘the vile one’ in it is if he was co hosting with Michelle Malkin.

Michelle with ANYONE= must see TV.

Another thing that would be a GREAT match, (but not “fair balanced”) would be Hannity & ‘Zo. I guarantee that would draw in some ‘kickass’ ratings AND get the conservative message out superbly.

Hannity solo… Yeah, I could live with that. Not enthusiastically, but it would be better than anything we are LIKELY to see.

Han Solo and Lando Calrissian make a good team too. Hannity & Chewbacca would be OK, too, if he would learn to speak American and refrain from ripping people’s arms off. ;-)

On second thought, if he ripped stupid leftwinger’s arms off, it would be a GOOD thing ;-) If he does that I won’t care if the only thing he speaks is Wookie.

I only know H&C from the internet but I learnt quickly through the campaign that if you read Huffpo or similar sites, you would hear C spouting the same lines, almost word for word on H&C in some interview or another. Not very original ol’ C

Although I did think just now, Colmes must be a secret Palin fan. He wears rimless glasses too! Either that or he’s a candidate for this list. (And it’s a real A-list too)

Hannity & Zo would be a goer. Zo & Colmes would be funnier!

Update: My preference is no secret, but I admit, I’d watch “Hannity & Carville.”

Lord Voldemort is teaching a class at Tulane this Spring, so I imagine he’s a no go.

I could maybe live with KP, especially if she hammers Hannity about his consistent rudeness. Conservative or not, the guy gets on my nerves.
