Alan Colmes leaving “Hannity & Colmes”; Update: A note to KP fans; Update: Hannity to go solo?

Broken by Radio Equalizer, confirmed by Fox News.

In announcing his decision, Colmes said, “I approached Bill Shine (FNC’s Senior Vice President of Programming) earlier this year about wanting to move on after 12 years to develop new and challenging ways to contribute to the growth of the network. Although it’s bittersweet to leave one of the longest marriages on cable news, I’m proud that both Sean (Hannity) and I remained unharmed after sitting side by side, night after night for so many years.”

Colmes will continue to have a presence on FNC as he will serve as a liberal commentator on a variety of FOX News programming, including Foxnews.com’s The Strategy Room and continue hosting his radio program, The Alan Colmes Show on FOX Talk, a division of FOX News Radio. He will also begin developing a weekend program…

Hannity added, “Not only has Alan been a remarkable co-host, he’s been a great friend which is rare in this industry. I’ll genuinely miss sparring with such a skillful debate partner.”

Commenters in the Headlines item are demanding “Malkin & Powers.” Odds are fair that they’ll get half their wish. Hannity could carry the show himself — he does it in “Hannity’s America,” after all — but an hour of him after an hour of O’Reilly, night after night, would be … taxing. Plus, to move from right-wing to very right-wing during primetime would expose the “fair and balanced” credo to even more mockery. The X factor is Rachel Maddow, who still trails far behind H&C in overall viewers but is up from where MSNBC used to be in that time slot and is closing in among the 25-to-54 demo. Do the Foxies try to steal back some of her thunder by hiring a hard lefty, the better to spar with Hannity? If so, er, who? Colmes wasn’t hard left, but he was considerably more doctrinaire than Juan Williams and our favorite liberal; a “Hannity & X” where X is center-left and not temperamentally inclined to play attack dog by badgering guests might be a slow go.

Then again, Hannity’s bound to have sway in who gets picked and it’s no secret he’s a KP fan. She’s on the show every week and frequently on “Hannity’s America.” She’s comfortable with the format, having guest-hosted for Colmes regularly. She’d increase the female presence in the line-up, which will soon drop now that Glenn Beck’s taking over from Hemmer and Kelly at 5 p.m. And she’s leading in the TV Newser online poll. I know where the smart money is. Exit question: According to TV Newser, this has been in the works for months. Wouldn’t/shouldn’t FNC have someone lined up already?

Update: My preference is no secret, but I admit, I’d watch “Hannity & Carville.”

Update: I should have mentioned earlier, if you prefer “Hannity & Powers” to an hour of Hannity solo, it’d pay to make your feelings known at that online poll I linked above. Industry people monitor TV Newser; if there’s a big push for KP, Fox will surely take note. E-mailing would also be good. Send it to Hannity@foxnews.com.

Update: Sounds like they’re leaning towards Hannity solo. As I say, unless you want five nights a week of “Hannity’s America,” you’d better vote/e-mail.

So what will happen to “Hannity & Colmes?” Sean Hannity, the popular conservative commentator, may become the sole host of the program, according to one source close to the network who insisted on anonymity while speaking about private deliberations. Mr. Hannity currently hosts a weekend program, “Hannity’s America,” that may be used as a template for the weekday program. A Fox News spokeswoman said that no decision had been made.

Rachel Maddow is like watching a male host. She sounds and dresses like one. Olby and Maddow were centered around Bush, Palin and McCain hatred. With that gone, I wonder what they’ll embrace now. It seems to have been both the thing that kept them talking and the thing their audience wanted to see. Should be interesting to see if they can find relevance when there’s no one left to attack. Their innate sense of superiority and sneering put downs of the rest of us keep me from watching them much anyway.

Pushing hard for KP in order to earn her affections?

Come on, AP, admit it man. You’re still smitten, old boy. Still smitten.

BacaDog on November 24, 2008 at 3:11 PM

Good riddance to Colmes. He was frequently interrupting conservative guests (a liberal O’Reilly) to “ask” his liberal talking points over and over, many of which were not based in fact. But since he won’t have Bush to kick around anymore, he needs a new line of work.

Kirsten Powers would make a good counterpoint to Hannity–she is a liberal, although less doctrinaire than Colmes. Slightly more doctrinaire, but still a decent interviewer, would be Susan Estrich or Geraldine Ferraro, although Estrich’s voice might grate on some people’s nerves.

Another interesting possibility would be Pat Kaddell, who has been a frequent guest as a “Democratic pollster”. He’s definitely a liberal, but has been known to deviate from the orthodoxy and ask liberals tough questions from time to time.

And if we really wanted to drive up the ratings, how about the ‘Stache: Gerald-O Rivers-A? Might be lots of fun for Hannity!

Steve Z on November 24, 2008 at 3:11 PM

Hannity and Michelle Malkin. There is no need for fair and balanced with the unbalanced left

William Amos on November 24, 2008 at 3:11 PM

Skeletor… it was sure fun to see Dick Morris hand you your head on a platter.
electric-rascal on November 24, 2008 at 2:34 PM

Yeah, I was wondering why The Toe was being so nasty to Skeletor. I’m a little tired of The Toe myself.

Anyway, I do hope they put Kirsten Powers on. Bob Beckel would be awful. He’s off-point and out of touch. The liberal commentator’s job on Hannity & Colmes MUST BE to get Hannity to quit parroting his 2 talking points of the night. Beckel would just start shouting all the time. Powers will be more effective, I think.

Outlander on November 24, 2008 at 3:13 PM

Replace Hannity with Margeret Hoover and have KP as the counterpoint.

Now that’s a show I’d watch!

lorien1973 on November 24, 2008 at 3:16 PM

I think that FoxNews should hire Olbermann to fill Colmes’ spot. Just keep him in a separate studio – or city – from Hannity. This Huntley-Brinkley approach would keep them from physically harming each other. Also, nightly Olby Outbursts would probably make for good Nielsen numbers.

Olby and Maddow were centered around Bush, Palin and McCain hatred. With that gone, I wonder what they’ll embrace now.

Yeah, it will be interesting to see what their shows will look like since all the Dems are fully in power. Although, Palin is up for re-election 20120. So they might bring back Palin hatred just for old times. Bush will probably write a book once he leaves office. So that will be some material for them.

Savage vs. Olbermann ???

Blue_State_Blues on November 24, 2008 at 3:18 PM

Colmes was a good fit because he was liberal, so the “fair and balanced” thing was met, but he was also too wimpy to get in Sean’s way.

I don’t mind the idea of Hannity and Powers. She’s comfortable enough on Fox and doesn’t seem to be an idiot.

Sign of the Dollar on November 24, 2008 at 3:19 PM

Hannity added, “Not only has Alan been a remarkable co-host, he’s been a great friend which is rare in this industry. I’ll genuinely miss sparring with such a skillful debate partner.”

Obviously Hannity has some class, however I seriously doubt he meant what he said about skeletor.

Colmsey is the most wussified and delusional “debater” I have ever had the displeasure of listening to. The man is a pacifist through and through and would be the first to snivel and cower in a corner if we were to be attacked/invaded by our enemies. Skeletor is the poster boy for beta-males and is an embarrassment to real men!

Count to 10 on November 24, 2008 at 3:21 PM

I like watching/listening to KP way more than Hannity. First, she’s hawt. Second, she’s not a talking-points pitching machine.

She’s center-left, rational and quick on her feet. And she’s hawt.

spmat on November 24, 2008 at 3:22 PM

KP and Megyn Kelly-the Show of Shows.
(It’s the Rachel Maddow antidote.)

hippie_chucker on November 24, 2008 at 3:03 PM

That combination would lead the cable ratings in both beauty and brains! But would any men be listening to the debate?

Then again, Hannity might not give up his microphone so easily, and Megyn Kelly is on a lot of other Fox News shows. Maybe she should take over for Brit Hume or Shepard Smith.

1. Pat Caddell…no. We do not need washed-up Carter era people on Fox News. What I want are strong liberals who are going to challenge the Republican guests, just as Hannity challenges the Democrat guests. (I’m a strong conservative myself, but I appreciate having my views challenged from time to time, because I think that’s the best way to intellectually grow.)

2. Geraldo technically is a journalist and thus is not allowed to do opinion shows. We do not want his objectivity tinged for the next time he goes on hurricane patrol.

Hannity & Farrahkahn! Sean would get his lunch money taken and have to eat bean pies every night.

robertnyc212 on November 24, 2008 at 3:28 PM

Fox has enough women already. They are everywhere, or at least it seems like it. And I am a woman. KP is okay, but I think Shelia Jackson Lee would be supremely successful. LMAO!

Carville would be much needed comic relief with Hannity as the world burns, or as we lose all our unique American freedoms thanks to Obama.

McCain, Huckahu Akbar, or any other insane RINO would just drive most of us to desire bamboo shoots to be shoved under our finger nails, so I just as soon NOT have to look at the morons that are unfortunately in my party. If I have to strongly dislike whomever Hannity is arguing with night after night; I would at least like them to be from the Left so I can vent with full and complete satisfaction.

I could not take Hannity alone. THAT would be beyond painful. How about Colin Powell? Dr. Lamont Hill that O’Blatherly has on sooooo often!? Jesse Jackson? Rev. Al Sharpton? Reverend J. Wright? or the new TUCC minister Rev. Moss?

God Save Us!

terryannonline on November 24, 2008 at 3:32 PM

Please no Hannity Solo. It’ll just be a talking point conservative version of Countdown.

BadgerHawk on November 24, 2008 at 3:28 PM

Agreed. Hannity in small doses is endearing, but grates on me after a few minutes. He just breathlessly repeats the same 2-3 talking points over and over and over, with little regard to what his guests actually say. He isn’t nearly as obnoxious as Olbermann, but still is not good. Skeletor, while mostly doing the same thing as Hannity (except from the left side of the aisle), occasionally had moments of sentience, which I appreciated.

Outlander on November 24, 2008 at 3:33 PM

Long overdue. Colmes constantly brags that his solo radio show has an audience one-sixteenth the size of Hannity’s. I haven’t looked that up to verify but even if the claim were true, that’s hardly the basis for an equal partnership.

I don’t see the point to substituting another liberal idiot, though. 20 years ago, I would have thanked God for a TV news program that only wasted HALF of my time. Bit in this day and age, there’s way too much competition to justify such a horrifically unbalanced format.

clancy_wiggum on November 24, 2008 at 3:37 PM

Michelle Malkin belongs in the conservative seat, and she would drink any libtard’s milkshake, from Carville to Ward Churchill.

Hannity, though a true conservative, is ill-prepared when it comes to hardcore debate. Anyone more voracious than Colmes will chew him to pieces. Colmes has been easy on Hannity, who misses easy points. Assuming Hannity stays, putting him opposite a prostituting whoremonger like Beckel would sink the ratings. It has to be someone with real liberal bona fides. KP isn’t liberal enough, and she’s not all that snappy in any debate. She looks timid by comparison with someone like Colmes.

We need honest debate. No wussy RINOs and no moderate libs.

Worthy libs: Clarence Paige, Howard Kurtz, Arianna Huffington

Worthy Conservatives: Michelle Malkin, Laura Ingraham, Mark Levin (though he would never do it).

H&C is a working formula, but it can’t be duplicated. It has to change.

Update: Sounds like they’re leaning towards Hannity solo. As I say, unless you want five nights a week of “Hannity’s America,” you’d better vote/e-mail.

Four full hours of Hannity is a bit much even though the show was built around him with Colmes position initially titled LNL (liberal named later). That being said, I’d rather than having just “the liberal one” to counter “the conservative one” they expand the roundtable format from Special Report or Fox News Watch.

Whom ever it is needs to be a true believer. That is why Colmes was so good even though he was laughable to someone like me, he was good for the show because he truely believes the party line as does Hannity. I just wish Hannity would take a serious effort to improve his debating skills though. The very mention of talking points does not win the debate. He does a good job explaining it on Hannity America but misses it on his radio show and on H&C.

Why are people so many people still inculcated with the propagandist notion that no show can ever be hosted by more than one conservative?

OK, so Hannity can’t handle an hour on his own. So what? Why on earth does his partner have to be an apparatchik stooge? There are a great many things in this world about which reasonable people can disagree. Libaralism is nothing but an impediment to that process. This could result in the first intelligent televised political discussion America has seen in decades – if ever.

And this would be a ratings bonanza. Every time the two co-hosts disagreed in the tiniest degree on any issue, every liberal news program on the alphabet networks would feel compelled to comment on it. Basically, unilimited free advertising for Fox!

I don’t know if I could handle Hannity alone night after night. KP would do ok but I don’t think Hannity would attack her properly lest he look like a big meany. Carville would be fantastic, the ratings would go through the roof. People would tune in just to watch the fireworks each night.

Hey, I hear Jessie Jackson is looking for a job.

conservnut on November 24, 2008 at 4:42 PM

You’d watch Hannity + Carville, AP?

I don’t know why in the slightest. I can’t stand the sight of him. Those facial expressions and noises he makes tick me off big time.

nobody can be possibly be as annoying as alan colmes, so anybody is an improvement.

KP will have to get stronger to stand up to Hannity, or he will have to cool his jets and let her get the last word once in a while. Viewers won’t tolerate him bowling her over too frequently. But if they could keep it balanced, the ratings would go up because Colmes had to be a huge drag.

Sorry Esthier

“How about MR. Bennifer to replace Skeletor?”

fixed.

ornery_independent on November 24, 2008 at 4:46 PM

ornery_independent you just read my mind!!

I would not mind missing Ben “Aflac” at all!!!! (thanx Jimmy Kimmel!)

Hey guys time for the chicks to have some eye candy (Hemmer and the sporadic interviews of Father Forgot His Name (that looks like Tobey McGuire) is not enough for me.

I don’t know. I kinda like the original idea.

Esthier on November 24, 2008 at 4:48 PM

Skeletor No!!!!!!!!!!!

Going back to Snake Mountain eh?

That is ok, bring on the Evil Horde next!

Hannity & Beahart, ya know that chick from The View?

or

Hannity & Reno.

or

Hannity & Ostrich. (Susan Estrich) Or whatever the hell her last name is. The one woman, who sounds like she puffed the entire Marlboro company building in one cigarette and forever had the most cigarette induced voice and laugh in human history.

Whoever it is, they have to be really annoying. Skeletor got owned by Dick and Red Rove(r) all the time. I dont want to see KP get owned like that, she is too hot. Susan Ostrich though, may God have mercy on here soul.

Wish we could get Steyn a show somewhere. Dump Shep the Hapless One, give his slot to Steyn….nobody watches news for an hour, when you’ve got blogs…

hippie_chucker on November 24, 2008 at 3:20 PM

I watched Steyn on CSPAN the other night. He gave a speech followed by Q&A at the Federalist Society meeting. He was fantastic. Now there’s a guy who could turn any liberal into a puddle. He needs to be on TV every night.
