It begins: Obama aides already sniping at Hillary anonymously; Update: Hillary’s list of demands

We all knew the pick would pay big drama dividends, we just didn’t know it would start paying before she’s even been formally named. Christmas does indeed come early this year.
Doesn’t sound like the sources here are part of The One’s inner circle, but let’s not spoil the unwrapping of our first present with details.
[A] little after lunch on Wednesday two Obama aides went to a local coffee shop to talk. Both were veterans of the campaign, hailed as the best organised and most disciplined in US history, which has made their boss the first black president.
Both had come to believe, in the crucible of the campaign, that Mr Obama’s judgment was superior to their own. But when they met on Wednesday they agreed on one thing: “He’s making a mistake.” As one of the participants told a friend later that night: “She’ll do a good job but she’ll do it for herself, not for Barack. I can’t bear the drama again.”…
The Obama aides who went for coffee on Wednesday discussed how the initial tentative talks between Mr Obama and Mrs Clinton were leaked by the Clinton camp, then how every twist and turn of the financial vetting found its way into the media.
Those in Mrs Clinton’s camp who wanted her to take the job wanted the financial issue off the table believing Mr Obama would find any excuse not to give her the job.
“They can’t help themselves,” the Obama aide told his friend, a fellow Democrat strategist. “Every event is a potential ladder up or a bullet to be dodged. They’re positioning and spinning all the time. They lost. Now we seem to be handing them the farm.”
They’re also under the impression that she’ll be a terrible manager at State. Why? Just because of the endless infighting among her campaign staff that she did little to stop, and the fact that she’s still in debt six months after the primaries ended, and er, her minor strategic error in not preparing a ground game to defeat Obama in the caucus states in case she failed to put him away on Super Tuesday? Oh, and her inexplicable loyalty to tools like Mark Penn and Patti Solis Doyle, who used to spend afternoons watching soap operas instead of managing the campaign? No worries on that last point, if so: She’s already been given the Team Barry seal of approval.
I’m going to stop there before I talk myself out of supporting the pick. Exit question: How seriously should we take the sources’ lament about the Clintons leaking given that they themselves are leaking like a sieve to the Telegraph here?
Update: What Hillary wants, Hillary gets. Except for the presidency, I guess.
Before Hillary Clinton has been formally offered the job as Secretary of State, a purge of Barack Obama’s top foreign policy team has begun.
The advisers who helped trash the former First Lady’s foreign policy credentials on the campaign trail are being brutally shunted aside, as the price of her accepting the job of being the public face of America to the world…
Its turns out that Mrs Clinton’s delay in accepting the president elect’s offer to be his top foreign policy adviser had much to do with her negotiating the terms of the job and insisting on the right to choose her own state department staff and possibly even some of the plumb Ambassador postings. She wanted guarantees of direct access to the president – without having to go through his national security adviser. Above all she did not want to end up like Colin Powell who was completely out-manoeuvred by the hawkish Vice President Dick Cheney who imposed neo-conservative friends like John Bolton on the State Department and steered the US towards a policy of using torture to achieve its aims.
Out: Greg Craig, who savaged Her Majesty in a public memo earlier this year and now lands as White House counsel instead of at State, and possibly Susan Rice, who’s likely to end up in some sort of NSA capacity. Why on earth is Obama so eager to have Hillary in the cabinet that he’s not only willing to risk leaks, backbiting, and drama, but willing to torpedo the ambitions of his closest aides in the process?

It makes me cringe every time I hear people parrot this line. The BHO campaign only looked organized and disciplined because the MSM refused to allow it to look otherwise. Anyone else would have been taken apart by any of the hundreds of idiotic mistakes and gaffes and history that the BHO campaign was able to skate by on.
Exit question: How many other campaigns had their own supporters in the media call them ‘creepy’ in describing the triumphant acceptance speech?

Until I see Obama standing with Hillary and saying she is the next Secretary of State, I am not believing it.
It seems Hillary and Bill are doing some “push polling” of this with the media to either get her the job or make it uncomfortable for Barack to turn her down.
And why all the leaks to British newspapers?

Dont’ kid yourself about Obama’s campaign organization. He intends to continue using his political pods and bots, who were trained in “community organizing” techniques, to support a perpetual campaign. These dedicated minions will pressure politicians from the local to the federal level to embrace Obama’s policies. The message has already gone out to the faithful.
http://www.mcclatchydc.com/politics/story/56233.html
onlineanalyst on November 22, 2008 at 4:49 PM
I think that ongoing campaigning, donating, and working that Obama expects from his volunteers – the “faithful” as you put it – may not result in as much help as he or we might expect.
People can do an AWFUL lot to get somebody elected. Continuing to work for them for free is something else, though.
There is probably a core of dedicated fanatics, but beyond that, I don’t think there will be a whole lot of cooperation. I’ve seen some pretty fanatical Obama devotees already aggravated by the annoying e-mails asking for more money.
Alana on November 22, 2008 at 4:53 PM
I’ll never forget Hillary’s handing out Christmas packages from under her tree last year. (How long did that run for the presidency last anyway?) The perpetual campaigns are a gift that keeps on giving.
onlineanalyst on November 22, 2008 at 4:55 PM
Seriously, I am psyched about this. It’s going to be a real life soap opera every day. The only possible drawback I see is that Iran might decide to bomb Israel while the administration is fighting over who said what at dinner.

That’s what just happened here. This is a matter of life and death to the Clintons. Their constitutional options for a legacy in history have ran out when Hillary lost the nomination. So they’re doing it the dirty way.
What Hillary just did is analogous to the mentally deranged childless mother who rips open the womb of a pregnant woman to steal her not-yet-born baby for her own selfish needs, and doesn’t even care whether the mother lives or dies.
Shame on them.

This reminds me of a story I once read about former SoS George Schultz.
He would call the new foreign service recruits into his office, would point to the globe on the desk, and ask them, “Where is your country?” Inevitably, the recruits would point to the country for which they had been trained – Germany, Morocco, Brazil, etc.
Schultz would respond by spinning the globe over to the USA and pointing, “no, HERE is your country.”
That’s what the State Dept. people still don’t get – they’re not out to be the go-betweens for foreign governments. They’re out there to represent the interests of the USA.

The whole friggin concept of Hillary answering to The One never made sense to me and still does not. I still don’t see it happening. Hillary and Bill are not going to give up and fade away. When Hillary lost to Obama, I was disappointed in a way, because I wanted a Democrat to be the one to take down the first credible black presidential candidate in history.
But now that Hillary is back, I believe it’s extremely likely that the undoing of the first black President of the United States will indeed come at the hands of a Democrat.
The hope and changers, when reality sinks in, are going to march on DNC headquarters with torches lit.

Just a little story,..I rented a car a few weeks ago, no soon had I walked in the door when a man walked up to me and just hugged me. After a little freak-out, I took a deep breath and tried to listen to what he was saying, he was speaking little english, I could make out the best part of what he was saying to me, he thanked me for his families freedom in Iraq. I was trying to tell him I did nothing, it’s our brave soldiers, he then said “Yes,yes, but you, you voted for President Bush” I must have had the look of confusion on my face, he then pointed to my bumper sticker. Bush/Cheney 2004. I felt blessed to speak with someone so grateful for the work our Soldiers are doing.
It was an amazing day, happy tears.

I can’t remember a nastier or more trickier transition in the last 30 or 40 years. 2000 was really a piece of cake compared to this one. I’m at a loss to explain Allah’s double standard. McCain’s staffers spewed lies and Allah was willing to treat it as truth. He WANTED it to be true she showed up at the door in a towel. In this case he attacks the staffers. Why now and not the bitter liberal McCain drones who had no reason to support the real GOP???
All I’m looking for is truth without agenda. Guess HA isn’t one of those sites so long as people like Allah are involved. He hates conservatives and those of faith. Ed is only interested in what the Pope says so he isn’t aligned with most of America either. Why isn’t there a real evangelical Christian on the staff instead of a Papist and an agnostic????

I disagree in this sense. Obama’s people aren’t interested in transition. They are not interested in the past and details about the pre-Messiah era bore them. This isn’t tricky because they think they can simply take over without considering the past. They think that all the media hype about the bastard about to take the Presidency is true to the point that they aren’t worried with continuity. They really think that all those persistent and complex problems like peace in the Middle East are going to be resolved once a socialist commuity activist from Chicago takes over in the U.S.

A little late for the oppo research. If she’d done it well during the primaries, he’d be going back to the Senate now, with a Kerry-like future ahead.
Who knows? Maybe she did get a full birth certificate, his college records, his IL bar application, or his medical records, all of which might have the location of birth. It’s very odd he would not release any of these in full. (Can’t wait until he has his annual check-up at Walter Reed, and his doctor gives the details of his exam. No way he can stop that tradition.)

She’s so shrewd, she’ll be sure to look like a team player, and not give him any reason to fire her. John Bolton commented that you should never hire someone you can’t fire. And after all the Clinton kiss-and-make-up support for Obama in the general, she’d have to do something pretty awful to merit firing. They sucked up their defeat and acted like team players; now Obama has to accept them as such.
The only problem will be if she comes across as more
knowledgable on foreign policy than either Obama or Biden. It’s embaressing, but not grounds for firing.
