Alan Colmes leaving “Hannity & Colmes”; Update: A note to KP fans; Update: Hannity to go solo?

Broken by Radio Equalizer, confirmed by Fox News.

In announcing his decision, Colmes said, “I approached Bill Shine (FNC’s Senior Vice President of Programming) earlier this year about wanting to move on after 12 years to develop new and challenging ways to contribute to the growth of the network. Although it’s bittersweet to leave one of the longest marriages on cable news, I’m proud that both Sean (Hannity) and I remained unharmed after sitting side by side, night after night for so many years.”

Colmes will continue to have a presence on FNC as he will serve as a liberal commentator on a variety of FOX News programming, including Foxnews.com’s The Strategy Room and continue hosting his radio program, The Alan Colmes Show on FOX Talk, a division of FOX News Radio. He will also begin developing a weekend program…

Hannity added, “Not only has Alan been a remarkable co-host, he’s been a great friend which is rare in this industry. I’ll genuinely miss sparring with such a skillful debate partner.”

Commenters in the Headlines item are demanding “Malkin & Powers.” Odds are fair that they’ll get half their wish. Hannity could carry the show himself — he does it in “Hannity’s America,” after all — but an hour of him after an hour of O’Reilly, night after night, would be … taxing. Plus, to move from right-wing to very right-wing during primetime would expose the “fair and balanced” credo to even more mockery. The X factor is Rachel Maddow, who still trails far behind H&C in overall viewers but is up from where MSNBC used to be in that time slot and is closing in among the 25-to-54 demo. Do the Foxies try to steal back some of her thunder by hiring a hard lefty, the better to spar with Hannity? If so, er, who? Colmes wasn’t hard left, but he was considerably more doctrinaire than Juan Williams and our favorite liberal; a “Hannity & X” where X is center-left and not temperamentally inclined to play attack dog by badgering guests might be a slow go.

Then again, Hannity’s bound to have sway in who gets picked and it’s no secret he’s a KP fan. She’s on the show every week and frequently on “Hannity’s America.” She’s comfortable with the format, having guest-hosted for Colmes regularly. She’d increase the female presence in the line-up, which will soon drop now that Glenn Beck’s taking over from Hemmer and Kelly at 5 p.m. And she’s leading in the TV Newser online poll. I know where the smart money is. Exit question: According to TV Newser, this has been in the works for months. Wouldn’t/shouldn’t FNC have someone lined up already?

Update: My preference is no secret, but I admit, I’d watch “Hannity & Carville.”

Update: I should have mentioned earlier, if you prefer “Hannity & Powers” to an hour of Hannity solo, it’d pay to make your feelings known at that online poll I linked above. Industry people monitor TV Newser; if there’s a big push for KP, Fox will surely take note. E-mailing would also be good. Send it to Hannity@foxnews.com.

Update: Sounds like they’re leaning towards Hannity solo. As I say, unless you want five nights a week of “Hannity’s America,” you’d better vote/e-mail.

So what will happen to “Hannity & Colmes?” Sean Hannity, the popular conservative commentator, may become the sole host of the program, according to one source close to the network who insisted on anonymity while speaking about private deliberations. Mr. Hannity currently hosts a weekend program, “Hannity’s America,” that may be used as a template for the weekday program. A Fox News spokeswoman said that no decision had been made.

KP. Hands down.

Finally. It’s official.

I felt this was coming for a while. Alan’s monotone was even more monotonic than usual these last weeks/months.

Another gratuitous prediction from left field: Rachel Ray’s going to stop doing her 30-minute meals show on the Food Network. It’s evident ther her horizons have grown in the last year or so, and that she finds no joy whatsoever in continuing to do the show.

Aww… No more Skeletor for Hannity to kick around? Bummer.

(I have to admit, my wife and I DO enjoy yelling “Shut up Skeletor!” at the T.V. on weeknights. I guess we will have to think up a nickname for whomever replaces “The Bony One”.)

MS-NBC really needs an additional androgynous, inaccurate Obama cheerleader, then they can build a pyramid.

Olby’s generously promised to bend over so Colmes can get on top.

That is going to be the balancing act…I think Kirsten Powers. But she is so much smarter then Hannity, he may nix it.
As someone on the other thread said…it will be a difficult job finding someone that can make Hannity look smart night after night, and not come across as a fool.

I’m glad Alan will be doing a weekend show on Fox. I don’t watch Fox that much on the weekend…snicker.

Yeah, there’s some logic in that.

Since MSNBC has set it’s sights on The Onion’s viewers, Colmes is moving to the Onion to help support their struggle, hoping to one day capture Jon Stewert viewers.

I’m so sad.
I quit watching this show several years ago (partly bcs I have no cable now).
I truly like Sean, but sometimes he can remind me of O’Reilly (whose show I quit watching bcs I now cannot stand him).

Carville is a good suggestion Allah, so is Powers.

How about that guy from the Huffington Post who sometimes appears on the show? He is an editor of the website I think, but he is smart and funny, for a liberal that is. However, should Fox even publicize that site?

But keeping it in family is better. My number one choice is Powers.

KP would be a great co host for Hannity. I’ve seen her rip O’Reilly a new one on a couple of occasions. Colmes was never capable of that.

Ellis Pelican is just an emotional, irrational doofus. He’s not interesting at all.

KP is smart and pretty. If she ever gets boring, her great looks will still be a pleasure to watch.

UltimateBob on November 24, 2008 at 2:49 PM

That sucks. I’m going to miss him. Even though I disagreed with him on pretty much everything, he was still nice to watch because he’s the only liberal on tv who doesn’t scream, call people names, or go on nutty rants.

As for a replacement, I hope they pick someone because they are good and not because they are sexy.

SoulGlo on November 24, 2008 at 2:49 PM

Thank goodness, no more Colmes. He really got on my nerves. Please NOT Juan, either. KP would be fine—if a lib has to be on the show…Frankly, I do not see why though. Rarely is there a conservative balance on any show!

I suppose KP already has the job. I would prefer Hannity and Coulter. That would be fun!

Buckeye Babe on November 24, 2008 at 2:49 PM

KP sounds like best fit if most Fox viewers really are Conservatives and Libs will not watch Fox no matter what already.

This way Sean will still dominate and win most nights, and conservatives have a likeable liberal that is eye candy each night.

Juan Williams would make sense as far as being fair goes.

Ellis would be horrible, way too annoying and Beckel is tough and could beat Sean alot of nights by bullying.

jp on November 24, 2008 at 2:50 PM

KP, but she must wear only a string bikini.

whitetop on November 24, 2008 at 2:51 PM

Yeah, but he has a day job in academia and not nearly as much experience as KP does on air.

Allahpundit on November 24, 2008 at 2:46 PM

Yeah I realize that, but the guy is quick witted and has an answer on the tip of his tongue whenever he is on the air.

And btw, I really would prefer KP as well but sometimes I believe she really is a moderate. I think Fox needs to keep the liberal creds that Colmes brought.

Marine_Bio on November 24, 2008 at 2:54 PM

Beckel is to fat and “sweaty”

Yeah, but as he’s mentioned about a thousand times when he’s been on Fox & Friends; He used to play football.

After his 999th mention, just for the hell of it, I googled him. Turns out his old College doesn’t have a football team. I know he didn’t play Pro.

So I guess he’s referring to his days in the backyard with his grade school buddies.

I guess I’m going to start referring to myself as a former astronaut.

kingsjester on November 24, 2008 at 2:56 PM

I don’t watch Hannity and Colmes often. Skeletor makes me sick. But Hannity, a lot of times sugar coats issues. There are some that he should talk about. On Hannity’s radio show, He is always in a hurry. I think he has gotten a big ego lately. Is sad because I think Hannity is a great American. But his ego is getting in the way.

sheebe on November 24, 2008 at 2:56 PM

KP is my vote. Rosie made me lol, I’d watch that.

Perhaps if KP takes over for Colmes, we will hear Hannity let loose one night with “Kirsten, you ignorant slut!”

Mallard T. Drake on November 24, 2008 at 2:56 PM

I’d watch “Hannity & Carville.”

I would also love to watch carville and Hannity go at it. But Carville has been with CNN for so long, Fox would have to offer him big money to bring him over. Lately they’ve spent a ton on Beck, Hannity, and O’Reilly. I guess they could put out more for Carville.

We here in HotAir ARE family, we ARE friends, even thru our virtual world, we ARE connected. As such we should re-commit ourselves to that common cause, to assisting our movement, building new friendships, to unity and electorial sucess. Thank you ALL for choosing HotAir for our battles against the Messiah, now settle back for a wonderful Holiday season and a great 2009 for Conservative gains…
