NFL Open Thread, wherein I predict a Steelers victory

Well, that’s an easy prediction to make, since the Steelers beat the Bengals on Thursday night.  That helps get me past the Notre Dame loss to Syracuse yesterday, but it leaves me without a compelling contest to watch.  What’s the biggest game today, if the Steelers have the day off?  I’d put it between the Tennessee Titans-New York Jets and the Philadelphia Eagles-Baltimore Ravens.  I need the Eagles to beat the Ravens to give the Steelers a cushion going into a really tough schedule the next few weeks, but since Jazz Shaw wants the Jets to end the Titans’ win streak and give Don Shula an opportunity to crack his annual bottle of champagne.  I’ll put up the Jets widget in his honor:

My prediction? Titans over the Jets, 21-17, but I’d like to see the Jets beat them. I’m going to pick the Eagles over the Ravens in a low-scoring contest, 13-10. What are your predictions for today?

Ward got me one catch in fantasy!! He went form 11 catches to 1!

I have Washington and TJ starting in fantasy, so I hope the Titan’s D is having an off day.

And Eagles, my team, don’t even get me started. Time to get of Reid!!

bloghooligan on November 23, 2008 at 1:05 PM

Here’s hoping the Falcons clobber the Panthers.

backwoods conservative on November 23, 2008 at 1:05 PM

Carolina @ Atlanta is a big one. Go Panthers!

bloghooligan on November 23, 2008 at 1:05 PM

Amen. Just watched the pregame show with our illustrious Governor Fast Eddie, nice work if you can get it. Fast Ed predicted an Eagles win 17-13, I am not holding my breath.

msmveritas on November 23, 2008 at 1:09 PM

J! E! T! S!

The “old” Titans meet the “new” Titans…Jets break Tenn.’s win streak, score 24-17.

JetBoy on November 23, 2008 at 1:09 PM

You know, Rendell is still the best mayor Philly’s had in…30 years. Not saying much, but I guess it’s something.

bloghooligan on November 23, 2008 at 1:12 PM

Steelers winning on Thursday – Good
Steelers winning on Thursday when it’s televised only on a subscription channel that I don’t have – Not So Good

I’ll have more to say when my heart finally resumes a normal cadence after what my OSU Beavs put me through last night!

innominatus on November 23, 2008 at 1:25 PM

You predicted a McCain/Palin victory.

NeoKong on November 23, 2008 at 1:28 PM

Well, I grew up in Michigan so I’ll go out on a limb and say that the Lions will lose today. Shocka. I know.

The real question is, how bad will the azz-whippin’ be? Will it be as bad as Abilene Christian vs. West Texas A&M yesterday? Time will tell. (That’s a score from a NCAA div II playoff game. My team is Grand Valley State – my alma mater).

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on November 23, 2008 at 1:35 PM

Heh. My college hoops team would be lucky to put up 93 total points in a weeklong tournament!

innominatus on November 23, 2008 at 1:39 PM

Oh yeah, the Steelers and Bungles played some kind of top secret game on Thursday.

Well, even with the Bungles on it twice, the Steelers have the toughest schedule any team has had in years. They’re holding up OK, but that O-line had better pick it up, or they aren’t going too far.

forest on November 23, 2008 at 1:41 PM

I have Titans 23-20. Offense hasn’t done anything yet, but they’re forcing turnovers now.

Giants 34-24 in the other big game.

JammieWearingFool on November 23, 2008 at 1:49 PM

Just logging in to say…

Go Cowboys!

I love Demarcus Ware more than my luggage!

conservative_in_texas on November 23, 2008 at 1:55 PM

Last two times the Redskins made the playoffs, they’ve lost in Seattle. As a DC-area native living in Washington state, this is really annoying. I’ll go with 49-0 Redskins over Seahawks and a happy hump1201 at work tomorrow. The wife (die hard Seattle fan) will be gumpy, but she’ll get over it.

hump1201 on November 23, 2008 at 1:56 PM

I’m just pumped because my OU sooners are now #2 in the coaches poll today.

ousoonerfan15 on November 23, 2008 at 1:57 PM

Where is Ed’s Purple Pride? Go ViQueens!

Booo. I used to like you :-P

;-)

I’m actually hoping for a Jets/Giants Superbowl. Now THAT would be sweet.

JetBoy on November 23, 2008 at 2:06 PM

The game’s blacked out here but I’m predicting Detroit to lose. Even though they’re currently up according to NFL.com, you have to have faith.

For the Canadian Football League Grey Cup, Calgary beats Montreal. I’ve just started to watch more and more games, very fun to watch.

Canadian Infidel on November 23, 2008 at 2:06 PM

For no other reason than being a “homer,” I’ll predict that the Seahawks will get it together and beat the Redskins this afternoon. 21-17. I am on my way out the door to watch the game. Look for me in the Hawks Nest!

Mallard T. Drake on November 23, 2008 at 2:07 PM

The Cardinals can clinch their division with a win today against the Giants (I think). Dogs and cats living together, etc…

JammieWearingFool on November 23, 2008 at 1:49 PM

34 – 24, the Giants scoring the last touchdown on a goal line interception return as time runs out. That’s just how the Cardinals roll.

RightOFLeft on November 23, 2008 at 2:36 PM

Eagles over Ravens would be nice. 13 – 10 seems reasonable.

Zorro on November 23, 2008 at 2:40 PM

Go Panthers!!!!!!!!!!

Jake and Steve–you can do it.

Glad to see the Steelers keeping on–hope they go all the way

Hope Dallas loses here on out!

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on November 23, 2008 at 1:35 PM

Yep. I called it.

Lions score 17 to take a lead and then let the Buc score 28 unanswered. Where’s my bag?

Oh well. There is still hope. I have my adopted Colts to watch tonight.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on November 23, 2008 at 2:59 PM

Lions were doing well, then someone reminded them that they’re the Lions. And they play in Detroit.

rbj on November 23, 2008 at 3:02 PM

A big matchup is New England/Miami; it’s a contest for second place in the AFC East. The loser will probably miss the playoffs.

So far it’s been a terrific game in Miami, score is currently 24-21 Patriots with 6 minutes to go in the 3rd.

Del Dolemonte on November 23, 2008 at 3:14 PM

As I suspected, the Titans aren’t as good as their record indicates. Perhaps the Jets are a better team that I thought earlier & they’re finally coming together behind Favre.

Hoping the Giants continue their dominant play! GO G-MEN!

clancy_wiggum on November 23, 2008 at 3:14 PM

My team’s starters are Matt Forte, Joseph Addai, Tyler Thigpen, Calvin Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald, Hines Ward, Owen Daniels, Philadelphia Defense, and Matt Bryant. Bench players are Kevin Walter, Dominic Rhodes, Ray Rice, and Shaun Hill.

I should have started Walter over Hines! Forte has been a star for me all year and has an easy schedule. Addai has stunk but is heating up and also has an easy sched. Hopefully they will carry me to victory and a meager cash prize!

35 unanswered, more like it :P

clancy_wiggum on November 23, 2008 at 3:14 PM

Yeah, I’m a Titans fan, but reality is setting in. I don’t think the Jets are all that good either, though. Pittsburgh may well be the team that comes out of the AFC this season.

ddrintn on November 23, 2008 at 3:32 PM

New England has rolled up over 500 yards of total offense today against the Fish. And Tom Brady’s replacement Matt Cassell now has his second consecutive 400 yard passing game.

The Pats play the Steelers next week.

Del Dolemonte on November 23, 2008 at 4:13 PM

Thta should be a very telling game

Go Steelers

John The Baptist on November 23, 2008 at 4:27 PM

Look how many posts on this thread already about the Lions. I’m telling you, they’re always more exciting when they’re 0-10.

People start pulling for them to go 0-16. They become special again. Because in the days of NFL parity, it takes a special type of incompetence to go 0-10, now 0-11.

Canadian Infidel on November 23, 2008 at 4:42 PM

Predicting a steelers’ victory? Oh, that’s hard, playing in a division with 6 free wins, a no-brainer!

rightside on November 23, 2008 at 5:05 PM

McNabb should have been benched before opening kickoff, after they showed him on the sidelines letting a big YAWN.

Bring back Norm Snead.

curved space on November 23, 2008 at 6:03 PM

Heh. Low-scoring Eagles over the Ravens? That was a joke.

Go Ravens!!!!!!!

nukemhill on November 23, 2008 at 6:09 PM

Gee, I’ll go out on a limb too. Ed Reed will return an interception for 108 yards and a touchdown.

Wow. That was easy!

nukemhill on November 23, 2008 at 6:10 PM

Now I will go out on a limb. December 11th, the Steelers will get their clocks cleaned by the Ravens in Baltimore.

31-10.

You heard it here first.

nukemhill on November 23, 2008 at 6:25 PM

Ugh. December 14th.

nukemhill on November 23, 2008 at 6:26 PM

The Titans are a much better team than they showed today. The loss for them actually comes at a good time, and takes some pressure off of them. They play the Lions Thursday, so should be back to their winning ways. After that, they have 10 days off to heal and play Cleveland at home, and the Texans in Houston. They should win all three of them. Then they have to deal with Pittsburgh and Indy. If the Titans win 3 of next 5, they should clinch home team in the playoffs, because I doubt the Jets and the Steelers will win out.

ZzzzDad on November 23, 2008 at 6:32 PM

McNabb would be a decent backup in this league…

rightside on November 23, 2008 at 5:05 PM

Well, the Bungles are terrible, and the Browns are underachieving a bit (not quite a free win), but the Steelers don’t need to make any apologies for their schedule. It’s the toughest schedule of any team in the NFL this year. Based on last year’s records, it’s the toughest schedule any team has been assigned in over 20 years.

forest on November 23, 2008 at 7:15 PM

I got my wish. The Falcons clobbered the Panthers 45-28.

backwoods conservative on November 23, 2008 at 7:28 PM

G-men now back up by 11 with under 2 minutes to play.
10 and 1, baby!

rbj on November 23, 2008 at 7:31 PM

We need our “24″ thread!!!

flyboy777 on November 23, 2008 at 8:10 PM

I’ll predict that the Seahawks will get it together and beat the Redskins this afternoon. 21-17.

Mallard T. Drake on November 23, 2008 at 2:07 PM

Pretty damn good……except that I got the teams reversed. Redskins over the Hawks, 20-17. Seahawks are now 2-9. This wasn’t the way Holmgren was supposed to go out. :-(

Mallard T. Drake on November 23, 2008 at 10:03 PM

Go Colts!

El_Terrible on November 23, 2008 at 10:21 PM

Colts beat the Chargers 23-20 in regulation on a last second Adam Vinateri field goal.

Log on November 24, 2008 at 1:08 AM

Any Filthadelphia team win on any day is a bad thing.

rightwingprof on November 24, 2008 at 6:44 AM

I’m not sure what was nicer… Ed putting up the widget for the Jets for me… the Jets absolutely beating the stuffing out of the Titans… or seeing everyone in this thread who predicted the Jets weren’t for real and would lose to the Titans eating crow for their pre-Thanksgiving meal.

Subway Superbowl. You heard it here next.

Thanks, Ed.

Jazz Shaw on November 24, 2008 at 8:31 AM

Sorry Ed, but it appears the team I cheer for the most (next to the Redskins.. when they aren’t playing the Ravens) pretty much crushed the Eagles, 36-7

To all Raven’s fans… COMMENCE VICTORY DANCE AND CELEBRATIONS!!!!
