NYT columnist needs to read the Constitution

Do the editors of the New York Times’ opinion pages ever exercise editorial control over their content? I missed Gail Collins’ ignorant and obtuse entry yesterday while traveling, but it’s worth highlighting for its sheer stupidity. She wants George Bush to resign now so that Barack Obama can start running the country before the inauguration:
Thanksgiving is next week, and President Bush could make it a really special holiday by resigning.
Seriously. We have an economy that’s crashing and a vacuum at the top. Bush — who is currently on a trip to Peru to meet with Asian leaders who no longer care what he thinks — hasn’t got the clout, or possibly even the energy, to do anything useful. His most recent contribution to resolving the fiscal crisis was lecturing representatives of the world’s most important economies on the glories of free-market capitalism.
Putting Barack Obama in charge immediately isn’t impossible. Dick Cheney, obviously, would have to quit as well as Bush. In fact, just to be on the safe side, the vice president ought to turn in his resignation first. (We’re desperate, but not crazy.) Then House Speaker Nancy Pelosi would become president until Jan. 20. Obviously, she’d defer to her party’s incoming chief executive, and Barack Obama could begin governing.
As a bonus, the Pelosi presidency would put a woman in the White House this year after all. On the downside, a few right-wing talk-show hosts might succumb to apoplexy. That would, of course, be terrible, but I’m afraid we might have to take the risk in the name of a greater good.
The problem we have is not a vacuum at the top, but an overactive executive throwing money away like there’s no tomorrow — and which has actually intimated that to excuse their actions. They’ve spent more money in a few short weeks than any time in American history. At the same time, Bush has negotiated a status-of-forces agreement with Iraq and worked with the G20 to coordinate other economic policies. He’s not taking two months off, although Congress might take most of December as a vacation.
Beyond her ignorance of the President’s schedule, Collins shows a remarkable ignorance of the Constitution and of American government. Let’s focus first on the practical implications of her suggestion. The sudden resignation of the duly elected executive would bring government to a standstill. Obama hasn’t had enough time to transition between the Bush administration to his team, and Pelosi hasn’t even thought about it. What happens in the meantime? Congress hasn’t even received the nominations of the political appointees from Obama. The new White House staff hasn’t even been chosen.
And Pelosi will suddenly be able to run the executive branch? Uh, sure. Collins bases this on the fact that she has two X chromosomes and nothing else. In fact, while celebrating the idea of making a woman temporary President, she then says that Pelosi will simply do what another man will order her to do. That little bit of irony somehow escapes Collins, along with common sense and procedural issues.
More importantly, no one voted for Pelosi to be president. The succession act Collins references exists to ensure continuity in case of disaster, not on the whim of a constipated New York Times columnist whose need for instant gratification apparently outweighs the rest of her cerebral processes.
We have representative government with legal processes in place to protect against instability and abuse. Bush has the responsibility to fulfill the rest of his term and to assist Obama in transitioning smoothly between the two administrations in order to ensure the stability of the US government. Our constitutional form of government is strong enough to allow for this kind of transition, which it has for 220 years.
Obama will be President on January 20, 2009, and not before. If Gail Collins can’t wait for that date, then perhaps the New York Times should send her on an extended leave of absence so that she doesn’t further embarrass herself or her paper in the next two months.

On the other hand, if we held the inauguration now we could begin complaining about Obama’s regime and get into full-blown ODS immediately.

Liberals just want to credit Obama with causing an immediate bump in the economy, which most people will logically associate with Christmas shopping.

After reading a few of the comments from her readers at the end of the article, I have come to the conclusion that they believe there are no rules that apply to them. They actually agreed with her whole cloth. I’m not sure if by her article she was serious, but they were. If there are no rules that they will abide by, then there are no rules that we need to follow with these people.

No wonder their stock is sitting around $5.75 from a recent high of $45.00 per share.

You know, it must be pretty darn easy to get a job at the NYT these days. The paper doesn’t have any real journalistic standards anymore, so really, you could do a stint at the Enquirer for a couple months and hey, you’re in!

Yeah, what’s up with that? “Conscientious people on both sides rationally disagree?” What? Does anybody really think that the founders had to write into the constitution a guarantee that the Federal government would not disarm state militias? What part of the PEOPLE did Will and these other people miss?
The whole idea that the second amendment doesn’t apply to individuals is so laughable, that is the only rational reaction to anybody who suggests it — laugh in their face and ask if they are really that stupid or just think the rest of us are. Laugh at them and ask if they really think the founders were afraid of the federal government taking arms away from police in the individual states.

The distasteful irony here is that this column will not embarrass Collins at all, nor the Times. My guess is that everyone Collins knows personally, and everyone at the NYT who matters are more than happy with this column, because they share Collins’ worldview 100%.
No one in her circle will ever criticize Collins for this column. Quite the opposite….I suspect that she’ll be a thanksgiving hero in Manhattan and the Beltway for “speaking truth to power.”.

I don’t usually read the NY Times, but they did have an interesting article today on the epic failure that is Citibank, and how Clinton Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin was one of the chief moving forces behind the deregulation that allowed Citi to grow into its current “too big to fail” condition, in addition to being one of the moving forces that compelled Citi to take on huge amounts of highly risky debt, like subprime-mortgage backed CDO’s.
After having already sucked up $25 Billion taxpayer dollars in the first bailout, Citi is back at the trough once again, demanding even more billions of taxpayer dollars to keep its bloated carcass afloat.
And what’s Rubin doing now? Is he in prison, where he belongs, or holed up in some cave, fearful of emerging into public view lest he be stoned? Hell no, he’s serving as one of “brilliant” Obama’s top economic advisors.
If it wasn’t so pathetically sad, it would be funny that this idiot woman columnist (not to mention the millions of fools who voted for Obama) actually believe that he’s going to magically solve the economic catastrophe that he and his fellow Dims spent years creating. We’ve got the corrupt and incompetent leading the corrupt and incompetent. It’s going to be a long and painful 4 years.

If she did, and Carter resigned early, the hostages in Iran would have been back before 1981. Khomeini made sure they were out of Iranian air space on Inauguration Day by the time Reagan took the oath of office and became Commander-in-Chief.
If you’ve got kids in American History or Civics classes, ask to see their textbooks and check to see if that fact is noted. I’ll bet it’s not.

L.N. Smithee on November 23, 2008 at 5:49 PM
In fact my guess is that benny thinks that Democrats can lie and cheat and steal with impunity, and that is completely unnecessary for them to live by the same rules the rest of us do.
There for whether the subject is Iraq, or Katrina or ethics or the economy…he simply ignores the impact of failed Democrats and believes the propaganda of the media.
Well, now they have their chance to do for the country what they have done for Detroit and New Orleans and the cities of Gary and D.C. I can’t wait.
Terrye on November 23, 2008 at 5:49 PM
I agree that the column is stupid all around, but fail to see the constitutional defect. For Bush and Cheney to resign would be a really dumb idea, but I’m not aware of any constitutional bar to them doing so. Not all bad ideas are unconstitutional, and not all good ones are constitutional.
Xrlq on November 23, 2008 at 5:56 PM
BHO is not in the Constitutional line of succession, so it doesn’t matter how many people resign, he can’t just jump into the Oval Office until his inauguration date. That’s the Constitutional issue.
By the Consitution, BHO has not even been elected to office, yet.

If Pelosi became temporary President, because she is second in line for the Presidency, would this be a good thing? If she were to be President until Jan. 20, would she not have to give up her Congressional seat? And she could no longer be Speaker? Apparently Collins is willing to sacrifice Pelosi. Can you hold the Speakership, a Congressional seat, and the Presidency at the same time?
Obviously I’m not a Constitutional expert, but I don’t think the Speaker’s job would just revert back to Pelosi after January 20.

Mr_Magoo on November 23, 2008 at 6:43 PM
It would have to be something very strange for that to ever happen. Both the President and Vice-President would have to resign/die at the same time. Otherwise, VP becomes P and then nominates a new VP, who would become the first in line, again.
But, and I’m no Constitutional expert either (not even a lawyer), I think the fact that people are allowed to run for two offices at the same time (as Biden did this cycle) seems to point to the idea that our positions of government are held in such low regard that I don’t doubt a Speaker who refused to give up her seat (and even Speakership, perhaps) could really be run out. It’s not a Constitutional question, and I have no idea if there are any House rules about it – but I tend to doubt it. They always like to leave themselves as much room as possible.
OT, but not too much: Frankly, I think it’s a scandal for any of these leeches to run for a different office than the one they are supposed to be hired to already do – as was true for all of the majors in this election. I respected Dole who resigned his Senate seat to run for President. That was the right thing to do.

First, I’ve been posting here for over 2 1/2 years so I’m not an single agenda interloper nor am I a nutcase as many of those here will tell you.
.
But I must admit that I’m beginning to feel very worried about the prospect of a Constitutional crisis WHETHER OR NOT SCOTUS rules in favor of the lawsuit brought by Leo Donofrio? (YES HIS STANDING HAS BEEN UPHELD & NO, IT’S NOT THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE CASE)
.
I’m writing to ALERT those of you, who LIKE ME, ARE DISTURBED by the MEDIA BLACKOUT EVEN HERE AT HotAir surrounding this scheduled Supreme Court case.
.
10,000,000 LIVE RADIO LISTENERS TUNED IN TO HEAR Mr. Donofrio THE OTHER NIGHT. PLEASE JUST LISTEN to it as you continue posting or whatever. I PROMISE IT WILL BE WORTH YOUR TIME.
.
He NOW HAS FBI PROTECTION due to the very serious threat his original lawsuit poses to NOT ONLY OBAMA’S WHITE HOUSE PLANS BUT TO THOSE IN THE JUSTICE SYSTEM WHO HAVE TRIED TO SABOTAGE HIS CASE.
.
The threats against Leo’s life have escalated Friday, after he filed a secondary suit for JUDICIAL MISCONDUCT by the Appellate Court Judge Sabatino- who took the unprecedented STEP OF OFFERING TO PERSONALLY “HELP” LEO. The judge HUNG HIMSELF IN WRITING when he sent Leo’s paperwork back to him with his money order & the WRONG INSTRUCTIONS on refiling his original suit (against NJ Sec of State for allowing an illegal alien criminal from Nicaragua, Roger Calero to be on the presidential ballot along with the others).
.
Wisely, Leo, REFUSED THE JUDGE’S HELP to ALTER his pleadings. Obviously Leo’s were CORRECT, proven by the fact that he SUCCEEDED & HE’LL BE HEARD BY SCOTUS in 2 days.
.
I’d really be interested in anyone’s thoughts AFTER they actually listen to a couple of parts of his interview posted on the YouTube link above.

Obviously I’m not a Constitutional expert, but I don’t think the Speaker’s job would just revert back to
Pelosi after January 20
Prediction.
If the Dems sacked Pelosi and Reid, the Dow would rise by 1500 points the next day.

I’ve begun reading “Atlas Shrugged” again. Not that I’ve given up or anything.

“Surely this was offered as a comedy piece”
Imagine Peggy Noonan chewing on a pencil while producing cute little essays in the 8th grade, and you get Gail Collins. It’s long been impossible to tell whether she is trying to write tragedy or comedy, because she fails so miserably at both.
The only thing sillier than Collins, however, is Ed Morrissey taking her seriously enough to mount a counter argument on the merits!
